But that wonīt help if the IJN actually decides to send massed aircraft, not even the 350 carrier based Wildcats helped at all when the IJN is able to launch ridicoulosly sized 500 ac strikes that are only engaged by 1/3 of my Cap at best... not even Hellcats would have made a difference I guess... the good news is that my invasion wasnīt spotted earlier, so this must be a surprise to the enemy... the invasion itselve consists of 200 ships in two TFs that try to unload two Marine divisions and two base forces with supplies as fast as possible to get the ships out of that place asap... Gasmata is held by only a handful of Japanese troops, I doubt that two Marine divs will have any problem taking the place, this will then give us a base close enough to Rabaul to employ short ranged fighters... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Amphibious Assault at Gasmata TF 142 troops unloading over beach at Gasmata, 103,127 Allied ground losses: 87 casualties reported Squads: 2 destroyed, 31 disabled Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 24 disabled Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled Guns lost 20 (0 destroyed, 20 disabled) Vehicles lost 2 (0 destroyed, 2 disabled) 13 troops of a USMC Rifle Squad 43 lost overboard during unload of 104th USN Base Force 13 troops of a USMC Rifle Squad 43 lost overboard during unload of 104th USN Base Force 13 troops of a USMC Rifle Squad lost in surf during unload of 3rd Marine Div /11 10 Support troops lost in surf during unload of 3rd Marine Div /41 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pre-Invasion action off Gasmata 52 Coastal gun shots fired in defense. Estimated time to target is 4 minutes Japanese aircraft Ki-44-IIa Tojo x 27 No Japanese losses Aircraft Attacking: 27 x Ki-44-IIa Tojo sweeping at 36740 feet trying to pick off leaking Cap but no fighters in the air... the airwar in this PBEM has turned out the same for both sides, nobody is able to coordinate more than one squadron on a sweep (if youīre lucky, you get the full squadron as a whole over the target) and therefore both sides are trying to pick off leaking Cap at max alt to dive on the enemy and take them out while you have numerical superiority and the height advantage... direct attacks on a heavily capped target is a nogo for both sides because even if you come in higher than the enemy and got a couple of times more fighters, the bits and pieces strikes you send in would be in trouble when facing lots of fighters in the air... so having twice the number of fighters set to sweep wonīt help you when the enemy can get all of his fighters into the air at once, but you canīt sent yours in together... funny as it is, because that usually means you arenīt able to launch your fighters alltogether from a level 9 airfield, but the one on the receiving end is able to launch two, three, four or five times the number of fighters at once to be on Cap from a much smaller airfield than youīve got... what a logic... oh, sorry, there is no logic... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Saidor , at 99,124 Weather in hex: Clear sky Raid spotted at 26 NM, estimated altitude 40,740 feet. Group patrol altitude is 12000 Raid is overhead thatīs todayīs highlight and I really was amazed to see this convoy going to Hollandia (level 3 airfield) but the base only had a meager Rufe Cap that wouldnīt be able to stop a small bomber strike, let alone 50 Mitchells coming in together... "coordinating" bombers seems to be far easier than coordinating fighters because Iīm not able to have two Lightning squadrons fly together from the same base... weather wasnīt good but coming in low attacking slow merchants meant a massacre within the ships... no troops on the ships so I guess thatīs a failed resupply mission... the ships werenīt caught unloading so it seems they were attacked before they actually could start unloading... excellent... and yeah, there were no escorts... why? because my fighters escorted the heavy bombers to another target... which means fighters from the same base the Mitchells were coming from escorted heavy bombers from a different base four hexes away to a target at a total different direction... didnīt matter in that case but with 50 Tojos on Cap, it could have also turned out as a disaster with a monthly Mitchell replacement lost... and no, I wonīt set my fighters to 1000ft escort because with the screwed up airroutine, they would probably end up sweeping alone at 1000ft and that would mean they would be eaten alive by an enemy Cap at 20-38000ft... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Rabaul , at 106,125 Weather in hex: Thunderstorms Raid spotted at 38 NM, estimated altitude 15,000 feet. Or perhaps it was just because the ships that had the fragment aboard that actually is named as the parent unit had unloaded completely... donīt know... anyway, Iīm glad weīre going to have the parent units on the beach, downside once again is that the supply being unloaded is totally insufficient... while one of the base forces receicved thousands of supplies, the two divs only received a handful of supplies to fight for a couple of days at best (at reduced efficiency of course)... had 40 ships loaded with supplies only, but that didnīt help at all... Gasmata will fall for sure in the next couple of days and weīre going to use our LCTs to bring in some more supplies...
