0 plane(s) not yet engaged, 4 being recalled, 0 out of immediate contact.
Group patrol altitude is 22000
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 5 minutes

as we took Gasmata yesterday, the standard support troops of my amphib invasions (one USN base force, one USAAF base force) already got the airfield running and we moved in lots of Spitfires, setting them to sweep the dot base three hexes West of Rabaul to draw out the Tojos...

first sweep meets an ideal number of enemy fighters...

Group patrol altitude is 36740
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 1 minutes

same is true for the second sweep, the Spits again prove to be undergunned with their MG/cannon armament as they only damaged the enemy fighters... same as in WITP also in AE the cal.50 sixpack seems to be far superior to a mixed armament with cannons...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Talasea , at 103,125

Group patrol altitude is 22000

sweep after sweep of course, the more squadrons you´ve got, the more single sweeps you send... working as designed... that´s of course an even bigger problem with the smaller sized British and Australian squadrons, the US squadrons got at least 25 aircraft each... today it´s not that much of a problem because every piece meal sweep is only met by a handful of fighters... also in this case, we dive on the enemy (flying 260ft higher than the enemy is enough to do that) and take out enough Tojos to get away unharmed...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x Spitfire Vc Trop sweeping at 37000 feet

and more single squadron sweeps... and no, not even the squadron themself are coming in as a whole... pff... well done...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on Talasea , at 103,125

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid spotted at 15 NM, estimated altitude 41,000 feet.

Group patrol altitude is 36740

and to complete the stupidity of "coordination", here is the rest of all four squadrons flying together... and it hurts again and again and again, this just isn´t acceptable... it´s not a bug, it´s a feature...

at the end of the day we claim more than a dozen Tojos...

Aircraft Attacking:

all Tojos and Oscars that are coming in are flying below 36800ft, which means I could have put up Cap to engage the enemy, using Spits (37000ft) and Corsairs (36800ft) to bounce all incoming strikes... air combat is so easy in AE, just try to get above your enemy, the 50ft advantage of the Corsair over the Oscar II should be enough... with none of my fighters in the air, I doubt that we´re going to see many more enemy sweeps... missed a chance here...

we got some Beaufighters escorting the bombers from a different base again... I don´t want them to do that... would be cool if my fighters would only escort bombers to a target if you set the escorts to fly to that target... if not, they are tasked to escort naval strikes as that´s something you can´t specify a target anyway...

first bombardment under the new patch with the new bombardment routines... no damage, no counterfire... what once again concerns me is the fact that none of the four dozen patrols/bombers have spotted anything... spotted nothing coming in, spotted nothing going out the day after... all aircraft got their search archs focussed 100% on where the enemy was coming in and where he was heading out... that just doesn´t work for me...

moved halve of our Army in Burma to Chiang Mai but I´m not that confident to achieve anything here after seeing what actually is defending this hex... and the rest of my Army at Pegu is blocked by 20 enemy units across the river, followed by another 20 enemy units at Moulmein... wonder where all those units are coming from, with another halve dozen divs sitting in Northern Australia, where does the Japanese get these units from?

SS RO-67 is sighted by LCT-129
SS RO-67 attacking LCT-129 on the surface

another LCT is sunk by an enemy short range sub... this LCT convoy consisted of two dozen LCTs, would a sub attack such a TF on the surface or would that be too dangerous? Been a close range engagement, with all the 20mm guns on the LCTs, I guess noone would man the sub´s deck gun but if he does, he would be killed in short order... losing those LCTs actually is a pain as they´re really useful, each can carry 150 supplies...

with all the tanks we´ve got here, one could think the Japanese would be overrun in clear terrain, but I´m unsure how the planned attack will go... probably pretty bad for us...

so much about that 100% prepped Army... with all the tanks being involved here, I expected to at least do some more damage... the enemy´s adjusted av is a nice example of what I´m saying all the time about the defense of Burma, you can´t defend it in the clear hexes but as soon as you get into jungle hexes the enemy is stuck... and 40! units are blocking me South of Pegu... 40...

I´ve been quite surprised by the massing of enemy heavy cruisers in this area but the new bombardment routine keeps us from suffering a nuke it seems... I haven´t tried a nav bombardment under the new patch yet, I would like Rainer trying to figure out how it works now... we achieve a 155mm belt hit on Myoko and that´s it... our base suffers no notable damage... I´m only pissed off by my non working nav search though... it doesn´t spot anything anytime, all it does is creating 60 op losses a month... grmpf...

enemy fighters being reported at Chiang Mai and we send the twin tailed devils to meet 14 Tonies in the air... the enemy being dived on had no chance, losing halve a dozen fighters outright during the dive phase... the dive ended for a short period when the Tonies took out a Lightning for no loss... thinking about that makes me laugh when I just read again today that the dive isn´t that much of a factor... lol... it´s either ignorance or plain inability to watch the replay it seems...

the terrain makes it impossible to break through here, even though the enemy is not prepped, got inexperienced units and we should have by far more firepower... while the first deliberate attack was a failure already, the losses from that one are devastating... one more attack and I would have shred this whole Army in a week... ordered the troops to retreat...well done... no idea how I should break through the enemy defensive line in the jungle/jungle rough hexes in the area between Moulmein - Chiang Mai... facing 50+ enemy units with an estimated 5000av with our Army of 7000av and lots of tanks...

Any idea what kind of nav searchs rating you have for your pbys and hudsons? My patrol sqdns. are all around 60-80s in an ai game I have in 4/43. They seem to get the job done. Just using the usual settings . . . 50/30/20, search/train/rest and 1 sector/plane assigned. Who knows? Your sub campaign turned around, maybe your pbys will too.

all my search ac are at 70 search, 30% rest. I´ve tried it some time with 50/50 and guess what was the result? Losses went down, yes, but only in the same ratio as the number of search ac went down. I can´t recreate what other people are reporting, nav search is the number one kamikaze mission for the Allied. I´m sure I lose 1,5-2 ac per day. Using PBYs and HudsonI and III. 6000ft, normal range max. Experience of the pilots is high, considering how experience in general looks like in AE. But usually I get "PBY crashes on landing"...

Pilots aren´t overly fatigued (flying two days Cap with 30% results in far more fat for example) and if the planes get fat, they are taken out of active flight duty and are maintained anyway. I don´t know what´s going on in my game, but I know for sure that the losses are higher than they should be.

Allied Task Force Manages to Escape
Task forces break off...

first off, a very nice attack by the enemy... there are a couple of things I want to comment on though. I call myself stupid for sending in a nearly 100 ship convoy without having it covered by a strong surface combat force, I thought about it but decided not to do so because I would have called me stupid also if I would send in BBs covering this convoy while putting 200 fighters on Cap over Gasmata and the KB pops up together with some 100 land based aircraft that just fly through my Cap like KB´s air arm did in our carrier engagement to sink our BBs and halve of this convoy. Not KB or land based aircraft showed up (I had a strong Cap over Gasmata btw) but again a huge surface combat TF steamed in and out (heck, those were the slow Nagatos) without being spotted and that´s once again what pisses me off. The AAR is behind the game at the moment and there was some discussion on the forum about search archs working or not after this actually happened in my PBEM. I clearly said they don´t work and I say that again. Just like a dozen times at Akyab when huge enemy TFs steamed in and out without being spotted by dozens of patrol aircraft focussed exactly into the area where the enemy was going in and out, we never spotted them. Now here in the area around the Bismarck Sea, I´ve massed around 40% of the available USN patrol aircraft and backed them up with radar equipped bombers, all with decent crews and focussed into this area. Nada, we don´t spot the TF going into position, we don´t spot them going out again... wonder if the enemy TF would have escaped such a search force in real life after attacking a target. I once again went totally mad about how things in the game turn out and now it was too much, I started fiddling around in my AI game with the search archs. Result was clear to me, search works by a couple of times better without archs than with them, while it should be absolutely the other way around. So after having search archs for 14 months of the war (I liked the feature for some time) I have now reset all search archs on the map and now what do you think happened in the following turns? Yeah, I started spotting shipping North and East of Rabaul like wild. I didn´t change the numbers of aircraft, I didn´t change any settings, yet out of a sudden, my sightings of enemy shipping sky rocketed. Single or two ship TFs over halve a dozen hexes East of Rabaul are now spotted daily (heading into the Solomons) while I never spotted any of those TFs in the past having focussed my search ac with search archs into that area. Is that happening by accident out of a sudden or what? No, for sure not. My conclusion is simple, search archs don´t work the way they should. Due to the high number of patrol ac around the Bismarck Sea I now spot more or less everything that is in that area while I never spotted anything with archs before. Never spotted anything is of course an exegaration, I did spot some subs now and then, sometimes also a TF when it was at a base. Now I get halve a dozen sightings each day.

Btw, including escorts or light cruisers in such a TF doesn´t help at all, not a single hit was achieved by our light cruisers, they were just targets for the enemy TF... corresponds with the reports of CV TFs being shot to pieces even though they got quite some surface forces as escorts... wonder how Taffy 3 would turn out in the game, I guess the destroyer escorts would be able to do nothing to an attacker and the CVEs would be shred...

Learnt something new for my next PBEM (if there will ever be one) but that wasn´t the only thing that totally pissed me off today... more to follow right below...

I´m really sick of those glitches in the game... ship movement in AE seems to be just borked... first, there was this fast transport bug that has made me lost more or less all of my APDs the one time I tried to use them (also made my opponent lose lots of ships already), then there was my damaged carrier that just was frozen in place for a couple of turns without moving a single hex. Now today, we have a convoy being destroyed because we first get the message that the convoy is able to escape (after being hit hard) and we get back to the map getting the message (TF retreating towards Milne Bay - home port), noticing immedietely that the TF didn´t move out on the map... what followed was this second engagement... I really love it, but it gets even better...

Task forces break off...

after the second engagement I again got the message "TF retreats towards Milne Bay" and again I immedietely noticed that the TF was frozen at Milne Bay and did NOT move out... result of course are more ships sunk... the only reason that I don´t lose all 100 ships is the fact that the enemy ran out of ammo, our ships were already attacked with AA guns the longer the one sided fight lasted... I guess at some point there was just no ammo left...

and you know what, the convoy was stuck at Gasmata for another three turns, I could not move it out! I created new TFs, didn´t help... I transferred ships around, didn´t help... it always showed moving to Milne Bay, but it just didn´t... thinking about all the times my ground movement was borked already because the follow unit works as bad as in WITP (most often the lead unit moves but the rest just reverts to defend 0 miles for me) I now also complain about the ship movement being borked it seems... at least that seemed to work in WITP... this glitch costs us at least one and a halve dozen ships more than it would if the TF wouldn´t have frozen in place... the only positive was that the convoy was able to completely unload all troops and some 60000 supplies at Gasmata before the enemy battlewaggons showed up... probably a dozen ships didn´t unload completely, therefore the convoy was caught in the end... with my now better working air search all around the map I expect not to be caught by surprise in 90% of the times... note that my ship based search ac never have been set to use archs and they usually spot the enemy like wild too...

the enemy moved fighters to Rabaul again and kept them there after we spotted them, so we´ve sent in everything that was available today... one out of the three available P-38 squadrons begins, not possible to send them in together... as usual so to say...

39000ft dive orgy, I guess we had the dive for 80% of the fight´s duration, the Tojos really took a beating but we suffered quite some damaged Ligthnings and lose a total of 4 in the end...

the Lightnings had reduced the enemy Cap by 50% already when the Corsairs from Gasmata show up for the first time to meet more than just a couple of enemies... being ablo to fly 60ft higher than the Tojos enables the Corsair to get the dive on the enemy... anything new that I´m reporting here? Yeah, the dive isn´t important... the result here was taking out over a dozen Tojos during the dive while not losing (or suffering damage) a single Corsair... the dive ended in the end that lead to some more Tojos shot down or being damaged, with also a couple of Corsairs suffering damage but we only had one written off in the end with no pilots lost...

four Spitfire squadrons at Gasmata, all of them fly together to engage the enemy over Rabaul... as there were only 3 Tojos left it was a wasted effort but interesting nevertheless... I must have hit the jackpot probability in this attack as it is the 1 out of 10000 die roll that enabled four squadrons from the same base to fly a sweep together... haven´t changed anything in the settings of course nor was there any condition different than usual...

here comes the second Lightning squadron, what worked for the Spits today, didn´t work for the Lightnings... and the third Lightning squadron completely stayed at home, another example of having WWII squadrons deciding to fly missions or not on their own... same base as the other two squadrons, no fat, perfect morale... doesn´t matter in the end anymore, just pointing out what happens...

it gets even better though... that was all happening in the morning, the Lightnings were coming from PM, level 9 airfield, nice weather and everything else in perfect condition, I would call PM the best airbase on the map... and it´s also the base where over a hundred 4E bombers should have flown an airfield attack in the morning... but the morning is over...

now here comes the afternoon... that is not an ordered sweep, here you can see Beaufighters from Buna trying to escort the bombers from PM... something I don´t like anyway and they failed to do so, so they went in to sweep Rabaul... obviously my bombers attack in the afternoon, there was no reason not to attack in the morning... while the enemy´s Cap was whiped out in the morning, there are two dozen of Tojos in the air in the afternoon of course... hey, that´s great...

hey! That´s the main part of the missing Lightning squadron that didn´t sweep in the morning... it´s a good idea to have it sweep now in the afternoon AFTER the bombers though when there´s nothing left in the air... I really miss at least basic possibilities to give orders how attacks should happen ala BOB... no need to implement everything from BOB as this would just go too far but giving orders to attack in the morning or in the afternoon, with escorts or turning back before the target if there are no escorts, etc would be nice because the way the game handles attacks is just rubbish. With the attempt to make it better than WITP it´s now nothing more than a complete screw up of daily operations, no matter what you do... the fact that squadrons do what they want in terms of flying or not was there in WITP too... pilots in WWII weren´t asked to fly, they were ordered and if there was the order to fly then that´s what they did... something that seems to be missed in programming the game... and it wasn´t the case that all attacks got screwed up, in the game, you get things screwed up in 90%+ of the time...

I´m not complaining about losses here, heck, I came away without suffering real losses anyway, if the Beaufighters wouldn´t have decided it would be good to escort the bombers, I would have suffered more or less no losses at all... I´m complaining about how things are turning out... if there´s no reason for the bombers not to fly in the morning with the fighters, then they god damn should fly... war wasn´t a "are you willing to fly thing"... there should be either the possibility to give more precise orders, going into the direction of BOB, or the game should be able to handle things better, as it is now, it´s just a daily series of things being totally screwed up that in no way is realistic... as it is now, it seems in real life there were no briefings, it was just "pick a card and then let your pilots decide if they want to fly today or not"... if you play BOB bombing the Reich and you would do your attacks in a WITP AE style, then you would be told that you completely miss how it should be done and that you really perform poorly... the enemy would just shred you to pieces if you do attacks like this...

with the loss of all those ships from the Gasmata convoy, a disastrous turn of course...

oops... there´s another one...

sweep ten...

and yet at the same moment I´m typing this, there´s the usual discussion going on on the main forum about high altitude and piece meal sweeps... just funny how ignorant people can be or perhaps they´re so stubbornly believing their own myths... ten sweeps today, Rabaul is a level 6 airfield, the base could throw up 250+ fighters on Cap at once... my level 9 airfield (PM) and my level 5 airfield (Gasmata) can´t even launch a single fighter squadron at once to fly to the target... yeah, thanks to the explanations I´m sure believing that that is realism pure... NOT...

force people to fight at realistic altitudes (otherwise the feature with the alt bands is useless) and get "coordination" somewhat realistic... having it fail in 95%+ of the time surely isn´t realistic IMO...

considering to have 100% preparation and a clear hex together with more or less all available US tank units I hoped for a somewhat better result... oh well, a single attack wrecked several of my units completely, some smaller units are down to 50% strenght... no, not disabled, they LOST 50%... 4 enemy divs and two "tank" regiments are enough to easily defeat the whole Australian Army together with all US tank units I could get and a hell a lot of artillery units... once again we did not get any positive multiplier which I find quite off... why not? 100% prepped, HQs, the best leaders I could get... the Allied units still are only a shadow compared to the Japanese units, if you don´t outnumber them at least 2:1 you are dead meat, the enemy doesn´t care at all if you come along with hundreds of tanks, the Japanese got modern AT guns and banzai swords after all... it´s obvious that I can´t break through any of the Japanese stacks, no chance against the 40 (fourty) Japanese units around Moulmein, no chance at Chiang Mai with 3500av vs 2000, no chance here at Katherine...

as well as the third P-38 squadron... all coming from the same base of course... nice how it works and there´s still none enlightening me what woodoo he employs to have sweeps going in coordinated... as I haven´t seen any evidence in form of combat reports but only those few guys telling myths about it, I seriously doubt they are able to do it, but hey, just stick to your oppinion...

we lose 5 bombers on a combat mission and also 5 nav search aircraft today... funny...

Most complaints in AE coordination and results are in heavy weather when historically they wouldnt even fly ...

Regarding Katherine i dont think histroically it was even feasilble to get such a large army there or to build level 6 forts... population probably 2000 a fortirified village or trench network LOL , IRL you can jsut bypass the whole town  . Also how come your entire Australian army AV is so low  , in PzB game the Australians have 4000AV at Rockhampton the Australian army at home were mainly militia , with improvised AVF and not very good overall.  The other issue i see is the repeated high non combat losses , normally infantry were in the meat grinder not the support units. .

With some tanks you could do that in AE, almost instantly.

And incidentally I find the IJA to be the most unbalanced part of AE. It is Gods Force in this game. In reality US troops thrashed the **** out of them whenever they met them.

problem is, there´s no difference in fighter sweep coordination in perfect "clear" weather either. Fighter sweeps in my game always look the same, independent of weather. There is a difference in bomber strikes and weather though.

I´ll have to admit, while the Japanese couldn´t bring such an Army to build such a fortification system at Katherine, the Allied wouldn´t have been able to march my Army overland to Katherine either and have them fully supplied.

I haven´t moved out any restricted Aussie divs so the ones I had in Australia are at Katherine now. Only some smaller units are holding places like Perth for example. The rest of Australia is in US hands, while I don´t fear an attack on the rest of Australia anyway as that would be just suicide at that date. All my Aussie units have upgraded to Aus combat squads, got heavy weapons and the tanks are either Grants or Matildas. Considering the firepower I have at Katherine I would have hoped to at least take the base over a couple of attacks with the enemy retreating North before the base would fall, but with the ground combat as it is, it´s mostly just about assault value. Just look at all the tanks I´ve got there and that´s clear terrain. Add in the fact that I´m unable to reduce the forts and the couple of Japanese units here could wreck all Allied divs on the map if I would send them there one after another to reinforce my Army. I´ve already given the order to retreat, will try to do some flanking but you always need 3 times more av than the Japanese to hope to stand your own, so a flanking maneuver could quickly end in a disaster as I just don´t have enough troops to flank in strenght (av wise) and keep up the siege. The inf divs for the siege and the tanks to flank and surround the enemy would be perfectly in real life I guess. Hey ho, halve a dozen divs in Australia, some divs already destroyed on New Guinea, 2000 av at Chiang Mai and 40 units around Moulmein. Now tell me where all those Japanese units are coming from. There´s definetely no shortage of major IJA units it seems.

The thing with having support destroyed has been there ever since WITP, I never understood it either. Just like having your support squads in the frontline to take most of the losses.

flanking Katherine is no problem at all with my tanks, but holding the hex North of it if you flank them because everything is about av and one IJA div meeting my tank units surely ends in an IJA shock attack that wrecks my tank units when they have to retreat due to a 2:1 adjusted av at least. And you now have to hold all hexes around the enemy, so I would need probably 2000 av divided through the hexes around the base with another 2000 to keep up the siege. Available are not even 2500 anymore though. I will nevertheless try it, but hopes are small, only a big mistake of Rainer could bring us further but so far Rainer only made one mistake in ground war, that was trying to hold Burma in the open hexes around Mandalay. Now he focussed in the jungle/jungle rough hexes around the line Moulmein - Chiang Mai and I´m stuck forever probably. Got 7000 av fully supplied but can´t see a chance to break through. A flanking maneuver by amphib assault seems the only chance but I don´t have the Navy to do that. Bringing the USN to Rangoon is something I don´t want to.

You do?

Does hex side control not impact supply then? for sure?

don´t you? doesn´t a hex become neutral again if you leave it with your troops? It didn´t in WITP with the ZOCs but that was one of the things they said would be changed in AE because a construction btn with 5 av could no longer surround a 5000av army anymore by tracing ZOCs around it.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Shortlands at 109,131

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 42 NM, estimated altitude 5,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 14 minutes

Allied aircraft
PB4Y-1 Liberator x 10

Allied aircraft losses
PB4Y-1 Liberator: 6 damaged

Japanese Ships
CA Maya
CL Abukuma

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x PB4Y-1 Liberator bombing from 2000 feet
Naval Attack: 10 x 500 lb SAP Bomb

first time we launch our Navy Liberators against naval targets... at the moment we´ve only got one squadron available on the map (upgrade of a Catalina squadron)... the pilots were around 70 lownav skill but all missed their target... amazingly and to my surprise, the Liberators flew with their full bomb load, I expected them to have only their reduced load on lownav... this bomber is rated as a level bomber therefor it surprised me to see them fly with full load... in a couple of weeks I will get two more squadrons that can be upgraded to Liberators, bringing my USN lownav attack force to 36 bombers...

this attack was a complete failure but I have high hopes in the Navy Liberators when I see what the US Army Mitchells can achieve in lownav attacks... the bombers were coming from Port Moresby, the fact that there are cruisers at Shortlands during the day surprised me too... Rainer said it was again a screwed up fast TF, while I thought that was fixed... perhaps it was an attempt to sneak in some cruisers to attack me and he didn´t want to tell me...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning Air attack on TF, near Shortlands at 109,131

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 25 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.

Allied aircraft
Beaufort VIII x 12
F4U-1 Corsair x 16

Allied aircraft losses
Beaufort VIII: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
CA Maya, Torpedo hits 1
CL Abukuma, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x Beaufort VIII launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 22in Mk 13 Torpedo
6 x Beaufort VIII launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 22in Mk 13 Torpedo

while the Liberators all missed, the Aussie Beauforts attacking with torps (coming from Gasmata) achieved two hits each... there are 36 Beauforts based at Gasmata, the airfield isn´t overstacked, but two 99 morale squadrons also ordered on navattack just decided to stay grounded... yeah, another time I have to raise the issue about obeying orders or not in WWII... there was absolutely no reason for these two squadrons not to launch and in real life, they would have launched everything able to fly when the enemy parks some cruisers just 200 miles off your base...

Corsairs failing to link up with the bombers... that´s the best that can happen if you want to have a sweep going in before your bombers... if you order a sweep, you can never be sure if a) it launches at all and b) if it goes in before the bombers... if the escorts fail to link up with your bombers, they are always going in before the bombers it seems... I deliberetely have them at max alt of course...

Naval Attack: 1 x 22in Mk 13 Torpedo
4 x Beaufort VIII launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 22in Mk 13 Torpedo

but here´s another Beaufort squadron coming from Gasmata, again, as stupid as it can be, the other two 99 morale squadrons decided not to launch today... really funny and perfectly realistic... you could argue about not launching all in the morning if the cruisers would be identified as small freighters (then the bombers probably wouldn´t attack with torps either) but when you definetely attacked cruisers in the morning and spot them again in the afternoon, tell me which commander would not launch all of his available aircraft to attack them? zzz...

the one squadron that attacked both times today did a great job, torp skill around 70 pays off... one torp into Abukuma and three into CA Maya, with a total of 23 bombers attacking is an excellent job... not sure about Abukuma but I guess heavy cruiser Maya should be finished after taking three torps... if still afloat, I doubt she will make Truk... and Rabaul is a nogo for enemy shipping as everything going there would be sunk...

only one Beaufort was lost attacking the enemy cruisers, we also lose two bombers today... we also lose four aircraft on nav search... lol...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

thought our top pilots could be interesting. 14 months into the war, we got 4 double aces, most of our top pilots are flying one of the three different Lightning types on the map (about 100 in total). E and F Lightning models are flying in Burma (not even 40 left in total), the G model is flying out of bases on New Guinea. The Canadian Hurricane pilot achieved all his kills over Adak against Vals and Zeroes long ago and the two Aussie Beaufighter pilots both fought in the New Guinea area, mostly achieving their kills over Merauke during our invasion...

Those E Class escorts combine speed and maneuverability and are quite small, that explains why your subs miss them.

don´t you? doesn´t a hex become neutral again if you leave it with your troops? It didn´t in WITP with the ZOCs but that was one of the things they said would be changed in AE because a construction btn with 5 av could no longer surround a 5000av army anymore by tracing ZOCs around it.

Can't you run a tank unit around behind the enemy onto the trail, and then send it into the main hex?

That way you control the inner hexsides along both sides of the trail.

As I understand it. I suppose given time you could zip back and forth on every hexside until all six are yours.

Other thing is - isn't Katherine open terrain from memory? You can bomb the $hit out of them with bombers, it's possible to destroy an entire brigade in a week or so with max effort Allied bombing. After a month of being pulverised he might have had enough. An armoured unit that was roaming aruond in the open in India in my game was literally destroyed in a week of bombing by about 35 heavy bombers. 120 AV to removed from map in 7 days. Impressive.

Aaand. As Katherine is a base hex you could nuke the airfield to crap and hope to score supply hits on him.

I suppose you know all this already though. :P

correct, can´t see a reason to do it as my replacement pilots train just fine on map within a couple of months to 70 whatever skill I want. And I still get hundreds of pilots moved up in training every now and then, at least I get messages about it. Perhaps I´ve got to check if there are any pilots in tracom, if so, no idea how they got there though

the funny thing about that is that during the months of me doing my sub statistic I had a MK14 hit rate of 94% and that included those E and DD for example. That´s why I´ve always said that as soon as my torps start to work, the Japanese would run out of escorts in no time. Now that my torps semi work, they miss the DDs and E. The only explanation I had so far is the increase of ASW performance of IJN escorts in 1/43 but I don´t know how that really effects their ability to avoid my torps. The decrease in hits was quite substantial in 43.

am going to use some tank units to encircle the enemy but I´m unsure if they really change the hexside control when they leave the hex again. Thought the enemy would be able to move out immediately when my units leave the hex. Katherine is too far away to really bomb the crap out of it and with level 6 forts, we wouldn´t do much damage to LCUs. Placing a couple of dozen Tojos there would keep me from attacking with unescorted bombers anyway. I could already afford the losses but I don´t like it doing that way. I could only use Alice Springs as staging base for my heavies, not sure about the distance at the moment but I guess it´s about 15 or 16 hexes. AFAIK Katherine has at least a road connection to Darwin so reaction of IJA units should be quite quickly.

Looks like it's going to be quite the task then. He's got 5 plus division equivalents at a base which is well supplied, difficult for you to interdict in any way, and is heavily entrenched. Meanwhile you have a long and tenuous supply line and are mostly out of range of air support by the sound of it. And you have something of a qualitative advantage but not a quantitative advantage.

Seems unless encirclement works it might be time to go somewhere else. Preferably while trying to fix his forces in place so those 5 divisions don't just parry the next thrust.

I'm pretty sure encirclement does work though as I've been on the receiving end of it loads of times. You can overrun enemy positions with armour, far as I know, and pin him in one spot. Sounds like he could end up doing it to you quite easily though.

we continue to fire duds or misses on those E ships... funny, you think 1/43 would make your subs killers, just to notice that they now miss most often when targetting escorts, while the subs had a 94% HIT rate (see my statistics) during 42, but then they had 80% dud torps... in nearly 3 months, not one E class escort was sunk, while we probably had three dozen attacks... even in 42 with dud torps this would have resulted in 5-7 of those ships sunk... is this all happening by accident or what? Dud rate goes down to 50% and at the same time the hit rate is pummeled?
