1st May, another important date. The SBD-5 Dauntless (in big numbers) and the Helldiver (in smaller numbers) are available from now on. The Helldiver will be my preferred bomber for my carrier based bomber squadrons but it will take forever to equip them with this fine aircraft. The SBD-5 is no improvement at all over the SBD-3 so I wonder why I should upgrade the squadrons (other than to have more replacements), in fact, from the stats the SBD-5 is even worse than the 3. The Helldiver is the ultimate bomber though, it carries radar and gets two additional 250lb bombs to itīs 1000lb bomb. A month since the appearance of the Hellcat has passed and three VF squadrons are now flying this fighter, the rest of the available carriersī VF squadrons will be upgraded this month. Within the next six weeks, every carrier based fighter squadron will be upgraded to Hellcats (also the VR squadrons which I use for Cap only and not for replacement use, this gives me additional CVE with 28 fighters each, the bomber squadrons were sent ashore for training) AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR May 01, 43 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sub attack near Aogashima at 112,66 Japanese Ships xAK Florida Maru E W-25 xAK Glasgow Maru xAK Aden Maru E Sureko E Uruko Allied Ships SS Sturgeon, hits 2 SS Sturgeon launches 4 torpedoes at xAK Florida Maru E Sureko fails to find sub and abandons search E Uruko fails to find sub, continues to search... DD Dunlap firing on surfaced sub .... Sub slips beneath the waves you should keep one thing in mind when using your DDs for ASW duty: EXPERIENCE... Iīve complained about my US DDs being more or less useless when attacking enemy subs while my British DDs were killers... the reason for this was more than obvious though, the overall higher exp of British DDs and me using lots of different US DDs in ASW TFs all the time... so Iīve focussed on using the same DDs in ASW TFs over a longer period (like the above one) and especially Meade and Dunlap increased their experience (eg. Meade by 8 points, night and day exp together). And it seems that there is a magic line in the code that makes ASW deadly while itīs useless before. A couple of points in exp seems to make a huge difference, this can also be seen in the huge step forward of IJN ASW on 1/1/43 when the ASW exp increases from 67% to 80% ASW exp (total exp as basis)... the sub fired three! torp salvoes during the gun battle... all of them missed luckily... seems rather odd but so far a sub never has hit something in such a case in this PBEM... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Toungoo , at 57,50 Weather in hex: Light cloud Raid spotted at 47 NM, estimated altitude 38,740 feet. Iīve got 150 heavy flak guns at the base (1 is disabled) and we claim the whopping number of two enemy bomber shot down by flak... Iīve said it before on the main forum, I can say it for a repeated time here in my AAR again, flak isnīt modelled correctly... and I sure stand by what Iīve said... itīs totally unrealistic to have that amount of flak guns at such a base in Burma but who cares, the gameīs routine for flak is even more unrealistic because not even that many guns do what 25% of them could do - force the enemy to a higher alt or cause serious losses... Iīve pointed out on the main forum that Berlin had some 400-500 heavy flak guns at itīs peak in 44 so having 150 3.7 inch guns in a base somewhere in the Burmese jungel is off... even more off is the result of the flak fire against IJAAF bombers at 11,000ft... US heavy bomber crews didnīt like Berlin as a target because they knew this wouldnīt be a cakewalk but they were flying twice as high or higher and were flying in so called Flying FORTRESSES for example... I beg your pardon, but AFAIK the IJAAF bombers werenīt famous for being flying tanks ala IL-2... too me, flak is far from being correctly modelled, sorry to say that. Perhaps Iīm just wrong and thatīs perfectly realistic... I do know how the loss ratios in real life looked like though and I also know that there werenīt these UBER flak concentrations like Iīve got one here at Toungoo... heck, more than 50% of the available heavy flak in India has been put into Toungoo... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Toungoo , at 57,50 Weather in hex: Light cloud Raid spotted at 32 NM, estimated altitude 15,000 feet.
