we only lose 49 bombers A2A and one to flak... everything ok here... as is in Cuttlefish vs Q-Ball AAR. 130 Allied ac shot down in late 42 for 3 Zeros lost... seriously people that think this is ok have lost all their sanity...

and then you´re told you should run your vents through a sanity filter before posting... why? This is insane anyway... IMO there´s a long way to go and the devs should admit it instead of being pissed off everytime someone brings up something that can´t be working as designed. Or is a 130:3 kill rate WAD?

Back to my game, we had only a 50:0 today... greetings from WITP...

Underwater explosion, debris and oil appear on surface!
Escort abandons search for sub

we still try to attack mini KB and end up nearly every turn in the same hex as the carriers it seems... in this case, the worst thing happened... 3 hits and another 4 misses sink the sub immedietely... those long range Dutch subs are the best subs the Allied have in the game until late 43. Most endurance (10.000) and lots of working torps, so losing one is a little tragedy... this was by far the most succesful ASW attack of the Japanese so far...

17 troops of a SNLF Squad lost in surf during unload of Sasebo 8th SNLF

enemy troops land at one of the Southern coastal Chinese bases... in fact this is a French one... I hope the Japanese advance into most of my empty frontline bases as I´m losing at least three vp each turn to partisan attacks...

SS Triton launches 6 torpedoes at AMC Nosiro Maru

we hit one of the IJN AMCs... the raider is surely in trouble now with no bigger port anywhere near this location... the route to Truk is still not heavily invested with enemy ASW forces... we do have a lot of subs there though...

now this was great, surface attack, no torps fired and two 3 inch shell hits... must have been a drunk skipper... lonely fat AK on the shipping lane to Truk...

duds... what else... why subs keep firing at escorts is beyond me... know that the last hotfix has toned down the succesful attacks against escorts but so far I hit them at a very high rate. Only thing that is saving them are the duds. IMO there are far too many attacks on escorts and it´s the target routine that needs a little tweek, but who am I to say that? Only getting fire for it...

looks like we´re facing the first Japanese offensive in China... this is the dot base North East of Loyang in North Eastern China... as the Japanese have marched overland into this dot base I guess their first target will be Loyang. They have to do a river crossing into this base but the river crossing has lost a lot of it´s danger so I don´t expect much...

another bad day for Allied forces. We lose Clark field and were forced to retreat to Bataan, leaving the remaining 5000 supplies behind. Our forces have been set on combat/march to Bataan for two weeks but on average only moved a couple of miles a day. We would have needed another two or three days to move out but this attack broke our neck. As Rainer said, it would have been a good idea to set the troops to "move" right after his attacks but I didn´t dare to do that as he back to back deliberate attacked in Singapore more than once and I feared the same happening at Clark Field. 7th Feb and the Philipinese are mopped up so to say. Supplies have been running out anyway and my troops are now sitting in their last base without any combat ability left. Rainer already asked me if I would have any preferences for his next invasions (except Java of course which is clear anyway). Doesn´t matter, at this stage of the war the Japanese can take whatever they want anyway, they just have to bring enough force...

a fat transport is sent to hell, one of the rare occasions when more than one torp hits it´s target. But with the better damage routines of AE a single torp usually is enough to cause real trouble to a merchant which IMO is better than what we´ve seen in WITP.

but there´s another halve dozen more Zeros coming in and two of the Dutch defenders were shot down with a couple more being damaged... a Zero crashes on it´s way home, total losses were 4 Dutch and 2 Zeroes... an excellent ratio... after seeing the two small sweeps I was waiting for some bombers to show up but unfortunetely none came in... a pity... the fighters are stood down again...

Huzi Maru takes a third bomb hit but still doesn´t show heavy damage... tough ship, it´s a big AP and a nice valuable target... perhaps it would have been better to use some smaller APs to reinforce the frontline as they aren´t as valuable and more but smaller APs would unload faster... but what am I saying, I´m using my Queen to pick up troops from small atolls...

and here´s the fourth hit on the big AP, guess the ship is in serious trouble now... what I don´t like to see is the reinforcing of Milne Bay, this makes it pretty much obvious that Rainer wants to build up this base and we´ve spotted another TF going into this direction... both Milne Bay and Port Moresby are vulnerable though and he will need some troops to effectively defend them I guess...

one of the two enemy divisions in Burma are further moving North against no opposition... I´m doing nothing against it and I don´t care about Burma anyway... goal was and still is to get as many troops out of the death trap and except some small set back we were able to do so... I could use my British bombers to drop some 250lb bombs but I rather have them on nav attack training to intervene with a possible Japanese invasion of India. And my fighter squadrons are mostly on training to compete with the enemy when they have to. Same goes for most of the rest of my squadrons on the map, nearly all bombers are set to nav attack training (the rest either is on nav attack or is doing nav search) and my fighters are set to escort training...

unfortunately the attacker seems to always have been moving faster than we did, before we could move out the Japanese move in and kick us out of the hex... the troops from Northern OZ are all trashed anyway so it doesn´t really matter. Won´t set them on "accept replacements" until next year as I need the equipment for my other base forces and units, no sense building up those units from scratch if other units are in need of equipment at the same time...

The game showed it´s uggly face and we had a corrupt file... means both Rainer and I were able to watch the replay of this day but then the game had a problem during the leader reassignment phase and we had to redo the turn... wouldn´t have been a problem, but hey, of course it was exactly at the turn that contained a nasty surprise for the enemy... so here´s the turn we redid...

while all those sub attacks weren´t happening in the "original" turn, now a series of attacks that didn´t happen either in the "original" turn and that´s why I hate redoing turns... and it´s the worst if you can first watch the replay of a turn you then have to redo because this even more results in "differences".

three Zeroes on LRCAP over Milne Bay, probably coming from Lae... the first burst from a Zero took down a B-17 with ease, another one crashed on the way home... 2 bombers shot down for 3 Zeroes is quite effective so to say... won´t say it loud as I would only get shouted down... I wonder why I´m still allowed to do an AAR anyway and why my account is still working... with only 15 B-17E as monthly replacement it hurts to lose two heavy bombers...

and this is the nasty surprise I´ve mentioned. Now imagine, neither the 4E bomber attack nor the attack from my carriers went in in the "original" turn. We had to redo it and then this TF is trashed today. This should not have happened (not blaming the game for showing a different result when you redo a turn) and redoing turns is always a bad thing. I should be happy about it you will think, but I´m not really. Why? Because in the "original" turn we had a couple of SBDs spotting the enemy TFs at Milne Bay and vice versa. So my enemy knew the carriers were there and while in the "original" turn there were two fat TFs (including the heavy cruiser) sitting at Milne Bay at THE END of this turn, in the redone turn all the fat targets LEFT Milne Bay during the night already, bringing them out of range of my carriers tomorrow. So I would call it an equal advantage for both Rainer and me, for me because I caught some empty ships today and for Rainer because he brought his precious and troop carrying ships out of range due to leaving today already. If they wouldn´t have left tonight already, they would have been in perfect strike range tomorrow, as it stands now, our carriers will retreat South again. Guess he left the crappy CL Kashima in this TF as a consolation price for me guess when the troop loaden ships will return, they will do that under the cover of KB, means I have to be careful when having my 4E bombers on nav attack as I don´t want to see KB taking down three months of heavy bomber replacements...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Feb 11, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 98 encounters mine field at Rabaul (106,125)

Allied Ships
SS Tautog, Mine hits 1, heavy damage

I was told that subs won´t react into spotted minefields... well, I won´t bring up anything on the forum again other than here in my AAR. So I can only say what I´ve been told by a dev: subs don´t react into "bigger" (whatever bigger means) ports and they don´t react into ports that have a spotted minefield. So how did Tautog get there then if subs don´t do that? I´ve complained a lot in this AAR about my subs moving en masse and alltogether into enemy base hexes due to them reacting onto enemy TFs and in this case again, a sub hits a mine. Even if this AAR is only four pages long at this stage, I´m just too lazy to dig up when another sub hit a mine at Rabaul. Since then I had at least a dozen subs at Rabaul and they always reacted into the base, just as they do at Truk (where there´s this nice little red dot - yes this tells us there´s a minefield ) and many, many other bases too. Like I´ve said, I won´t bring it up as everything I say is wrong anyway... the new reaction routine is great (as many other things in AE) but it does exactly what we are always told not to do, it moves subs en masse into enemy ports (well at least in my games, perhaps I´ve got unique results again). So while this new routine is great, it isn´t working as I would call it "well".

Tautog is crippled and has perhaps a 30% chance to make port...

with this reinforcement we won´t hold Palembang much longer... perhaps we can damage the oil fields or the resource site. The most sensitive on the forum will yet again say that I suck just because I ask this question (yes, only in this AAR though): is the damaging routine still working in AE. I´m asking because I have so far nothing (nothing at all) damaged and have yet to see an AAR mentioning ANY damaged to oil/HI/resources/refineries. So is it working or not?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are Alliede ground casualties only from the return fire of the Japanese ships id say.
And yes the IJN should still be able to move troops with all ships up to BB but, according to the manual, on larger vessels there is a very high penalty on device size, haven´t calculated it
but it might be possible that a BB has a too high penalty to transport troops.

The damage routine is still working but from my experience the effects have been toned down compared to stock.

Subs still react into minefields in enemy bases sometimes, thats why I´m usually limiting my patrolling subs so that the enemy ports
are out of reaction range. Can´t help thos two in the war that double react sometimes though.

oh sorry, yes of course they are Allied ground casualties stupid me

I´m putting my subs on patrol away from ports too, not just because I don´t want them to run into enemy pots but also due to the fact that I want them to hit ships some hexes away from bigger port, otherwise the targetted ships have a higher chance to make it. At least that´s my theory. Even with reaction 1 I still seem to end up with subs in base hexes, no matter if there are mines or if it´s a "bigger" one (while I still don´t know what bigger is supposed to be).

thanks for the info on the damage routine, good to know there´s at least the chance to see something damaged.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Feb 12, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Amami Oshima at 98,62

Japanese Ships
PB Seki Maru #3
PB Toko Maru #4

Allied Ships
SS Sailfish

SS Sailfish is sighted by escort
PB Seki Maru #3 fails to find sub and abandons search
PB Toko Maru #4 attacking submerged sub ....
Escort abandons search for sub

while we really respect IJN DDs (accounted for two subs sunk so far) and IJN mines of course, we don´t really respect IJN PBs. They do drive our subs off lots of times of course or act as targets that usually aren´t sunk, so IMO they are quite effective in their task, they are not at all effective in sinking (not even damaging) our subs...

and a big strike against Palembang, coming from Malaya... looks like the IJA has by far not the same coordination problems we have if we try to launch three dozen heavy bombers against Port Moresby or even worse when on nav attack... Perhaps Rainer has more air HQs in range of his bombers which we more or less lack completely... there are just none available yet...

Assaulting units:

looks like Rainer is sending a mot unit to pursue my fleeing units from Darwin... we´re off the road to Tennant Creek already and while I´m pretty sure the Recon Rgt will be faster than we are, I don´t consider it much of a threat with it´s 38 assault value as we still have more than 100 within our units that are moving South. So as long we have all our units moving together, the Recon Rgt should not be a threat.

Rainer has brought reinforcements and fields 300+ av but he´s not attacking yet... why?

and here´s the most important news of this turn. KB showed up. I´m not surprised at all to see it in this position today because with redoing a turn the Japanese had one more day to react and obviously did this with hindsight. I had some hindsight too in thinking it would be better to bail out with my carriers as I was sure that if KB would be at Truk it would have been set to move South at the day we had to redo. And with KB´s position today, it seems I was right. My carriers are far enough away not to be in real danger and full speed moves over more than one or max two days isn´t really possible in AE anyway. And KB would need at least two more days at full speed to catch my carriers. We´ve spotted KB and I told Rainer that we did so I wonder where KB will move to. He only told me: "perhaps KB will find some other targets". Nothing but a couple of small xAKLs around that were heading to their targets alone to bring some supplies. At the moment I can´t see one of my major convoys being in danger of ending up with KB anytime soon. And if you think about KB´s normal speed of 4+4 hexes each turn then it will take some time to get KB into position to catch my convoys that are moving at 3+3 each turn.

One more thing I wonder is how much fuel does the IJN have at Truk and how long can KB sustain operations South of Truk. Probably enough fuel and enough time to cause trouble. But so far the trouble only means to reroute some convoys.

3 plane(s) intercepting now.
Group patrol altitude is 8000
Raid is overhead

we´ve met 3 Zeroes over Milne bay recently and lost a B-17 A2A and one to ops. We meet again three Zeroes over PM today and again lose one bomber A2A and one to ops. So in the last two encounters, 6 Zeroes took down 4 heavy bombers. Not encouraging at all and for sure not something to rate the 4Es as being really hard to be shot down by Zeroes. Don´t know if this is leaking Cap from Buna or if it´s LRCAP. As it stands now it clearly shows me that I can´t fly any attacks with my 4Es as soon as there´s enemy opposition, not even if it´s as small as 3 Zeroes. We can´t afford to lose 4 bombers in two small attacks against a twice really small Cap when we only get 15 bombers each month. The only way to use the 4Es would be to have escorts but there won´t be a single fighters until 1945 that could escort my bombers from Townsville to Port Moresby. Everything that is more than 5 hexes away from an Allied base is out of escort range until late 42 when it will change to 6 hexes. Both ranges means there´s not much in range and both ranges are even shorter than they were in WITP. At the moment I´m a bit puzzled what to do...

You are not going to see the fleet boats do well in torpedo attacks until after 1/43. An aggressive commander might surface and attack an unescorted ship(s). Wait until a couple torps bounce off the Akagi. Now that is frustration.

yeah, I know. I´ve started some statistics on 25 Jan and we´re nearly a month later... it doesn´t look good, at the moment I´m below a 20% rate of exploding SALVOS, so considering you get more than one torp hit on average out of a salvo of 4 or 6 torps I´ve got some really bad die rolls. As soon as we´ve reached 25 Feb I will post the first result.

Frustration? In regards to Akagi you will get some info about this within the next couple of turns...

I did a small test for a few weeks and was seeing about a 15% explosion rate with US torps.

that´s more or less what I´m seeing too in this so far limited statistic. 15% means pretty bad die rolls though as you can only count the salvos each time and like I´ve said, we´re talking about more than one hit on average out of salvos of 4 or 6 torps (which are most of the salvos). Even if you get 20% exploding salvos you would still have bad luck as this would mean the dud torp rate you suffer would be higher than 20%. The question of course is what is the game doing? Is it really looking at "salvo fired, x torps hit and then has a die roll for every torp that hit" or is it just "salvo fired, SALVO hit, die roll for salvo (with the dud rate of the torp that was fired in the salvo).

If it really looks at the torps then everything equal or lower than 20% (for MK14 torps) would be really bad due to the before mentioned fact that you fire salvos and you have more than 1 torp hit on average (even if it would be 1.33 or whatever). As you get more than a one time 20% chance per salvo.

great one once again... the worst thing that can happen is when a sub decides to attack a lonely freighter on the surface with it´s pop gun only... not one torp fired and 10 3 inch shells don´t do any real damage while the 8cm and 12cm hits on the sub in return are enough to send it back into the shipyard. Don´t know how many hits the sub really suffered, it ended up with 18 sys damage. So hopefully 4 hits were FOW as I guess even one hit of a 8 or 12cm gun should cause serious damage to a sub...

As mentioned, KB is in the house and is cruising around North West of New Caledonia at the moment. There was one nav strike today that saw no bombers locating the target. This was due to the fact that again every target, that has been within KBs bombers on nav search, was sunk before the strike phase. Just like around Northern Australia when KB sunk over a dozen of my freighters with nav search only, today there were TWO small AKs in range of KB and BOTH were sunk by bombers on nav search. Now I of course don´t know if this is mass employ of bombers on nav search (wouldn´t make much sense when you try to hunt three US carriers with KB) or if those UBER bombers are so good to sink everything within range without even launching a real strike. Again, no test is done, but this observation once again strikes me. KB around Northern Australia has sunk more freighters with nav search attacks than it did with nav strikes, the same thing now. All my freighters in KB´s range would have been sunk by nav search only anyway, they were dead in the water when the real nav strikes went in. Nice new little "feature" it seems.

even if the operations report doesn´t show it, my two xAKL that were in range of KB (the only ships except subs) have been probably spotted more than two dozen times during the replay. Both suffered 4 hits and were gone even before the strike phase. Would I have had 6 ships, all 6 would have been sunk (or put into a hopeless state) during the nav search phase, as seen around Northern Australia before. Guess this is also WAD so what shalls... while I´ve thought Rainer would have used massed nav search around Northern Australia it would just not make sense to have more than 10-20% of his bombers on nav search when he tries to pursue my carriers now, therefore I doubt that he really had an extreme nav search rate. I won´t ask him because I don´t want to have that kind of intel. So it seems nav search is more than effective, must be the same as with mines. You only get a small percentage of what you got in WITP, but achieve the same result in the end. So far I had no problem at all to spot the enemy with my limited number of patrol ac, nothing worse than in WITP, so I guess the patrols are more effective. Or am I just mega lucky?

some air attacks in China, can´t figure out yet where the enemy´s advance will take place... a good guess is the Loyang, Chengchow (sp?) area in the North... this is just a buffer for me, if we see no chance (and I don´t consider us having a chance against a determined IJA offensive) then we will move towards Sian which I intend to defend at all cost... while Sian itself is clear terrain, the terrain around it is well suited for the defense and my goal is to defend Sian outside of the base anyway... I wonder if AE has made a step forward in it being able to reduce forts outside of bases, in WITP this wasn´t posstible... we´ll see...

I´ve expected Rainer to send KB to either Brisbane or Sidney (or to both bases) to bomb the port and airfields, so I´ve sent out the 10 operational subs that were in Brisbane´s port. The last two days it looked like KB would move straight South into my expected shipping lanes to Australia and KB already has been sighted West of Noumea, so it looked like my subs would all miss the enemy due to KB being faster on it´s way South. But now KB swings North West again and is no the same height as Brisbane and ends up in the middle of my Wolfpack. The IJN carriers passed over several of my subs and ends up together with three of them in the same hex at the end of the day. As it looks now we could see KB moving in to attack Brisbane tomorrow or moving back to Truk. Perhaps my subs scared Rainer a little and perhaps we get another shot at a juicy target, to score a dud...

another big TF at Milne Bay again, this one is probably the same that bailed out and escaped my carriers during the turn we redid... another big TF was spotted West of Milne Bay, being identified as CS CS CA CA... have my 4Es on nav attack but they didn´t launch, I´m not sure if this isn´t a small carrier TF that is acting as high value target for my airforce to guard this TF at Milne from air attacks... as long as my bombers don´t launch I won´t find out... if I had to guess, I would say this TF consists of some 500lb bomb prove CAs escorted by some DDs...

the enemy doesn´t suffer any real losses from those daily attacks... guess the enemy bombers have quite a high skill in ground bombing already, but I don´t care much about this anyway as the most important skill for bombers IMO is nav bomb to hurt enemy shipping. Even with low ground bombing skill you get hits on an airbase but without a high nav bomb skill you don´t get any hits on shipping...

Rainer knows how the game works... the Zero has a better man rating at 30.000ft than a P-40 (the best Allied fighter until late 42 ) has at 5.000 ft, therefore he sends them in at nearly max alt. The Zeroes are killers if THEY get bounced and are invincible when they are on sweep and bounce our fighters. And when coming in at 30.000ft Rainer can be sure to bounce my fighters. Wonder if the intention of the developers was to create an Airwar in the stratosphere type of game... I won´t blame my opponent nor any other player to send his fighters in at the most effective alt but I really wonder how realistic the game is, or how good (I´m sure there will be again enough people pissed off by just this sentence...) This is even higher than the fighting in Europe took place and we all know that the clashes in Europe took place in considerable higher alts than in the Pacific, yet the game produces exactly the opposite. And this is surely not something the players are responsible for. You do the best you can and you use your material at the best way you can in the game. And we were also TOLD to do so (remember the "you have to know the altitude bands of your ac, otherwise you lose"). If this is possible in a complete ahistorical, better say unrealistic way then you still do it. You don´t have to know the altitude bands, you only have to know that every Japanese fighter has better man ratings than the Allied fighters, no matter at what alt, so the solution is to send in the Japanese fighters at more or less max range as this gives you the man advantage and the still allmighty BOUNCE. The game should keep you from doing it IMO, at least in such cases when it comes down to aircraft stats. I can´t remember the IJNAAF seeing 30.000ft sweeps as the most effective, but perhaps I´m remembering the wrong numbers when thinking about the sweeps against Guadalcanal for example. Again something I will only say here in this AAR, I would get shot for it saying it in the main forum... the harm is done, the harm is done...

When more or less all Japanese fighters (no matter if early or late war ones) have better man ratings at 30k ft than Allied ac have at 10k ft then I wonder how this will turn out, especially as the Japanese advanced types are only marginally slower than the Allied ones. The P-40 still being the most important fighter far into 43 then both isn´t true as the P-40 will be slower and less maneuverable than the IJA fighters. I know this is critizising the game again (or one of it´s routines) and people may ask why I still play it. Well, it´s the only game of this depth about this theatre. While I´m not even particularly interested in the Pacific war, there´s no other game of this depth of any theatre (at least none that I know of).

Keep at it and most importantly keep your style.

Many might get "offended" by the sarcastic remarks but many of them have valid concerns. That might be one of the reason why thimg get so "hot" at times!

As for few of your comments. Well, Zero flying around 30 000 feet are very very tough customers. The bounce is real killer and can hurt your reduced aircraft pools in the longrun.

The resource "damaged ratios" are no news either. I had similar experience around the DEI with very limited damage done to any resource centers. Actually Palempang was seized fully intact along with other bases in the region.

The above ofcourse might be FOW so I cannot confirm this but that what the game showed me too.

Other than your submarines will be an asset. I'am moving them around and they get hits in late 1942's.

I'am not going to any detailed discussion since my PBEM partner most likely will read. Just letting you know that you are not the only one who has seen such things.

Keep at it and best of luck!

I have seen reduced damage to resource/oil sites in AE compared to WITP. It is what it is and doesnt really bother me. More targets for the subs in 43.

Despite what some of the developers have said about picking the right altitude for P39/40s they suck at all altitudes except against the Nates when fighting a smart opponent. Basically one has to wait for the Corsairs to arrive to even things out in the South Pacific and OZ. I have had fairly good success with the Hurricanes set at 30k in Burma but I have to pick my fights. There are two Canadian squadrons that I buy out and send to India/China that also have Hurricanes. I sweep with the Hurries and escort with P40Ks. Incidentally, once you get close enough to his air bases, your foe really cant stop night attacks. I usually come in at 10k (balloons are effective at lower alt and nasty) with B17/24/25/26 and Wellies. Only get from 1-4 planes per night, but over a month that starts to add up. Then a few days sweep with Corsairs, if in range, and the airfield is usually abandoned. P28s have disappointed me but I may have pressed them into service too soon. Will build up their experience in future games to over 60 before committing them to the meat grinder.

And I dont meant to add fuel to the fire, but if you combine sweeps with an air attack, expect your sweeps to go in last. And I dont care what side you are on and this happens even if the airfield with the sweep flights is closest to the action. They prefer to wait until the cap is exhausted on the bombers before joining the fray. I have found it more effective to sweep for a few days then send in the bombers. Escorts dont like to fly with bombers unless at the same altitude and from the same base. It also helps if they all went to primary school together. Finally, the more complicated your air or naval attack is, the more likely Murphy will strike and strike hard at the most vulnerable point.

Hi

I guess I will keep my style - that´s just how I am - but I will limit myselve not to take it out in the main forum as I was more than just surprised about the flak I took there. Have to admit that I wasn´t aware that I´ve been the most annoying a$$hole over the last five years, so it was, kind of surprising. Funny thing is I didn´t even want to piss off someone. There are many things that could work better in the game, no difference to WITP. The difference I´ve noticed though will be that WITP was constantly improved over the patches, but according to jwilkerson and michaelm this won´t really happen with AE, as bug busting will more or less be the only thing to come with future patches. And that´s the downside, because while I like a lot of the new features, many of them need work and improvement. But hey, that´s my oppinion. I could count them up now, but I fear that this post could lead to another flak party then. If you follow my AAR, it´s unavoidable anyway to notice what I´m thinking about things.

I also appreciate all the work that was put into AE and am amazed what was brought up from people that weren´t even paid. Nevertheless there are some issues IMO and noone should get offended just because those issued are posted on the forum.

you´re correct and a dozen of the big TK lost is worse for the Japanese than losing 200 refineries in Palembang but nevertheless it seems to me that the chance to actually do some damage should be bigger. IMO, it was just fine in WITP. The chances there were quite good for the attacker that he takes sites undamaged, there were those exceptional happenings when you saw a lot (or even complete) destruction, but they were very very rare IMO. As it is now, it seems like 95% of the times there is no damage at all and the 5% rest there´s damage on a dozen points. No, this is not an official test scenario statistic.

Not to forget is the fact that I´ve started this PBEM with my all time hr for PBEMs that doesn´t allow Allied strategic bombing against Japanese occupied Allied teritory. This means enemy oil, res, Hi... is pretty much save and the Japanese can plan right from the start with a 100% output of all the targets he will attack. I would again start with my hr, but there should still be the same die roll for damaging the sites when you have troops there. In WITP there was often damage done even when you had NO troops there (which I didn´t like ).

Finally, the more complicated your air or naval attack is, the more likely Murphy will strike and strike hard at the most vulnerable point.

so true, all you´ve said is something I totally agree with. After finding out that I can´t do anything against the Zero high alt sweeps I bailed out everywhere. There´s just no sense to use your P-40 if you lose them at a 5:1 or higher loss rate, no matter what alt you set them. You go high, your smart opponent just goes higher. In every altitude band the Zero is so much superior to your P-40 that it does not make sense to put them up in front of the Zeroes 20mm cannons. You can harm them on escort but the stratosphere sweep bounce is the mega killer. I´ve complained about the bounce in WITP for halve a decade now, in AE it became even more frightening. I really would like to see a daitai of Zeroes bouncing from 30.000ft on some Warhawks on 10.000ft... if they really would do zoom and boom, I guess the fragile Zeroes would just break apart. Thus leading to what we see in PBEMs, fights in the vicinty of Sputnik. And this with aircraft that were supposed to fight at low and medium alts in real life. Again I have to question if this is ok. And again I have to say that of course PBEM players use their aircraft at the best possible alt and this is the HIGHEST alt possible when doing sweeps. Always stay above your enemy. Have Allied fighters and stay above your enemy and you will have a chance to perhaps do some damage too, have Japanese fighters and you whipe the floor with enemy CAP if your sweep comes in and bounces out of the stratosphere.

Another difference between WITP and AE is when the sweeps are going in. As you say you end up mostly with the sweep coming late, even if you had your sweeping and far faster fighters (compared to the bombers) closer to the target. In WITP I achieved a 100% rate of sweeps going in earlier than the bombers when the sweep was closer to the target. This under the condition that the sweep flew of course. Now all you can do is not to bomb at all the day you have a sweep but this of course will make it harder and we were always told to do everything the same day anyway to disrupt the enemy Cap. Now you can only fight it out day after day and hope you will kill more fighters than you lose. And finally send in some bombers that hopefully also get some escorts. IMO this has all become far too random and doesn´t reflect history or better say reality at all. It seems you have a far higher chance to see everything screwed up now, no matter under what conditions, even under the best conditions you have it screwed up more often than not.

With me doing the full Sir Robin with my airforce I was able to build up a nice stock of P-40 and also a couple of dozen Hurricanes at the moment. I´ve also done extensive training and have rotated pilots for hours and hours and hours. The result now is that I´ve got enough fighters for a couple of days of fights and all squadrons have decent air and def skill. But we will still be fighting at the disadvantage that the Zero and the Oscar are the better aircraft at all heights. And our fighters don´t have enough speed advantage to make up the disadvantage of being on Cap, being probably at lower alt and being less maneuverable. But hey, I can of course set them on max alt... 32.000ft? So the Zero will rule until we get P-40K which is quite fast and the man rating seems to be ok at mega high altitude. But by then, the IJAAF will field hundreds of Tojos that have replaced the Oscars and the Tojo once again beats all the Allied fighters until the Corsair. Why? Because the Tojo is slightly slower than the P-40 (far faster than the Hurricane so forget about all your British fighter squadrons) but far more maneuverable again and so the Japanese again win the round - at least when I look at the stats. So it comes down to pilot quality. And this is, like mentioned earlier, an equal fight between the Japanese and the Allied. The Allied don´t have the edge on pilot quality either as it only takes the Japanese four weeks more to train a pilot that has not passed flight school up to 65 skill than what it takes the Allied to train up a rookie that came out of flight school to 65 skill due to the training now being quite effective again.

In this PBEM, we´re 10 weeks into the war and I´ve got so many 60 skill pilots in the reserve pool that I could swap out my fighter squadrons two times at least, so I would run out of aircraft faster than I will run out of skilled pilots now. And this won´t change as I will keep training hundreds of pilots. What I´ve seen so far, Rainer is an excellent opponent and sure knows what to do, therefore I expect him to have a well working pilot training too and I also expect him to completely outproduce me with high end fighters.

The limited damage to the dutch Oil fields is probably due to the low ammount of engineers they have
at the bases. They do the damage on retreat.
I wonder if it helps to stack the afew eng units at the most important ressource/oil bases to maximize the
chances of damage when they get attacked.

I´ve moved all the available units into Palembang that I could move there overland. That´s the reason why Rainer had to reinforce his troops. Didn´t help in damaging anything though. I wouldn´t want to move in more troops from somewhere else though trying to get a better die roll of which I´m not really sure it would achieve something.

I have not seen or read of any serious damage to the resource centers except when they have been evacuated by the Allies. A smart foe will spend most of 42 using his tankers and cargo vessels extracting as much from the DEI that is possible before US fleet boats become more effective. That should limit expansion plans-naturally that has not happened by most JFB's yet, although in one of my PBEMs, we are into 4/43 and my foe wishes he had done that instead of invading Darwin. I sink about 2 ships a day now and that is after the reaction range was reduced to 1.
