Estimated time to target is 15 minutes Japanese aircraft Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 38 No Japanese losses Aircraft Attacking: 38 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar sweeping at 38000 feet have moved in a lot of fighters yesterday to fly Cap because I had two ships unloading here... knowing of course that the daily recon over Akyab will notice this and the result would be massed Oscar sweeps at max altitude (higher than all my fighters here could go)... Iīve moved the fighters out again as I kept my freighters only one day there to unload and the Oscars swept an empty sky... amazingly enough, their attacks didnīt coordinate and we could have had a chance with massed fighters in the air as 38 attackers arenīt enough to have the neverending bounce when facing 100+ fighters on Cap... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Akyab , at 54,45 Weather in hex: Light cloud Raid detected at 47 NM, estimated altitude 41,000 feet. Morning Air attack on Prome , at 55,50 Weather in hex: Heavy cloud Raid detected at 40 NM, estimated altitude 7,000 feet. Group patrol altitude is 6000 Raid is overhead leaking Cap... leaking Zero Cap from Rangoon (3 hexes)... while trying to pick off leaking Oscar Cap in Burma with my Ligthnings, I have forgot about thinking about leaking Cap over Prome. Prome is in range of two bases with fighters on Cap and the IJAAF Awacs over Burma directed in nearly a dozen Zeroes from Rangoon to have a field day... the 11 Zeroes shot down 16 Blenheim (a monthly replacement) with more bombers lost to ops... what a disaster... I wouldnīt have attacked if I would have thought about leaking Cap or if my recon would have given me intel about a single fighter at this base. Recon was right, at the base itselve, there were only bombers (Sallies) so Iīve set over a hundred bombers to launch an attack... my bad like Iīve said, a disaster... clearly shows me once again that using medium bombers is a nogo, even more so when weīre talking about 100% crap like Blenheims or Hudsons... unfortunetely the Blenheims seem to be the backbone of the RAF in India until really late in the war. Leaves us with a monthly replacement of 6 (in words: s i x) Wellingtons for the RAF... all Blenheim squadrons have been pulled from the front and are now doing rear are training. Will then have a dozen elite crews for each Wellington to man... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Prome , at 55,50 Weather in hex: Heavy cloud Raid detected at 40 NM, estimated altitude 11,000 feet. Estimated time to target is 13 minutes Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 3 Allied aircraft Blenheim IV x 29 Wellington Ic x 14 B-25C Mitchell x 13 Japanese aircraft losses Ki-21-IIa Sally: 3 destroyed on ground Allied aircraft losses Wellington Ic: 2 damaged B-25C Mitchell: 2 damaged Japanese ground losses: 9 casualties reported Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled Airbase hits 12 Airbase supply hits 9 Runway hits 76 Aircraft Attacking: 15 x Blenheim IV bombing from 6000 feet Airfield Attack: 4 x 250 lb GP Bomb 14 x Blenheim IV bombing from 6000 feet Airfield Attack: 4 x 250 lb GP Bomb 14 x Wellington Ic bombing from 6000 feet Airfield Attack: 8 x 500 lb GP Bomb 13 x B-25C Mitchell bombing from 6000 feet Airfield Attack: 6 x 500 lb GP Bomb CAP engaged: 15th Ku S-1 with A6M2 Zero (3 airborne, 0 on standby, 0 scrambling) 3 plane(s) intercepting now. Group patrol altitude is 6000 Raid is overhead here comes the follow on strike and Iīm quite happy that the bombers launched in two strikes as it could have been far worse... the Wellington proves not to be real combat worthy either as two crashed and are rated as op losses... so much about the RAF bomber force, itīs useless so to say... got 6 Beaufort I that donīt get a single ac as replacements until late 42. Got a lot of 100% useless Blenheim and one squadron with Wellingtons that has just lost two of them. Leaves me with another halve a dozen Wellingtons in the pool. Ok, we have to rely on the fighter squadrons then, theyīre all equipped with various types of Hurricanes with some 50 fighters in the pool. The Hurricane does ok vs. the Oscar and does very good against the Zero (due to having the altitude edge). What will be a problem will be the fact that June 42 means the entry of the Tojo and when comparing the Hurricane vs Oscar vs Tojo then say good bye to holding our own... Even worse when I think about the P-40... am receiving some more US bomber and fighter squadrons in India (the AVG will be withdrawn soon though) and am also moving in some more US squadrons via ship. Will have to use US bombers for offensive actions and also have to rely on US fighter squadrons to take the losses as the British squadrons just arenīt enough I fear. The main problem though will be the fact that I wonīt have enough US bombers to equip US squadrons in India, not even thinking about keeping them at strenght... and my losses in this PBEM have been.... light, really light... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on 24th Infantry Regiment, at 76,137 (Tennant Creek) Weather in hex: Clear sky Raid spotted at 21 NM, estimated altitude 9,000 feet. Group patrol altitude is 25000 Raid is overhead Also attacking 2nd Recon Regiment ... Also attacking 24th Infantry Regiment ... Also attacking 2nd Engineer Regiment ... Also attacking 24th Infantry Regiment ... clear sky today but also some Zeroes in the air... I just canīt believe how it works to have Zeroes on LRCAP here every day, not suffering any losses... or my recon and bomber attacks are completely useless and canīt give me intel about where those fighters really are... the airfield here is empty, as well as Daly Watersī airfield... Katherine is the only one that is occupied, some 9 or 10 hexes away from Tennant Creek... so how does this work? The same question could be asked around Buna and Lae when I only get intel about empty airfields everywhere around but still a dozen fighters in the air no matter what base I attack in this region... Woodoo? a single attack on a Marauder took the bomber out again... will have to upgrade another medium bomber squadron to the B-17 (some 20 in the pool) and will have to revert to heavy bomber attacks only... the medium bombers can only be used in escorted attacks or in attacks against 100% uncapped targets. Problem with escorting them is a) donīt have fighters that have sufficient range (except the Aussie Beaufighters) and b) if I would escort them, I would lose halve a dozen fighters doing the escort as they would just get chopped to pieces... so I will have to use the B-17 instead, the best fighter/bomber combo on the map... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on 24th Infantry Regiment, at 76,137 (Tennant Creek) Weather in hex: Clear sky Raid spotted at 21 NM, estimated altitude 10,000 feet.
