I just purchased this game on recommendation of friends and wanted to see what other players were saying. I am disturbed because I see so many complaints about so many things. I like the game, and the way my friends play it is nothing like what I see here. I am beginning to think that I am in the wrong forum. Is there another?

AE is a large and complex game, with something for everyone and also with something for everyone to complain about.

Perhaps you should ask if people would recommend the game in total.

The French word 'grognard' means grumbler. It's used for veteran wargamers. You've just discovered why.

Nah, don't worry about the complaints. It just means that people that people take the game really seriously. Too seriously, perhaps. It is such a good thing that there are no wives or girlfriends in the forum -- otherwise you would reeeeeeeeeally see some complaints

This is a great community, and a great game.

I've used that word for years without knowing where it came from. You learn something new every day around here.

Welcome to the forum, Rdonlon! Don't be put off by the complaints. It is an enormous and complicated game, nothing else like it, and it generates a lot of opinion and debate. I think that in general you will find the people here to be enthusiastic about the game and very helpful to someone trying to learn how to play it.

You might take a look at some of the After Action Reports, where people discuss their ongoing games. More than anything, I think, that will give you an idea of how involving and how much fun this game can be.

We complain because we care. Most of us are perfectionists on this forum, and we want the game to be the best it can be.
We have invested alot of money and time into this game, and it has evolved over the years into its current version, and will continue to evolve.
The game probably wouldnt be as good as it is now, if it wasnt for the community, complainers included.

Hi Richard,

If you like a very detailed, involved wargame, there is nothing on the market like WitP-AE. The support by the devs is excellent. Gameplay problems and bugs are fixed quickly. Don't worry about the griping. Enjoy the game. It's supposed to be fun.

Tak

Welcome to the game ! I have played many wargames over the years, of all types. This is the best, and most enjoyable of them all in my opinion. It is also the most complicated and given the huge scope of the game there will always be soemthing to improve, or disagree on, or desire to change slightly and so forth.

So do what I do, read the forums to pick up on hints as to how to play the game better, and ignore those very few that seem to complain now and again just for the sake of doing so.

This is a great, and active community and you will learn a lot about the game and the Pacific War era by hanging around some

I think there are lot's more non-grumblers than grumblers on these forums but the grumblers do help to make the game better i reckon. Enjoy!

If the game was genuinely bad, people would just blast it on the forums and move on!! And yet they come back time and time again.

Don't be put off as they are grognards indeed....

Edit: I believe the term Grognard was coined by Napoleon for his Old Guard soldiers (doubly appropriate for the grumblers around here...)

I do appreciate everybody's comments. I agree with those people who think think this is a well put together game. It is the wierd people who post here that concerns me. Maybe I should just play the game and ignore anything posted on this forum.

Once again, I think that I am in the wrong forum. Is there another?

There are some decent German, French or even Japanese forums out there. But if those aren't your language of choice, you’re stuck with this one...

If the game you are playing/referring to is War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition, then this is the only forum. At least, the only Matrix Games forum. And there is a lot of very good, indeed essential, information about AE that can be found on this forum; it shouldn't be ignored.

At any rate, best of luck, and enjoy the game. If you are looking for another forum, try the General Discussion forum; there's no "weird people" there.

You're in the right forum, but maybe you should play the game a bit - note that whilst it's brilliant, it's not perfect (probably never will be - not for everyone) - and then perhaps lurk a bit before wading in - after all you have only been on the forum for less than a couple of hours or so and have only just bought the game by your own admission - so to criticise elements of the community some with many thousands of valuable posts is disingenuous at best

YOu will find wierd people everywhere. Here we have specialists in every aspect of the pacific war. You will learn a lot. About the game, about the war and about the people here.
Yes, we are wierd, yes we discuss strange topics, but most times in a friendly way.
Just get used to it and enjoy.

I do play. I play extensively. I know it's not perfect, nothing ever is. I do not, and did not, criticise the community, so your comment is the disengenuous one. I was looking for a sub-forum where people might be more like me. Apparently this is not happening here.

Well, we do get distracted by obtuse body parts ... as you can see from the below recent post ...

another example of anal discharge systems at work in AE

And hence this may not be a place "where people might be more like me" ... but this is ... overall ... a decent ... mostly adult group ... and they are serious about the game ... so .. you could do worse ...

AE was announced to be under development about two years ago in the WITP forum. Finally, late last July it was made available. Add together the number of hit this forum and the original WITP forum have and you will see that there a lot of passionate players from just about everywhere in the world. I thought I was fairly knowledgeable about WITP until about 5 years ago I got WITP as a Christmas present from me to me. I was wrong.

Not all the ideas that went into the "wish list" for this game made it. Some players continue to voice strong opinions about a particular omission that they "perceive" exist. We have gotten timely patches and even hot fixes on the weekend. That is a major plus for the developers, who are mainly players themselves that did volunteer to make this great game without financial compensation.

During the years I have had both games, only computer problems have slowed me down from enjoying it. My collection of other games just can dust.

ENJOY IT!! I know I do!

"The game probably wouldnt be as good as it is now, if it wasnt for the community, complainers included."

That is an absolute fact. Admiral's Edition was created by members of the forum, who wanted to improve WITP. Enough talented forum members banded together to create a proposal that Matrix couldn't refuse, and what they thought would be a one year project turned into four plus years of their lives... and they are still at it.

As others have mentioned, this is a huge and diverse community - and if you give it time you will learn a great deal about the Pacific Theatre of WW2, as well as many other subjects you had no idea might be interesting. With so many different personalities out there, people will rub each other the wrong way. Sometimes people forget the number one rule: Keep it Civil, but for the main part this is the most civil game forum I have ever frequented.

Keep reading the forum, and you might find that we ain't such a bad group of guys.
