Wow..that is a remarkable level of accuracy on bombers and fighters.

As I thought and had been my suspicion previously, the "aux" figure seems inflated.

I think we are probably up against Zuikaku and Soryu and one of them just lost 20 Kates or so.

Admiral Lord Sprior has just sent me the turn and is pressing on toward Port Headland. <makes sign of cross>

Just for a bit better view, I went back and did the same thing, only ran 4 turns. The IJ numbers are the same, and here is a montage of the 4 Allied observations:

The carrier plane figure is within 11% of the true value on all trials and the "aux" figure is 400-500% high on all trials (even if you count reserve aircraft as "aux")

I'm thinking that torpedo planes are being counted as both bombers and auxiliary. I'm pretty sure those old posts about them being counted as auxiliary were correct, but this test was run with current Beta (1108q4). And throw in a good dose of FOW.

Saw that.

Still, michaelm did not actually identify what "auxiliary" is supposed to represent. If the mouseover numbers subsequently drop markedly, "auxiliary" might mean whatever is left over, ie not a fighter or bomber.

The good news:

Cpt Tenant's prayer worked for Repulse. She has no surface combat, the jap carrier launch no attacks, Port Headland airfield is pounded to rubble (even more) and Broome is under severe storm watch due to global cooling.

The bad news...against regulation, one of the Amphib Group commanders is a Zoroastrian and calls on the moon god or some such thing....

Happily, the end is near for the two infantry divison-equivalents, the armored division, an air HQ, support troops and a shedload of heavy artillery on Fiji.

After a week and a half of continuous ground and air attacks they are attriting themselves to death.

This brings up a good question. Pretend I didn't read the manual...or pretend this isn't in the manual.

What determines battle order when an enemy surface TF enters a hex (in this case at night)?

Follow orders?

TF type?

Commander ratings?

TF numerology?

TF commander spiritual affiliation?

Bowel gas?

Tis' a mystery of life, herr Capitan. Supposition abounds.

It does seem (anecdotally speaking) that CV TFs are pretty high on the list of things SCTFs will preferentially engage. The low moonlight levels allowed these guys to be torpedoed by the small incoming surface raider TF. As our mirror campaign also demonstrated, CVTFs under 'follow' orders in proximity to an incoming enemy SCTF are particularly prone to butchery.

Night skill, captain ratings, crew ratings, presence or absence of radar / quality of same on lead defensive surface combatants probably plays a role too, but I don't think anyone is in the know about the formula, 'cept the programmers. And they ain't talking.

Back in classical WITP days, the TF number had a bearing in determining the order of combat. That is no longer the case in AE which has a complicated relationship set in place. Have a read of this thread, specifially Don Bowen's post #8.

That is quite enough Kimmil bashing.

I feel sorry for the guy.

Besides, we are in negative points and can't change any commanders.

I believe Nimitz is at SouPac but dont quote me on that.

HMS Repulse, somewhere in the Indian Ocean

Tannoy: D'you hear there, this is the captioan speaking. We are once again on our way to Port Hedland so the borwnjobs can get on and do their job. It's our job to make sure they can do their job. I know I can rely on you all to do your jobs so that the, er, brown jobs, can do their, er, job.*

Leading Stoker Jones: Oh bloody hell not again. Chief is going to be a right chump* now, he has some bint in Perth (not the Scottish one) he was hoping to get back to.

*************October 7, 1942************

Nevada is probably toast. The LYB carriers disappeared. Broome is beat up to the mid 40's and has bad weather again. Wyndham is packed with airplanes again, including 65 bombers.
