Bathurst: The Tiki Review and Bar-B-Q now open nightly near the ice cream shop. Yes, I know. Not very authentic, but two of the female dancers are 6 months pregnant so the Dance of the Seven Virgins was out.

Scene from Love and Death. The Woody Allen character hooks up with some hot Russian Countess. After the action the room is torn up with clothes strewn all over and the furniture turned over. The fatigued couple are in bed with abundant afterglow.

Hot Russian Countess: That was fahntahhsteek!

Boris: I'm such a great lover because I practice a lot when I am alone.

I have to watch that movie!

Thanks for finding that.

HRC: How long has it been since you made love to a woman?

Boris: Hmm...what is today...Wednesday...............two years.

My memory banks had been degraded by gamma rays over the years. They end up on the floor and the actual lines were:

Hot Russian Countess: You are the best lover I have ever had.

Boris: Yeah, well, I practice a lot when I am alone.

God, I love that movie.

Did you fire Mao Tse DUNG from the Red Army leadership? His stats are awful - only thing he had going for him was ruthlessness - but then, why would he have a girlfriend named Ruth in China?

In China, OSS had some intel an annoying commie by the name of Dung or some such thing. We sacked him and sent in Mr. Cartright from the Ponderosa along with his man-servant Hop Sing as translator and major domo. I think he will adapt well to army life, having lived out in the wilderness without women for some time. I suspect the PM will approve of the change.

Say, I hope it is OK but I started New Mexico toward Cape Town for repairs. She will be ready for your operation in Sumatra. Ramilles can leave Geraldton for Cape Town in about 5 d unless you want her to go to Ceylon. Pearl is busy and Sydney can't take vessels over 30,000 tons in drydock. Given the shortage of equipment - especially vehicles - in that theatre, will the new leader bring his son Hoss for bomber towing duties?

My Dearest Manders,

Thank you so much for you kindest of missives, they are always such a treat to read.

I'm not sure who this Dung person is, unless you're referring to Hoo Flung Dung? He is currently attached to the 47th Field Kitchen Company of the Royal Catering Corps.

New Mexico is always welcome in Commonwealth dockyards, I hope the crew likes tea but I'm not sure they'll have the spare parts for the ice-cream machine.

Yours at room temperature,

Admiral (Lord) Sprior

I knew it! He was in jail and got bailed out, so now he is in hiding somewhere - a place where "room temperature" does not require the wearing of sweaters and long johns. And he's getting Hai too! Good thing Adm. Mandrake has a firm grip on things ... and on the game too!

Darwin/Bathurst/Saumlaki: Remember that surface group that I creverly predicted would raid Saumlaki? Well, they fool us...they no show up. Wasp and the CVE's had "follow" orders but evidently the TF CO's need a brush up on their Engrish skills as they stayed put near Saumlaki. I think the problem is you can't trust "follow" orders when some of the ships get low on fuel (not red, but low). One of the transport groups at Saumlaki also failed to get the memo. Even so, disaster was avoided. I'm not sure why, but the leading hypothesis is that of our proven superior intellect over the LYB commanders.

Even so, there was this curious message from Rord Admirar Nerson broadcast in plain Engrish.

"How could we miss such a large target?"

I think he means this. It might have been ugly.

Sub attack near Saumlaki at 79,118

Japanese Ships
SS I-8

Allied Ships
CV Yorktown
CLAA San Diego
DD Clark
DD Cummings
DD Meade

Also, groups of unescorted Helens attacked both the ground troops and transports at Saumlaki with quite heavy losses. 15 Helens lost per intel reports.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Saumlaki at 78,117

Weather in hex: Overcast

Raid spotted at 5 NM, estimated altitude 6,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 1 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-49-IIa Helen x 20

Allied aircraft
Martlet II x 8
F4F-3A Wildcat x 1
F4F-4 Wildcat x 32

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-49-IIa Helen: 3 destroyed, 1 damaged

No Allied losses

Allied Ships

Darwin: A small transport group was unloading more AA guns at Darwin. This triggered an LYB artillery attack and brings up an interesting possible exploit. Call it "induced conterbattery on steroids". When a landing force has a potent artillery capability, and a landing of troops triggers enemy ground artillery fire, the induced conterbattery fire is much more effective than if we had ordered an offensive artillery barage. Exhibit A:

Ground combat at Darwin (76,124)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 12663 troops, 115 guns, 52 vehicles, Assault Value = 505

Defending force 44358 troops, 756 guns, 781 vehicles, Assault Value = 1394

Japanese ground losses:
404 casualties reported
Squads: 4 destroyed, 35 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 1 disabled
Guns lost 8 (1 destroyed, 7 disabled)
Vehicles lost 3 (2 destroyed, 1 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
2 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Assaulting units:
4th Engineer Co
21st Ind.Mixed Brigade
38th/A Division
18th Tank Regiment
38th/B Division
53rd JNAF AF Unit
107th JAAF AF Bn
52nd JNAF AF Unit
22nd Ind.AA Gun Co
5th Div /2

Defending units:
22nd Marine Regiment
193rd Tank Battalion
1st Marine Regiment
6th Marine Regiment
7th Australian Division
2/1 AIF Pioneer Battalion
I Aus Corps Engineer Battalion
632nd Tank Destroyer Battalion
2nd USMC Engineer Regiment

So here is how the proposed "induced conterbattery fire on steroids" exploit would work.

1) We continue unloading a couple of 2 1/2 ton trucks and an 81 mm mortar each day at Darwin.

2) JJ is induced to fire an artillery barrage.

3) Arried counterbattery fire does more damage than 2 BB's and 71 B-24's combined.

Rather, rinse, repeat.

New Scotland: The Marines reach La Foa. Ironic that after all those horrific losses on both sides in the battle for New Scotland, JJ just let's us waltz in. There is a Naval Guard unit at Noumea but i doubt they are in very good shape.

Ground combat at La Foa (114,159)

Allied Deliberate attack
