I am not sure the jealousy angle will work. They guy has to be 68-72 range and his hair turned from a very, very dark purplish black to shock white about 3 years ago.

On the other hand, if she finds out he spent $10,000 of his...I mean HER money on a mailbox, well then.....

The thing is, on a personal level, he is a likable guy. He is self made, having started his own business as a teen dealing in USED tires in Bakersfield. That is some serious upward mobility. Perhaps, if I could find the right combination of meds I might not suspect him of narcing to the HOA on me.....Oh, Hell, who am I kidding, the SOB is guilty as homemade sin. I hope she tears it down and mails the pieces to his new furnished apartment like some kind of KGB revenge op.

Fireworks again at New Scotland...more to come.

March 19: Such anger

The surface group at New Edinburgh has refueled and rearmed after the battle with the Jap battlewagons. After this exercise, only 2/3 of their operational points remain. It is deemed by Admiral Lake too dangerous to make a breakout*. Operational fighter strength at New Edinburgh is down to 40 airframes (mostly P-39D's).

The fast AP Matsonia (30 pts), which had been attempting a breakout to the West, but was taking on greater flooding, tried to make the "safety" of New Edinburgh, but was finished off by a Jap sub 40 m West of the port (the snarky captain of I-171 didn't even bother to submerge). At dawn a sweep of 9 Zeroes and 18 Oscars from New Ullapool appeared over New Edinburgh. They were met with 41 fighters (apparently somebody was busy in the hanger) and dispatched with a 2:1 loss ratio in favor of the Allies. This is a good sign that they seem to be running out of Zeroes in theater but it is clear that New Ullapool is operational again.

Despite this, the timing of the sweep is good for the Little Yellow Bastards** as it distracts and fatigues the CAP even if the losses are few (2 aircraft). Next on the scene is a big carrier raid (33 Vals, 38 Kates and 40 Zeroes). A raid that size cannot fail. They are met by a weakend CAP of 29 (mostly P-39's at 20,000 ft). They score 3 bomb hits on Chester. The Kates are armed with torps but dont score a single hit. The sneaky, inscrutable, near-sighted, culturally inferior Little Yellow Bastards lost 11 aircraft to 3 USAAF fighters.

In the afternoon, there is another big raid of 112 aircraft, mostly Vals and Zeroes. The CAP has dwindled to 21. Reid is sunk. Salt Lake City and Porter are hit heavily. Two DD's are lightly damaged. The sneaky, inscrutable, near-sighted, culturally inferior but alarmingly persistent Little Yellow Bastards lose another 10 aircraft to the loss of one P-39. Curiously, La Triomphant is never targeted.

Tally:

Sunk:

Chester (succumbs to previous damage)
Reid
Matsonia

Salt Lake City burning heavily
Porter serious flooding and fire

Air Losses:

LYB's: ca. 26
USAAF: 5

* The management assumes no responsibility for the action of it's employess

** Out of deference and in the spirit of international good will, the eponym "Little Yellow Bastards" will now be capitalized.

NOTE: Though a scrupulous effort has previously been made to avoid offensive and puerile nationalistic and racial generalizaion in this narrative, we are just getting really tired of the self-policing. So, you are on your own. No whining.

Plan for the 19th/20th:

Adm. Lake is now in charge of the base golf course at New Edinburgh.

The Jap BB's are retreating to the NW. The Jap cruisers are gone. New Ullapool is apparently devoid of shipping but who really knows with the McGoos on the job. The Jap carriers are on station near Tanna again. A small Jap force is headed South down the New and Improved New Hebrides. This may be a landing force for Tanna or Efate.

Allied surface combatants at New Edinburgh are at anchor. Salt Lake City has a serious fire and may not make it. A TF of 5 unescorted AK's are now docked and unloding supplies. Nobody say anything but they are there to act as bait for the carrier aircraft. I hope to use up all the torps on the carriers and attrit their fighter strength and make the nasty buggers go away. Fighter strength at New Edinburgh is up to 65 after transfers from Auckland and Suva. Runway damage now at 57%. I should be able to do some medium bomber sorties in 2 days or so.

The recently arrived Inf Regt and the USMC armored Bn are now on the Gryme's New Dyke Line.

If it weren't for the minor detail of the loss of Chester and Reid it would be winning strategy to trade P-39's for carrier aircraft at a 1:3 ratio

These seem to be a bit inflated.

Wow, thorough. For the RN medical exam they make you run across an empty room. If you fall over you're blind. The they send you to the RAF.

Meanwhile, Soerabaya stands up to another JJ assault inflicting heavy losses on the attackers. The RAAAAAF fighters originally based at Singers are picked up by some freighters at Denpasar and will continue the fight from Australia.

The first tankers arrive at Cape Town to begin the fuel shuttel service to Perth.

The airfiels at Ambon is pretty beat up but JJ hasn't landed any additional ground forces yet.

I too was impressed by the chaps in the short pants at Serabaja. Well done!

Ambon has been a much more effective speed bump for JJ than was Lautem....even though the nice airfield is now a smoldering pile of rubble. It might even be possible to counterattack with Aus. Avian Brigade before they can reinforce....or maybe not

What about the AO's at Sydney? Do you want them to join the shuttle of fuel from the US or do you want to retain them for at sea refueling there? They sound like they have Commonwealth names.

Cap Mandrake,

Two observations about Le Triumphant:

(1) Is it really likely that the phrase "Madre de Dios" would be uttered. Isn't it more likely to be "Sacre bleu", unless of course the "gentleman" in question is really a Basque frpm Bayonne or a Catalan from Perpignan and he is really making a geo-political statement as to where his real sympathies lie.

(2) Le Triumphant is probably not targetted by the Japanese because they still think she is a Vichy vessel and they wish to remain on good terms with the "legal" owners of the facilities in Indochina which are temporarily at the disposal of the Emperor.

If they've got the legs please use them, we won't be doing too much RAS in the near furture. The first tanker has arrived at the Cape and is filling its bunkers before heading to Perth.

I see JJ didn't attack Bataan or Soerabaya today, let's hope it's because they're smarting.

Beware, in AE you will have to send fuel to Cape Town from the East Coast (or somewhere else). Otherwise you will run out and have a bunch of stranded ships.

*****March 20, 1942, New Scotland******

The day dawns with a sacrificial raid of Oscars (12 vs 62 Allied fighters) over New Edinburgh. They forget to sacrifice themselves. The losses are 1 Oscar and 1 P-40E.

Then, the AK's at anchor are spotted and the fun begins. A morning raid of 13 Zeroes and 12 Kates encounter 52 Allied fighters over New Edinburgh. The get one torp hit but lose 8 aircraft.

An afternoon raid is stronger, 103 aircraft. They sink every one of the 5 AK's offered as bait but lose 7 more aircraft and 15 damaged.

The Jap cruisers near Tanna appear to have moved to New Ullapool. The Jap carriers have moved further North suggesting they are leaving. I don't completely believe this but I am still going to try to break out to the SSE everything that can make 28 Kts. Apparently Adm. Lake used too much water watering the greens in his new job as there is no water left to put out the fire on Salt Lake City. She will almost certainly sink. I am sending her S toward Auckland without escort. It will be a race to see which gets her first, the fire, the subs or the carriers.

More serviceable fighters are transfered from Suva. The cruisers at New Ullapool may well bombard again tonight. Can't be helped.

This is beginning to seem less like an Allied victory but don't Lord Admiral Sprior or Adm. Nimitz.

So I go to pick up the Mayan housekeeper from my sister-in-law's house and on the drive back we are talking is this kind of Spanish/Mayan/English creole. Oddly, she asks how old Stalker Girl is. Even more curiously, I answer. She answers, "Hay, doctor! Pense que era mas vieja." (Holy ****! I thought she was much older")

*********Bunker, New St. Andrew's, near New Edinburgh, March 21, 1942*********

Rear Admiral Lake surveys the damage after Kinugasa and 3 other cruiser bombard New Edinburgh on the night of March 20/21. An eight inch round has has torn into the beautiful white sand bunker, tossing the 10 inch diameter logs of the bunker wall about like toothpicks.

He begins to cry.

Yes. The beautiful 18th with the native pines and the dogleg and the awesome bunker is a mess. Of all the annoying colonial bastards you would think the Japs would be a bit more sensitive.

Even worse is the fact that the other 199 rounds hit the runway. Annoying, inscrutable, near-sighted, colonialist Little Yellow Bastards!

The good news is the breakout of the low-damage combatants worked. A few support ships in harbor were roughed up during the bombardment but nothing sunk. 10 aircraft were destroyed on the ground (including one previously damaged B-17).

The Jap carriers made a port attack on New Perth (La Foa) of all things. No USAAF fighters rose to defend which undoubtedly means the airfield is over 70% damage (the cut-off for fighter flight ops on a level 4 airfield).

I will have to fly off all serviceable aircraft and do the Murmansk convoy thing on the support ships still at Noumea.

Here are the opposing forces on the Gryme's New Dyke Line.

Assault value 742
8th Marine Regiment
161st Infantry Regiment
132nd Infantry Regiment
2nd Marine Regiment
193rd Tank Battalion
754th Tank Battalion
34th Infantry Regiment
2nd USMC Tank Battalion
147th Field Artillery Regiment
223rd Field Artillery Battalion
148th Field Artillery Battalion
I US Amphib Corps
810th Engineer Aviation Battalion
33rd Medium Regiment

Assault value 945
82nd Naval Guard Unit
4th Division
Maizuru 1st SNLF
61st Naval Guard Unit
8th Engineer Regiment
17th Infantry Regiment
8th Recon Regiment
144th Infantry Regiment
64th Naval Guard Unit
8th Mountain Gun Regiment

I suspect the Japs are a bit more fatigued and average prep about even.

I had to send VP-72 and the McGoo goofballs to Suva. Apparently, they didn't take kindly to the flight restrictions. Their group morale sank to 16, which is the lowest I have ever seen for a group of pilots.

Part of the problem is cousin Abraham and his side of the family are still stuck on Tanna with 6 disabled PBY's. I probably should just withdraw the group and send them home.
