Now see those two in front look like 3" rifles. The back two like 12lb napoleons. None of those is a howitzer.

Status: offline 		You are probably correct. As I don't have the brochure I'm just guessing since I am not a Civil War expert. I guessed howizer as it seemed a shorter barrel that didn't taper at the firing end.

You could very well be right. Here's a pic of a 12lb howitzer from a Georgia unit.

The iron gun in front is a 3" Ordnance Rifle, the bronze gun in back is a 12" howitzer.

As for the bronze rifled cannons, the Union did produce such weapons for field use, and some of the existing smoothbores were rebored and rifled to be able to use stocks of new rifled ammunition.

Status: offline 		This an enlarged version of the sign. This was part of the "Cotton Field" where this battery of four 3inch Ordinance Rifles and four 12pounder Howitzers helped stop Confederate attacks on the Round Forest and the Nashville Pike. The battery fired some 2,299 rounds sometimes with the enemy only 600 yards away. The Confederates lacked artillery support and the battle died down for the night.

edit: the image did not enlarge very well but I guess the point can be made, who know what guns are actually on display?

Those howitzers are death on infantry, for sure. One reason I think the Confederates were so good at defense was due to having lots of them. Of course, the Yanks countered with lots of 3" rifles to knock them out.

Status: offline 		The 2 biggest thing I remember about Stones River are the guns in the cotton field and then those Confederate guns and the limbers back in the woods and trying to get them through those thick woods.

Seems they started with six James Rifled 6 pounders and right before they headed south they exchanged four of the rifled guns for four smoothbore 6 pounders.

I had the SPI Strategy and Tactics editions on Wilsons creek and Pea Ridge. Got tossed out years ago as did War in the Pacific, Atlantic Wall, Highway to the Reich and a buch of other board games and S&T editions. When I see what they now fetch on EBay, I want to vomit.

I never knew or heard of the Shenandoah Valley or Stonewall Jackson and his "foot cavalry" till I got the S&T magazine in the mail and read about it.

I still have fond memories of the F-4 Phantom pilots from VMF-212 and VMF-235 who were based out at Kaneohe and game me the opportunity to sit in the front seat of a Phantom. All from the South. For a young kid that was a huge thrill.

Years from now those little boys and girls in Iraq and Afghanistan who are treated with kind thoughts and words from our servicemen and women will not forget.

Tell you what, though, one accurate shell landing in that crevasse would put a hurtin on anyone hunkered down in there. Looks like the Devil's Den in miniature.

Status: offline 		Maybe thats where the name "Slaughter Pen" came from.

In the end the Rebs did wheel up some arty as close as 200 yards. Still, attack after attack failed with heavy losses to both sides. Finally Sheridan had to abandon this position. His delaying action during the retreat allowed the Union troops time to dig in along the Nashville Pike. The next action was "The Cotton Field" which I have already shown.
