(1) What purpose is served by making a pilot in a group inactive? (2) What is gained by sending a pilot back to the states for 180 days? (3) Can we transfer a pilot from one squadron to another?

Sorry if this is in the manual, pilot management addendum, or forum . . .I can't find it.

I have other pilot questions that I'll hold.

Don't know about 1 and (I wonder too) but in case of 3 you can send a pilot to the group reserve and once there you can request him from another squadron. There are transfer delays involved so you might have to wait some days between each step.

OK, I guess "inactive" means available for transfer to another unit by being in the reserve pool (my initial assumption about "inactive" was that the pilot stayed with the original squadron but did not fly, and was not available for transfer; I thought this might be a tool by which one could micromanage who gets to go on missions or get training).

I just noticed that while one click makes a pilot inactive, a second click (i.e. clicking on a greyed out name)dissociates the pilot from his original squadron, at which point he is a generic bomber/fighter/or/Patrol pilot.

Still puzzling over the 180-day rotation.

1. If you have more pilots in a group than planes, you may decide to make some pilots 'inactive' to save them up for later or make available for a later transfer. Pilots so marked as still part of the group but don't fly unless are needed to man a plane. It can be used to rotate pilots if needed.
2. Rotating pilots back home can help preserve good pilots early in the game, or just preserve exceptional pilots. It just gives the player some control that they didn't have in stoc when pilots were automatically rotated out after so many missions.
3. No direct transfer from group A to group B. I honestly can't see why you would want to have a screen of 1000+ groups to pick from to send A pilot to - how would you know which one to pick unless you had already looked at it. I tend to find a group that needs some good pilots AND then go looking for pilots from the reserve. And the reverse applies too, looking at groups and seeing pilots I want to use elsewhere going to the reserve.

As with all these things, you don't have to use these features just because they are there. You can just let the pilots come and go as required without even using any of the above 3 options..

I'm more than happy with the current way to move pilots from one squadron to another (now that I understand it). My question was just to find out what the mechanism was for moving pilots. Pilot management is a great addition to a great expansion of a great game.
