Leaders do not have any impact on training (I thought this was true, but the testing linked below busted this myth).

(from Damian with test results: "I still stand by my data ... leaders and veterans make no difference... except veterans skew the data (as they make a higher average) & if there are advantages they are still too small to see or be bothered with")
http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2627236

Having veteran pilots in a squadron does not increase the speed at which experience is gained.

Somewhere that I cannot find the manual states something about EXP 80 pilots helping with training. No sure if it's true. I have noticed some groups training faster than others. I think there is a quicker training with a vet of high EXP in the group. No tests done, but it's what I'll keep doing, as so far training has been quick and easy.

TRACOM pilots do have to be above 80 EXP to get into it. But I can remember reading a piece about a veteran pilot (defined as EXP 80) being placed into a dedicated training group increasing the efficiency of the training. I've read those test threads, but I will have to do my own to make sure they are done with the methods I us to train. No time to do that now, but one day maybe. In the meantime, even if I put a vet in each group, it's not such a bad thing to save some very good pilots for later, and it can't hurt.

Hi, I'm new to WitPAE, enjoying it but quite a learning curve. I've spent many hours seaching for knowledge, tips, etc. in the forums, thanks everyone!
I'm still confused about pilot training terminology. When I click on an air group unit name I get to the unit detail screen (wish all screens had screen headers or names). This screen has three yellow options across the bottom: PILOTS, AIRCRAFT DATA, PLANES. I click on PILOTS to see a list of the air group's pilots. On this screen, at the bottom, the transfer options are "To pool:" Group, Reserve, or Active.

Those 3 options don't exactly match the conversations above which talk about Replacement, Reserve and Trainee as the pools.

Clarification please, thanks!

I never send pilots to Group Reserve or draw them from it. I have no idea what that is for but it doesn't matter since I never use it. Sometimes (at least US) carrier pilots are drawn from reserve squadrons and maybe that has something to do with it. I hated that by the way, I prefer to do every little thing manually. If you try to move a pilot from a squadron to "Active", guess what, he doesn't go anywhere, he's still right there. The important thing is there are two pools, the Reserve pool which carries unassigned air crews who have either completed training and are waiting for an active assignment, or crews who are waiting for a training slot to open for a skill they are not yet proficient at. The other pool is for the trained recruits, the crews who have completed one year of training and are awaiting assignment to any squadron, whether it be a training squadron to bring them into viable category for activation, or an active squadron. I frequently send trained recruits directly into transport squadrons, both active and training. If you are IJN (not IJA) or British you will normally find this pool completely empty. Deal with it.

Group - Rarely used by some. Never by me. In time the squadron pilot rosters are filled to their maximum with experienced, well trained pilots, while the global reserve is very well stocked, so the Group Reserve function ends up becoming redundant.

Reserve - Very important, but how well filled with quality pilots the Reserve pool becomes will depend largely on you, and how well you organize your own dedicated training groups (fighter, level bomber, attack bomber, patrol, recon, etc.). Eventually, when front line air squads start running short of pilots through attrition, you would manually select veteran pilots from the Reserve, sort the list by desired skill (Air, Grnd, Rec, etc.), then select the most trained pilots via the buttons on the bottom (Select 1, 5, 10 pilots). Doing this will ensure the squadron will get the most experienced/well trained replacement pilots who are immediately available.

Again, you'll have to organize and manage your own dedicated training groups, and transfer pilots to the general reserve once sufficiently trained. How well trained they become before "graduation" is up to you. Usually, for example, I try to keep a whole fighter or bomber group (three or four squadrons) training until the least-qualified pilot in the entire group has a specific training value of at least 60, not including the squadron commander. Then I switch them all to train on a secondary skill - low-level ground attack for fighters and some 2-engined bombers, low level naval attack for other 2-engined bombers [potentially as a third skill for all 2-E bombers if time allows]. 4-engined trained pilots go straight to the reserve pool once sufficiently trained in level bombing, etc. How you do things is totally up to you, though.

Then you have all that to do again with naval air groups, particularly with carrier units.

Note that with some nations this will be more difficult to do than others. For example, the U.S., Australia, and Canada have abundant stocks of educated candidates for pilot training, while other nations like the Soviet Union and, especially, China will have a hard time finding suitable people. In particular, getting sufficiently combat-experienced Chinese pilots to put in TRACOM will be a priority. Ten at a time works best.

Active - Simple function. If you have a number of pilots in a squadron that are in the group reserve (greyed out pilots) with an activation time of one day, and you want to make them active with just one button click.

Sorry if this was a bit of a long-winded answer, but pilot training is a big deal WitP and I've only scratched the surface! You'll be spending a lot of time with this aspect, for as long as your campaign goes on.

Holy-moly, but can't really say it is a necro because that one is a very useful thread. Now to your question

On this screen, at the bottom, the transfer options are "To pool:" Group, Reserve, or Active.

Active = pilot is set ready to fly missions in this airgroup
Reserve = pilot is sent away into general Reserve pool, removed from the airgroup, and is accessible from "Request veteran" button and picking "Reserve" pool there.
Group = pilot is left in the airgroup roster but does not fly, is marked as ready for transfer, and is accessible from "Request veteran" button and picking "Group=>..." pool there

You're welcome.

You may already be aware of this, but I forgot to mention that after graduating and transferring your training group pilots to the reserve, replace them with "Any", "Automatic", and "Replacement(n)" set in the air squadron window. Then simply fill up the roster with new students by clicking the "Get n Pilots" button until that section is greyed out.

Okay...are there really players that want and enjoy this kind of micromanagement?

Yes: me. And I suspect many many more

The pilot management thing is a great improvement in my opinion. On thing is certain: I do like it

I'm on board with this. Maybe when AE II comes out there will be an auto manage button for those who find
it tedious but please don't take it away!
(my reference to AE II is just an example of my positive thinking)

When I look at my Pilot List: Green numbers are experienced gained in the last month but what does the "Orange" signify?

Green is last turn.  Orange is this month excluding last turn.

Merciful necro-thread! Three posts above includes the quote of a comment I posted in 2010!
