2 issues (both naval related). First off (and not backed up by documentation) a PT squadron is sighted 1 hex east of Darwin as 1 TF unloads and 2 SCTFs stand guard with 6 hex react. The next turn the PTs come in and the SCTFs fail to engage them before they hit the transport group. I find this hard to swallow but I can live with it I guess.

2nd is the Yamashiro. She is in the transport group. The invasion starts in the last naval action phase of Jan 07. Coastal defense returned fire on the support ships missing an xAKL and probably hitting several PBs but the detailed combat result shows no shots at Yamashiro although 10 hits are reported (she sustained no damage from this engagement). Here is the result of that:

First she supports followup landing. 6" coastal guns fire (but not at her) yet 6 "hits" are recorded on her. Note, no mention of fires:

I can see the PT's sneaking in. 1600 sq. miles is a big area to cover 24 hrs a day and even a lot of surface ships can be evaded by those fast and pesky boats.

Not sure what to make of the Yamashiro. Are you playing the Japanese? Perhaps it is just good, old fashioned and confusing FOW in the reports?

Yes I am Japan. It's an e-mail game. Like I said, I can live with the PTs getting through. This isn't the first time I've had a BB sink with little to no damage so I suspect it's a bug somewhere.

I could believe that it was a catastrophic accident that occurred (fire, collision, dropped cigarette, etc) but if that is the case then it should have a message associated with it.

You might consider zipping and posting the last few saves so a dev can take a look when they have a chance. I am sure that everyone would like to see something like this get fixed and/or explained.

Good luck.

Usually I find these messages in the Operations Report - not in the combat report. I would check there.

Hmmm... Interesting outcome, so far. I agree... the BB Yamashiro sinking due to light dmg...

I'd like to learn more about this too... I've not ran into this and remain curious (...meow! *gulp!*).

Keep 'em afloat and steamin' !!

you are probably right about accidents onboard ships but if a collision happens during combat it seems to have shown up in my combat reports.

On one occasion one of my ACM's struck a friendly mine at one of my ports and sank. I'll have to dig around to see if that was in the operations report or not.

Ship collision would not cause it to go to "heavy fire" from no damage at all. I suspect there is a bug in there somewhere which is why I zipped it and posted it here. If memory serves every other game I have lost a BB to mysterious causes it was in a similar situation (ie support in a transport TF and attacked by PTs). Now granted Mutsu blew up with no apparent cause in the real war but my understanding is there are no such occurrences in the game so I would like someone to have a look see to make sure everything is working as it should.

I suspect that the heavy fires are the culprit here. From your combat report the 6 inchers from the CD guns might have all hit the superstructure/upperworks and started some fires which got out of control and maybe caused her to be scuttled while the crew evacuated.

Thats complete supposition on my part however, it could equally be a bug.

This would be my guess also.
99+ fires makes it a done deal.

No doubt that's the problem, that isn't the issue. The issue is that it went from no fire at all to heavy fires to sunk without 1 hit being scored on it. The last hit result was:

BB Yamashiro, Shell hits 6 <( note: no fires of any kind and the "hits" were caused by weapons that could not have damaged the ship )>

After the above the TF was attacked by PTs and that's when it suddenly had "heavy fires" even though it wasn't even shot at much less hit.

I don't know exactly what is going on here, but a few points:

1. All "ship" combat is one-on-one. The text displays the unit (ship or CD gun) that initiates the combat, but the other unit also fires.
2. Check your ops reports - may be more data there.
3. Fires could indeed be started and randoms are used in both fire fighting and chance of fires getting worse. Literally anything can happen.
4. PTs do indeed have a chance of slipping by covering TFs and getting to the transports. Especially at night. They try to do just that.

Nothing here seems out of bounds. Not all the lucky, but entirely probably.

As I tried to explain in my previous post, engagements are always between two units. Only one line in the combat report is listed for the "duel" between these two units. The unit that initiates combat is listed as firing at the second unit, but the second unit also fires back.

Right. Now like I said in a prior post:

The issue is that it went from no fire at all to heavy fires to sunk without 1 hit being scored on it or any ship/CDU even shooting at it in the case of heavy fire. The last hit result was:

After the above the TF was attacked by PTs and that's when it suddenly had "heavy fires" even though it wasn't even shot at much less hit. Now rather than speculating on why it happened, why not look at the zip I sent and find out for sure why it happened. Sure would save a lot of back and forth would it not? And then we would KNOW why as well and you can say "WAD" or "oops bug".

Right. Now like I said in a prior post:

The issue is that it went from no fire at all to heavy fires to sunk without 1 hit being scored on it or any ship/CDU even shooting at it in the case of heavy fire. The last hit result was:

BB Yamashiro, Shell hits 6 <( note: no fires of any kind and the "hits" were caused by weapons that could not have damaged the ship )>

After the above the TF was attacked by PTs and that's when it suddenly had "heavy fires" even though it wasn't even shot at much less hit. Now rather than speculating on why it happened, why not look at the zip I sent and find out for sure why it happened. Sure would save a lot of back and forth would it not? And then we would KNOW why as well and you can say "WAD" or "oops bug".

Right. Anything could have happened. Check your combat events file. If that doesn't show anything, Who Cares.

I do believe it is working just fine. Something happened to Yamashiro - one of a large number of possible things. You just can't find it.

Was Darwin mined? Sometimes mine hits are tough to ferret out. Since the damage occured close in while unloading the amphibious TF, I wonder if the bigger ships strayed into a minefield.

Just a thought.

In stock scenarios, Darwin is definitely mined - and this was my first thought anyway. Others have mentioned having ships mined without seeing messages - so I would rate this as a likely culprit.

This save (http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2381848#) is from version 1084e and is for 8 Dec41.

Might I suggest you try the latest patch with the original save for 8 Jan 42.

on page 241 of manual: 14.2.1.3 Catastrophic Events. "During any repair, there is a 0.01% to 0.0125% chance of a catastrophic event ie destruction of the ship."
and page 133: 6.5.1 Operational Damage and Repairs at Sea. "In addition, ships always attempt to repair fire, flooding, and system damage, even when at sea."
So if these two rules combined then they could be the cause of your sunk BB. Catching on fire after the 6in hits, then rolling the low percentages while repairing at sea, and then BOOM. The rules don't state how much damage a ship has to become a victum, but I guess even a level one fire would still qualify.

also you can look at the sunk ship screen of the information page and it should tell you sunk by. If ship hit a mine then it would be listed instead of 6in.

Did not catch fire though from the 6" hits. I did what Michael said to do and that worked. I was surprised so many devs said "maybe this or maybe that" rather than loading the save and seeing for sure what happened (like they should have IMHO). I've worked as a programmer for years and I know it just isn't that hard to put a few "print" commands in the code to track a potential problem to see what the current value of a given variable is. I also know that admitting there "might be a bug" is about number 10 on a programmers list of possible causes (user error being number 1 and hardware being pretty high as well).

Did you check the Intelligence report on "Ships Sunk"? It will tell you what weapon caused the majority of the damage to the ship.
