Just happened to create a new ship for SOTS. The top look of this ships is also good for DW.

I really pushing for one of you people to do a BSG, Star Trek, or Babylon 5 mod...

The problem is everybody is thinking the same as you.

I'm not! I'm pushing for a BattleTech universe-based mod! Mainly because I'm kinda fed up with sci-fi universes that has an abundance of different alien species. BattleTech or possibly Dune!

Hadberz, I have a question for you about the image above. The black colour around the outside of the ship, doesn't that need to be transparent and if it does do you know how to make so?

Thanks

Hmm. A BattleTech mod; now there's an interesting idea.

I think I'd go with the pre-Star League era, as that would allow for at least 10 factions (the 6 great Houses, plus the 4 major Periphery powers). It would also be more appropriate in terms of "realism", as the later eras didn't really have much in the way of navies (aside from the mostly-unarmed Jumpships needed to ferry troops).

At the moment the game will also accept Windows Bitmaps with black backgrounds. But this is legacy support for some older images (how can it be legacy if the game's not released? ). In the future support for this will likely be dropped. So do NOT use this feature - instead use transparent PNGs as outlined in the customization guide.

They are actually png files and are transparent, but I had to convert them to jpeg to load on the forum. The conversion process turned the background black.

I've used both Gimp and Paint.net, In Paint.net use magic wand tool to select the ship outline and then paste to the transparent layer. Then save as a png file.

Didn't you find the egdes of the ships were very jagged by doing this?

My sources are google and efni.org. I used only Photoshop for the transformation of pictures and the creation of engines (pure blue lines). I believe each player can make ships from popular sci-fi universes:)

The pool of potential mods.

- Babylon 5 (needs fighters, jump gates, advanced diplomacy - common projects several races like the station Babylon 5)
- Star Wars (needs fighters, a small variety of ground forces)
- Star Trek (ST will do for modding)
- BSG (needs fighters, the technologies of robotization)
- Dune (needs factions within the empires)
- Emperor of the Fading Suns (needs factions within the empire + analog of the Galactic Senate)
- Stargate (needs fighters, jump gates)
- The Honorverse (needs very long range weapons)

Here is what they look like in game. I've not noticed any jagged edges.

Hadberz, that is just plain awesome.

My question is... how does the game know where to put the engine contrails! Is this an automatic thing?

Covered in the modding guide matey.

I think you put a solid blue line (0,0,255) where you want the contrails to appear when creating the image file, and the game works it's magic. :)

Another mod I'd like to see is a mod based off the Buck Rogers XXVC universe created by TSR(The same people who made the original Dungeons & Dragons!)

That wouldn't fit very well with Distant Worlds I guess though, since it was focused on Sol only, no colonization of other systems iirc, it was fairly 'HARD sci-fi'(As in minimal exotic non-empirical technology, no FTL travel if I recall correctly.)
