I'm trying to get some of my Fighter groups on both my british and American Carriers to resize to fit the ship. Is this just downsize if they are too big, or will they expand on there own. I seem to remember it telling me when they can expand, but that info seems to be gone. I'm guessing this was changed at some point. Anyone know how it now works off the top of their head. Any help is much appreciated.

If there is no resize date for the unit, move them onto a CV and then disband the CV in a port. Next turn the size of the unit should be changed.

hmmmm...ok. I'm pretty sure they have been disbanded for quite awhile. Did they take away the ability for VF groups to expand beyond 27? Cause I no longer see a date on the resize toggle at all.

ok...wow this is just kind of dumb. I removed all other groups except the fighter squadron on Hornet and put it into port at San Francisco and it expanded to 81! What happened to the option to select the size?

If you want to reduce the size of it add another squadron to the CV and disband it again. I believe that should work. As far as picking the size, I have never seen that option.

This thread is a bit older but I have the same problem and don't want to post a new thread.
Saratoga comes with 60 out of 90 possible planes. Other carriers are understrength too. I set the fighter squadron to resize to fit ship but nothing happens, although the TF is in port. Haven't tried disbanding but it obviously didn't work for karmannkc.

So how do you fill up the carriers without basing additional squadrons on the ship?

Are you in a large enough Port? Mine resigned fine in San Diego, I'll check the manual and come back, but i believe you need a large enough port for it to happen.

I tried both in Sidney and Pearl, but only waited one turn. Couldn't wait longer since my carriers are desperately needed to cover the 4th australian divisions landing at Milne Bay before Japan grabs it.

The problem is, the DEI is mostly in japanes hands now which means all those japanese carriers there now will probably head towards the Solomons and PM soon. Would be really nice to have my carriers filled to capacity when I meet the KB there.

I think you need relacements to fill out your 4 squads. There just isn't enough planes in early '42

I´ve got enough aircraft, have had the carriers in a level 9 port for weeks but nothing happens. My 90 capacity US carriers move around as a sort of fat Soryu class...

What date is it? Because I think the old WitP "aircraft load of fleet carriers" rules are still valid on both sides.

For US carriers that is:

EARLY 42
VF 27 F4F-3
VS 18 SBD
VB 18 SBD
VT 15 TBD

LATE 42
VF 36 F4F-4
VS 18 SBD
VB 18 SBD
VT 15 TBF

1943
VF 36 F6F
VB 36 SBD
VT 18 TBF

There is no option to select a size.
If re-size is allowed, it will attempt to fit the group on the CV based on some basic air group mix formulas. Having no other groups or types on-board has given it Carte Blanche to try to maximize the size.

Probably would have been the easiest option to let players go wild.

I think it sounds more like a case of replacements allowed than a re-size issue.

I had my TBD squadron resized early on (downsized IIRC) but that was it, no other squadron has resized and AFAIK it´s not time related in AE. One of my British carriers moves around with 9 !! Wildcats (Canadian ones ) and a dozen Albacores (Britsh ones) bringing it´s total to just over 20 aircraft. Now British CVs have a very small aircraft capacity anyway but if they then move around with only 2/3 of their ac capacity makes them totally useless. IIRC it´s Illustrious.

Hmmm, anyone else an idea? Maybe the devs? I moved a Marine fighter unit to Hornet but I'd much rather have the units resize instead.

Castor, Sorry I should have been more clear. I was responding to Speedy Gonzales who I think has a replacement rather than resize problem. Not enough planes, Which is not your problem

How many planes do you have in your relacement pool?

I can't check right now but I am pretty sure the number is around zero.

I understand that my carrier squadrons can't get planes where there are no planes. But the problem is not the planes but the squadron size. The squadrons ac stays the same although there is plenty of room to expand. For example: Lets say I set a squadron with an ac of 20 and 20 planes to fit to the carrier. There is room for 10 planes so I would expect the ac to jump to 30. The squadron would then be understrength with only 2/3rds of the planes available. Over time the squadron would then receive additional planes and assuming I don't put them into harms way too much eventually reach 30. But somehow it doesn't work this way.

I just wish it went back to the old time schuduel it was easier than manualy trying to configure the VF squads.

Unless it has changed from WITP to AE and I don't think it has, Puhis has got it right in post 11 above, resize won't work for the USN until late 42 for the VF's resize to 36 and March 1, 1943 for the VB's to 36 after the VS's are withdrawn The VT's can go to 18 earlier but there usually isn't enough planes to fill them out until the TBF's arrive

So the only way to use the carriers full potential is to add squadrons to a CV. I guess this is kind of historical. AFAIK Marine fighter squadron were sometimes based on carriers. It would have been nice though to find this piece of info somewhere, the manual for instance.

I am kind of surprised though that this topic is so difficult to answer. Surely others must have noticed that their carriers are low on aircraft and asked themselves, how do I get the full potential out of my flattops?

Twas always thus'
Putting extra squadrons on early allows greatter flexibility. Extra fighters works if you need one on cap and one on LRCap. Extra DB's if your going out looking for a fight or TBF's when available. Carrier capable can also become carrier trained, cutting down operational accidents. There is another resize in 1945 IIRC when VBF activate.
