Spent Sunday on the Yorktown. She is a bit worn but has some great exhibits and models on board. Here are a few.

Um... I think this is a Hellcat. F6F-3 to be exact. Nicely restored.

My father was on the Yorktown, CVS-10 in the late 1950's. One of the crew bunks still has the initials he carved into it present. Very cool to see. Dad once told me he couldnt wait to get off the ship after four years of service but every year he goes back to see her.

Funny how attached you can become to a machine.  My father loved his B-29 because it always brought him back safely to Tinian, though he hated the war.  Later when the B-29 was obsolete and no longer had any use many were used as targets on the artillery range and that upset him.  He has a model of one in his den and the last time one (Fifi?) was in his area the 2 of us went for a visit.

Enjoy it while you can, word's going around that the Navy is telling Patriots Point to either fix her or sink/scrap her due to hull problems. They barely came up with the money to fix the Laffey (which still hasn't been returned despite the repairs being finished) and I don't see how their going to find the money for the Yorktown. In addition, the outer hull of the sub Clamagore doesn't look to good either and I sware every time I've been there it looks like she has a slight list to starboard.

I don't know why they just dont fill in and land lock all the vessels.

I was down there in October and spoke with several of the volunteers on Yorktown.  They all felt that the fundraising plan to restore the ship would succeed, either by corporate donations or the state providing some money.  Several plans are being considered, from drydocking to building a freshwater pool around the hull, to encasing her in cement.  We walked through the hangar deck and viewed the planes, but didn't see all those ship models.  Where were those?  I would have spent an hour or more just looking (and drooling) at them.

They have a number of self guided tours that take you down through officers country, the brig, sick bay etc. Along the way they have different rooms for BBs CVs and CAs with movies and other displays. Unfortunately some of my pictures did not come oput due to lighting and my own ineptitude with the camera.

Will post a few more when I get a chance.
