I have documented the special handling that has been built into the AE code "over the years" to handle various plane image changes and displaying of the unit patches.

1. Plane art can change depending on game month/year.
2. Unit patches can be added to ships, groups and LCUs, which will show on the unit screen when viewed.

When we get around to patch 4, it can be included (with any updates by then) in the Manual sub-directory.

Please note this has been tested but funny or misaligned art can cause game issues (CTD).
If you have an issue after installing some art, try removing the images to see if the problem goes away.

I hope you find this helpful for adding just that more chrome to this game!

This is great Michael. This will be a boon to folks down the road and really adds depth and immersion to the game. Much appreciated!

How do I turn "hex-side details" to the "ON" position without the ugly blue hex-sides over open ocean? :(

These are some pretty cool features!

Couple of technical questions...

I grabbed this png off of the wiki for the 24th ID and resized it in photoshop before saving it out as a bmp file. Photoshop gives me the option to save it in 16,24, & 32 bit. The only difference I could tell between 24 and 32 bit was the file size. Would it be in our best interest to save it under the lower setting to conserve on video memory used?

Also I was working on a mod and added a bunch of air art to the default stock images. With this new system would it be possible to use the individual aircraft images as long as they're mapped to the correct editor slot?

Also if anyone wants this here it is:

I'd be more than happy to host any mods like this on my website.

Here's some art for the USAAF in the WWII and immediate post WWII period here

Yes you can create individual plane image files based on the editor slots of the scenario files.
These image then will replace the default ones.

Here's what I've got so far. It's a long way from being comprehensive, mostly Indian and Brit LCU/squadrons and a few ships and USAAF units. It's not easy to find unit emblems for the Commonwealth LCUs once you get beyond divisional level

Still got a few minor things to work out, some of the RAF crests aren't quite right for example.

Go to the main ART directory in the AE game folder.

Add two new folders.
AlliedPatch
JapPatch

Then transfer the unit patches to whichever folder.
All Allied to one.
All the Japanese to the other.

That's it, the game takes over from there.

DL the attachment Michael has in his first post on this thread.

It has all the info.

The inportant thing is the bitmap size for patches.
It's 70x70 pixels.
Dixie has a blank one with his download.

Does anyone know a good source for RN ship crests ? I've found a couple of sites that have a small gallery, but I can't even find all the CV/BB crests. I'll post the ones I have done here later tonight.

'fraid not. I've got a few, strangely the sub crests are easier to find than the carriers...

If anyone is doing the RAN crests then the Aussie navy's website has modern crests for pretty much all their ships, with a bit of work they can be modded back to WW2 versions.

Got some decent ones from here

http://www.flagsandcrests.net/hms2.html

Mostly round crests, the RN crests had several different shapes during the war as well

Here is my work up till now, not too much yet.

It contains 4 out of 6 RN CV's (missing Formidable and Indomitable)
9 out of 15 RN BB/BC (Missing Howe, King George V, Anson, Revenge, Ramillies, Royal Sovereign)
The CVE Hermes

Feel free to point me to any of the missing crests.

Edit: File deleted, I'm going to include the crests posted by Dixie first

It only has to end up 70x70, so it's good enough. This is the result in gif. so it has to be converted back to .bmp for it to work in the game.

Edit; I must bow to your research and/or google skills, thanks for the images
