You're definately right about HOI versus SC2. I've played both, and HOI is definately deeper and more rewarding, but on the other hand its not a major undertaking to play a SC2 turn, so I quite like its ease and playability. Just what you need after a FITE turn.

I really don't understand one thing. If you have disappointed in the game and you found another, why you proclaim this from the housetop? It would be better everyone to say a goodbye and that's all. Or don't say anything. The last 10-15 posts are trollworks and off-topic.

Is it either pollyanna or trollworks?. I regret feeling the way I do; compelled to express my feelings of frustration with this game and relief over having found another. My apologies. But I'm not happy with the direction toaw has gone, if in fact it has gone anywhere.

If you would have finished with toaw you would not post this messages ;-)

TOAW is giving you what you won't get by several games combined. Do not blame it for what it is not to be ment. Fite is one game alone, where do you ever found something like this? Piero, Europe Aflame and over dozents of others szenarios. TOAW is great, and I never found something like it.

So Ralph go on forward, for what TOAW is ment to be!

Ditto, Pio.....

I wondered about that too,,,,

The Operational Art of War, oddly, seems to be a land-based, theatre (and below) system, IIRC. Does that pretty good.

And, the Beta marches on!

It's nice to know that relevant whislist items are being included in the patch:

You'd like it if you tried it. It's a blast against the computer.

I'm trying very, very hard to not work on the code so that it can be packaged and released.

If I'm playing with very minor UI things that I can test and that aren't likely to break anything, I won't be tempted to
make other changes.

Ralph's right. What we need now more than anything is a new patch.

Personally, I wasn't even aware he did that one. Must have slipped it under the radar. But anyone should see the advantage:

More platforms = More customers = More money = More updates. Good for everyone.

I've tried to lower the learning curve. This works especially well with a touch screen if you're doing basic play. It works through an iPad, but the remote desktop software adds in an extra layer of complexity, although it DOES allow you to very quickly zoom in. I can now see a couple of people on a couch passing an iPad back and forth, playing Waterloo, Arracourt, or some other game with a small map. I can also play games Solo against Elmer and expect a better fight. I can also allow Elmer to move some of the units for me with me giving broad direction, so I can play larger scenarios, I'm playing Red Thunder 1988 as the Russians right now using my iPad. I suspect that if Matrix puts a touch screen running TOAW up at the next board games conference, it's got the potential to sell quite a few copies.

With TOAW 3.4, I've tried to let you swallow the elephant one bite at a time. One mode allows you to just drag the counters around the screen, and they do the 'right' thing, they either move or attack. You can then bring up the combat planner and walk through the combats and add artillery if needed, and fine tune your attacks. You can ignore the air game, and 'Elmer' will do a reasonable job of handling it. The 'ToolTips' add in information about how the terrain will effect your units. Supply now 'makes sense.' It decreases similar to the way that trucks traveling over the terrain would, instead of the arcane step rules of the original.

I hope I've lessened the learning curve to where you could teach TOAW to a 10 year old without them getting tangled up in the details like I did when I started, I tried to learn the entire manual before playing, which took a lot of the fun out of the game.

Of course, the veteran players can ignore all the new features, and play without tooltips, with right click popping up a menu, etc. If you're playing a PBEM game against another human, that interface makes more sense since you need more control.

Ralph,

At least you made the iPad actual useful for once! (you can tell I'm not a big fan of Apple )

But in all seriousness that is pretty awesome. I've been pretty disappointed with games on my Motorola Droid and the iPhone for that matter. I know the iPad is more powerful/bigger but I never thought people would be able to convert complex hex wargames to it!

I'm not a fan boy either, it's my first Apple product since the Apple II. They wanted $1000 to develop on a Mac, and I could develop on a PC for $100 (not that I hold a grudge, or that they're doing the same thing for iPod development or anything.

Just so everyone know, this isn't TOAW running on an iPad, it's using some remote desktop software on the iPad to connect to a Windows laptop running TOAW. I've done some work to make sure that TOAW works reasonably well with a touch interface. Developing this on the iPad would take at least $1000 for tools, and 6-12+ months for a simple port, and that work would be specific to the iPad. I'd be able to sell maybe 100 copies at $10 apiece, if I'm lucky. There are some tools coming out that may reduce the development time, and I'll look at it again once they're out.

I DO hope that other people take a look at how it plays on the iPad through remote desktop. I think that you actually could port a complex wargame to the iPad/Android/Windows 7. The biggest advantage that the iPad has is the larger screen. If you tried playing on an iPod, I suspect that the scrolling would be intolerable.

Ralph

Yea that will happen only when people stop coming into my room in college and seeing me play wargames and asking "Is that Risk?"

That's how we roll, though. Always been niche, always will be niche.

That reminds me of the time I stopped in the student union on the U of A campus to get a coke outta the machine one time and came across a group of guys sitting around a huge table with a map in the center and some cardboard pieces on the map at various positions and they were saying to each other things like:
"I'm attacking the troll with my sword, plus 2, and my mace, plus 4, with a handicap of plus 5."
"I rolled a 6...that means the troll wins, again."
"Blast my bad luck" [edited to fit in with a mixed audience]
"Here's a get outta jail card, move me to the cave entrance somebody."

I thought it was dungeons and dragons but I could be wrong.

Things go in waves. For a while (way back when) wargames (Steel Panthers, Panzer General, TOAW, others) were king on the PC. Before that it was RPGs (Wizardry), Before that, it was adventure games (Zork, etc.) I'm not saying we won't always be a niche, but we can definitely be a bigger niche.

I love Baghdad Bob!

As a new player I've been holding off on TOAW3 for a bit until this new patch comes out so I don't have to relearn anything. Glad to see it looks pretty close though.
