I also tried a game using an old start, but everyone is so close together in that one that there is no time to develop political relations with anyone. All your neighbors covet your planets (huge negative relations mod), so things soon devolve into war and ruin and not an ally to be had anywhere.

This issue should be improved, otherwise starting with an old start doesnt seem too interesting.

Something else I really like about DW - I've been playing with 12 races in a 1400 star system for 4 hours and not come across a single AI race yet!!

Now I realise for some that would be a boring game, but for me it's meant I can plan where I want to colonise and slowly build up my defensive and offensive abilities, without having X or Y race suddenly turn up asking for stuff which I have to balance against the risk of them declaring war, etc. It's been really nice to spend the evening planning and building, knowing that conflict will come, but having the chance to put my stamp on my empire first :)
