Expansion slider set to "Starting"

...and I get 47 colonies in 34 systems? Seems a bit... high. Can't I just start with 1 colony? Is it this random for the AI? Doesn't this create a huge advantage/disadvantage?

I sounds like you might have had some other starting options enabled.

Edit - FACEPALM
Whoops! Yeah, I, uh... messed that one up! Expansion was set to "Random", as I figured the default would be "Starting"

Haha yeah, we always expect everything at the far Left to be "the worst setting" :)
That random totally threw me off too

Can you get starting in today's level somehow? One crappy space station (in galaxy warfare terms :D), few shuttles that can hardly travel to nearest star system yet etc.

With "starting" empire setting I knew nearby systems, had mining bases there and had tons of ships. I want less! I always started Moo2 with pre-warp era or whatever it was called as... I like to start really small and then expand!

So do I. Maybe the developers can add that setting in an update.

Maybe the starting amount of exploration and assets is to match the starting level of technology. Indeed, they could have made an even lower advanced starting option; like maybe one base at home planet and a scout ship.
I think the developers maybe intended to lesson the amount of slow starts that involved alot uneventful waiting for time to pass.

Yeah, I can well understand why didn't they add stone age option for some folk such as me :) I love the starting settings greatly otherwise. I really like to make variation to the other races etc.

I'm a huge fan of "Stone Age" starts. Just a planet and a scoutship. I don't have the game yet, but what is the smallest start you can have? 5 colonies? 3?

'smallest' I got so far was 1 colony with rather big seeming starbase, 3 mining bases in homeworld, some 2 or 3 star systems nearby with mining bases (didn't check how many mining bases were in those star systems), pile of escort ships, transports, freighters, construction ships etc and several nearby systems explored :) Its not that bad, but I'd prefer smallest start to literally mean you've just learned ftl drive, if even that, and you've only just recently surveyd your homesystem for resources and are ready to build couple of mining bases there.

That's about as small as it gets - typically one planet and a few mining bases, just to give you enough of a starting resource network that you can support yourself.

So that you can probably support yourself. Just be careful, you aren't guaranteed to get all the resources you need (I discovered, after my ships were 90/80% complete that I couldn't build their shield generators, grrrr)

Was this with the Zenox or another race?

Zenox sounds right -- the special shield they have takes a lot of rare resources, and you don't have them at the start despite all ship designs defaulting to their use.
