Someone mentioend this game in another thread. They said it had a cult following.

Anyone played it?

If so whats it like?

Its realtime I believe so is it manageable or a chaotic click fest.

I consider myself part of that cult, so you have to take what I'm saying with a grain of salt

7.62 is  a tactical squad game where you can control up to 6 mercs. It uses the SPM(Smart Pause Mode) system intead of turn-based, which means that instead of turns everything is calculated in time. Raising your gun takes some time, aiming some more, then pressing the trigger takes about 0.05 seconds. If you have a pistol it takes around 0.15 seconds to raise, AR's take around 0.40 and sniper rifles more than 0.50, then add the cost of aiming type and it the rifle uses a scope which adds a little more. The various weapons have different settings, some are quicker to draw and shoot, others have higher accuracy. The weapon system is the strongest part of the game, it calculates bullet weight, type and a bunch of other stuff to get weapon accuracy and damage.

If you're concerned with a click-fest there are several shortcut keys that minimizes that, like the alt+left click to shoot at an enemy until he's dead.

Some people doesn't like the way the camera works, but it only take an hour or so to get used to it, and once  again, there are shortcut keys that makes it work better.

The game has some flaws though, it suffers from a memory leak that makes the game lag after an hour or two of playing. But if you save your game, exits to the desktop and then start again it works well, at least for an hour or two. Some might be put off by this, but the games tactical environment and awesome fighting makes it well worth it.

If you decide to try it out check the 1C forum to get the latest unofficial patch. There are some advice there to get the game running better and some other resources that might interest you.

And the "cult" you mentioned hangs out at Strategy First's Brigade E5 forum, that's the first SPM game made by the same developers, Aperion.

Have fun and don't forget to save often

Most other traditional games of this genre follow the pattern where everone starts off with a pistol, graduating to a shot gun, then SMG, and finally its big ticket assault rifles. In other later games pistols are throw aways... of no use. 7.62 is different in that repsect. You could have a beauty M16 with reflex site, laser, but if you come within 5 yards of an unexpected enemy with 9mm pistol... groan....the ready time for a 9mm barreta snap shoot is 0.22 sec, but for your rifle its 0.67 sec. Your opponent fires first. If your vest doesn't negate the shock effect (which adds to your time delay) or if he doesn't score a critical head or body shot you might be able to get a shot off before his next one comes.

I find myself constantly checking weapon stats. And there are about 150 different combinations of weapons. The game play reminds me alot of fallout 2 in that you travel a strategic fogged out map looking for towns and key points while performing missions of assassination and Fed Ex delivery guy to advance the story. The AI in the random combat phases is much improved over E5 and these guys will out flank or sucker you into an ambush.

Some people might not like having to pause about every 2 seconds to change orders. I am constantly hitting the space bar and cancelling or redirecting facings, aims, rate of fire, stance. Your mercs don't automatically do any firing its all player controlled. Reminds me of a slow motion fire fight where everything is disected into fractional seconds. You can save the game anywhere on the fly just about. Which is good because it does drop out to desk after a couple hours. And thats the fly in the ointment right there. The game will never be mainstream but is alive.

I picked this up on a whim last weekend when Gamersgate had it on sale...from what I'm reading here, I'm glad that I did.

Sounds interesting. Without seeing it, I think it might make a great Wild West shootout game.

I've always thought a Wild West themed tactical shooter like this or Jagged Alliance would probably do fairly well.

I got the game....I've installed the blue moon mod but I'm not sure I should have done it as there is no tutorial now. Also not keen that the camera doesn't aut follow the character your in control of....camera is very awkward...

Looks good so far...

Also noticed Alfa Antiterror is on gamersgate.....this had loads of promise being wego....supposed to have amassive learning curve...or just be impossible to play...shame...

eventually you loose the background screens for the menus. The fix for this is to set the BMP folder to read only.
definitely install the unofficial patch, it fixes alot of problems.
