Well, I got this a week ago.

Read every forum message
Watched all the U-tube videos
I'm in my third game
Designed some ships and even got the program to build them ....... almost....
I have played every 4x space game since Reach for the Stars on my Amiga but this game is almost too much.

I noticed that my construction yards can only build certain military ships. Unfortunately they are not the ships I designed (mostly). I even turned off auto everything, made every design that I could not delete obsolete and they are still in that list! Planet bases don't seem to build military ships and I also noticed most of the construction yards are stuck on auto and will not change.

To make my life easier I loaded up the galaxy backdrops in paint.net and converted them to just black! Not very pretty but allot clearer and the gamer runs faster.

Viewing ships is inadequate for planning. If I pause and click in the right places I can find out some vital info but there is no reason why a ship should not show its
1) Range area (out of gas lol)
2) Weapon arc and range. Each weapon a different shade or whatever
3) A little more info on the rt click like various modes of attacking another ship
4) Speaking of rt click ctl, the close up (or snap to the ship) is way off at the highest magnification

More then 100 stars? Get real.
Just for kicks I quick loaded the one where you are a powerful empire surrounded by little ones. I set everything to auto and shut off all the messages except attack. It was like watching an anthill fighting 2 others. Even when I setup like this on a small map with just show me attacks and new built ships I was interrupted like every other second jumping around the cosmos!

Well don't get me wrong, I seem to love this game. Whether I'm ever going to be good at it is another matter.

I agree why we need more than 100 stars lol. But some people love this stuff so why ruin it for them. We are not forced to play them. As to making your ships yourself, what size are they? At the begining of the game, you can only make a ship that is size 200 or less. If the size is more than this, you can't build it. Until you research better construction yards you can only build size 200 and less.

I also agree, we need better documenation with the game as well.

Curious, did you go to the AAR section? There is a stickied post having how to make your own ship. That helped me understand the design game, and now I love making my own ships, while before reading this, I hated it.

I read the sticky last night (I printed it out, went to sleep on it) Had all kinds of ideas this morning. Unfortunitly I can only get some of them to work. I'm patient. Just got over a 2 hour match trying stuff out. I should be working! What I see is I build a nice ship, enter into the game(I even save them)they are there. Once in a blue moon I can get it where I can use it(I use the wierdest graphics for my stuff)I just can't get it to work consistintly. Hell, that last game I made a fleet and tried to send around. I got crushed. Now if I could have made my own ships ....... Here is to a large patch

Try this my friend. Start a new game. Delete everything except your home planet. You will find this game so freaking boring, but you learn a few things. So start a new game, pause it and save it. Delete all mines. Delete all military vesels. Delete all private ships. Delete the star base. Just make shure you don't delete or erase your home planet or game over. It happened to me

What you will see, is the game is so very slow. You will see you have to build a starbase in order to build your first scout ship. Then you will have to make your first constructor ship. This will take forever and a day. Even at 4X speed the game runs so freaking slow with nothing to do.

Now you will appreciate the Codeforce gave us a small fleet to work with, so our economy gets going, and some infanstructure built. If you earase all the ships as I said, and then go to the design screen and delete everything there, you will have to build your own ships. Now you will get a better understanding on how things work here. After about an hour maybe 2. I couldn't stand this past 2 hours, but I learnt so much.

Then in your next game, erase all your military ships, but keep your star base, and your scout ship, and constructors, but just delete the destroyers, frigates and escorts. Now you will appreciate them more when the pirates start attacking very soon. As I said, it's not much fun, but I lernt alot this way.

Maybe this will work for you. Hope it helps.

OR, do this (not trolling, real suggestion):

Go to your Add-Remove programs and Delete the whole game after a few hours of hair pulling and moaning. You will feel either:

1. Relief or
2. Sadness or
3. Happiness.

What I'd recommend is if you run into something that really pees you off in DW and you spent some time dealing with it - turn PC off, spend a few days doing something else, try to play some other game of similar type like "Sins of Solar Empire" or work on your house if you have one, or on your wife (same) and then next time you have some free time think about DW again... Then do based on what you feel.

I've done this. Well not removed the game, but haven't loaded it in 3 days because I know it will just tick me off.

The 1.03 update looks to address some of the glaring issues I have so I'll jump back in with that and see where I'm at, but meh, I'm thinking it's going to be 1.05 or 1.06 before I'm really excited again.

Oh well, back to SotS I suppose for my space fix
