I think this is a bug. The AI ship design puts a hospital in this cruiser ship design.

This is the screen shot:

Hospitals are supposed to function on such designs, but due to a present bug, they don't. Presumably when the bug where hospitals do not function on anything other than a Spaceport is fixed, the cruiser hospitals will function and grant the hospital bonus to planets they hang out by.

Of course, even if they worked, putting a hospital on a cruiser is questionable, anyway...but in theory, it would function if that bug were fixed.

Hospitals on cruisers and any other troop carrying vessels are present for troop 'healing' purposes. Hospital description clearly states that this component helps troops on board to recover their lost readiness (or strength, can`t recall exactly).

This particular usage is flawed because troops with lost readiness will refuse to be picked up by ships anyway, as seems to frequently occur when I drop them for an invasion, then try to pick them up: There is often one legion that won't go because their readiness was damaged in the fighting.

Really? I thought it was only to increase happiness on colonies.

Well, it was supposed to do that, too, but that doesn't work and may or may not ever work, plus it is a dubious function to begin with, given that the ship is liable to pull up and move. It is also supposed to improve healing of damaged troops, except you can't apparently pick up damaged troops, so again, meh. At the moment, a hospital on a ship appears to be of dubious use, but then, it's not expensive and it's only 10 units of space, so it's not going to make or break you.

Concerning happiness, Elliot has said it should be fixed for the next patch

if you think about it, a hospital in space improving the morale of an entire colony is already dubious. When someone has a critical accident they rush him/her to the nearest hospital. Not only is the cost of going to space prohibitive, the G force encountered will further harm an injured person and the distance is such that it is completely impractical. As for regular care for non injured... well, that is still covered by land based hospitals just fine.

I agree taltamir. I doesnt belong in military ships.

Actually I meant that it doesn't belong in ships OR space stations...

Although, those should have a hospital, but not one catering to the 6 billion people on the planet and making them happier... one catering to the crew and providing some combat bonus or another. (say, a morale bonus to the on-board troops who know there is care for them if they are injured in combat)

Since we can't build hospitals on planets, this will have too do  lol

Ah, Taltamir, but what about newly founded colonies? They wouldn't even have hospitals yet, right? No infrastructure to speak of. So, I can see having it for them and the bonus would get less as the colony develops.

Whos to say that you have to transport them to the hospital. What about the doctors coming to the planets to help out, espically developing colonies like Astorax has said. They could already set up bases or clinics or triage or what ever you call it already on the planet.

then it isn't a hospital, just a transport ship. You can transport doctors TO the planet. And the colony ship can include a "mobile hospital" to hold out while constructing more serious ones.

Don't think of the hospital as a place for a emergencies. Think of it as a place to perform complicated medical operations in a perfectly sterile and weightless environment. There are obviously huge potential advantages to such an environment. You wouldn't expect a small orbital hospital to be large enough to significantly affect an entire planet's medical needs, but for a few expensive and dangerous operations it could be helpful. Curing cancer and stuff like that.

The human body is designed to operate in gravity... so there are actually huge and dangerous repercussions to operating in zero G...

That being said, production of certain drugs and artificial biological constructs could benefit from zero G... so I guess it could be manufacturing specialized medicines rather then treating patients. But that would better be represented by being called "Medical Center" (or ideally, "0G Medical Center") rather then "Hospital" (and a Medical Center can occasionally treat patients... a Hospital never manufactures its own drugs, clones organs, or does those other kind of things, a hospital treats patients)... BTW, an component on the ship is probably subjected to its artificial gravity (via rotation and centrifugal acceleration) which it has to avoid the horrible debilitating conditions caused to humans by 0G.

I always thought you would have to have either artificial gravity or an inertia-less drive to even use FTL without killing yourself.  The cancellation of inertia would seem to imply control of gravity, too.  Maybe I'm wrong.

1. only if you travel in our reality... hence the whole notion of "warping" via a different one.. blech. 2. You still have gravity in your space hospital then, unless you can turn artificial gravity on off on a per room basis inside the ship... 3. If you can turn it on off on a per room basis inside the ship, you might as well use the same tech to create zeroG hospitals on the planet.
