I'm a builder.

I like the look of my empire when there is an absolute glut of private sector craft flitting around. As such, I tend to get colonies on any planet that can support a colony.

Once my economy is up and major planets are highly developed, I'll start dumping mining stations on essentially every resource source in every system, regardless of type.

But I'm having a really hard time telling if anyone is even buying all this extra resource base, and can't tell whether or not its doing anything to the prices of any of the stuff I'm buying or selling.

My questions would be, how does strategic resource acquisition and stockpiling affect the economy? Is it good? Bad? Should I mine only what I need? Should I let mining ships do most of this work for me?

Tbh, it doesn't matter, resources are too abundant in this game anyway
Once your economy is up and running, you'll find you have more resources coming in then you could possibly spend, and thats without mining everything

Usually the only non-gas resources that I've personally seen even having demand outstrip supply is Polymer

The AI empires are usually quite able to supply there own resources with the abundance
Personally, I reckon some component resources (and planet consumption) should be higher
Hell, put a modifier in the game start up so those who like the current system can keep it (call it an economy difficulty setting)
