SUBJECT: ENEMY CASUALTIES AT OOSTHAVEN BATTLE.
DATE: FEB 19th, 1942

Figures with enemy casualties in the battle at Oosthaven. 42 enemy aircrafts destroyed. They must not be from HMS HERMES, probably they were from a "Victorious" Class Carrier with HMS HERMES or 2 "Victorious" Class Carrier. Two enemy fighters group identified (Sea Hurricane and Fairey Fulmar) with another 2 torpedo groups (Albacore and Swordfish), all of them with more than 50 aircrafts.
Enemy lost in two days 11 fighters (5 Fairey and 6 Sea Hurricanes). Enemy carrier group C.A.P. must be weak.

23rd Air Fleet assets at Koepang have launched the first air raid against Darwin till 1st Air Fleet destroyed port and airfield there. One C5M2 chutai will report about damages.

In the first strike, 25 A6M2 escorting 21 G4M1 taken off from Koepang AFs reporting only 2 runway hits after 42 x 250kg GP bombs and 84 x 60kgs bombs launched. We will follow on with our attacks to supress enemy airfield and destroy all enemy factories at Port Darwin.

I must request a new G4M1 daitai to smash enemy facilities at northern Australia coast (Broome port is used by enemy to raid over our shippings)

(1) Prepping Palembang Assault

Our 3rd Air Division assets have launched several air raids over enemy ground defenses:

a) 25 G4M1 taken off from Singapore reporting 12 casualties on Palembang B.F.
b) 36 Ki-48 and 31 Ki-21-IIa strike Palembang B.F. reporting 67 casualties and 4 gun disabled.
c) 11 Ki-21-IIa strike at Afternoon raid reporting 11 casualties from So Sumatra Bn.

Tomorrow our IJN parachute / light navy infantry will assault tomorrow Palembang.

(2) DARWIN

25 A6M2 and 21 G4M1 strike Darwin AF meeting with 21 P39D over enemy skies. 1 A6M2 and 1 enemy fighter were downed. Our LB reported 5 runway hits.
Our recon flights reported several ships at port with 1 AS and 1 AK docked.

(3) LUZON

48 Ki-27 escorting 42 IJA bombers strike Bataan enemy ground positions, reporting 23 runway hits on AF with 1 Ki-48 downed.
A second strike with 37 IJA bombers attacked Bataan reporting 5 runway hits.

(4) BURMA

18 Ki-43 escorting 15 Ki-30 attacked Magwe AF meeting with 9 H81A3 and 3 Hurricane II. 4 IJA fighters were downed with 1 Ki-30 downed by enemy Flak. 5 runway hits were reported over enemy AF.

(1) Chungking Sweeping air missions

1st Air Sweep : 13 Ki-43 meet 13 H81A3 flying pirates over chinese capital. 1 enemy fighter downed.
2nd Air Sweep : 10 Ki-43 meet 6 H81A3 flying pirates over enemy air space. 1 enemy fighter was downed.

All our fighters flying from Ichang AF.

(2) Nanyang OFFENSIVE

In the Kaifeng-Nanyang main road our forces (37th I.Div and 13rd Inf.Mixed Brigade) reported enemy heavy resistance. 84th, 48th and 85th Chinese Corps supported by 21st Group Army HQ there. Our forces lost 641 men vs 574 chinese casaulties.

At Nanyang our forces will launch a second massive assault tomorrow.

(3) Changcha - Nanchang chinese counterstrike

Enemy forces from 27th and 30th Group Armies have assaulted 40th Division positions in the Changcha-Nanchang main road. Our forces have lost 604 IJA men vs 1544 chinese casualties. 2 Brigades are marching at double to reinforce our positions near to Changcha.

I-2 report several engagements with enemy ships off Pago Pago:

At early morning I-2 C.O. spotted at surface an enemy tanker, she is engaged and sunk after 3 torpedo hits.
Hours later I-2 spotted at surface another enemy unescorted freighter. Identified like xAK MORMANCLAND, she was struck by 7 shell hits. NO confirmed sunk.

(2) Enemy Submarines

Dutch oceanic submarine off Balikpapan
Dutch oceanic submarine near Lingga (Java Sea)
USN "Gato" class submarine near Sendai
Dutch coastal submarine near Donggala (D.E.I)
USN "S" Class submarine off Ambon.

xAK Teiryu Maru was torpedoed and sunk by enemy coastal submarine near Donggala. She was loaded with near 2.000 tons of war supplies to deliver at Balikpapan.

PB Fumi Maru reported 2 hits on an enemy oceanic submarine near Sendai.
PB Saichu Maru reported another 7 hits on an USN submarine off Ambon.

46 IJA fighters escorting 40 IJA bombers have take off from Ichang AF to strike Chungking AF. 4 H81A3 with 2 chinese I-15-III (soviet built) at CAP over enemy skies. Our fighters reported 1 I-15 and 1 pirate H81 downed in dogfight with 1 Ki-27 downed in a2a. Our LB pilots reported only 1 runway hits.

Rest days will be neccesary to uplevel our Ichang AF and improve our facilities there to let more aircrafts in our raids against enemy capital city.

Palembang have been liberated for western oppressors !.
Our light forces have assaulted Palembang this morning to coordinate with IJN arrival of Relieve Troops at this base. Tomorrow will arrive 12th Base Force to relive our Forces that will be sent at once to support Java landings.

34 IJA casualties was the only price to Palembang. Enemy dutch Army lost 888 troops in the combats around Palembang. Enemy troops fleeing to jungle.

33rd Division Det B have reported the fall of Magwe. Our forces have lost 66 men vs 1.125 CW casualties from 1st Burma Brigade, 10th Burma Rifle Bn and 104 RAF B.Force.

Forces from 55th Infantry Division and 143rd Inf.Regiment are assembly to assault Miktina.
One Construction Coy have been detacched from Rangoon to Magwe to work on AF repairs at this base.

In the air, 10 Ki-43 and 23 Ki-30 meet on enemy air space with 8 american pirates supported by 3 british Hurricanes. Our lost 2 Ki-43.

Air reinforcements have been requested to LGEN. Sugawara, C-in-C 3rd Air Division. When Magwe AF will be repaired, one JAAF Bn will be transfered by railway from Rangoon to Magwe to support air supperiority missions over enemy air bases.

At night time, this early morning an enemy convoy was spotted nearby our war patrol area. Running fast at surface to intercept enemy ships, my submarine engaged a large freighter, identified like XAK JEFFERSON MYERS. She was torpedoed and sunk after 1 torpedo struck her. My second victim was another xAK, reported another torpedo hit but not confirmed sinking. A third freighter was engaged at surface, This shill was identified like XAK FORBES HAUPTMANN, and sink after 1 torpedo and 5 gun deck shell hits.

I am shadowing enemy convoy to sent more ships to bottom.

My position: 240 nm S.W. of San Clemente Island in the Western Coast Blockade Area.

7 enemy LB-30 heavy bombers were intercepted over Lae skies by our Chitose Ku K-1 Daitai whith 17 A6M2. All enemy heavy bombers were damaged but we lost 1 A6M2 fighting with these air monsters. No damages on AF. Heavy AA Arty requested to Lae AF.

Chitose Ku K-1 Daitai was deployed at Lae after be upgraded at Truk from the oldies A5M4 to newer A6M2 Type-0 Naval Fighter.

Another 5 B-17 were reported intercepted over Koepang by A6M2 from 23rd Air Flotilla. No damages on port or airfield neither aircraft losses were reported.

Misawa Ku K-1 Daitai will be transfered in few days to South Sea to reinforce our anti-shipping assets in this area.

Our screening submarines in the South Australia eastern coast report enemy ships movement to northeast. Air Naval Search missions will be flown tomorrow from Shortlands and Munda with H6K4 and news H8K4.

My flag ship, HIJMS HIRYU was attacked this afternoon by an enemy unknown submarine near Georgetown when CARDIV-2 steaming north to close support landings at Medan. One enemy torpedo struck her, but luckely this torpedo was a dud !!.... Our destroyer were deployed to ping enemy contact and sink her but no attack was made. ASW Special Assets requested to clean up Malaya Western coast from enemy submarines. Another (british?) submarine have been spotted by our naval search missión 40 nm east from the other.

Today our air assets deployed at Ichang have launched a new air raid against population at Chungking.
At morning, 28 IJA fighters escorting 43 IJA bombers have strike enemy capital, under Clear sky no enemy aircrafts were spotted. No air losses were reported, our pilots reports 16 manpower hits (3.460 fires). A second air raid with 9 Ki-30 escorted by 24 Ki-27b reported another 6 manpower hits (4.206 fires).

In few days a new Ki-21-Ic Daitai will be redeployed at Ichang from metropoli to reinforce our air assets at China for these special missión. A distributing of chemichal warfare unit have been deployed at Ichang to improve our outcome against enemy population.

Chineses will be exterminated and Chungking erased from maps to become in an arid cemetery or come back to Middle Age....

(1) MINE WARFARE

24 mines mopped up by AMcs off Merak. They met with 3 enemy PT Boats (Dutch?) and withdraw to Palembang. Another two DMS engaged with enemy boats withdrawing to Oosthaven after a short engagement.

17 mines were mopped up at Palembang by AMcs.

(2) AIR WAR

53 G3M2 raided at Soerabaja. NO ENEMY CAP. 15 Airbase hits, 3 airbase supply hits and 50 runway hits. Several docked ships spotted at port.

Over Batavia, 22nd Air Flotilla launched a heavy air strike with 44 G3M2 and 25 G4M1. 1 enemy bomber (139WH3) was destroyed at ground with 5 airbase hits, 1 airbase supply hits and 27 runway hits reported by our pilots.

Medan Airfield was smashed by 22 Ki-21 flying from Singapore (3rd Air Division). 12 runway hits.
2 enemy air transport L-18 aircrafts were downed by LRCAP over Batavia.

(3) ABDAFLOT SPOTTED

Enemy warships were spotted off Broome by a naval recon flight (C5M2) flying from Koepang. General Quarters sounds at airfield for all air assets. 22 G4M1 escorted by 7 A6m2 take off from Koepang bearing 220 to locate and destroy enemy ships. With bomb payload our bombers not reported any damages on enemy destroyers spotted off Broome.

Following ships were identified:

USS JOHN D. EDWARDS (Flush Decker)
HMS ELECTRA
USS EDSALL (FLush Decker)
HMAS TENEDOS
HMAS EXPRESS
USS WHIPPLE (Flush Decker).

SUBJECT: 65th Daitai Readiness Condition.
DATE: Feb 23rd, 1942.

After intensive training duties at Keijo ASW Air Warfare Training School, our 65th Daitai/B(Training) Section pilots are nearby to be ready to be transfered to first line units in Yellow Sea, Korean Straits area. In few days they will be transfered to Pilot General Reserve (ASW) to let other pilots can be trained in ASW duties. The trained pilots will await to the newest IJAAF level bomber Ki-49. This level bomber is equipped with M.A.D. and will improve our ASW task in the convoy corridors.
