FROM: VADM. CHUICHI NAGUMO, CEYLAN STRIKING FORCE 2, ABOARD HIJMS KAGA.
TO: ADM. ISOROKU YAMAMOTO, COMBINED FLEET HQ. KURE.
SUBJECT: CEYLAN RAID
DATE: APRIL 10TH, 1942

WITH SURPRISED ENEMY CARRIER AT SHIPYARD I HOPED THAT SHE TRIED TO FLANK AT NIGHT TO AVOID CONTACT WITH US AT FIRST HOURS OF EARLY MORNING. WITH HEAVY ENEMY AIR COVER OVER COLOMBO NAVAL STATION AND HEAVY AA FIRE I PREFER TO TAKE CONSERVATIVE MEASSURES AND PRESERVE SEVERAL WAVES FOR A ANTI-SHIP STRIKE AND GAIN TIME TO RECOVER DAMAGED AIRCRAFTS ON BOARD FOR A MASSIVE STRIKE AGAINST COLOMBO ITSELF.

MY CARRIERS HAVE APPROACHED TO 80 NM OFF COLOMBO TO INTERCEPT ENEMY DAMAGED CARRIER BUT OUR PICKET SUBMARINES AND AIR NAVAL SEARCH FLIGHTS HAVE NOT REPORTED ANY SIGHT !!...

IN OUR FIRST STRIKE AGAINST COLOMBO, 36 A6M2 TAKE OFF TO ESCORT 16 B5N2 AND 35 D3A1 FLYING FROM FLAG CARRIERS (AKAGI -CEYLAN 1- AND KAGA -CEYLAN 2 SF-). 24 ENEMY FIGHTERS WERE MET ON CAP. 14 HURRICANES AND 10 FULMAR DOGFIGTHING VS OUR STRIKE FORCE. WE LOST 2 A6M2, 12 D3A1 AND 5 B5N2 BY DOGFIGHT AND HEAVY AA FIRE. 1 FULMAR WAS DOWNED AT DOGFIGHT AND 1 BOMB WAS REPORTED OVER AN ENEMY SUBMARINE (S-40 ELECTRIC BOAT IDENTIFIED).

A SECOND STRIKE TO SWEEP ENEMY SKY TAKE OFF FROM HIJMS KAGA. 18 A6M2 MET WITH 11 HURRICANES AND 4 FULMARS. 1 FULMAR AND 3 HURRIS WERE DOWNED WITHOUT OWN LOSSES.

AT MORNING, OUR NAVAL SEARCH AIRCRAFTS REPORTS SEVERAL ENEMY SHIPS SPOTTED 80-160 NM WEST OF OUR OWN POSITIONS. THINKING IN THE POSIBILITY THIS SMALLS SHIPS WOULD BE ESCORTING SHIPS OF HMS INDOMITABLE I LAUNCHED SEVERAL AIR WAVES AGAINST ENEMY WITH ORDERS TO SINK ENEMY CARRIER LIKE PRIORITARY, BUT OUR FIRST WAVE WITH 8 B5N2 ESCORTED BY 4 A6M2 ONLY MET AN XAKL (KWAI SANG) THAT WAS SUNK BY ONE TORPEDO HIT. A SECOND WAVE WITH 4 B5N2 ESCORTED BY 5 A6M2 SUNK XAKL SARPEN AFTER 3 TORPEDO HITS. 1 FULMAR WAS MET ON CAP OVER THE SHIP (!!). A THIRD AND FOUR WAVES WERE LAUNCHED WITH 4 B5N2 AND 13 D3A1 REPORTING XAKL HAIYANG SUNK NEAR TRIVANDRUM.

DUE BAD WEATHER, AND STORMS AT HIGH SEA, I WILL RENDEZVOUS WITH MY OILERS TO REPLENISH MY FORCES AND TAKE TIME TO RECOVER MY DAMAGED AIRCRAFTS.

LONG LIVE TO THE EMPEROR !!!

Although its payload is.....well..., the armor 1 is a huge improvement in a force with so much armor zero planes...

traskott,

After sinking one enemy carrier, with another heavily damaged, 3 enemy cruisers and same number of destroyers sent to bottom, without losses in my striking force, but with a heavy storms for few days and heavy air losses (71 IJN vs 54 UK), I am returning Home with my Striking Force to rendezvous with Combined Fleet, Mobile Force and CARDIV3 for a new planned and secret ops.

Thanks for your posting and comments,
Best wishes,
Ramón

Really, traskott, two days fighting under thunderstorms and heavy and deadly AA Fire over Colombo had a butcher price...Many D3A1 were downed by Flak (Soryu air crew was depleted there), with others downed in dogfigth with Hurricanes and Fulmar. I must to return to Home to take pilots from General Reserve, take reemplacement aircrafts, and replenish my ships. Several ships need upgrades and I will send them to drydock too.
However, I am glad with the sinking of FORMIDABLE and 3 cruisers. Indomitable was near to be catched, but she gets underway. These ships were more than 200 victory points and one less aircraft carrier for british.
I hoped better outcomes in dogfights over Colombo, but I think probably the fatigue and fighting under thunderstorm could be a negative factor in my losses. I think was better to withdraw that follow on with fight under this weather conditions.

Best wishes,
Ramón
