Shipyards first, because larger ships dominate equal powerful ships with ease. First of all, there is the shield regeneration. 10 Ships with 100 shields each equal 1000 with 0.3 regen, and one ship with 1000 shields equals 1000 with 3.0 regen. So while you are shooting at one ship, it regens 0.3 while you regenerate 3.0 Second, if one of the small enemy ships is killed, the enemys absolute firepower decreases, while you can still fire with 100%. Third, each of the 10 enemy ships needs a fleet command, an ECM, a proximity array etc... Multiply this with 10, and it's a lot of space wasted! Mind you, that your single battleship only needs 1 of each of these components. Thus it is far more effective in availablity of space for weapons, than 10 small ships. So if anything is important to research, it is ship size all the way.
