Status: offline 		How many units did you land on Wake? Did you only use 4th Maizuru?

If so, that's the problem. Note to Japanese Players: Don't invade Wake with 1 SNLF unit; it will sometimes fail.

There are 2 Nav Gd units handy in the Marshalls Turn 1; send one of those to Wake. Worry about Tarawa or Makin later.

2 SNLF will knock off Wake on the first turn EVERY time.

December 14-18, 1941

I continue to wrestle with balancing time to play our turns, write the AAR, and maintain a POSITIVE marital status!

The last five days has brought the Japanese into full stride as invasion after invasion is occurring with excellent rapidity. The attacks, movements, and fleet involvement has not met with a serious reverse during those days. We;ll proceed with the area-by-area reports:

North Pacific
Paramushiro Jima---There are now three engineering units present who are working to expand the Port to Sz-3 and the AF to Sz-2. The 5th Fleet HQ, supply, and fuel is currently on the way to make this base its home for the foreseeable future.

Amchitka--On the 17th, Amchitka is invaded and is taken the next day. The attack force consisted of a strong Naval Guard and a Mortar Bat. Those troops will load and grab Attu/Kiska before taking up residence on Anchitka. A Base Force and small Engineering unit in sailing to make this their home as well.

Don't plan on grabbing anything else in the Aleutians for the immediate future.

Ordered a trio of DDs to sweep into Dutch Harbor to see if anything is present there.

Central Pacific
Wake---After holding out against the first landing, Wake gets an additional SNLF landed upon it by Fast TF on the 17th and it falls on the 18th. Cost was fairly steep to take the atoll. Lost two large AMC and an AKL as well as getting a CL and DD damaged. CD does work gents.

Marshalls---There is a good amount of fuel and supply now in the Marshalls and I have ordered Eniwetok, Roi-Namur, Kwajalein, and Maleolap to expand facilities and begin Fort construction.

Kido Butai
The KB continues to prowl around the Johnston to Line Islands area. The TF will be recalled within a day or two. Am hoping this obvious movement keeps Michael thinking I'm going to grab Canton or someplace nearby. Once KB returns they will head south to see what is happening there.

SE Pacific
Rabaul---Falls to the 144th Inf Reg and a Base Force on the 14th. The Imperial Guards are then dropped off as both Prep for Port Moresby. All the shipping from those two TF then head back to Truk to bring down the next major lift. Don't have enough shipping here and that is a problem.

Nauru---While landing troops here from Ocean Island, a pair of NZ CLs arrive to fight. The Leander and Achilles attempt to destroy the Invasion Force but two plucky Nipponese DDs successfully (more-or-less) run interference. The Japanese do lose an AK and PB but the CLs don't bag anything else. Nauru falls on the 15th.

Lunga---Landings begin here on the 17th and the base falls on the 18th.

Port Moresby---My recon spots a TF unloading or loading in this hex and so I send the South Seas Force (4 CA and 4 DD) to investigate. They arrive on the evening of the 14th and wipe out a TF. The old CL Adelaide, a PG, and 3 AP are sunk for no cost. Nice little bag of shipping there!

Have to pause in this area for a little bit as I bring more support troops forward to Lae, Rabaul, and Lunga.

Philippines
Luzon---Everything north of Clark is pretty much taken. Am somewhat concerned Michael might get frisky if he realizes just how little is here. The 65th Brigade unloads at Vigan and forms the corps of my strength. Have got artillery and tanks plus alot of support troops but that is about it. Need another couple fo days and then I can get all my Formosa Army planes onto the Luzon AF and they can then carry the burden of the air war.

There are several more air strikes hitting Manila that net an AM, SS Saury, a TK, 3 AK and an AKL. The P-40s are finally pretty well smothered and resistance gets noticably weaker.

Mindanao
Davao---As the crippled CVE Taiyo limps into Port, a Dutch TF of CL De Ruyter and 4 DDs attempt to intercept and finish her off. Thinking something like this might happen, I positioned 2 CL and 4 DD to protect her. The fight is fairly inconclusive with two Japanese DD getting moderately damaged while the Dutch CL and a DD Piet Hein take multiple hits as well.

The most important thing is Taiyo gets into Port. Initial numbers were Sys 43, Flot 83, Eng 4, and no fires. YIKES! I thoroughly expected her to sink, however, I started flying in a HQ unit on 14th and AR Akashi arrived on the 15th. For the 16-17th things looked dicey but the 18th was great! Stats are now: 41--51--04. The tough CVE should make it. Considering two Torps hitting her this is fairly amazing. Just as importantly I am able to off-load her Zeros and will do the same for the Vals once the damage is in better shape (it won't let me right now!).

Cagayan--Landings there by the 2nd Inf Div begin on the 14th.

In a surprising move CL Boise appears on the scene! My Cover Force (CA Maya and 3 DD) move rapidly to counter her approach and pulverize this ship! Maya's first salvo lands two 8" shells and 2 TT rapidly cripple the famous (to Allied players) cruiser. She sinks without having hit an opponent! BANZAI!

Back to the ground side. The 'A' portion of the 2nd ID isn't enough to dislodge the five units present here. I wait a few days for the second lift to arrive carrying Tanks and the 'B' portion. This is enough to capture the base on the 18th.

Numerous PT attacks happen this time and my STF are up to the challenge. A total of SIX of those pests are sunk for no damage.

Mindanao should be fully mine by the 25th. Once that happens these troops shall proceed south and cause trouble.

Malaya
The Japanese finish unloading their first wave and second begins to unload. There is no interference as the entire Malay Army races south to avoid the non-Mersing landing.

Using my Paras I grab Alor Star on the 18th and will take the base SE of Georgetown by the same means tomorrow. All the Japanese units with the exception of an Inf Reg and two Tank Reg are in strategic mode and I don't intend to shift that until I have to. Figure I can have them halfway down the peninsula before they have to deploy. This will help speed up the process even without the Mersing Landing.

Once I have another AF further south I will move the bulk of Army and Navy aircraft to the middle of the peninsula and will then destroy British Airpower at Singapore. ill land at Kuantan in about 3 days. Will have nearly 100 fighters flying LR CAP. The base will fall on the first attack since only one unit is remaining there.

Western DEI
The true Japanese thrust must now be partially apparent. Kuching is taken on the 18th and Singkawang preceds it on the 17th. Base Forces and an Air Flotilla unit are unloading right now and soon there will be 150 planes there. Plan on about 100 Fighters and 50 Bombers to cover and support the Palembang Landing as well as Merak. Palembang's Invasion Force leaves on the 20th and the Merak's Force will follow in conjunction with it.

KB-2 (Akagi/Kaga/Ryujo) protects the massed TFs as will Singkawang's Fighters. A pair of BB with 3 CA should be able to handle anything that might be thrown at them.

Should note the obvious here. Japanese ASW SUCKS! At Singkawang on the 18th the Dutch boat O20 sinks THREE AK! Not one bloody depth charge is dropped on this SS. CRAP...

Miri and Brunei fall and have no damage to their facilities.

Central DEI
Tarakan---Landed upon on the 15th and falls on the 16th. No damage to facilities!

Balikpapan---Shipping is spotted here when Tarakan is invaded. The Hyuga/Ise TF is tapped to investigate. They find 7 AKL and 2 AM loading fuel. In an interesting move, BB Hyuga engages them BY HERSELF. No other Japanese ships participate whatsoever. She sinks all nine ships! Interesting...

Begin Landing at Balikpapan on the 18th. Might not be enough in the first lift so I order the Infantry at Tarakan to load on the 16th and they will land on the 19th. THAT should take the base.

O16 sinks a DMS on the 18th here but gets pounded by 10 DC. Consider myself lucky here after what O20 did at Singakwang!

These landing are being Covered by CVLs Shoho, Zuiho, and CVE Hosho.

Eastern DEI
No action at all. I have six SS moving into the area and they have already begun to be noticed.

Submarine Action:
12-16
I-6 sinks her 3rd ship at Suva. It is a small AMc.

12-18
I-160 shots six Torps at CL De Ruyter (damaged from the Davao fight) NW of Darwin but they all MISS!

Home Islands
1. Have got supply moving to appropriate bases so that helps.
2. Get about 30 ships converting to AKE, PB, and Transports.
3. Begin a CAREFUL expansion of Army bombers and fighters. I want those Helen and Tojo.

Things are looking pretty good right now. Michael is working to counter-punch as I know he will. I am being (for me) very careful in keeping escorts around my TF and keeping as much recon/air search going as possible. Here is the total of ships lost for the five day period:

Japan---DD Yugumo, I-123 (mine at Merak), 6 AK, 7 AKL, 1 CW, 2 PB/G
Allies---CLs Boise and Adelaide, SS Permit, 6 PT, 10 AKL, 2 AK, 3 AP, 3 AM, 5 HDML, 1 PG

Mod Designers: Do you have thoughts as to what is best for researching this early in the campaign? Any input would be good.

AE QUESTION: I find that my Sentai and Daitai only have a single upgrade option when I click auto upgrade. Is there something I am missing when it comes to having CHOICES in the upgrade? Thanks.

Good advise Qball and that is exactly what I did and they held. I should have done a bombardment but didn't. It took the third unit to get those pesky Marines to give it up.

Status: offline 		I am starting to get concerned regarding upgrading my Daitai and Sentai. Am enclosing a screenshot of a group of Army Fighters in the Home Islands. When I click upgrade I get Nicks and nothing else for choice.

Did I make a mistake in starting the game with Upgrade options or is this simply how AE works?

Status: offline 		This is a screenshot of on-going operations around Borneo. Balikpapan is about to fall (it is Dec 19th) and I am releasing the Palembang and Merak Invasion Forces. Using waypoints I am trying to avoid the obvious route and avoid Singapore's airpower for the moment.

KB-2 (Akagi/Kaga/Ryujo) travel within the TF as they move. I bump their CAP to 60%.

The Mini-KB (Zuiho/Shoho/Hosho) are making a dash along the south coast of Borneo (CAP 60%) to link-up so KB-2 can do some raiding and hit a few Ports.

There are 45 Zero at Singakwang with 27 flying LR CAP over the TF. Between these forces we should be in great shape to crush any aerial opposition during the movement.

The TF are carrying roughly 3 Inf Div worth of power. First we grab Palembang and then immediately move onto Merak. It is my fervent hope to have all of Java captured by January 15th.

SS: Notice all the sharks swimming in the Malacca Strait area?!! CVE Hosho got hit TWICE by DUDS! Let us cheer the Americans who never tested those Torps in any meaningful way!

December 19, 1941

Am going to try to update every turn if possible with the AAR.

This was a pretty busy turn:

North Pacific
The Attu Invasion Force departs Amchitka to grab that base. A STF of 3 DD are about to sweep into Dutch Harbor to see if anything is present there.

Central Pacific
Wake--Have a TF moving to Wake to pick-up one of those three SNLF/Naval Guard for deployment elsewhere. Will leave those two on the Atoll and bring in a couple of Construction units to begin Fort construction.

Marcus--The Guam Invasion Force is now moving to Marcus to form its garrision. Once again it will have two SNLF/Nvl Guard with a Base Force about to arrive.

Normally I wouldn't think about creating base garrisions this early but I simply decided this axis of possible advance needed to be covered fairly quickly.

SE/South Pacific
No real action outside of the Marshalls in the SE area. KB is recalled to Jaluit to replenish.

At Truk a TF of APs lift SE Pacific HQ, an Air Flotilla, 2 Con Bat, and a large Base Force to go to Rabaul.

Another TF will arrive tomorrow and pick-up the second echelon of troops to make Lae a viable threat to the Allies.

Philippines
Michael puts up 35 P-40 over Bataan hoping to catch some unescorted Bombers. Instead the base is Swept by 15, 6 and 9 Zeros. The aerial battle is pretty fierce with the Allies losing 7 planes to the Japanese 5. A small detachment of Bombers did fly in and 5 of 12 were shot down in the afternoon.

Air Search spotted a group of ships leave Legaspi and head east. The Naka and 3 DDs stage a series of mid-ocean intercepts and sink 2 AKL and an AK. Might be more ships so I move a Mavis group to Saipan and order the STF to patrol farther east.

Another Raiding TF of CL Kiso and 3 DD tangle with the remaining American PTs and sink 3 of 4 for no damage.

Have a TF about to land and take Cebu.

Laoag is captured.

West and Central DEI
Already described the movement for the Palembang and Merak Invasions as well as CV plans.

Had Japanese ASW cripple KXVII hitting it with 8 DC (two critical hits) and the Sub is heavily damaged.

Capture Beaufort and Jesselton

Malaya
Paras capture Taiping! I can now move all my ground forces by rail to this point before having to slowly work my way down the Peninsula. There is one unit in Georgetown so I will attack it with an Inf Reg.

Taiping will get several Base Force so I can get ready to attack the skies over Singapore.

The Kuantan Invasion Force departs Saigon. There is only one unit present at the target so this should be an easy capture. Will protect the shipping through LR CAP. Hope the British plane shave already been chewed up attacking my Palembang force!

China
Hong Kong is attacked and Forts drop to Zero. Will wait a day or two and have the base.

Status: offline 		We just finished the Dec 24th turn and things keep rolling along in our campaign. Think I will do a region-by-region report later today.

Couldn't figure out why my planes weren't giving me a choice of upgrades when I clicked on them. Since nobody responded, I emailed Juan and he agreed to look. I had NO IDEA that the yellow line was to be clicked on to show all possible upgrade choices. Color me stupid. Something I had no idea about and wanted to share that with readers in case they didn't know.

This clears the way to continue on with the conflict.

Amchitka
15th Nvl Guard
14th Ind Mortar Bat
4,000 Supply

The convoy path shown on the screenshot portrays a large convoy carrying 7th Base Force and 24,000 supply. The supply will be divided between Amchitka and Attu.

Attu
No garrison but that will change in about a month's time.

Paramushiro Jima
5th Fleet HQ
Fortress
3 Construction Bat
10,000 Supply and 8,000 Fuel

A convoy carrying a JNAF AF unit and 15,000 Supply is on the way.

These operations are covered by 6 DD. There are no aircraft assigned to the North as yet.

Status: offline 		Have had a bit of action here during the time of December 20-24, 1941. Michael is moving some shipping out of the Philippines north of the Marianas and Marcus. On the 21st and 22nd I have Mavis attack these ships as they pass the described islands. The planes damage 2 AK and an AKL. Each ship takes at least two bombs as they pass.

My garrison at Marcus is taking shape as a large Naval Guard and Engineering Regiment are now present and supplied with nearly 20,000. Am expanding all facilities and forts here since I don't plan on using the base for a while. Will add and BF for planes in about a month.

Wake has three Infantry units and a Base Force as well as plenty of supply. Don't plan to do much here but simply dig-in.

The Marshalls are pretty calm with Forts being worked on. Am low on supply and fuel here so there are several TF traveling to and from to take care of that issue.

Have got about 18 SS operating from Kwajalein. Most of them are patrolling between Midway and northern Hawaii as well as Hawaii and the West Coast. This is my forward base as there are all sorts of support ships based here.

Status: offline 		The Solomons and New Guinea are in a period of reinforcement. The Japanese quickly grabbed Kavieng, Rabaul, Lae, and Lunga. On the 24th Milne Bay falls to a Fast TF carrying the 15th Base Force.

Rabaul has the SE Area Fleet, an Air Flotilla, Imperial Guards Brigade and 144th Inf Reg. Nearly everything is prepping for Port Moresby. Expect to be ready to attack that base around January 5, 1942.

Current aircraft consist of 2 Chutai of Zero (will resize one of them) and a Daitai of Betty. For warships I have 4 CA, 2 CL, and 6 DD. As can be seen on the screen, I have a group of 6 SS (3 Ro- and 3 I-) moving down to Australia's eastern coast.

The KB is currently passing Nandi on its way to Lunga to reprovision and then Cover the PM Landing.

Status: offline 		As can be seen Northern and Central Luzon is mine. A landing was just completed at Naga and I'll have that base on Christmas Day. The biggest units present on Luzon are still only the 65th Inf Brigade, 4th ID--C (Naga), several Tank units, and a couple of SNLF.

Michael falls into the trap that most Allied Commander do of falling back into Clark and Bataan without FIGHTING the Japanese. I think this is always a mistake. Considering how weak my Infantry strength here is, this is a very GOOD thing! This situation will change when I bring the 38th ID over from Hong Kong in a few days.

Manila only has two units in it right now so it appears Michael is going to fight for Clark and Bataan. This is why I will bring the 38th in at southern Luzon so I can grab Manila and hit Clark from the south.

The American P-40s have finally been crushed. Once I was able to move my planes fully onto Luzon, I flew massed Sweeps over Bataan on the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. S+During this time the Japanese have shot down over 30 Fighters with numerous Operational losses adding to that total.

Bataan, Clark, and Manila are now hit by bombers every day to prevent any Fort building.

Status: offline 		Big events have been unfolding here over the last week.

Cebu--A large landing occurred with two Inf Regiments here. The troops have attacked once and lowered the Forts. Am waiting a few days as they are badly disrupted and want the next attack the carry the island.

Mindanao--this large island is almost all mine with nearly 1 1/2 Inf Divisions effectively dealing with the Allied troops present. Davao is my forward Naval Base right now. 16th Army HQ is here as well as several strong support units. CVE Taiyo continues to be pumped out here. My small Raiding TF return here to refuel and provision from the AS, AKE, AR, and other support ships present.

Tarakan fell without issue and her oil facilities are fully intact.

Balikpapan is mine and NONE of her facilities were damaged whatsoever as well. Have been fairly lucky with Brunei, Tarakan, and Balikpapan being intact. Will have to think GOOD THOUGHTS regarding Palembang. Am moving two Base Force and an Air Flotilla to Balikpapan to conduct aerial operations.

Jolo was important earlier but I am now moving the forces from there forward.

The Northern tip of Borneo shows two TF that are picking off the bases on the perimeter of Borneo as well as moving towards the Central Philippines.

Aircraft are moving into these new bases and there are considerable Naval Forces present to protect the convoys from the Allied Naval Forces. There has been plenty of time for the Allied Fleet to be consolidated so I expect an attempt to be made somewhat soon.

Next target is Makassar...

Status: offline 		The Allies have elected to fall back nearly the whole distance to just above Johore Bharu. The Army is now marching down the western side of the peninsula.

Specific Events:
Dec 23rd--Paras grab Kuantan and two TF begin immediate unloading.

Dec 24th--Some small British attacks from Singapore damage 3 AK as my Fighters fly in to begin operations from the base.

Dec 25th--The British throw everything they have at the Kuantan shipping and they get SMACKED! The Japanese place 18 Zero, 12 Oscar, and 12 Tojo on CAP and they slaughter the incoming attacks. During the course of the day the Brits lose nearly 50 aircraft in exchange for only 3 Japanese losses. This days sees the creation of 4 Aces (2 in the Zero and 2 in the Tojo units). Several ships are still hit but crushing British air is far more important.

Throughout these days Japanese air hits anything above Johore Bharu. By January 1st, the planes of the Empire will begin to smash through Singapore's defenses. Once control of the skies is grabbed anything and everything will be bombed at Singapore.

Not sure where the Brits plan to fight. There are 16 units in Johore Bharu, 5 moving along trails trying to get to Johore Bharu, and the rest are in Singapore.

The picture details elements of the Fleet returning from their Palembang and Merak Operations for replenishment and fuel.

Georgetown falls to the first assault on the 27th.

Status: offline 		From the start of the war to now, the plan has been to grab Oil Centers and get to Java ASAP. These objectives are effectively met by December 28, 1941. Moving rapidly we grabbed Kuching and Singakwang within 10 days of the start of the war. A short pause has followed as I needed to gather all 6 CV (Akagi, Kaga, Ryujo, Shoho, Zuiho, and Hosho) into supporting range to protect the large Invasion Forces going after Palembang and Merak.

The Operations are planned in conjunction with each other. The Carriers take a central position with LR CAP protecting both TF as they moved to their targets. Large and powerful STF protect each Invasion Force. Palembang had 3 CA, 2 CL, and 8 DD plus warships imbedded in the Invasion Force. Merak was protected by 2 BB several cruisers, and 12 DD.

To say that these landings were a success is an understatement!

Palembang
The STF moves in on the 23rd and smashes a PT TF. Landings begin that day with nearly 1 1/2 Inf Div worth of strength landing. As expected Michael was moving engineers into the base in hopes of destroying the facilities. A total of 5 small Inf units and 5 small BF are already present when the Landings commence.

Worries me what I might have found if I had waited several more weeks before landing!

Surprisingly there was no aerial attempts at my shipping while unloading. I had tried to time the Kuantan, Palembang, and Merak Operations within days of each other to weaken Allied aerial strength. It appears to have worked fairly well. The Brits lost all those planes over Kuantan and couldn't do anything over Palembang.

My disruption was surprisingly bad with the landing so I decided to wait to attack until the 26th. During those days about 30-40 Betty-Nell hit the base and troops from Singkawang. When the Shock Attack was launched and it was playing out, I prepared to sacrifice my eldest son in hopes of bribing the dice Gods. When the attack carried the base at 5-1, I very nervously waited for the turn to end so I could check the facilities...

My "YES!" might have been heard in the next door house when I found that only 8 of 900 Oil Centers were damaged as well as only 9 of 1020 Refineries!

BANZAI!!!


Merak
As the landings played out on Palembang I moved the Merak Invasion Force into the target range. This landing comprised two reinforced Infantry Divisions. Christmas Eve served as Japanese D-Day.

Wow! CD scored a bunch of times as my minesweeping worked the area and landing went on. I made a mistake here. My troops were ALL ashore by the end of 24th, however, they didn't have hardly any supplies. Made the bad decision to keep unloading on Christmas Day and saw the CD continue to hammer my shipping. By the end of the day I had lost 1 AMC and 7 AK to those 6" and 3" guns. Rather expensive lesson...

The base easily fell on the 25th and I've got troops heading straight for Batavia. Since damage was non-existent I was able to bring in 27 Zero and 12 Oscars for direct CAP.

This was a good thing as the Dutch threw everything they had at the Japanese landing forces! In a repeat of the Kuantan experience, the Dutch lose 49 planes to only 3 Japanese on the 24th. An additional 40+ fall on the 25th to just 5 Japanese losses that day. As can be expected some bombers did get through and they added to the CD carnage by sinking 2-3 more AK.

Subs
Michael has filled the area between Palembang, Merak, and Singkawang with at least 15 boats. They are scoring a bunch and to counter them I have 81 Betty flying out of Palembang on ASW Attack. All ships moving through this area are in large, well defended (for Japanese ASW) Task Forces. Isn't helping a lot but I am damaging Allied SS as I lose my own ships.

Will detail these specifics in the SS Update.

Summary
The combined operations have cost the Allies well over 125 aircraft and have severely hurt the British and Dutch AF. This is a HUGE development and paves the way for continous operations.

Merak has over 1,000 Assault Value moving towards Batavia. These troops will be reinforced by about 400 more from the Palembang Invasion Force. The combined weight of these troops shall take Java pretty quickly. My hope is for all of Java to be mine no later then January 20th.

The Japanese Fleet is withdrawing to either Cam Rahn Bay or Davao right now. The CVs are going to the latter while the surface forces are split.

Pretty solid work I think!

Army
1. Keep producing about 12 Oscar 1a and expand to nearly 80 my Oscar 1c (Twin .50 Cal MG)
2. Set Tojo to expand to about 125 in research. Perhaps I can bring them in a month or two early if we get lucky.
3. Some Tony research expanded
4. Start the heavy investment into MISTER Frank

Navy
1. The war starts with Japan producing 100 M2 Zero
2. Add some M3 and M3b to the expansion

Will detail this some more when I get back from picking up my eldest at school.

Why produce the Oscar 1a?

I would stick to TOJO only. It's a toss-up with TONY on capabilities depending on version, but it comes later, and the key is the SERVICE RATING: Tony does no good if it's sitting on the ground

Check the reinforcements before producing too many A6M3s. In Stock, there is only 1 12-plane Chutai that requires that model; that's it. Otherwise, stick to A6M2, and upgrade to A6M3a.

Status: offline 		In this mod A6M3 is carrier-capable (it actually was in RL), therefore everything can upgrade to it. Making Oscars Ia is indeed pointless. Although not converting the Nate plant at Maebashi until you're out of engines for Nates might be a good idea.

It's strange, but although early Tojos add only two rifle-caliber MGs over Oscars, the improvement in firepower seems noticeable. In my Japanese PBEM I assigned a half-dozen of the very small factories to pushing forward Tojo IIa. We'll see if that works. I intend to keep making Oscars too. As in this mod A6M3a is replaced with A6M3b, which emphasizes better protection over range, late Oscars are the longest-range escorts available.

I was producing a limited number of the Oscar 1a simply because the plant was there to start with and I wanted to leave it be until January 1st. Am highly concerned about getting TOO carried away converting and expanding. Probably nothing to worry about but I try to do it in a stagger manner.

Researching the Tojo IIa is a sound idea. I was debating on it but hadn't made up my mind. Tony work is being done so I can have a few for point defense and to fill out the incoming units.

I keep forgetting about M3 being CV capable! DUH... Will take care of that issue and see just how effective the 3b are for base defense.

Status: offline 		As alluded to earlier, Sub action has been pretty hot-and-heavy. Allied SS have a perfect set-up for the convoys going into and around Palembang, Merak, and Singkawang. Japanese SS continue doing fairly well too. Here is the action by day:

I-122 was ordered a while ago to place a minefield due west of Rangoon in a shallow water hex. As she does so a convoy wanders into the minefield and the Sub has a field day as she sees an AK hit two mines and then she sinks Not ONE, NOT TWO, but THREE AK all by her little lonesome! Nice work. Extra Saki for all hands!

Heavy action. I've cleared a lot of the shipping in this area and have condensed a bunch into just two large TF with ASW ratings of about 30. This is about as good as I can make my ASW right now.

Should note with Borneo cleared out, I have begun moving TK into the area. Got TK loading at Brunei, Tarakan, and Balikpapan. There are several small Engineer units at these places expanding the Ports to make loading easier.

Status: offline 		I've seen this topic posted many times but haven't really paid attention until right now. The Japanese need to re-size two Chutai into Daitai. This is what I did:

Took the CV and flew off the Zero Daitai. It was then replaced by the Chutai. I clicked re-size to fit and disbanded the TF into the Port. Assume that if I re-form the Carrier into a TF tomorrow then I will have a 27 plane Daitai.

Is that correct???

Status: offline 		I got one of two Zero Chutai to expand. The other didn't so I'll see if I have it taken care of next turn.

Moved a Val and Kate Chutai to Davao to do the same thing. I think I've pulled enough pilots from the Home Island Daitai to provide me with at least 15-20 excellent pilots to fill these groups out.

KB is about to enter Rabaul for a few days R&R and I will expand a Zero Chutai to Daitai there too. Once I've done this then things should be pretty good.

December 30-31, 1941

Two pretty calm turns pass as the Japanese take a short breather and let the ground-pounders pick-up the slack. For the most part the Fleet has taken 3-5 days off and been disbanded in Can Rahn Bay, Davao, or Rabaul.

The heavy air casualties inflicted upon the British and Dutch have led to a total lack of aerial attacks and/or opposition. Imagine that my opponent is resting and re-organizing his forces for the next big push.

Regions:
North Pacific
Very calm as I am now simply building bases and Forts. This are will heat-up again once I have the Political Points to pull a large Inf Unit out and deploy it. Am giving serious thought to Dutch Harbor but want to think about it for a bit.

Central Pacific
My recon has picked-up several single ship TF moving towards Midway. These ships are from Manila and it seems a shame to CRUSH them but I do. The Training Cruiser Katori and an old DD make two mid-ocean intercepts and sink two AKLs on the 30th. Not often one of those fairly useless Training Cruisers does something but here we are.

Marcus--This base is now set with an Engineering unit, 2 SNLF, and a Base Force. There is 15,000 supply and we're working on the AF as well as the Forts.

Wake--Same thing except we have an SNLF, Naval Guard and a Base Force with about 10,000 Supply.

South Pacific
The KB refuels on the 30th at Lunga from its AOs and heads for some R&R at Rabaul. Will re-size a couple of Chutai while there.

The South Seas TF (4 CA, 2 CL, and 5 DD) bombard Port Moresby for minimal damage on the 31st.

Will start loading the PM Invasion Force on January 2nd with D-Day set for January 7th.

Philippines
Luzon is now being taken from both the North and South ends. The Allies have fallen back to Clark and Bataan with only 1 unit in Manila. Looks like Mike will not try to come out and fight. Too bad--I am/was pretty vulnerable to a forward defense.

Mindanao is now completely taken with the except on one base on the western tip and base to the east of Cagayan. This place should fall tomorrow as I have a Regiment who just moved into the hex.

All the remaining Japanese CVs have been disbanded at Davao for a couple of days. I re-size a Zero unit and will do so to another Zero, then a Val, and then a Kate. While Kaga is doing this I form-up Akagi, Ryujo, Shoho, Zuiho, and Hosho with a strong escort of 3 CA, 2 CL, 1 CS, and 9 DD to start a move due south and see what might be happening around Timor.

Eastern DEI
I begin eastern operations by landing on Manado on the 29th and take it on the 30th.

Morotai is invaded on the 30th and taken on the 31st.

An Inf Reg, Base Force, and Artillery unit is loading and moving towards Amboina. This Invasion will be covered by 2 BB, 2 CA, 2 CL, and 8 DD. Add the KB-2 moving through the area and things are going to get hot fast in this region.

Central DEI
Have Tankers at Tarakan and Balikpapan loading oil. There is a Daitai of Zero and two Daitai of Betty present in Balikpapan. Currently planning on starting to load troops for a landing at Makassar scheduled for January 7th.

Western DEI/Java
I've pulled my TF out of this area to avoid more sinkings by Allied SS. This move isn't truly accomplished until I lose an AO and an I-Boat to Allied SS! There are at least 15 present in these waters.

I'm continuing to learn the game. I had three Daitai of Betty-Nell on 50% ASW, Range 10 at 1,000 Ft, and Search 30% when I realized I have the ability to direct the ASW Search.

Hee-Hee! Narrow the Arc to the point I've got a good number of planes flying in a restricted area and the reports of SS hits began pouring in! The 30th sees two hits and the 31st catches three. I don't care if they sink but I do hope to send them to the yards. That is victory enough.

Surprisingly Michael has abandoned Batavia. My troops moved into the hex this turn and next turn will take it. How about that?!! The TF at Merak will pick-up troops and supplies and immediately move them to this far superior base. Everyone will move east and I don't plan on endangering any more shipping until the issue is decided.

Malaya
This area continues looking good. Am about to take Malacca by two TK Reg. It has a very small unit guarding it. Once it falls I will move all the troops at Taiping (still in Strategic Mode) down the RR to this base and begin the approach march to Singers...

Singapore has had its planes taken out of it. I did a Sweep on the 31st and met nothing. The bombers will begin the bombing campaign starting tomorrow.

Home Islands
Expand the Ha-32 and Ha-35 plants for engine production. Not enough of them with the expanded Japanese Naval Aircraft industry.

This is a serious oversight and the Mark 2 RA Mod will have the engines at appropriate levels at the start of the war. We knew it would be bad but I don't think we foresaw it was actually critical. Lesson learned there!

Michael and I have decided to do a re-start with the Mark Two Reluctant Admiral's release coming up.

Time has been at a premium with my boys home and getting a promotion into Management at the hotel I work for so the AAR fell by the wayside. Had a sneaking feeling we would look at the re-start and so I let things go. Will probably start a new AAR with that and describe the changes, additions, and upgrades to the Mod at that point.

Status: offline 		As many readers know we ran into issues with the Mark One Version of RA. Every Chinese unit started the war at full strength! Very bad. We decided to go through and make modifications that developed into a full scale revamp of the Mod. We just released the Mark Two Version and Michael and I will start start all over again.

Hoping to send Turn One tomorrow night or Tuesday. Pends on the work schedule...

The new Version comes along with a batch of changes for the Allied player. Here are some of them:

The Allied Player gets new toys and I think Michael will explain that there a several major choices beginning Dec 7th that could have a major impact on the Japanese movements South and Southeast. Changes:

A. There are two reinforcement convoys:

1. American Convoy at Pago Pago with 10,000 Supply, a Marine Defense Bat, small Base Force, and an AO with 8,000 fuel. This TF is escorted by a CL and 3 DD.

2. Port Moresby Reinforcement TF: contains the remaining two Inf Bat to create the larger Brigade at PM, a Base Force, 10,000 Supply, 6,000 Fuel. Escorting them are a CA and 3 CL forming the ANZAC Force. They start in the hex due South of the C in Coral Sea on the map.

B. Townsville: There is also a Hudson, Wirraway, and Floatplane Squadron at Townsville ready for deployment.

C. The Americans gain the ability convert several AOs to CVE in 1942 if wanted.

D. The Independence-Class CVL comes in 3 months early (March-April 1943) with two additional CVLs added to the class.

E. American Navy gains a VF, VB, and VT Training Squadron at San Diego. They can expand to 36 (or maybe 48) planes and they will allow for American Naval Training similar to what the Japanese can do.

F. Some shipping is moved from the IO to Cape Town to facilitate a quicker British Empire reaction.

Those are most of the Allied changes. Should make things a lot more interesting for the BOTH players now.
