Central Pacific: Sigint report entry for 1/13 indicates 5 JAAF AF Bn is now on Tarawa. Previous location of this LCU was Tokyo (its starting location for the game).

Sigint report for 1/13 also indicates heavy Jap radio transmission activity at Kwajalein.


South Pacific: xAK Mangola torpedoed and sunk between Suva and Pago Pago by Jap submarine identified as I-10. xAK Mangola was not carrying cargo at the time it was sunk.

Sigint report for 1/13 again has multiple entries indicating continued heavy Jap radio transmission activity at Truk.


New Guinea: Jap bombers (G4M Betty) continue attacking Port Moresby airfield. Current status of Port Moresby base – runway damage 32, airfield service damage 30, no port damage.

** Most elements of the 2/15 Punjab Bn at Sambas have been picked up by Do-24 patrol floatplanes and airlifted into Palembang to reinforce Allied ground defenses there. Allied ground forces defending Palembang has been reinforced to an assault strength of approx 125, with Dutch LCU’s representing another 50 or so assault strength located at outlying bases that could possibly be airlifted to Palembang from those locations as time allows. Fortifications in Palembang have been built to level 2 and expected to reach level 3 shortly. A total of 43 engineer squads are now in Palembang to construct fortifications and perform demolition of oil & resource production and refinery facilities. These preparations are not so much expected to ward off the expected Japanese assault as to require some effort on Pillager’s part to capture Palembang. A second objective is turning Palembang and what’s in it to scorched earth once it falls.

Similar preparations are underway in Soerabaja.

As much of this activity as possible is being performed while the relatively quiet level of activity in the DEI continues. Overall Allied strategy in the DEI at this point in the campaign is (1) focusing the defense around key locations, (2) forcing the Japanese to expend as much time and effort as possible to seize these locations, and (3) maximize demolition of economic resources (particularly oil & resource production, refineries) using whatever is available.


Malaya: Kuantan captured by Jap forces, completing the Japanese conquest of mainland portions of Malaya. AAR follows.

68 Jap LCU’s now detected in Johore Bahru base hex, increase of four from last game turn. 19 detected Jap LCU’s are located at Mersing.

Nearly all British ground forces in Malaya successfully reached Johore Bahru and subsequently Singapore. Other than LCU’s participating in the recent defense of Johore Bahru, British combat ground units are in relatively good shape. Those British units fighting at Johore are resting and refitting as much as remaining time allows.

Current Allied ground assault strength in Singapore is 738, with 53 K supply on hand. Fortifications in Singapore are built to level 3 with an outside chance of getting them to level 4 before the Japanese attack begins.

Light Jap bombing raid on Singapore airfield, also a ground attack strike. Little or no damage or Allied casualties reported.


Burma: One Japanese LCU detected in Moulmein. No indication of any Jap ground advance from Moulmein towards Rangoon.

US West Coast: Damaged BB Nevada (system damage 24, float damage 25, eng 5) arrived this game turn on the US West Coast as part of return transport convoy BW-1. BB Nevada will complete shipyard repair and 1/42 ship upgrade on the US West Coast.

With the arrival of BB Nevada in the mainland US, only two heavily damaged US BB’s (West Virginia and California) remain at Pearl Harbor, both these ships expected to remain in shipyard at Pearl for an extended time.

Six US Bagley Class DD’s arriving as escorts with convoy BW-1 are temporarily remaining on the West Coast to complete 1/42 ship upgrades.

US West Coast: Escorts from outbound transport convoy WB-2 engage Jap submarine identified as I-17 off San Francisco. I-17 was unable to launch an attack on the convoy. The AAR of this action shows no hits on the I-17.


Wake Is: Reporting quiet. No detected Japanese ship movements around Wake Is this game turn.

Supply status on Wake is now 36 supply points remain on hand (increased from last game turn’s 20). Apparently the Marines found some stray coconuts as there is no other explanation for the increase in supply.


Solomon Is: Japanese capture Munda. AAR follows.

Sigint report entry for 1/15 indicates Japanese 63rd Division is located in Peiping and this unit has been formed by combining its sub-units (6 and 15 Independent Infantry Brigades).

This Sigint entry shows Pillager appears to be continuing the practice of combining small Japanese LCU’s (sub-units) into their larger parent formations. Several previous Sigint report entries and combat AAR’s have indicated where Pillager has been active in forming other large Japanese formations by combining their sub-units.

Solomon Is: Force N made a full-speed run into Munda in an unsuccessful attempt to attack Japanese ships that were unloading at Munda. Malaya: Increased Jap bombing strikes against Singapore followed by the first Jap ground assault on Singapore. Ground combat AAR follows.

Some of the defending British LCU in Singapore were still recovering disabled elements from the previous action at Johore Bahru. This time against Pillager, I attempted an alternate strategy of defending Singapore using Johore Bahru as an outer perimeter of the Singapore land defenses, basically employing a “two hex” defense of Singapore rather than a “one hex” defense of Singapore base hex itself. The "two hex" defense also operating on the premise a Japanese amphibious landing into Singapore is unlikely if not totally unfeasible.

The most notable pitfall of the “two hex” defense strategy is the risk of exhausting most or all the combat strength of British combat LCU’s at Johore Bahru, leaving them unable to effectively participate in defending Singapore itself. My attempted solution to this was a “compromise”, only defending Johore with part of my British land combat strength, leaving the remainder as a backstop inside Singapore. I suspect in the final analysis of the battle that the “compromise” solution does not make a significant difference.

Another possibility considered was attempting to fortify Johore base hex. However, the rate of Japanese ground advance down the Malayan peninsula would usually allow little or no opportunity for fortifying Johore and also takes British engineer elements away from building fortifications in Singapore itself. I ended up passing on this option and moved all the engineers into Singapore and built fortifications there – as it was, they managed to build level 3 forts in Singapore with the time and material available.

The one advantage I could see to a “two hex” defense of Singapore is that there's a small chance of prolonging the time required for the Japanese to capture Singapore and inflict additional attrition/disruption on attacking Jap LCU’s. Provided, of course, the British can withdraw most or all of their combat ground forces into Johore and Singapore intact (as I was able to) and “Lady Luck” is running against the Japanese player.

In my last CHS match with Pillager, I employed the “one hex” strategy and lost Singapore at the end of 1/42. My predicted outcome of the “two hex” strategy this time is probably not much better if it is better at all. Had to try something different. With Pillager throwing something on the order of 70 Jap LCU’s into the attack on Singapore, the advantages and drawbacks of concentrating that much force in one location is open to a discussion of its own. The Japanese supply requirements for the Singapore attack have to be enormous, just for all the LCU’s alone.

The following items were discovered during a subsequent recording of Japanese LCU location and OOB information from the 1/16 game turn Sigint and AAR reports. Both items relate to two full-size Jap divisions Pillager formed by combining their sub-units.

Malaya: Sometime after the fall of Johore Bahru and prior to starting the attack on Singapore, Pillager formed the Jap 48th Division for its sub-units (1 & 2 Formosa Rgts, 47 Infantry Rgt, 48 Recon Rgt, 48 Engineer Rgt, 48 FA Rgt). 2 Formosa Rgt had been formed some time earlier from its sub-units (Kanno & Tanaka Detachments).


Kwantung Army: A Sigint report entry for 1/16 indicates Jap 20th Division is located at Keijo, apparently also indicating 20th Division's sub-units (78, 79, 80 Infantry Rgts; 20 Recon Rgt, 20 Engineer Rgt, 26 FA Rgt) were combined to form the parent LCU (20 Division). My initial "educated guess" at the rationale behind this action is that 20th Division could be earmarked for eventual transfer to China.

Status: offline 		The Big Picture #7 – LCU Unit Organization & Combining Sub-Units

It’s becoming apparent from what has been seen on a series of Sigint and AAR report entries that Pillager and I are taking different philosophies on combining LCU sub-units into parent formations.

My primary emphasis in this discussion is mainly the following topics.

• Why and when would you want to do it in AE? Or wouldn’t want to do it?
• Advantages and disadvantages.

My interests in this discussion lie more in the two preceding topics rather than the merits (or lack thereof) of how AE handles this or the mechanics of combining and dividing LCU’s (which I assume we’re all equally familiar with).

Any discussion from readers is welcome from either an Allied or Japanese perspective (both equally so as far as I’m concerned), also players’ opinions, preferences and personal experience on the subject.


Starting thoughts – what changed in AE:

One significant difference between WitP and AE is that in the starting OOB’s, many units on both sides that existed as large (mostly division size) LCU’s in WitP now exist as a group of named sub-units in AE. Often sub-units of a parent (brigade or divisional) formation are scattered and in some cases only some of a parent formation’s sub-units start the game on-map with other sub-units of the parent formation entering the game later as reinforcements.

In effect… many LCU’s that start the game in WitP as parent (division and brigade) formations now appear in AE as their battalion and regiment size sub-units.


Are there really advantages to combining a large formation starting the game as sub-units into their parent unit?

Apparently, in at least some cases, Pillager’s answer to this question would be “Yes”. Perhaps creating large formations could at least sometimes be a benefit from the Japanese point of view.

I’ll add these questions for readers…

Why and when would you want to create the parent formation from its sub-units?

Is there a bonus making the “whole” (parent formation) greater than the sum of its “parts” (sub-units) when combining sub-units into a parent formation?

Something else to keep in mind… Creating a large formation from its sub-units is not permanent. A large formation created from its sub-units can be readily divided back into sub-units later on.


Early Allied strategy and my own point of view:

What I’ve done so far is to note unit organizations that exist among the different Allied LCU’s now in the game, especially for US ground units and several British, Australian and Indian divisions.

My “school of thought” so far has been to leave Allied sub-units as they are, not combining them into parent formations unless (and until) a specific reason exists for doing so.

Part of my planning process being done to deploy US (and to some extent other Allied) LCU’s includes a number of steps.

1) Identify the parent formations (US and Allied divisions) that exist.

2) Identify the LCU’s that are sub-units in the unit organizations for each parent formation. This includes both LCU’s for sub-units currently on-map and sub-units due to enter the game later as reinforcements.

3) Determine the theatre (South Pacific, SW Pacific, etc) where each parent formation (division) is planned or likely to be employed.

4) Plan routing and movement of all sub-units in the unit organization of a parent formation so that all sub-units of a parent formation are in the same theatre of operations and LCU’s for all sub-units of a parent formation are physically located within proximity of each other in the event it’s desired to combine them into their parent formation.

Advantages (as I see it) to keeping sub-units as they are include.

• Ease of transport. Large parent formations are more readily transported as sub-units, allowing more flexible use of transport ships (and fewer ships at a time).
• Stacking limits on many islands (especially smaller ones) do not permit deployment of parent formations without penalty. Especially true in the Pacific theatres.

In general, Allied parent formations will be brought into forward areas as their component sub-units. The sub-units of each parent formation will be deployed as much as possible in location(s) where they can be easily collected and combined to create the parent formation when and as needed.

Advantages (as I see it) to keeping sub-units as they are include.

• Ease of transport. Large parent formations are more readily transported as sub-units, allowing more flexible use of transport ships (and fewer ships at a time).
• Stacking limits on many islands (especially smaller ones) do not permit deployment of parent formations without penalty. Especially true in the Pacific theatres.



Read Andy Mac's AAR where he discusses the issue of reconstitution versus keeping the sub units in the light of his failure to hold Darwin with the 3 bdes of Brit 18th division. His conclusion, which I think is certainly correct for British/Commonwealth units, is that even if the 3 bdes of a division are at the same location, the overall combat power is greatly reduced. This is for two reasons, firstly the losses are not evenly spread out throughout the entire "parent unit" but tend to be concentrated on a bde. As a result of disproportionate casualties, morale losses/disorganisation is multiplied and the sub unit becomes hors d'combat. Secondly the divisional artillery is only efficiently brought into combat when supported by the infantry of the entire division.

As you have noted above, there are some advantages to keeping the sub units separated. However I don't think those advantages are that important. In fact, if one adopts their rationale, there is a great risk of committing mistakes. My reasoning is as follows.

(1) Stacking limits. There are enough independent RCTs to garrison the strategically important, but limited garrison islands. These islands tend to have small ports so it is preferable to send only small convoys but you can always use Amphibious TF if you need to transport a large unit. In any case, small islands are not good festungs as they can always be overwhelmed by a determined opponent, hence you should only ever have expendable units there. IMHO, losing a third of a USMC division on one of these islands is not a good outcome.

(2) Ease of transport. A full division can be easily sent to middle sized ports which unrestricted islands tend to have as a minimum. Also the threat of enemy subs means that large and well protected troop convoys are required, irrespective of the size of the combat unit being transported. Unlike classical WITP. the ability in AE to merge TFs is a very valuable feature. This allows for the shorter legged escorts to be allocated their own escort zones where they meet and hand over their charges to the next escort zone.

Status: offline 		If the lcu's components are low morale/exp I like to combine them under a good commander (especially 1stBurma). There aren't a lot of good commanders available in the beginning for the allies, it's best to maximize their effect.

Appreciate both your feedback. I was completely unaware of the effects for uncombined sub-units in combat. That is something I will certainly have to keep in mind especially when these LCU are in or near front-line areas.

After seeing anarchy's post, I will have to look more closely at low experience/morale British and Commonwealth LCU's, particularly those now being withdrawn from Burma and also Australian LCU's stationed in Australia. In the case of Australia I'll have to sift through all the Australian units and concentrate sub-units of parent formations together as much as possible at bases in Australia. If true for New Zealand, will need to be done there too. I have transferred several Australian Bns and a number of New Zealand LCU into South Pacific command and shipped them out to occupy some key forward island bases along with US troops arriving in the South Pacific theatre. Hopefully these deployments did not result in dispersal of LCU's in a parent formation.

LCU's withdrawing out of Burma and those remaining in Burma as the rear-guard are gonna be pretty badly jumbled up and more difficult to sort out. Some of these units were evacuated by sea to Calcutta, others are now leaving Burma by overland march and well on their way to India, still others remain in Burma to fight a rear-guard action. It's very likely it will be some before these LCU can be sifted out into parent formations and almost certain that some of these sub-units will see combat independently before I have any opportunity to reunite them with other LCU's of their parent formations.

Otherwise, I have sub-units of several British and Commonwealth parent formations (notably 18 British Division, 7 British Armoured Brigade, 6 Australian Division plus an Indian Division) that are still in separate sub-units but deployed together where they can be very quickly combined into the parent formation. All these parent formations had been dispatched to Ceylon or India for the time being.

Most of the Australian sub units are either infantry Bdes which can be merged into the 5 CMF divisions or sub units of Base Forces. As such they have some substance to them even if kept separate. There are only a few Bn sized sub units which can be combined. Keep an eye out for:

(a) the Bns in Western Australia which make up 13th Bde,
(b) the Bns found in Australia and Papua New Guinea which make up SWPac's 30th Bde,
(c) the various units found in Malaya, Darwin and Papua which make up 8th AIF Div.

Later in 1942 you will get company sized sub units which really have to be combined to get any combat value out of them.

The New Zealand situation is quite different to the Australian situation. There you have only Bn sized units which can be combined. In AE, Bns are almost useless for combat purposes as they have no staying power. For example, Fiji starts off with a New Zealand garrison of a Bde. But the Bde is split up into its three Bns, one at Nadi and the other two at Suva. Look at their AV - if combined they present some substance, but kept separate, the sole Bn at Nadi is not going to stop too many Japanese Naval Guard units, let alone a full Imperial division.

Thanks and good thing I asked...

As far as the Australian 8 AIF Division is concerned, I may have to consider evacuating cadres of 22 & 27 Australian Brigades via submarine transport from Singapore in the time I have left if there's any possibilty of creating this division in the future (however distant). I extensively evacuated full LCU's and cadres in my CHS game with Pillager but haven't done much of it so far in our AE match, mainly due to restricted commands in AE and a change in how I've been using US fleet submarines at this point in the game (last time I was using them mainly as transports for evacuation, this time they're out on patrol). Might have to re-think at least some of that. I'm forming plans to remove at least some of the small LCU's in Papua by air to mainland Australia - presumably including some Australian 8 AIF sub-units. No matter what, it will likely take a considerable amount of time, replacement elements and effort to make Australian 8 AIF Division a useable entity.

Same possibly goes for 30 Australian Brigade.

Collecting sub-units of 13 Australian Brigade should not be difficult. Most if not all of them should still be in the area.


Your information on NZ could be the most valuable. So far unmentioned are plans that are well underway to defend as much of a bridgehead as I can in the Japanese outer perimeter line (Port Moresby - Noumea- Fiji - Samoa - Canton Is) that Pillager set up in our last match. Plans are to make the bridgehead's area as large as possible given the forces already available in the area and reinforcements I can get there in whatever time I have (along with stocks of supply and fuel).

Oddly enough, this bridgehead is centered around Suva and supporting positions on nearby islands with Auckland as its staging area. The NZ garrisons in both Suva itself and Nadi are already reinforced with LCU's drawn from a variety of locations (other NZ units, several Australian Bns, some US units) with fortifications under construction since 12/8/41. Other Allied LCU's are enroute to Suva or about to be. Forming another NZ brigade from units already on Fiji might be very useful here.

I'll also have to "inventory" the NZ ground forces still in New Zealand to figure out what parent formation(s) can be created from those before dispatching any more.

As you specifically identified 8 AIF in post #104 I comment on that "placeholder" parent unit but the comment applies equally well to all other "placeholder" parent units in AE.

In classical WITP, if you divided a division into /A, /B and /C, you could only recombine back if all three subunits existed with the same TOE. Evacuation of cadres was essential in order to rebuild a unit. These considerations do not apply in AE for the purposes of combining sub units into the parent "placeholder" unit.

The "placeholder" 8th AIF division can be built even if you completely lose the 22nd and 27th Bdes in Malaya and have not saved cadres from those two bdes. The 8th AIF can be built whenever all the existing on map sub units are co-located. The strength of the 8th results from how many (and their strength) of those subunits. The complete 8th ensues if you combine 22nd Bde, 27th Bde, Gull Force, Sparrow Force etc. A much weaker 8th ensues if you only have Gull, Sparrow etc alive. Hence the more of 22nd and 27th bdes you save, the stronger 8 AIF will be on creation but the "placeholder" parent can be created even if the two bdes in Malaya are completely lost.

You therefore may not have to alter your usuage of Allied subs in order to rescue sub units from Malaya. Also note that in AE use of Allied subs for transporting LCUs is very restricted compared to classical WITP.

I'd say the good news here is that 8 Australian Division can be built regardless of what I get out of Singapore (and it won't be much), the bad news is that it will be expensive in terms of time and replacement elements. A long-term project to make a long story short. At this time I have the three battalions safely inside Allied lines (Gull and Sparrow at Darwin, Lark was pulled out of Rabaul intact and dispatched into the Suva bridgehead). I'm still going ahead with plans to extract whatever elements of 22 and/or 27 Brigades I can get out of Singapore before its demise on the premise that every squad of 8 Division I manage to collect in Australia (or wherever) is one less squad needed from the replacement pools.

I have 3-4 US fleet subs now operating in the DEI that could be detached to evacuate a few elements of the Australian brigades to Australia and could also any use Dutch subs that can be spared from patrol operations. Plans would be to extract squads of the Australian brigades from Singapore by air via Palembang and Batavia, then loading subs and getting them to Australia. A small problem being that there are no (surviving) Allied transport ships in the DEI and likely not possible to get any there safely given nearly all the DEI is now within striking range of Jap LBA (Nells & Bettys) not to mention the Baby KB. Get a cadre of either 22 or 27 Brigade (or both) to Australia and rebuilding the cadre(s) would be a first step in a long-term project of constructing 8 Australian Division.

Another Allied parent formation that could be "sticky" is 2 Marine Division. One of its sub-units (8 Marine Rgt) is already in the Suva bridgehead, another sub-unit (2 Marine Rgt) is leaving for Suva shortly. A third regiment of 2 Marine Division is due to arrive as a reinforcement in about 115 days and a USMC Engineer Rgt from 2 Division is now at Pearl Harbor. My course on 2 Marine Division appears to be dispatching its elements to the South Pacific theatre and building the parent formation of the division there.

I very quickly noticed the restrictions on using Allied subs for LCU transport - this actually being one of my two main reasons for changes in early-war Allied sub operations from what I had done in CHS. The other reason being increased sub patrols inside the Japanese lines to detect and intercept Pillager's transport and naval movements (particularly the KB).


Ed Note: My reference to the Suva bridgehead reflects plans now well underway to defend not only Suva itself but also a modest line of island bases screening the (close-in) eastern approaches to both Suva and Auckland. The short-term intent is creating a concentrated defense to hold as much ground as possible within this immediate area given the resources now on hand and additional reinforcements (US, Australian and NZ) that can arrive in the time available. Longer-term plans for this bridgehead is that it will form the "core territory" of the South Pacific theatre.

Mainland US: A total of 62 USAAF fighter pilots in on-map flight training since 12/8/41 were transferred into the general pilot reserve from four USAAF fighter squadrons (one a HQ unit) scheduled for withdrawal in the next few game turns. The transferred pilots had been replaced with (62) green replacements. The pilots were taken from USAAF squadrons due for withdrawal shortly and do not have a scheduled date for later re-entry into the game. The transferred pilots now have an average pilot experience of 45-50 or so with air-to-air proficiency ratings in the 60’s. Plans are to transfer these pilots from the general reserve into other USAAF fighter squadrons to continue on-map training.


Game question: I haven't found any discussion on this particular topic... When withdrawing from the game an air unit with a scheduled withdrawal date that is also scheduled to re-enter the game later, does that air unit return to the game (at the scheduled return date) with the same group of pilots that were in the squadron at the time it was withdrawn?

(i.e. a squadron with a scheduled withdrawal date of 6/42 and a return date of 6/43 is withdrawn from the game. Does that squadron return to the game in 6/43 with the same pilots it had when it was withdrawn in 1942?)

An airlift of elements from 27 Australian Brigade from Singapore is being started to extract a cadre of this unit for eventual rebuilding of 8 Australian Division. A force of ten Dutch Do-24 and PBY patrol floatplanes are flying into Singapore to pick up elements of 27 Brigade and transport them to Java via Palembang. Plans are to transport elements of the 27 Brigade from Java to Australia by submarine.

If possible, a cadre of elements from 22 Australian Brigade will later be extracted from Singapore in a similar manner.

I don't keep records on individual pilots so I can't give you a definitive answer but my experience is that firstly when I hover the mouse over the withdraw button for these units (ie those scheduled to return) the mouseover states that pilots and planes go to the pool and secondly when for my training units I request veteran pilots in order to continue with their interrupted training, I find in the General Reserve pilots with very low stats. These pilots I assume to be the rookies I had put into withdrawing units in order to extract the partially trained pilots just before I withdraw the unit.

I had been hoping (whether I would get my wish or not is another story) for a scenario where pilots that had been in training with a withdrawing squadron would remain with the squadron after it left the game and the squadron would retun later basically the same way as it was when it left. Though now (on second thought) I can easily see how the game mechanics would do it as you're describing.

Actually for withdrawing squadrons, it appears the best course might be to keep the trained pilots with a withdrawing squadron when taking it out of the game as the pilots will go into the general replacement pool anyway - rather than moving the trained pilots from the withdrawing squadron into the general pool yourself. It also seems from this that not manually transferring trained pilots from a withdrawing squadron to the general pool would prevent dumping a bunch of rookie pilots (the ones brought in to replace the trained pilots) into the general pool when the squadron is withdrawn.

My intent had been to use the general pilot replacement pool as a "reservoir" of pilots that had completed various stages of on-map training with air units (keeping rookie pilots out of this pool). From the general pilot replacement pool, I had been planning to draw trained pilots from it into (1) front-line combat squadrons or (2) another rear-area squadron to resume their on-map pilot training. The benefit of keeping rookie pilots out of the replacement pool is primarily a housekeeping one - having pilots sorted out according to their training status and readiness for use in front-line combat ops.

Again, appreciate your feedback.

US West Coast: An unescorted transport returning to the US West Coast reports attempted attack by a Jap submarine identified as the I-19 southwest of San Francisco. An ASW escort had departed to meet the transport and provide an escort through the final approach into San Francisco – the escort did meet the transport following the sub attack and merged with it four hexes out from San Francisco.

Current US ASW practice is to provide a temporary ASW screen to otherwise unescorted individual transports while they are moving through sea areas within 4-5 hexes of the US West Coast. This practice is done either as an attached escort to departing transport(s) until they are beyond the 4-5 hex range, or sending an ASW escort to merge with incoming transport(s) approaching the 4-5 hex range from the coast. Location of the Jap sub attack (hex 214,78) was eight hexes SW of San Francisco, outside the present ASW screening range from the US West Coast.

At this point, it's believed the location of this particular Jap sub contact was more coincidental rather than a deliberate action by Pillager to station Jap sub patrols outside the 4-5 hex range. For now, my current practice for these ASW escorts hasn’t been employed to the extent or the frequency where Pillager could have established a pattern.

It appears from this action that Tulagi is Pillager’s likely next target for Japanese southward expansion in the SW Pacific area. Current position of Force N is within striking range of Tulagi with plans to engage Jap transports attempting an amphibious operation at Tulagi (which can reasonably be expected shortly). While the presence of Force N will not prevent an eventual Japanese capture of Tulagi, I intend to make the fall of Tulagi a bit expensive for Pillager if at all possible.

My current practice up to now for training squadrons has been to bring them up to 100% of their nominal pilot strength with all pilots set active, regardless of the number of planes on hand in the squadrons. (i.e. a squadron with a nominal full strength of 25 pilots will contain 25 pilots) From the post in Cantona's thread, it's apparent I can "stock" these squadrons up to 133% of nominal strength and keep all these pilots active and presumably training. Placing additional rookie pilots into training squadrons will certainly increase the rate of my current pilot training in terms of the numbers of pilots. Given the hordes of unemployed rookie pilots available, this measure is certainly worth looking into in those instances where it can be done with no impact on other activities.

Other items in my current on-map pilot training practices include setting squadrons to 100% training mode and keeping them at the 100% level until average pilot fatigue level in a squadron reaches 30 or over. Once a squadron's pilot fatigue level goes over 30, the squadron is stood down and pilot fatigue allowed to reset to zero (usually in 4-5 days or less). Once pilots are completely rested, the squadron is again put on 100% training level and training resumed. All on-map squadrons in training mode (which most Allied squadrons are at this stage of the game) are monitored on a daily (game turn) basis. The result I am seeing from the 100% training level is all pilots in the squadron are actively training and showing increases in experience and/or assigned skill level(s).

It should also be said here that many squadrons (particularly in the mainland US) never undergo pilot fatigue.

All on-map pilot training is specialized, with the particular skill(s) set for a squadron dependent on the type of squadron (fighter, bomber, etc) and in some cases the anticipated role of the pilots in training and/or the squadron the pilots are in.

Carrier pilots, both US and British, are also involved in pilot training while their carriers are disbanded in port. Pilot training is also conducted for pilots in float plane detachments aboard cruisers and BB's disbanded in a port. Pilot training practices for ship-based pilots is conducted in a similar manner to their LBA cousins.

At least for the present... pilot training is the most aggressive part of the Allied air war.

Canada: A US transport ship (AK Virginian) was torpedoed and sunk off the northern tip of Vancouver Is by Jap submarine identified as I-4. AK Virginian had been moving independently together with a second AK and was bound from Juneau to Seattle with a cargo of 3200 resource. While the mainland US is not exactly hurting for resource points, there is apparently a modest level of resource production at Juneau along with a significant stockpile of resource points located there. AK Virginian was among a number of empty transports being sent to Juneau to load resource points stockpiled there before returning to the US mainland after completing assigned transport missions.


Canton Is: Operations report entries for 1/23 indicating unidentified Jap float and patrol planes (two contacts) flying over Canton Is. Detected status of Jap base on Baker Island is showing unspecified Jap planes based there – this is possibly the originating base of the Jap patrol plane flight over Canton.


Central Pacific: Sigint report entry for 1/23 indicates heavy volume of intercepted radio transmissions from Truk.


Suva: Three NZ Infantry Bns (29, 30, 34) combined into their parent formation of 8 NZ Brigade. Allied ground strength on Fiji now includes two NZ Brigades, five other Australian and NZ Infantry Bns, a US Field Artillery Rgt, four US and NZ base force LCU’s and an NZ Engineer company. Total Allied assault strength in Suva proper (excluding Nadi) is now at 300 with fortifications in Suva base built to level 3.

Allied ground formations (mainly US) also occupy nearby islands flanking Suva to the east and covering sea approaches into Suva from the south (i.e. Auckland).

Status: offline 		The Big Picture #8 – Singapore, the post-mortem

Compared to our previous CHS match, Singapore fell to the Japanese eight days earlier in AE (1/24 vs 2/1). Some factors and contrasts between the fall of Singapore in our previous CHS match vs events in our current AE game are covered in the discussion below.

The first group of factors I cover here are differences between our games in CHS and AE where at first glance improved conditions with these factors for the Allies in our current AE game would have improved prospects for a longer defense of Singapore but did not do so in the final analysis. In general, for each of the first group of factors the Allied situation was better in our AE game compared to the equivalent situation in our previous CHS match. What I’m suspecting is any benefit the British defenders in Singapore could have received from improved conditions in our AE game for the first group of factors were cancelled out (and likely more than cancelled out) by a set of more unfavorable circumstances created this time in AE from the second group of factors described below.

1) Allied supply situation: In our previous CHS match, the fall of Singapore coincided with the almost total depletion of supply points on hand for the Allied defenders in Singapore – this in contrast to the 48K supply that was still on hand in Singapore when the city fell in AE.

2) More British LCU’s were successfully withdrawn into Singapore this time in our AE game compared to CHS.

3) Fortifications: Construction of fortifications in Singapore were immediately started on 12/8/41 in Singapore. This had not been done at all in CHS.

The second group of factors I now cover likely accelerated the Allied collapse in Singapore in our AE game compared to compared to what previously occurred in our CHS match.

4) The “two-hex” strategy for defending Singapore: The “two-hex” defense of Singapore (Johore Bahru and Singapore) I conducted in AE likely shortened the overall defense of Singapore compared to the “one-hex” defense of Singapore itself I did in CHS. Committing part of the British ground forces to defending Johore Bahru as an outer defense line for Singapore (and the losses taken by these LCU while holding Johore) in the end significantly weakened the total assault strength of British forces defending Singapore itself once the Japanese captured Johore and the British units holding Johore were pushed back into Singapore. The bottom line is that Pillager captured two hexes more quickly in AE than it took for him to capture a single hex in CHS.

5) Pillager launching a stronger Japanese attack on Singapore: Compared to our previous CHS match, Pillager committed a larger portion of the total available Japanese ground forces into the Malayan campaign (and particularly the actions at Mersing, Johore and Singapore itself). Pillager deployed at Singapore from Formosa a large number of the Jap LCU’s that were otherwise allocated to the Philippines, opting not to make any significant invasion of the Philippines at all.

6) Percival as Malaya commander-in-chief: This time in AE, I left Percival in command of British forces in Malaya. In CHS I had replaced Percival with another commander and returned him to Singapore in the final days of that battle. Would replacing Percival have helped this time in AE? Probably would have.


The Bottom Line: Except for Pillager delaying a major invasion of the Philippines, the overall strategic situation this time in our AE game fairly closely resembles events that occurred in our last CHS match through the end of 1/42 with minor exceptions. In particular, Pillager’s Japanese advance into the DEI, Burma, New Guinea and the Solomons in the two games match pretty closely.

DEI: Japanese landing operations are now underway at Bandjermasin (southern Borneo). Two Jap LCU’s were detected coming ashore in Bandjermasin. The Jap landing has forced transfer of Dutch bombers based at Bandjermasin to airfields on Java – these planes had been attacking Jap controlled oil facilities in Balikpapan and Samarinda. Withdrawal of the Dutch bombers to Java has ended most Allied air attacks to inflict additional damage on oil facilities at Balikpapan and Samarinda as these bases are now beyond the striking range of the Dutch level bombers.

The two British ML’s escaping Singapore have reached Muntok and are now proceeding to Java.


Philippines: The five remaining US S-class submarines in the Philippines are being recalled to base from patrol areas off the west and north coasts of Luzon for refueling in preparation for orders dispatching these submarines southward to the DEI (probably Soerabaja) and eventually Australia.

With the fall of Singapore and current situation in the DEI, measures to move US S-class subs from the Philippines need to be considered at this time. Japanese control of the DEI would isolate these subs in the Philippines beyond the range of other Allied refueling bases within their movement radius (4000 mi).

A number of longer range US fleet subs still remain in the Philippines. These boats are less of a concern as they have sufficient range to reach Australia or Hawaii provided they are kept adequately refueled.

What cannot be determined at this moment is whether the KB’s appearance off Canton is a prelude to a Japanese landing on Canton, or if Pillager is sending the KB on a sweep of Allied shipping routes between the US and Australia/New Zealand. How Pillager moves the KB in the next game turn or two will provide considerable insight into his immediate plans with the KB in this area.

Considering the number and concentration of Japanese TF’s, it can reasonably be assumed for the moment that Pillager has deployed all the KB fleet carriers in a single group of TF’s. This being true, the AAR’s could be showing that Pillager is keeping much of the KB’s air strength in reserve, either to deal with US naval forces and/or launch air strikes against any Allied shipping targets he can find.

No Allied transport ships or convoys are currently moving through or approaching the Canton Is area, though re-routing precautions have been taken for a small US transport convoy now located (farther to the) ESE of Canton where an unidentified Jap submarine near Penhryn Is has been detected along its movement path. No point in giving Pillager any unnecessary hints.

Allied shipping in the Samoa/Fiji area is also on alert. If Pillager is making a sweep against Allied shipping in the South Pacific with the KB, Pago Pago is the KB’s most likely next destination.


Central Pacific: Sigint report entries for 1/27 indicating Jap radio signal activity from Truk and several locations in the Marshall Is (Wotje, Roi-Namur).


Australia: Japanese LBA (9 G4M Betty) bombing attack on Darwin airfield. Minor damage (runway 4, airfield service 4) damage reported. Seven Jap bombers reported hit by flak.


DEI: CL Sumatra safely departed Soerabaja and now moving southward in the open sea for Perth. CL Sumatra entered the game as a reinforcement in Soerabaja on 1/26.

Japanese CVL task force operating in the western Java Sea off Batavia, launches several unsuccessful naval air strikes against British ML’s now at Merak (Java). Current position of CVL task force is now off Billiton moving on a NW heading out of the Java Sea area.

Jap mine sweeping operations reported in Balikpapan.

Detected status of Balikpapan base – oil production 272(29), refinery 300(1), airfield damage 16, port damage 1, 66 aircraft (37 fighters), 5 Jap LCU’s.

Only five USAAF B-17 bombers (3 operational) remain in the DEI. Plans under consideration are (1) rest them a game turn or two to recover damaged planes, then launch daylight air attacks against oil production in Balikpapan (while this expends the bombers, this is also my first, last and only effective opportunity to inflict significant damage on these oilfields for a long time), or (2) pull the bombers back to Australia.

With Banjermasin under Japanese ground attack, Balikpapan oilfields are no longer within attack range of Dutch LBA bombers.

Light Jap air bombing strikes reported against Dutch LCU’s in Bandjermasin and Palembang. Little or no damage or Allied casualties reported.


Philippines: Jap LBA air bombing strike against US ground units on Luzon. AAR follows.
