Summary of this game turn’s aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 1 A6M2-N Rufe (air-to-air)
• 1 A6M3 Zero (on the ground)
• 6 A6M3a Zero (3 air-to-air, 3 on the ground)
• 1 A6M5 Zero (ops)
• 3 N1K1-J George (all on the ground)
• 1 N1K1 Rex (air-to-air)

No reported Allied plane losses this game turn in theatre area.

No Japanese air raids on Port Moresby. KB has withdrawn – game map observations during the 1/02 game turn replay plus a number of 1/02 Sigint report indicated KB has possibly moved back into Manus, probably to replenish to whatever extent it can. I estimate it’s likely Pillager has parked one or more Japanese replenishment TF(s) at Manus. Detected status of Manus shows a port size of 2(4), airfield size 2(5) – if correct, existing base facilities in Manus alone not sufficient to support KB operations.

Allied night bombing strikes continue against Lae and Buna airfields, most planes reaching Buna. Latest AAR’s and Combat Events report entries follow.

Summary of Operations 1/02/44 (continued)

South Pacific: Current base status of Noumea – 381K supply and 92K fuel on hand. Construction to expand airfield in Noumea to its maximum 8(5) size expected to be complete next game turn, full expansion of port facilities from its current 5(4) size to begin immediately upon completion of the airfield. Additional engineer units to expand base facilities in Koumac are enroute to Noumea.

LCU preparations for assaults on objectives in the New Hebrides and Santa Cruz islands continue. Main focus of most current activity in the South Pacific theatre is pushing forward as much “stuff” as possible into Noumea and Suva.

Summary of Operations 1/03/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 260K, fuel 11K. Allied fighter squadrons in Port Moresby almost fully recovered – at or near full plane and pilot strength.

Summary of this game turn’s aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 2 A6M2-N Rufe (1 air-to-air, 1 ops)
• 4 A6M3 Zero (all on the ground)
• 5 A6M3a Zero (1 air-to-air, 3 on the ground, 1 ops)
• 1 N1K1-J George (on the ground)
• 2 Ki-61 Tony (both on the ground)

No reported Allied plane losses in theatre area.

No Japanese air raids on Port Moresby. KB is undetected. One reported contact between a US patrol sub and a B6N1 Jill air patrol near Manus (hex location 102, 121 SE of Manus) – this report indicating KB may still be in the area, possibly at Manus. There were several 1/03 coastwatcher reports (in South Pacific theatre ops summary below) indicating what could be possible KB task forces in Manus base hex. If Pillager does have KB parked in Manus, it’s likely most Japanese carrier air units are stood down to recover damaged planes and rest pilots. My estimate is that Pillager can refuel KB and replenish its carrier plane ops assuming Jap replenishment TF(s) are located in Manus and adequately stocked to do so. It’s less likely that Pillager has the ability to replace destroyed planes in the KB air groups or making significant ship repairs without returning to a larger base (i.e. Truk). If KB does return to attack Port Moresby within the next several game turns, it’s probably doing so with less than its full aircraft strength. Summary of Operations 1/03/44 (continued)

AE Beta version: This is our first game turn running AE under the Beta version. Pillager has a new computer running Windows 8.1 and apparently needed to install the beta to continue playing. I’m still running Windows 7 – the beta installed and ran with no problem. I’ll need to look at the change notes more closely at some point. I had some kind of intermittent bug with the old version that involved adding new pilots into air units where I had to occasionally had to do a save then quit, go back into the save menu and restart the game from where I left off during my orders phase when I could no longer add new pilots into an air unit that had capacity to receive new pilots (i.e. after transferring one or more pilots from a squadron into the reserve pool, the AE game program occasionally did not allow transfer of the same number of new pilots into that squadron without doing a save and restart). The air squadron in question did have capacity to receive additional pilots. It was an intermittent bug - annoying at times but I played along with it. I can go into this issue in more detail on request for anyone in the AE development community that’s interested in the event this bug is still an undetected problem.

Footnote on the bug I mentioned… I haven’t yet checked or looked for the “change notes” on the beta but it appears the beta could have resolved the bug I was describing above. Due to the intermittent nature of this particular bug, I’m going another game turn or two before it’s a final conclusion though it looks like a fix could have occurred.

You may want to look at this in your AI game or PBEM in progress if you’ve going to or already running the beta version. My (Allied) Operations report for this game turn indicated a larger than expected number of LCU where devices had been upgraded – some of these I had deliberately set to receive upgrades (Replacements and Upgrade both turned on), other units were receiving device upgrades (Upgrade turned on) even though they were not set to receive replacements (Replacements turned off). This situation did not appear to cause a great deal of damage in my replacement pools but it certainly caught my attention. You may want to review the upgrade status of all LCU’s to verify that Upgrade is turned on only for those LCU that you’re actually wanting to upgrade at this time. I did notice many LCU that had Upgrade turned on but do not have any element upgrades (this category including HQ’s and some engineer units) – these can just as well be turned off. Checking for this “problem” is relatively simple, all the ground unit listing displays show both the current Replacement and Upgrade settings of each LCU.

Summary of Operations 1/04/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 259K, fuel 11K, port size increased this game turn to 3(2).

Summary of this game turn’s aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

Summary of Operations 1/05/44 (continued)

East China Sea: US patrol subs active in East China Sea area. Japanese ASW air patrols do not appear to be active, Pillager may have transferred air units flying these patrols to other theatres. AAR’s follow.

Japanese Ships
xAK Sydney Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Dragonet

xAK Sydney Maru is sighted by SS Dragonet
SS Dragonet launches 2 torpedoes

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Central Pacific: Three 1/05 Sigint entries all reporting heavy volume of intercepted Jap radio transmissions from the same hex location (100, 102) at sea WNW of Woleai, plus a fourth 1/05 Sigint entry reporting heavy volume of Jap radio signals from Truk. No Allied patrol subs are currently operating near hex location 100, 102 – this location about 10 hexes outside (W of) the primary sea area around Truk where US patrol subs are operating. It is not certain how many of the Sigint entries are related to either the night or daylight portion of the 1/05 game turn. Three reports of intercepted Jap radio transmissions from the same sea hex location is a rare event, very likely indicating significant activity of Japanese TF(s) at sea in or near this hex.

US patrol sub in action with Jap surface ASW. My estimate is the Jap TF shown below is probably unrelated to the intercepted Jap radio signals above - distance between the two hex locations making any connection between the intercepted radio transmissions and the Jap DD (or ships escorted by the DD) in the AAR below very unlikely. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Mussau Island at 108,114 (daylight action, SW of Truk)

Japanese Ships
DD Yudachi
DD Shiratsuyu
DD Sagiri
DD Yamakaze

Allied Ships
SS Paddle

SS Paddle launches 4 torpedoes at DD Yudachi
Paddle diving deep ....
DD Sagiri fails to find sub and abandons search
DD Yamakaze attacking submerged sub ....

Escort abandons search for sub

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is some chance the KB may be involved with at least one of the above contacts though no additional information exists (at this time) to confirm or deny this possibility for either of the two contacts above.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – no Japanese ships in port, 4 TF (+4 from last report), 107 aircraft (all fighters), 12 Jap LCU’s (+1 from last report), light industry 9(32), refinery 96(105). Newly detected Japanese TF in Rangoon include minessweeping, light surface ASW and transports.

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – no information on Jap planes, 16 Jap LCU (-2 from last report), oil production 101(200), refinery 97(4).

US patrol sub (SS Flyer) hit and damaged in attack by Ki-49 Helen air patrol E of Shanghai (hex location 93, 57). Reported damage to SS Flyer – system 21, float 22, engine 5 – sub returning to base at 15 kts.

Formosa: US patrol sub (SS Archerfish) hit and damaged in attack by Ki-49 Helen air patrol E of Formosa (hex location 88, 68). Reported damage to SS Archerfish – system 57, float 27, engine 6 – sub returning to base at 14 kts.

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 1/06 reporting intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Majuro. Detected status of Majuro shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Australia: Transport convoy MX-24 (12 TK) arrives from Abadan via Capetown with 133K fuel cargo.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – no Japanese ships in port, 2 TF (-2 from last report), 125 aircraft (all fighters), 12 Jap LCU’s, light industry 9(32), refinery 96(105).

Japanese transport ship sunk by British patrol sub off the Andamans. It has been some amount of time since Allied patrol subs successfully intercepted Japanese merchant shipping moving to or from Rangoon – there’s little question Pillager is moving Jap transport shipping into and out of Rangoon given daily reports of Japanese TF in Rangoon and their fluctuation. What had been somewhat a mystery is the sea movement route used by Pillager for ships going to or from Rangoon. This AAR may have answered that question –Pillager moving his sea movement route away from the coast and farther out to sea. If true, this theory also accounts for discontinued Japanese surface ASW activity vs Allied patrol subs in the Andaman Sea area – Pillager could safely ignore my patrol subs if he was routing his Japanese transport TF around locations where my subs were. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submarine attack near Port Blair at 49,55 (NE of Port Blair)

Japanese Ships
xAK Zuiko Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage (sunk)

Allied Ships
SS Clyde

xAK Zuiko Maru is sighted by SS Clyde
SS Clyde launches 2 torpedoes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – no information on Jap planes, 15 Jap LCU (-1 from last report), oil production 102(199), refinery 97(4). The status is indicating Pillager is repairing oil production facilities in Magwe. I have no intelligence data at this time concerning any Jap LCU movements out of Magwe to other locations but this is being watched for. My estimate is that the decreased number of Jap LCU’s reported in Magwe may have some significance but not a major cause for alarm at least in the short term – until there is definite information about these LCU movements (what and to where) no accurate conclusion can be made or acted upon.

China: RAF and USAAF 4E bombers hit heavy industry facilities at Kunming in a night raid. One USAAF B-17E was lost (ops), no Jap planes encountered or destroyed. The raid appeared to have few if any bomb hits on Kunming city despite the lack of Japanese flak or CAP fighter opposition. Current detected status of Kunming reflects this – heavy industry 21(31), light industry 79(2), resources 61(0), manpower 3(0), 3 Jap aircraft (all fighters), 2 Jap LCU. Combat Events report entries and AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 1/07/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 257K, fuel 11K. Construction activity to expand port size continues.

Summary of this game turn’s aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 3 A6M3 Zero (all on the ground)
• 9 A6M3a Zero (6 air-to-air, 3 on the ground)
• 3 N1K1-J George (1 air-to-air, 2 on the ground)
• 1 N1K1 Rex (air-to-air)
• 1 Ki-61 Tony (on the ground)
• 6 P1Y1 Frances (all flak)

No reported Allied plane losses this game turn.

A group of US Marine dive bombing squadrons have been transferred to Australia from South Pacific theatre – Noumea airfield a convenient transit point for air units moving between South and SW Pacific theatre areas. Plans are to introduce the dive bombers into Port Moresby for fun-and-games with the KB when it returns. Dive bombers will also prove handy with interdiction of Japanese transport shipping at nearby bases around Port Moresby. Now that I have a large, virtually unsinkable size 9 aircraft carrier with an air HQ (soon to be two) and 580 air support squads available….

Japanese night bombing raid on Port Moresby airfield. No Allied planes hit or damaged on the ground, no reported damage to Port Moresby airfield. Intelligence display shows 6 Jap bombers destroyed by flak. One US Marine NF squadron (8 F4U-2 Corsair) is available in theatre – this unit had been withdrawn from Port Moresby ahead of KB’s last adventure, it is now returned to Port Moresby. AAR’s follow.

Detected status of Jap base at Buna (after raid above) – airfield damage 37, 16 aircraft (all fighters), 23 Jap LCU, no visible Japanese TF’s. .

Detected status of Jap base at Lae (after raid above) – no report of airfield damage or number of Jap planes, 5 Jap LCU, no visible Japanese TF’s.

A newly detected status of Jap base at Rabaul showing unidentified numbers of Jap planes and ship(s) in port, port size 5(4), airfield capacity 6(6), and 5 Jap LCU. Current intelligence data has 11 identified Japanese LCU located in Rabaul – including 8th Fleet HQ, 13 Independent Mixed Rgt, Yokosuka 5 SNLF, 2 Independent Heavy Artillery Bn, 5 and 10 Shipping Engineer Rgts, 20 JAAF Base Force, 144 JAAF AF Bn, three flak LCU’s (50 Field AA Bn plus 23 & 28 Field AA Machine Cannon Cos). My estimate is that it’s likely at least one Jap infantry division (yet to be identified) is already in Rabaul or now enroute.

Summary of Operations 1/07/44 (continued)

South Pacific: Current base status of Noumea – 386K supply and 89K fuel on hand. Noumea airfield fully expanded, current port size at 5(4) expected to reach size 6 within several days.

A transport convoy with five additional construction engineer LCU’s (3, 8 and 24 USN Construction Rgts; 23 & 24 USN Seabees) and 19K supply is now unloading cargo in Noumea. Construction engineer elements already ashore on New Caledonia (excluding the LCU above now unloading) include 620 engineer squads and 160 engineer vehicles on New Caledonia – engineers may soon outnumber the ants.

A summary of current activity underway in the South Pacific theatre area

1) Northward movement of HQ, base force and construction engineer LCU’s plus as much supply and fuel cargo that can be carried from New Zealand to Noumea and Suva. Plans are to push as much of this stuff forward as possible as rapidly as can be done with the available transport. Also under consideration is plans to shift main destination ports for arriving WP transport convoys from the mainland US as soon as possible – WP convoys are currently arriving at Auckland and Wellington, destinations shifting northward to Suva and Noumea. Port facilities in Suva already expanded to maximum size, port expansion at Noumea is well underway.

2) US and Allied (mainly NZ) combat LCU in the South Pacific area are all prepping for assigned future objectives. TOE upgrades also being done (or already done) for a handful of smaller units still needing them. A transport TF has been dispatched to retrieve US 40th Infantry Division from garrison duty at Pago Pago – this division the last major US combat LCU still having a 1941-42 TOE. Once retrieved, 40th Division will undergo TOE upgrade with currently available replacement elements – this division already prepping for an assigned future objective.

3) Construction to expand forward bases continues in New Caledonia. Base expansion at Noumea is approaching completion – once Noumea is completed, plans are to shift construction activity into Koumac and possibly other bases surrounding Noumea. Some construction engineer LCU enroute from New Zealand now being dispatched directly to Koumac.

4) Parts of the US Main Carrier force have been repairing (mostly) light ship damage (system & engine) taken during recent operations at sea. This damage was widespread, affecting nearly all 150 ships in the 10 air combat TF. Ship repair for the Main Carrier force has been distributed across most major bases in New Zealand and eastern Australia – using shipyard facilities at Auckland, Brisbane and Sydney; 7 AR and one ARD (drydock) plus large numbers of naval support elements at all locations. Pier Side repair mode has been used very heavily and quite effectively even with CV’s and fast BB – pier side repair being more efficient in many cases compared to repair ship or shipyard modes. Ship repair activity has been underway since about 12/25/43 with full completion of repair to all ships expected within the next 8-10 days.

5) Lots and lots of pilot training.

In short… practically nothing is idle.

Coastwatcher entries from 1/07 Operations report follow. The past few game turns have seen some reduction in detected Japanese activity reported by coast watchers. If true, this may be an indicator of Pillager possibly diverting activity toward Japanese bases farther to the rear.

Summary of Operations 1/08/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 256K, fuel 11K, port size expected to reach 4(2) shortly. Transport convoy arrives in Port Moresby from Australia – cargo includes elements of HQ 9 RAAF (most of this LCU is already in Port Moresby), 3 KNIL AA Bn, 14 USN Seabees plus 23K supply and 8800 fuel. Naval air search ops have been started from Port Moresby, search arcs covering parts of the Bismarck Sea area plus sea approaches to Buna, Lae and Rabaul. Preparations to move additional Allied air reinforcements into Port Moresby are underway. Air units planned to initially go into Port Moresby airfield include dive bombers arriving from South Pacific theatre, USAAF and Australian 2E skip bombing and torpedo squadrons. Short term air plans for SW Pacific theatre include interdiction of sea movement into Lae, Buna, Rabaul and adjacent Japanese bases – to be followed by additional fighter squadrons and eventually 2E and 4E ground bombing forces.

Summary of this game turn’s aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 4 A6M3a Zero (3 air-to-air, 1 ops)
• 1 N1K1 Rex (ops)
• 1 Ki-61 Tony (on the ground)

No reported Allied plane losses this game turn.

No reported Japanese air activity over New Guinea other than fighter CAP at Buna and Lae.

Allied night bombing strikes against Buna and Lae airfields continue on a reduced scale – many bomber squadrons stood down to rest pilots and recover damaged planes. Weather conditions over NE Australia (particularly Portland Roads) grounded some bombing strikes. AAR’s and Combat Events report entries follow.

6 x 43rd BG/63rd BS B-24D1 Liberator stray due to night
6 x 90th BG/319th BS B-24D Liberator stray due to night

Central Pacific:] US patrol sub again reports contact with B6N2 Jill air patrol (possible KB) near Truk at hex location 112, 111 (S of Truk). A 1/09 Sigint entry reports heavy volume of intercepted Jap radio signals from Truk – detected status of Truk shows no visible Japanese forces or activity other than unidentified ship(s) in port.

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-62 (30 ships) departing for Australia via Capetown. Cargo aboard the convoy includes 3 Engineer Amphibious Brigade, 112K supply and 26K fuel.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – no Japanese ships in port, no Jap TF, 105 aircraft (all fighters), 12 Jap LCU’s, light industry 9(32), refinery 96(105).

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – 86 aircraft (all fighters), 24 Jap LCU, oil production 105(196), refinery 97(4).

China: Update on detected status of Kunming – heavy industry 6(46), light industry 79(2), resources 61(0), manpower 3(0), 1 Jap plane (fighter), 2 Jap LCU.

USAAF and RAF 4E bombers hit light industry facilities at Kunming in a night attack. Two Allied bombers lost (1 B-17E Fortress, 1 Liberator B.III, both ops). Raid did not appear to inflict any additional damage to Kunming light industry – no reported city hits, also detected base status above. Light industry normally would not be a priority target except in cases where it might be useful to Pillager as a local source of supply – in this instance, light industry in Kunming a local supply point source for use in repairing HI damage in Kunming. Knocking out light industry in Kunming would not prevent Pillager from repairing Kunming’s heavy industry but could be an obstacle in the process if needed supply for HI repairs at Kunming has to be brought in from the outside. Combat Events entries and AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 1/11/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 290K, fuel 20K. HQ USAAF V Bomber command now in Port Moresby, this the second air HQ in Port Moresby (the other HQ 9 Group RAAF).

Summary of this game turn’s aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 5 A6M3a Zero (1 air-to-air, 4 ops)
• 1 N1K1-J George (ops)

Allied planes reported destroyed
• 3 B-25D1 Mitchell (2 flak, 1 ops)

Japanese troop transport convoy attacked by USAAF 2E skip bombers. Jap TF remains detected and visible on the game map, composition shown as 10 ships moving on SW heading. Japanese ships shown in the combat replay appear to be all medium to large xAP or AMC – based on AAR and detected composition of the TF, 7 of 10 known ships in the Jap TF received one or multiple bomb hits. Given size and number of identified transport ships in the Jap TF, likely troop cargo could include multiple LCU or a possible division size unit. If Pillager keeps this Jap TF together, it is not likely to reach a port in the coming game turn, making a repeat attack by US skip bombers quite possible. Combat Events report entries and AAR’s follow.

Detected status of Jap base at Buna – airfield damage 20, 36 aircraft (all fighters), 23 Jap LCU, one Jap TF (9 ships, all small ships or barges).

Detected status of Jap base at Lae – no report of airfield damage or number of Jap planes, 11 Jap LCU, no visible Japanese TF’s. (not changed from last game turn)

Japanese fighter sweeps over Australian ground unit occupying open terrain (jungle) hex between Port Moresby and Buna. The LCU (Australian 2/3 Independent Co) had been moved to this hex to (1) bring the hex under Allied control, and (2) secure the NW flank of an Allied ground attack into Buna. I do not have an estimate of Pillager’s intent behind the Jap fighter sweeps – they serve no function that is obvious at this point in time (in any event they aren’t drawing Allied fighters out of Port Moresby). AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 1/11/44 (continued)

Central Pacific: Sigint entries for 1/11 report intercepted Jap radio signals from several locations – Tarawa, Jaluit, Roi-Namur, Abemama. Detected statuses of the four bases show no visible Japanese forces or activity at any of the above locations.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Magwe (after raid below) – 104 aircraft (all fighters), 24 Jap LCU, oil production 107(194), refinery 97(4).

China: USAAF and RAF 4E bombers return to Kunming in a night raid, hit light industry facilities. No Allied bombers lost. Several of the Allied 4E squadrons assigned to the raid did not launch planes, other squadrons launching only some of their planes – poor weather conditions at the bombers’ home airfield (Tezpur) a possible factor. A small amount of additional damage to Kunming light industry reported. Combat Events report entries and AAR’s follow.

Detected status of Kunming - no Japanese planes, airfield size 3(3), heavy industry 6(46), light industry 73(8), one Jap LCU.
