Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 2/22 reports intercepted Jap radio transmssions from Tabiteuea. Detected status of Tabiteuea shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Indian Ocean: Japanese amphibious assault and capture of Cocos Is. My current estimate is that Pillager has likely taken Cocos and Christmas Islands as a defensive rather than offensive measure – most likely to eliminate their use as Allied staging points near the DEI. Regardless… units of the Australian “Home Army” are now transferring to locations in SW Australia (Perth, Geraldton, etc) as a precautionary measure. I don't anticipate Pillager launching a Japanese spoiling attack into SW Australia. If Pillager had wanted Darwin, he’d be there by now – I had no intent of defending NW Australia at any point in the campaign as this area is a logistical hellhole for Allied forces (especially once the DEI fell in 1942). Jap 4th Infantry Division/C sub unit had been based in Balikpapan since 1942 (last reported in Balikpapan on 2/16/44), what cannot be determined at this time is whether part or all of this sub unit is on Cocos Is. AAR’s of the Cocos Is action follow.

TF 217 troops unloading over beach at Cocos Islands, 33,101

Japanese LBA bombers raid Suva, uncertain from the AAR what this raid was targeting though it is likely Pillager is aware of Allied transport shipping operations into Suva and this action may have been an attempted naval air strike. Summary of Operations 2/24/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 599K, fuel 42K. Damaged LST in port at Port Moresby is repairing in pierside mode at least to an extent where it is no longer in immediate danger of sinking (flood damage now 81, all major) but it’s unlikely the LST can be moved out of Port Moresby to a shipyard (Brisbane the nearest available facility). Plans are to keep the LST disbanded in Port Moresby on the chance a spare AR can be moved there at some point in the future to make further repairs on the LST to where it can be moved.

Summary of Operations 2/26/44 (continued)

Formosa: US patrol sub in contact with Jap transport in sea passage between Formosa and Batan Is. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submarine attack near Hengchun at 85,68 (night action, adjacent hex E of Hengchun)

Japanese Ships
AK Kumagawa Maru

Allied Ships
SS Sawfish

AK Kumagawa Maru is sighted by SS Sawfish
SS Sawfish launches 2 torpedoes at AK Kumagawa Maru (one dud torpedo hit)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 2/26 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Eniwetok. Detected status of Eniwetok shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Another 2/26 Sigint entry reports 7 JNAF AF Unit now located at Lihir (near Rabaul), this LCU previously located at Baker Is. This in itself a relatively minor event… though it could be a small but unconfirmed indicator Pillager’s attention is drawn into facing Allied forces in the SW Pacific. While this report indicates Pillager may have evacuated Baker Is (possibly leaving a tempting but minor target open), I’d be content at this point to let this trend (if indeed it is one) continue. The more he stacks into Lae, Buna and Rabaul, the less my Allied forces face elsewhere.

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-68 (21 ships) departing for Australia via Capetown. Cargo aboard the convoy includes 189 USAAF Base Force, 96K supply and 800 fuel. As anticipated, need and value of the EX/XE convoy route (Eastern US to Australia via Capetown) is gradually declining as the campaign continues. Use of this convoy route will likely be completely eliminated once no further requirement or value exists for large-scale transport shipping between the mainland US and Australia, particularly transport shipping to Australia supporting SW Pacific theatre (the main recipient of cargo moved via EX convoys). Another factor (apparently built into AE) is the increased off-map transit time of some EX/XE convoy TF’s between Eastern US and Capetown –movement time of some TF on this route increasing from 25-30 days to about 40 days (this “random” increase starting in late-1943), not sure as to the factors in AE which determine exactly how this works.

Something else being looked at in future planning is arrival of Allied LCU reinforcements from the European theatre around 6/45 (most of these entering in United Kingdom) – pickup and transport of these LCU into on-map operations will require some form of an off-map convoy route, probably via the Mediterranean. A Mediterranean convoy route for LCU transport from Europe in 1945 is a likely successor to the current EX/XE convoy system.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 107 aircraft (all fighters), 2 Jap TF (7 ships total), no ships in port, light industry 9(32), refinery 96(105), 14 Jap LCU.

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe (after raid below) – 127 aircraft (all fighters), oil production 139(162), refinery 97(4), 24 Jap LCU.

No additional damage to Magwe oil production facilities detected. 2 USAAF B-24D Liberator lost (1 flak, 1 ops) and 2 RAF Blenheim IV (both flak) lost. No Japanese planes reported destroyed. Summary of Operations 2/27/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 643K, fuel 42K. Some Allied transport shipping has completed unloading in Port Moresby and now departing for Australia.

KB task forces detected and visible on the game map off Hansa Bay (hex location 98, 120) moving on SE heading. Given KB’s location and movement heading, it appears Pillager may not be operating KB from Truk (which is NE to ENE of KB’s current position). One US patrol sub operating off Hansa Bay reporting several contacts with B6N Jill and D4Y Judy air patrols. Several other US patrol subs issued orders to close on KB’s position or projected movement path. Perhaps another shot at a CV.

Summary of this game turn’s reported aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 4 P1Y1 Frances (2 flak, 2 ops)
• 2 N1K1 Rex (1 air-to-air, 1 ops)
• 1 D3A2 Val (ops)
• 1 D4Y1 Judy (ops)
• 1 E13A1 Jake (air-to-air)

Allied planes reported destroyed
• 1 PBY-5A Catalina (ops)
• 1 C-46A Commando (ops)

Current status of Terapo base – 38K supply on hand, airfield service damage 40, runway damage 55. Allied ground forces now moved inland from Terapo base hex, approaching Wau. Six Japanese LCU detected in Wau base hex - one identified as 2 JAAF AF Bn, at least some of the remainder likely Jap ground combat forces Pillager moved forward from Lae. My initial plan had been to advance Allied LCU from Terapo with the intent of capturing Wau to cut overland communication between Lae and Buna. A revision of that plan (at least short term) may be necessary.

US landing craft TF completed unloading at Terapo, came under attack of Japanese LBA naval air strikes. No ships hit or damaged. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese fighter sweep and bombing raid launched on Terapo airfield, some additional damage to airfield facilities as noted above. I had been keeping Allied LCU in Terapo base hex with engineer elements inactive (rest mode) to prevent repair activity on the airfield in Terapo and conserve supply point stocks for other activity. Plans are to expand airfield and port facilities in Terapo – this activity being held back for now given current situation in Terapo plus priorities in other sectors. AAR’s of Jap air strikes follow.

Summary of Operations 2/27/44 (continued)

South Pacific: Current base status of Noumea – 912K supply and 609K fuel on hand.

Japanese LBA bombers attempt probable naval air strike on transport shipping in Noumea. The raid was expected given my estimate that Pillager had probable knowledge of large-scale movement of Allied shipping at Noumea. Pillager had a Japanese patrol sub (with float plane) operating off Noumea – this sub positioned to detect activity in Noumea without drawing a response from Allied ASW forces. AAR of the Jap air strike follows.

Summary of Operations 2/27/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 643K, fuel 42K. Some Allied transport shipping has completed unloading in Port Moresby and now departing for Australia.

KB task forces no longer visible on the game map. No carrier air strikes from KB or reported contacts with Jap carrier planes from Allied patrol submarines in the vicinity of KB’s detected location off Hansa Bay. Only a question of where (not if) KB will re-appear. I have no planned actions against KB other than defensive measures. Most Allied naval and amphibious forces including surface naval and both carrier forces are currently re-grouping from the Terapo operation and prepping for the next adventure. My general policy in this campaign regarding KB appearances has been largely – (1) track KB’s location and movements as best possible, (2) timely and appropriate counter measures when KB appears in the affected areas, (3) otherwise business as usual. KB is a force to be reckoned with but it is a force with many limitations.

Summary of this game turn’s reported aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 1 Ki-44 Tojo (ops)
• 1 B5N2 Kate (ops)

Allied planes reported destroyed
• 56 SBD-3 Dauntless (all air-to-air, some pilots got home)
• 1 B-25C Mitchell (ops)

Current status of Terapo base – 38K supply on hand, airfield service damage 83, runway damage 63. Ground advance by Allied forces toward Wau has been stopped, given both the current situation in Terapo and the greatly reduced possibility of a quick advance by Allied ground forces to the northern coast of New Guinea to cut Japanese land communication between Lae and Buna. Current number and condition of Allied LCU in the Terapo bridgehead do not allow completion of the original plan at this time. A counter-attack by Japanese ground forces on Terapo is not anticipated and could be handled if it occurs.

My estimate is that supply is likely a significant bottleneck for Japanese forces in New Guinea, especially given the large numbers of Jap LCU and air units Pillager has operating from Lae and Buna. I’m starting to put some focus on attrition of Japanese supply reserves in New Guinea - the goal being output (supply consumption by Jap air and ground forces plus airfield/port repair and recovering destroyed/damaged planes) > input (supply transport into New Guinea). Pillager’s consumption of Japanese planes, pilots and supply in air operations over New Guinea have largely exceeded the results of those actions. Death by logistics…

US landing craft TF (LST’s) departed Terapo without incident. Barge TF’s (LCT’s) continue moving supply from Port Moresby into Terapo.

Japanese fighter sweeps and bombing strikes on Terapo. AAR’s follow.

Detected status of Jap base at Lae – undermined number of Jap planes in Lae, no Jap TF or ships in port, 9 Jap LCU.

US Marine LBA dive bombers launch daylight attack on Buna port with mostly disastrous results, objective of the raid to damage port facilities and destroy barges disbanded in port. USAAF fighters assigned to escort this raid did not take off. Pilot losses in this action more significant than the loss of SBD-3 planes (current front-line use of SBD-3 only in US Marine VMSB squadrons, many SBD-3 in pilot training service). Many pilots did return to base indicating many of the 56 SBD-3 reported destroyed in air-to-air action (above) were likely ops losses. With the SBD-5 passing out of front-line service in USN carrier squadrons, a plane upgrade for these air units may now be in order. AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 3/02/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 678K, fuel 45K. A small Australian infantry LCU (2/6 Ind Coy) is being dispatched on a march along coastal hexes from Port Moresby to Terapo for purposes of opening an overland line of communication between the two bases. Given the map terrain involved (2 hexes total – 1 swamp, 1 jungle), there is some question of the value of the land route between Port Moresby and Terapo as a supply path but this move would certainly make one available and could prove useful if needed.

Summary of Operations 3/02/44 (continued)

South Pacific: Current base status of Noumea – 1.01 million supply and 658K fuel on hand. While preparations for the next move in South Pacific continue; supply, fuel, LCU’s and other resources are being pushed forward in the largest possible quantity. Dock facilities at all three New Caledonia bases (Noumea, Koumac and LaFoa) are continuously operating at full capacity – almost entirely unloading operations.

Convoy detachment WP-151B (9 ships) arrives in Suva from the mainland US. Cargo aboard WP-151B includes US 5201 Engineer Construction Brigade, 38K supply and 2K fuel.

Main body of transport convoy WP-151 (CA Boise II plus 9 transports) arrives in Auckland from the mainland US. Cargo aboard WP-151 includes 31K supply and 59K fuel, no LCU or air units. Boise II (re-name of another CA ___ II) will be reassigned to US Main carrier force, hopefully doing better than its predecessor. A second detachment of convoy WP-151 (WP-151A) is still enroute to Noumea.

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-69 (10 xAP) departs for Australia via Capetown with US 31st Infantry Division as primary cargo plus 17K supply. 31 Division is anticipated as one of the last major US LCU departures to SW Pacific theatre out of the Eastern US. Eastern US has also been used as a departure point for US reinforcements bound for Southeast Asia from the mainland US. A review of future US LCU reinforcements entering the game for SW Pacific and Southeast Asia indicate a possibility that few if any of these will depart for front-line theatres via Eastern US. For SW Pacific theatre LCU’s, this certainly the case once ports in southern Australia are no longer a useful entry point for on-map operations in SW Pacific. Plans for future US LCU reinforcements entering the game for Southeast Asia in the mainland US (most of these engineer and base force LCU) are to put them “on hold” in the mainland US until determined whether these units are most useful in Southeast Asia or diverted to the Pacific theatres.

HQ 20th USAAF and subordinate units were historically (and in AE) intended to go to Southeast Asia to conduct strategic bombing operations from India and China. With the fall of China, employment of 20 USAAF in this manner is mostly out of the picture. It’s likely 20 USAAF and subordinate units will go directly to the Pacific theatres where it later ended up anyway. The fall of China similarly affected 14th USAAF HQ and its units – the current primary mission of this command large scale pilot training. 14 USAAF may likewise be diverted to the Pacific theatres once there is a place or function to insert it.

The EX/XE transport convoy route from Eastern US to Australia via Capetown is a very feasible transit route (especially for transport to SW Pacific) during the early war period through late 1943/early 44. At this time in this campaign it’s recognized the strategic value of this convoy route is diminishing and a major change in its use or a complete phase-out is imminent.

Update from Johnjohn (John)

Period of Operations: November-December 43

CBI: The Burma invasion stalls at Prome and Taungoon (sp). The 7 divisions in the campaign stalled in front of 150,000 enemy troops and returned to the Mandalay area where they are refitting and reinforcing. 3 additional divisions have arrived via Lashio bringing the total to 10 along with 7 independent brigades. Three of the divisions are from the 1 Aussie Corps, headquarters which are enroute from Aussie to Diamond Harbor due to arrive early January 44. Plans are to continue to refit until all reinforcements arrive. Later in 44 the attempt to throw off the enemy will be engaged.

PI-DEI--no particular changes. Allied sub attacks picking up steam, but activity is limited.

Central Pacific--Four invasions of Alinglaplap, Kwajalein, Roi-Namur, and Eniwetok secured the central part of the islands. Supply and fuel being rushed in. Invasion troops already on the way back to Hawaii to refit for Mariana's campaign. No allied losses of note, no reverses, carriers now at PH to refit and Noumea to support the Phase II assault on the upper Solomons. Rennell Island taken by Paratroops in first ever para drop for me. Intel has enemy withdrawing from the area and beefing up the Marianas.

South Pacific: No changes. Influx of supplies and support troops nearly complete. Two divisions are ready, one for Shortlands and the other for Bougainville. That's it. No plans to go any further. Resources will be held for Marianas campaign.

Southwest Pacific: Mac finally got in gear. Port Morseby and Milne Bay were recovered, then Buna, and in the last two months, Wau, Lae, Finschaven (sp) taken and troops are marching to Mandang. Mac has done this with a scratch force given that the Aussie Ist Corps (three Divisions) is in Burma.

The current period is designed for more refitting, some training, and getting ready for newer better aircraft. China is holding, no changes there, but new fighter squadrons and new transport squadrons are starting to appear.

Intel stills has no information on what is left of the KB or the disposition of the mini KB. I am well equipped with carriers and support vessels. Eventually they will show themselves. It will be one fine fight. 44 is a year of surplus for the Allies. It begins now.

John

I’ve concluded something (in my campaign) needs to be done in that theatre, however modest the scale. Pillager has definitely upped the ante in Burma since the collapse of China. It’s not a matter of whether he transferred part of the China Army into Burma but how much – my intel provides some detail but not all possible or probable Japanese transfers from China are accounted for. This scenario considerably enlarges the land battle there.

In my early campaign, I deliberately left much of NE India and areas adjacent to the Burma frontier unoccupied and undeveloped – the main Allied defensive line located in the Dacca-Darjeeling area to prevent the possibility of Allied ground forces being bypassed by a Japanese amphibious landing on the India east coast plus an “Atlantic Wall” set up along that coast and the customary defenses at Colombo. Australian 6 Division remains at Colombo, the only Australians in the Southeast Asia theatre area.

Plans are beginning to go into effect for re-occupying NE India, starting with airfield construction at several locations which will allow an expanded Allied air campaign over Burma. Pillager has likely drawn the IJA air force in Burma down to a fighter-only command - estimated strength 200-300 planes including the 100-strong Ki-54 Nick contingent in Magwe and a similar force at Rangoon. I estimate much of Pillager’s air attention is focused on New Guinea. Given that, quite possible Pillager will have to transfer bombers into Burma from other theatres (Pacific) or do without. Even without China I still possess a significant Chinese army and air force in India.

How much of a Japanese force has Pillager stacked in New Guinea? It could prove costly elsewhere. He may have contained the tip of one large Allied iceberg but there’s more than one iceberg. 32 Japanese LCU in Buna – granted, they’re not all combat units and many of them are identified. A siege of Buna is certainly in the coming attractions for this campaign, 32 LCU too many to ignore. I do have other things to entertain Pillager with elsewhere that in no way interfere with an Allied siege of Buna.

KB not easy to track, even at this point in the campaign. A KB as large as Pillager’s at this point in the campaign is a liability as much as an asset – fuel consumption and a limited number of bases large enough to adequately accommodate it. My US Main carrier force is not small either and requires considerable facilities but I have them in place along with millions of easily available fuel and supply points in theatre. Japanese accommodations for the KB considerably less generous.
