Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 874K, fuel 52K.

Current status of Terapo base – 24K supply on hand. No reported Japanese air or ground activity in the Terapo bridgehead area this game turn.


No Allied or Japanese planes reported destroyed this game turn in the New Guinea area.

Several Allied fighter squadrons in Port Moresby still recovering a small number of damaged aircraft, a few newly assigned replacement pilots remain in transit. Most fighter squadrons in Port Moresby again fully activated.

Nearly all front-line Allied 2E & 4E bombing squadrons in theatre are stood down, mainly to recover damaged aircraft. Small low-level airfield strike against Lae by one operational A-20G attack squadron from Port Moresby. Combat Events report entries and AAR follow.

South Pacific: Ndeni invasion force continues amphibious unloading operations, 77K supply now onshore along with all LCU except a few remaining support elements of 93rd Infantry Division. Two additional artillery units (2 USMC & 4 Field Artillery Bns) arrived at Ndeni and came ashore. Some disruption of LCU elements continue – mainly in support elements of 93 Division.

17 ships and landing craft completed full unloading of cargo and now leaving Ndeni. 40 other transports and landing craft with mainly supply cargo remain at Ndeni. AAR’s of latest amphibious landing ops at Ndeni follow.

No reported surface naval or ASW activity at Ndeni. US bombardment TF departed from Ndeni – original plans were for it to remain there throughout the landing operation, this was changed when found that ships in the bombardment force (particularly BB) had exhausted their onboard primary gun ammunition rendering them of no value for either further shore bombardment or covering the invasion fleet from Japanese surface action. US Escort Carrier force is remaining at Ndeni to provide mainly CAP fighter cover, though its TF are stepping outside the Ndeni base hex. Consideration being given to the possibility of Pillager intervening at Ndeni with Japanese surface naval forces – Ndeni being more within reach of his bases than earlier Allied landing operations (Noumea, Luganville), increasing possibility of a Japanese surface naval sortie. On my own side, Allied exposure to Japanese counter-action at Ndeni cannot be entirely avoided though the degree of exposure can be minimized. 7 US patrol subs are operating in close-cover positions N and NW of Ndeni, US Main Carrier force also within striking range.

No reported attempt by Pillager to continue Japanese air transport into Ndeni. H6K4 Mavis probably not a plane type JFB’s would usually care to consume in great numbers for this type of mission.

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 878K, fuel 52K. One of two remaining front-line USAAF P-40 fighter squadrons based in Port Moresby is now upgrading planes from P-40N5 to P-51B. Current Allied fighter squadrons in Port Moresby includes 2 P-39D (mainly used in low level attack), 1 P-40N5, 2 P-38H Lightning, 1 F4U-1 Corsair, 2 Spitfire VIII (Australians), 6 P-47D2 & D25 Thunderbolt, 1 P-51B Mustang. Many of these squadrons veteran units in New Guinea, ace pilots in considerable numbers and widely distributed. The 13 fighter squadrons now in Port Moresby credited with over 1800 Japanese planes destroyed – other fighter squadrons not currently at Port Moresby bringing this total close to 2000.

Current status of Terapo base – 17K supply on hand. No reported Japanese air or ground activity in the Terapo bridgehead area this game turn.

Nearly all front-line Allied 2E & 4E bombing squadrons in theatre remain stood down, still recovering damaged aircraft. Recovery of damaged planes a key factor and major bottleneck in the pace of all Allied bombing attack operations over New Guinea – this despite fully expanded airfields in NE Australia, ample aviation support elements in place and supply on hand (if anything a glut, not a shortage). Much of this situation (symptoms) occurred since going to the last AE beta. Most Allied bombing squadrons (both 2E & 4E) spending as much and often more time stood down to recover planes as actively flying bombing missions. Pilot replacements and fatigue recovery is part of the process but pilots recover much quicker than the planes. What’s happening appears to be overall air game mechanics rather than an AFB vs JFB bias – my estimate is that Pillager also faces this or a similar problem in some form or other and we’re both dealing with it.

Night raid on Lae airfield by the only currently active Allied 2E bombing squadron in theatre, this squadron due to stand down for pilot fatigue recovery (squadron has no planes lost or damaged as of now but planes likely to go into damaged state after the squadron is stood down). Combat Events report entries and AAR’s follow.

Several small Allied transport convoys to Horn Island – some already arrived and unloading, one still enroute. Current status of Horn Is base has its airfield at maximum 6(3) size and a size 2(1) port. Next step in Horn Island’s development is bringing in aviation support LCU followed by planes. Initial mission for Horn Is base is mainly Allied fighter support over the Terapo bridgehead area – the most likely plane candidates 3 USAAF P-38J Lightning squadrons still based in NE Australia.

A base still under Allied (Dutch) control along the southern coast of New Guinea at Merauke now under consideration for future Allied base expansion in this direction. Fully expanded, Merauke would have a size 8 airfield and side 4 port, potentially useful in launching Allied air operations against Japanese targets in central New Guinea (i.e. Wewak, Aitape, Hollandia). It’s an attractive option, the question now being would it be needed and what would it be needed for within the overall “plan”. Naval movement and/or a general Allied advance through the Arafura Sea (N of Australia) is also a potential back door into the DEI – reducing or eliminating the need to develop Darwin for this role.

India: Some attention now given to building up an Allied offensive capability in this general area, though still uncertain as to where, when or how an Allied offensive from India will actually occur. As no doubt obvious by now – this theatre has taken a low priority relative to elsewhere (perhaps too low a priority), the fall of China further decreasing its level of priority.

The most capable parts of British naval forces were transferred to the Pacific theatres along with much of the available British/Commonwealth amphibious transport. Part of my overall strategy in 1942-43 to push maximum expansion of Allied offensive capacity into South and SW Pacific as quickly as possible regardless of cost to other theatres – the most prominent neglected theatres including Southeast Asia in general plus Central Pacific.

With currently available 1944 US forces, it is quickly becoming possible to divert British naval forces plus (possibly) some British amphibious capability back to the Southeast Asia/Indian Ocean theatre area. This process already started in Central Pacific, with most US late-1943 (and after) reinforcements retained in Hawaii or the US West Coast for this purpose.

At this point, no definite Allied offensive plan is in place for Southeast Asia theatre. Possible options being considered include a ground advance in Burma with emphasis on the center/northern flank. A significant “free” Chinese army and air force exists that could be sufficient to re-introduce into southern China on at least a limited scale. A successful Allied re-entry to southern China using Chinese forces could open possible Allied advances further into China with British, Indian and possibly some US ground forces reinforcing this. Any plan of this type is most likely a late-1944 into 1945 option that would be an Allied offensive “on top of everything else”, not necessarily creating a major source of additional damage to Pillager’s Japanese war effort. The fall of China created a problem in this part of the world where Pillager could and did transfer sufficient Japanese forces from China into Burma and Southeast Asia in general, effectively a serious obstruction if not entirely blocking more obvious (and historical) Allied paths of advance.

An “end run” from India into the DEI has also been under consideration, though a by-product of this option could have Pillager drawing Japanese forces from Burma/Southeast Asia into the DEI (and closer to the Pacific theatres) – allowing Pillager to further concentrate the bulk of Japanese defensive forces into a tighter area rather than spreading that defense out.

Allied forces resume ground assault on Buna. Some progress at least in terms of reducing Jap fortification levels in Buna – this operation proving to be a methodical, ugly, unavoidable siege. While a considerable number of Allied combat LCU elements were disabled in this game turn’s action, another dent was put in Japanese LCU forces defending Buna. Recovery of disabled LCU elements on either side at Buna is problematical – though Pillager’s problem with this is (or will be) possibly greater particularly if supply has a role in disabled LCU element recovery (a subject not appearing to be addressed in either the manual or forums). Pillager may not have a shortage of Japanese leaders in Buna, though available supply stocks and rate of supply consumption inside Buna will eventually reach a tipping point especially if supply is needed and consumed in disabled LCU element recovery. Disabled LCU elements in Japanese units inside Buna may eventually become as good as a “kill” in ground combat results. Conservation of combat strength in Allied LCU at Buna is a requirement for any number of reasons, both in terms of maintaining an effective (however slow) attack and covering against possible Japanese ground counter-attack from either inside or outside Buna. Central Pacific: Sigint entries for 4/25 report intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Truk and Baker Is. Detected status of Baker Is shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Unidentified LCU visible in detected status at Truk, another 4/25 Sigint entry reports 115 Japanese planes based at Truk. No visible Japanese ships or TF in Truk base hex. Jap LCU reported in Truk from available intelligence data include Truk Naval Fortress (static unit) plus 10 other Jap units - 6 South Seas Detachment, Combined 8 SNLF, 85 Naval Gd, four flak LCU, 19 JAAF AF Bn, 4 Base Force (IJN), HQ Southeast Area Fleet. Pillager appears to occasionally “deposit” Jap LCU at Truk as a transit point for later transfer to other front-line bases, this practice entirely possible with at least some of the units I’ve identified above.


Australia: Transport convoy EX-67 (21 ships) arrives from Eastern US via Capetown. Cargo aboard the convoy includes 189 USAAF Base Force and 96K supply.

South Pacific: Unconfirmed action between planes from US Main Carrier force covering Ndeni operations and Japanese transport TF south of Nauru Is (hex location 126, 134). AAR and Combat Events report entries indicate a naval strike occurred, no Japanese ships were listed as sunk this game turn in the Intelligence display. Jap TF was spotted by naval air search and reported moving at 10 kts on E heading, probable destination Tabiteuea. No Japanese TF visible on the game map in this sea area. Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 4/26 reports intercepted Jap radio signals from unidentified TF(s) at sea E of Ocean Island (hex location 132, 130). No reported contacts from either of two US patrol subs operating nearby. Some possibility this contact could be linked to the US Main Carrier force naval air strike near Nauru Is (above), though nothing to either prove or disprove this.


DEI: US patrol sub (SS Muskellunge) hit and damaged in attack by Ki-48 Lily air patrol near Macassar (hex location 65, 107). Reported damage to SS Muskellunge – system 49, float 28, engine 3, sub returning to base at 14 kts.

Allied ground forces bombard Ndeni. The combat engineer unit landing with the Ndeni invasion force (110 Combat Engineer Bn) is effectively decimated after Allied deliberate ground assaults launched on 4/24 and 4/25. The current Japanese fortification level at Ndeni (level 5) basically requires reinforcement of Allied combat engineers at Ndeni in order for an effective ground assault to continue. The only other Allied combat engineer unit in South Pacific theatre area (US 131 Combat Engineer Rgt) is at Luganville but currently recovering disabled engineer elements following its use in the Luganville assault. Current base status of Luganville – 294K supply and 2900 fuel on hand. Forward movement of supply and fuel points into Luganville from Auckland for stockpiling has started on a modest scale – though overall base size at Luganville allows unlimited storage of supply and fuel with minimum or no spoilage, the smaller maximum 6(3) port size at Luganville will have some restriction on the useful scale of stockpiling at this base. How big a stockpile that can be stuffed into a base is one thing, maximum port size a primary factor dictating how well and how quickly you can load/unload cargo into and from that stockpile – this universally true at all bases regardless of size.

Current base status of Noumea – 1.58 million supply and 1.10 million fuel on hand.

Main body of two transport convoys (WP-175 & WP-177) arrive in Auckland from mainland US. Cargo aboard WP-175 (1 AO, 16 transports) includes 87K supply and 18K fuel. Cargo aboard WP-177 (17 ships) includes 81K supply and 47K fuel. No LCU or air units arrived on either convoy. Detachments from both WP-175 and WP-177 are enroute to Suva and Noumea. AO arriving with WP-175 to remain in Auckland for assignment to replenishment TF’s.

Allied ground forces at Buna launch deliberate assault. Fortification level in Buna again reduced. Considerable numbers of disabled elements in attacking Allied LCU though few LCU elements destroyed. Allied divisional units at Buna remain at 95-99% TOE strength, factors restricting a continued attack being fatigue and disabled LCU elements within these units. Once again, the process will be repeated – attack then step back into defend, draw supply, recover fatigue and disabled elements to the extent possible, then attack again. Given that fortification levels in Buna are declining with each attack, patience is definitely an order of the day. This before factoring in Japanese difficulties occurring inside Buna. I view it’s quite likely this recipe will need to be repeated at future Japanese strongholds in this campaign, especially given the scale of Pillager’s known transfer of Japanese LCU (especially divisional units) from China to the Pacific theatres. South Pacific: 108K supply now onshore at Ndeni with Allied ground forces. Two amphibious TF arrived with 1 & 15 NZ Infantry Brigades plus 7800 supply. Amphibious loading of US 110 Combat Engineer Bn completed, plans are to transport the unit to either Noumea or possibly Auckland for rebuilding with replacement pool LCU elements.

No ground attack bombing raids this game turn on Japanese LCU at Ndeni. USAAF 4E bomber squadrons at Noumea are recovering pilot fatigue and damaged planes. Sweep missions over Ndeni were launched by several fighter squadrons from the US Escort Carrier force in addition to continued CAP coverage – these failed to engage any Japanese planes. Detected status of Jap base in Ndeni now shows no Japanese planes based there. It’s probable Pillager removed the Jap LBA fighter squadron (N1K1-J George) operating at Ndeni airfield last game turn, the air unit most likely pulled back to Lunga/Tulagi. I had expected a high possibility of this move but dispatched the fighter sweeps just in case. Catching the Jap fighters over Ndeni providing some potential kill opportunities. “Hit and run” dispatching of Japanese CAP fighters (or other planes) into Ndeni is not viewed a significant problem but does work slightly in the Allied favor – (1) added supply consumption at a base already isolated and under attack, and (2) the possibility of damaged Jap planes stranded in Ndeni.

No ground combat at Ndeni this game turn.

Current base status of Noumea – 1.58 million supply and 1.13 million fuel on hand.

Convoy detachment WP-179B (7 ships) arrives in Suva from mainland US – cargo includes 43K supply and 5K fuel, no LCU or air units. Current stockpiles on Fiji (Suva & Nadi combined) now at 1.32 million supply and 313K fuel.

No ground attack bombing raids this game turn on Japanese LCU at Ndeni. Allied bomber squadrons at Noumea remain stood down recovering pilot fatigue and damaged planes. Sweep missions and CAP over Ndeni from the US Escort Carrier force continued.

Allied LCU continue recovering fatigue and disruption – current fatigue levels at 25-30 in the three US divisions, disruption level at or near 10. I’m taking on a similar formula at Ndeni to what’s being done at Buna. Given fortification levels and Pillager’s stacking of Japanese LCU, this is basically what I expect to see through the remainder of this PBEM campaign. Pillager’s formula could be to throw enough (Japanese) bodies in front of the Allies for a long enough period of time and possibly win the campaign – either I can’t chew my way through this mass fast enough or the Allies knock themselves out trying. This campaign clearly a battle of attrition in two areas – (1) inflicting maximum attrition on Japanese forces as efficiently as possible, and (2) keeping Allied forces as intact as possible to the point where some kind of continuous effective attack is maintained at any rate of movement. High levels of fatigue, disruption or actual losses (destroyed planes, LCU elements, etc) in Allied forces from a faster pace of attack will likely result in increased delays with little or no added results to show for it.

Combined forward stockpiles at Noumea and Fiji now at 3+ million supply and 1.4 million fuel – part of this stockpile is points transferred northward from Auckland along with cargo arriving aboard transport convoy detachments from the mainland US. An additional 2.7 million fuel and 8.7 million supply remains on hand in New Zealand. The total stockpile above is for South Pacific theatre alone – slightly smaller but separate stockpiles existing for SW Pacific. It would be safe to say the WP transport convoy system has far exceeded expectations.

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 5/01 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Kwajalein. Detected status shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.


Australia: Mass ship upgrade (mainly 4/44 with increased flak) underway for most US APA ships now employed in South/SW Pacific theatre operations. Time period to complete the scheduled upgrade is 16 days, this activity done in a time period where the APA’s are not currently needed in active operations. APA ship upgrade also includes repair (as necessary) of minor wear and tear damage taken during the Ndeni landing operation.


Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – 94 aircraft (all fighters), oil production 147(154), refinery 97(4), 24 Jap LCU.

Status: offline 		The damage on that xAP at Ndeni looks like collision damage. Check your Op reports for the last couple of turns for a one-liner on the incident. There should be another ship in the TF with lesser damage.

I do check for that stuff, there wasn't anything. The damaged xAP was also the only ship in the TF (or any TF in the hex) with any significant damage. You also get the one line report entry indicating a ship ran aground, none of those either. The ships were fired on by Japanese forces ashore, not entirely eliminating gunfire as the possible source of damage.
