Status: offline 		Summary of Operations 5/02/44

South Pacific: 109K supply now onshore at Ndeni with Allied ground forces. All LCU elements of 1 & 15 NZ Infantry Brigades are now onshore. 15 NZ Brigade had some LCU element losses and a significant number of disabled elements during unloading ops, this unit now at 91% of TOE strength. 1 NZ Brigade landed with no significant losses though disabled elements of this unit are being recovered. xAP bringing the two NZ brigades to Ndeni still unloading supply cargo. AAR of latest amphibious unloading ops at Ndeni follow.

Allied night bombing attacks against airfield targets in New Guinea launched. A gradual plane upgrade in front-line USAAF 2E squadrons from B-25C to B-25D1, G or H Mitchells is underway. Current base status of Luganville – 345K supply and 13K fuel on hand. Air transport of supply points from Noumea into Luganville has been underway in most recent game turns, this being done using available support capacity for air missions in Noumea not required for other activity (CAP, naval search, etc). Airlift operations accomplishing two purposes – pilot training in air transport squadrons and pushing a modest quantity of supply point stockpiles forward. Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon - no reported number of Jap planes, no Jap TF, 7 Jap LCU (-3 from last report), manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 87(114), light industry 9(32), fires 44.

Detected base statuses of Rangoon and Magwe (below) are showing decreased numbers of Jap LCU located in both locations, this decrease after a long period of constant Jap LCU numbers at these bases. At this point, unclear as to exactly what’s going on, no available information providing any kind of complete picture. Possibilities include Pillager transferring LCU out of Burma for use in other theatres, perhaps a more unlikely but not entirely impossible “retreat towards the enemy” (advance towards India). One unidentified Jap LCU detected and visible on the game map at hex location 63, 46 (adjacent hex NE of Lashio) – likely (road) movement of this Jap unit is crossing the Burma-China border in either direction. In any event, my current estimate does not view this as a general Japanese withdrawal from Burma. Allied ground forces in mobile reserve in India (III and IV Indian Corps plus additional forces) placed in strat mode for possible movement as needed or desired.

Nothing visible on the game map at this hex location, no Allied ships or submarines in the immediate area of this contact.


Australia: Transport convoy MX-28 (12 ships) arrives in Australia from Abadan via Capetown, cargo includes 133K fuel.


Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 113 aircraft (all fighters), 2 Jap TF (9 ships total), 14 Jap LCU (returned to previous numbers), manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 87(114), light industry 9(32), fires 6.

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – 99 aircraft (all fighters), airfield damage 4, oil production 147(154), refinery 97(4), 24 Jap LCU (returned to previous numbers).

Allied air recon missions were dispatched to both Magwe and Rangoon to verify possible movement of Japanese ground forces from these bases. Results of both recon missions were negative – LCU counts in Rangoon and Magwe indicating no Jap LCU had moved from either location. Sigint entry for 5/06 indicates Jap 9 Independent Artillery Bn at hex location 63, 46 (adjacent road hex N of Lashio), one Jap LCU visible on the game map in Lashio base hex. Unidentified Jap LCU detected last game turn near the Burma-China border near Lashio is possibly 9 Artillery Bn. 9 Artillery Bn entered the game as reinforcement in Canton (China) on 2/15/44.


India: Preparations for (strategic mode) land movement of III and IV Indian Corps units is continuing, plans are for these formations to occupy bases near the India-Burma border. XV Indian Corps will remain based in Calcutta for now. XXIII Indian Corps continues occupying “Atlantic Wall” positions in coastal bases between Calcutta and Madras. I have no immediate plans for Allied ground forces to enter Burma though movements of III and IV Indian Corps will aid development of any future plan. Expansion of airfield and port facilities at Chittagong to maximum sizes is nearing completion – plans are to transfer Allied planes and aviation support into Chittagong to begin air operations against targets in Burma, also plans to dispatch sea transport of supply and fuel stocks into Chittagong are underway. After completion of Chittagong base expansion, construction engineers from Chittagong will likely move into Cox’s Bazar and/or Akyab to begin construction activity. Supply for Allied-controlled bases along the India-Burma border is estimated a significant bottleneck in large-scale deployment of Allied ground and air forces in this area. Movement of supply via sea transport and airlift projected to be important components of Allied logistics at bases in the border area, capability of overland supply movement into these bases from rear-area locations inside India likely to have limited value for maintaining adequate supply levels in forward locations.

Pillager has advanced one detected Jap LCU into the adjacent coastal hex NW of Buna (hex location 99, 128) – this a possible move to launch a Jap ground attack to reopen an overland Japanese line of communication into Buna. I had foreseen this event. 2nd Australian Division (originally assigned for the assault on Buna) was instead diverted into hex 99, 128 as a blocking position against this possibility. 2 Australian Division is at full TOE strength, upgraded to 1943 LCU elements, currently no disruption or disabled elements and minimal fatigue level. It appears Pillager’s recent fighter sweeps over this hex location were intended to identify Allied LCU in this hex prior to Japanese LCU entering the hex – the Jap fighter sweeps finding only Australian 2/3 Independent Coy also located in the hex, 2 Australian Division likely stayed hidden (at least according to my AAR).

No ground combat activity this game turn at Buna. Allied LCU continue recovery of disabled elements and fatigue.

Japanese fighter sweeps over coastal hex adjacent to Buna and Salamua (hex location 99, 128) have stopped.

Allied daylight bombing of port facilities in Buna stopped for the same circumstances I described earlier with night raids over New Guinea. Again… a matter of recovering pilot fatigue and damaged planes in air units.

Pillager launches another Japanese LBA ground attack air strike on Allied ground forces in Buna base hex, this raid met by a reception committee. It should be noted I have two groups of Allied fighter squadrons separately assigned to Sweep and LRCAP missions over Buna base hex – one to deal with Japanese CAP fighters, the second to intercept Jap bombing raids. Night airfield bombing raid against Magwe airfield by RAF Blenheim IV squadrons. 14 Blenheims destroyed in action (9 air-to-air, 5 flak), no reported Japanese plane losses. Given depleted numbers of Blenheim IV planes in the replacement pool and general ineffectiveness of this plane type (range and bomb load), the three RAF squadrons still operating Blenheim IV planes being taken out of front-line service – at this time not certain as to specific plane type they will be converted to or future employment of the three squadrons after conversion. US Main Carrier force arrives in Noumea for replenishment and minor repairs on some ships. A task force (4 CV, 4 CA, 3 CL plus DD) containing ships held in reserve during Ndeni landing operations has been dispatched to Noumea. Ships from this TF include new arrivals (reinforcements) plus ships detached from the carrier force to complete ship upgrades during the Ndeni operation. Ships that had been held in reserve will be rotated into the Main Carrier force, a number of ships currently with the Main Carrier force due for ship upgrades will be rotated out and sent to Australia to complete the upgrades. Projected ship detachments from the Main Carrier force for upgrades include CV Lexington & Saratoga (1/44 upgrade), CV Hornet (10/43 upgrade), CV Manassas (10/43 Essex class upgrade), plus 7 Brooklyn and Cleveland class CL (4/44 upgrades). Australia: Transport convoy EX-66 (14 transports, 3 AO, 1 AKA) arrives from Eastern US via Capetown. Cargo aboard the convoy includes one LCU (rebuilt Clark Field USAAF Base Force), 48K supply and 60K fuel. AO and AKA arriving with EX-66 will remain in Australia for front-line employment.
