Summary of Operations 5/12/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 951K, fuel 58K.

Current status of Terapo base – 22K supply on hand. No reported air or ground combat activity in the Terapo bridgehead area.

Summary of this game turn’s reported aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 2 N1K1-J George (both on the ground)
• 4 N1K1 Rex (2 air-to-air, 2 ops)

Allied planes reported destroyed
• 4 P-39D Airacobra (2 flak, 2 ops)
• 3 B-25G Mitchell (2 air-to-air, 1 ops)
• 2 B-25H Mitchell (both flak)
• 1 A-20G Havoc (ops)

Allied night airfield raids against several targets in New Guinea using both low-level and conventional bombing strikes – targets include Lae, Madang, Finschhafen. B-25H Mitchell planes are proving less effective in level bombing missions than the B-25C planes they replaced mainly due to the B-25H’s slightly shorter range (result is bombing at extended vs normal range). Combat Events report entries and AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 5/14/44 (continued)

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 960K, fuel 63K.

Current status of Terapo base – 21K supply on hand. Japanese ground attack air strike against Terapo base hex, no significant effect or damage. My practice is largely ignoring most Japanese air activity at this level, concentrating more on offensive air missions and conserving readiness of Allied air units for planned offensive operations and other opportunities that may arise for which offensive air missions are most useful. Of course, a Japanese raid of this size/nature can be pursued when the opportunity exists to inflict significant Jap plane/pilot losses – subject (also, of course) to this type of action not being a significant distraction from the overall objective. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Afternoon Air attack on 7th Australian Division, at 96,127 (Terapo)

Weather in hex: Light cloud

Raid spotted at 15 NM, estimated altitude 14,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 4 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-67-Ia Peggy x 5

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
4 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x Ki-67-Ia Peggy bombing from 11000 feet
Ground Attack: 3 x 250 kg GP Bomb

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No reported Allied or Japanese aircraft losses at any location in New Guinea.

A small night airfield bombing strike against Lae by USAAF 2E bombers failed to launch. No reported Japanese air activity over Buna and surrounding land areas. Allied daylight bombing of port facilities in Buna again suspended this game turn, air units stood down. No reported ground combat activity in Buna base hex. Jap PB sunk in Buna base hex after hitting mine laid by a Dutch patrol sub. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 4 encounters mine field at Buna (99,129)

Japanese Ships
PB Yasushima Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage (sunk)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detected status of Jap base at Buna – no airfield or port damage, no report of Jap planes, no Jap TF, 20 Jap LCU.

Unidentified Japanese planes no longer detected at Wau.

Detected status of Jap base at Rabaul – 196 aircraft (78 fighters), 6 ships in port (1 AK, 5 various small ship types), 5 Jap TF (18 ships total, all small ship types), 35 Jap LCU (17 complete LCU formations identified in available intelligence data, excluding partial LCU or fragments thereof).

Current base status of Luganville – 387K supply and 90K fuel on hand. Port size at Luganville reached maximum 6(3), construction to expand airfield facilities from current size 6 to maximum 8(5) now resuming. One USAAF P-38 Lightning squadron transferred into Luganville from New Zealand after conversion from pilot training to front-line combat operation – this conversion involving a full pilot exchange from training to full trained combat ready, in some cases also a plane upgrade, the conversion process typically done in 7-10 days. Plans are to begin LRCAP operations (using drop tanks) over Ndeni from Luganville. Expected Japanese air opposition over Ndeni is mainly unescorted bombers, Ndeni largely beyond the range of Jap fighter planes based at Lunga unless Pillager also begins using drop tanks.

Current base status of Noumea – 1.75 million supply and 1.26 million fuel on hand.

Japanese minesweeping operations in Buna base hex to remove small minefield laid by Dutch patrol sub – this minefield intended more as an additional inconvenience to Pillager’s supply transport into Buna than actually sink anything, though the mines did sink a Jap PB in Buna on 5/14. The Jap minesweeper dispatched to Buna was found and sunk at daylight by LBA dive bombers from Port Moresby (though losses to these planes did not make sinking the minesweeper particularly worthwhile). The naval air strike below (first air action over Buna this game turn) did draw Japanese CAP fighters away from the larger ground attack bombing strike arriving over Buna later. AAR’s of Jap minesweeping ops and naval air strike follow.

Summary of Operations 5/21/44 (continued)

As seen below and in other recent postings, numbers and combat ability of Japanese surface ASW ships (especially E ship type) has increased significantly. I’m now evaluating US patrol sub activity off the Japanese Home Islands and surrounding sea areas along with Pillager’s increased capability and emphasis on Jap surface ASW vs LBA air patrols. I’m suspecting (not yet verified) that available Japanese ship upgrades for surface ASW ships could play some role in this. US sub patrols around the Home Islands in this campaign has not exactly been a particularly lucrative endeavor, though there is some necessity and value to operating US subs near the Home Islands (regardless of their effect) for a number of reasons.

Yellow Sea: Group (TF) of newly arrived US patrol subs in actions with Japanese surface ASW. Submarine group has since dispersed into individual sub patrol TF moving to various patrol zones in nearby locations. AAR’s follow.
