South Pacific: Current base status of Ndeni – 247K supply on hand. Port facilities at Ndeni now expanded to size 3(1). Allied LCU in Ndeni invasion force continue recovery of fatigue, disruption and disabled elements as well as preparation for new objectives.

Current base status of Luganville – 634K supply and 103K fuel on hand.

Current base status of Noumea – 2.21 million supply and 1.65 million fuel on hand.

Main body of transport convoy WP-200 (7 transports, 4 PC) arrives in Auckland from mainland US. Cargo aboard the convoy includes 43K supply and 3500 fuel, no LCU or air units. Detachments of WP-200 are enroute or already arrived at Suva, Noumea and Luganville. The four PC arriving with WP-200 will remain at Noumea for use as attached escort ships with Landing Craft TF (short-range LCT transport) in South/SW Pacific theatre area – PC ship types in this role intended to counter Japanese MGB/MTB in surface naval combats vs Landing Craft TF. With availability of DE’s in large numbers, most PC ships are no longer required for use in ASW escort operations.

Plane upgrades are underway in some USAAF 4E bomber squadrons involving B-24 Liberator variants, this process following my practice of utilizing older plane types in front-line squadron service as long as possible (and practical to do so) before upgrading to newer plane types. This round of plane upgrades affect USAAF 4E units in SW Pacific theatre and India, with plans for this particular plane upgrade to extend to other Pacific theatres. Upgrades now underway in SW Pacific affect USAAF front line 4E bomber units in this theatre currently equipped with B-24D1 Liberators (these upgrading to B-24J) – this will bring all USAAF 4E bomber units in SW Pacific to B-24J standard. B-24D1 Liberators released to replacement pools in this upgrade will in turn be used as upgrades for USAAF 4E squadrons based in India currently equipped with older B-24D Liberator and B-17E Fortress planes. Plans are to employ B-24J Liberators as the primary plane type for USAAF 4E squadrons in all Pacific theatres as increased numbers of replacement pool B-24J planes become capable support front-line USAAF 4E units throughout the Pacific area. This series of 4E bomber upgrades excludes USAAF air units now equipped with B-29 Superforts. Both the B-24D and B-17E are out of production (for some time) and numbers of available replacement pool planes for the two plane types have diminished to where operational use of these plane types in front-line squadrons can no longer be adequately supported.

This practice for plane type upgrades was established to maximize use and availability of Allied planes in front-line units and the replacement pools. While the practice does hold back newer plane types when first introduced, it also ensures maximum utilization of older plane types until numbers of newer planes in the replacement pools allow large-scale upgrading of air units to new planes while maintaining sufficient numbers of replacement planes to cover combat and operational losses in upgraded air units. I designed and established this practice in response to fairly slow production rates in AE for many Allied plane types.


Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 6/27 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Maleolap, detected status of the base shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.


Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 142 aircraft (all fighters), 1 Jap TF (2 ships, both AMc), 15 Jap LCU, manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 72(129), light industry 9(32).

Comment: The months advance much more slowly with each turn taking several hours to prepare. I was warned about this.

I am in my second campaign against the Japanese due to computer crash two years ago. I am playing against the computer.

In the five years I have been playing, I have gone from noob to reasonably experienced player with respect to game mechanics. There is still lots to learn.

Quickly, I held against the enemy in the early going, swapped one for one in three small carrier encounters, and now hold a significant edge in shipping and carriers. My air forces engaged long and hard in 42 and early 43 in northern Australia, PNG, and Burma/India. Few enemy planes remain outside of Formosa and the PI/DEI and home islands. In 43 I invaded Burma and by years end took the central cities and reopened the Burma road. China has been a stalemate, with allied forces holding a line through central china to Wenchow, which successfully repulsed three divisions early in the war and has held on since. Chinese LCUs are holding cities, strategic defensive territories (jungle, rough, and mountain passes) and holding on with considerable supply support via the airbridge with India. Numerous small LCUs are placed on road junctions, effectively cutting off supply to the interior of China for Japan. The AI does not force these units to move unless an operation is planned in the area.

Burma: March saw the two pulses gathered in Magwe and Mandalay push forward. The enemy is dug in Prome and Tongoo. Two Corps, the Indian 15th and Indian 33rd armored, pushed to Prome and took Prome in three days, three weeks ahead of schedule. Engineers immediately rushed in to repair the airfield and make it operational. At Tongoo, the enemy is proving much harder to dislodge. The 4th Indian Corps, 1st Aussie Corps, which diverted to India upon returning from the Middle East and whose Hq also transferred to India from Aussie, are at the center of that assault with 14th Army support. The third special forces division. 5 brigades of Chindits, rushed down a road bypassing Tongoo and are directly outside of Pegu. The supply pipeline to Tongoo is cut. So is the retreat path to Rangoon. The Prome force has now decimated the enemy (15K casualties) and is 92 miles from Rangoon, pushing the remnant along in front of its assault. Rangoon should fall in early April. The 33rd armored corps has moved to join the Tongoo force. 5 Japanese Divisions are situated in the defense there. I have deliberately not bombed Rangoon in hope of grabbing its airfield, naval yard, and refineries intact.

Aussie: Darwin is now the major sub base supporting operations from Aussie. Perth released most of the rest of subs assigned there in March to Darwin. A drydock will be in Darwin by the end of April.

PNG: Mac has progressed to Madang and is building up the base for future operations. The first Cav is embarking 3/31 to move to Sarmi along with an Engr to reinforce and build the base there. Air ops show no defensive aircraft capable of flight ops anywhere in the PNG, meaning the supply is gone. This is not the result of operations, but the enemy not supplying NG bases. That may be in part to the destruction of the port facilities at Rabaul by the SOPAC operations in the Solomons. I am jumping past Aitap and Hollandia, no need to take either base, same for Wewak and the Admiralty Islands.

SOPAC: All offensive operations have been suspended but for continued air attacks on Rabaul. Lunga is now the assembly area for the assault on Guam and Rota. (PH is the assembly area for Tinian and Saipan).
All Islands from Bougainville to the canal are in allied hands. There is no plan to assault Buka or Green Islands. Bases are being built up.

CENPAC: Plans underway to resume CENPAC operations with the planned assault of the Marianas in June. Two assembly areas have been setup, but the assault will be joint. New carrier Kittyhawk (I finally figured out how to change names) renaming Lex 2 when Lex is still in operations, is due to arrive PH in a week. This brings fleet carrier divisions (3CVs or combo of CVs and CVLs) to eleven. Essentially each division is one task group.

Lexington and South Dakota, both heavily damaged in carrier battle four months ago, are completing repairs at Alameda. Several Aussie cruisers are finishing refits at Mare Island.

INDIA: The first of the UK carrier reinforcements are arriving, but there is a problem with air groups. It will be several months before sufficient airgroups are available to stock the carriers. I am considering forwarding some of the saved USN airgroups which are beached to Colombo to provide much needed strike capability. Both CAG 1 and CAG 8 are available for this purpose, though I have been swapping them out to provide replacements for depleted groups from operations. I likely will not do it, but I am thinking about it.

The B29s have arrived at Aden and are in the process of being forwarded to India via Karachi. Merrills Marauders are in Burma headed for the 3rd special force division. They are still making their way through the jungle from Imphal.

NOPAC: Essentially no action since mid 42 up here. Allies are building bases along the alute chain of islands. Otherwise quiet.

SPECIAL NOTE: I was previously alerted to the prospect of "E" type patrol boats vastly improving IJN ASW capability. That has proven to be the case. I have 5 fleet boats being repaired at Perth with significant damage. I have five more attempting to make port with significant, if not fatal, major damage. These are headed for Darwin and then to Sydney. One other sub, hit off northern japan and seriously damaged, is attempting to make Seattle (Which is the closest repair facility). The drydock sent to Kwajalene was damaged in a collision 90 miles out and has returned to PH for repairs. A drydock is in Noumea, and another closing in on Darwin. A fourth was earmarked for Perth, but plans now are to send it to Guam.

+1. The more you do manually and the more detail you’re doing it to, game turns become much longer. The transport convoy system and pilot training occupy the majority of my time with game turns. I’ve likely trained pilots for some nationalities and air branches beyond overkill – my reserve of fully-trained USAAF fighter pilots in the reserve pool now approaching 1500. In other nationalities and air branches, I’m still scrambling to meet current and projected future demand for fully trained pilots, notably in USN carrier fighter pilots. As you’ve no doubt noticed, many air groups aboard US CV’s newly arriving in the game enter with untrained or half-trained pilots – especially true in VF (fighter) squadrons. I’m training USN fighter (and other) pilots in advance of the arrival of new CV’s on the premise that squadrons in the new carrier’s air group will need a complete replacement of nearly all if not all pilots with fully-trained pilots in the reserve pool (trained pilots prepared in advance of the new CV’s arrival). Pillager still has the full KB alive and well in this campaign meaning there’s little or no space aboard front-line US carriers for “on the job” training. Except for a group of 12 US CVE supporting various operations in the South/SW Pacific area, I have all other US CVE continuously engaged in carrier pilot training.


Burma: I’ll eventually have a ground campaign in Burma despite the fact this will represent more of a diversion than a serious threat to Pillager’s Japanese holdings in mainland Asia. Russian entry is probably a bigger threat to Pillager in mainland Asia in our campaign than anything coming out of India.


South/SW Pacific: First, there is the matter of finishing up Buna (too big to ignore). My intelligence data and recon is indicating Pillager is building another nest of Japanese forces in Rabaul (35 detected LCU) which can be handled differently from the situation in New Guinea. Feni Islands, New Ireland (Kavieng & Namatanai), Mussau Island and Manus appear a possible path of advance beyond Rabaul – with preliminary operations against Milne Bay-Woodlark Island-Kiriwina Island preceeding this.

On New Guinea proper, I may take an Allied advance up to Lae and stop there. Pillager has a large portion of the former Japanese army in China transferred across various bases along the northern New Guinea coast (Lae and beyond) – my thought process tempting me to skip the northern coast of New Guinea altogether and let the Jap army quietly decay.


Central Pacific: Preparations underway for this theatre to become the “third pincer”, planned invasions in the southern Mitchells with eventual link-up to South Pacific. The Gilberts (including Tarawa), Canton Island and other points in the southern Central Pacific area have no strategic consequence within the context of Pillager’s and my campaign – these bases of no significant value in either Allied or Japanese hands. I have intelligence data indicating Pillager has evacuated Japanese LCU from some bases in this region.

Again… you’ve probably seen this but some air squadrons aboard British carriers are not British. I’ve been training Canadian AF fighter pilots for what appeared to be nothing – there’s actually a Canadian carrier-based fighter unit (this unit probably the only Canadian fighter squadron to ever see front-line action). A surplus of fully-trained New Zealand fighter pilots is proving equally useful in Royal Navy carrier service. At this time in my campaign the Royal Navy carrier force is in its infancy.

This group of B-29 units arriving in Aden (20th USAAF) went to Australia, these now appearing as part of night bombing raids in SW Pacific against Jap targets in Rabaul and various locations in New Guinea. Given the fall of China (etc) in my campaign, I concluded the B-29 was of marginal value in India and the Aden contingent was of more value in the Pacific theatres. Historically, they ended up in the Marianas anyway - sooner rather than later in my case.

Again +1. My experience in this campaign confirms this. Pillager is employing “E” type ASW ships mainly near the Japanese Home Islands plus off Korea and Formosa. It appears ASW capability aboard IJN ships in general improves in early 1944. The “E” type ASW ship replaced Ki-49 Helen air patrols as a primary nemesis for US patrol subs, not that Pillager has dropped using Helens in the ASW role.

While ample Allied fighter units from both Port Moresby and bases in NE Australia are available for LRCAP over Terapo, I’m not intending (in general) to oppose Japanese fighter sweeps with Allied CAP fighters except for those instances where it’s in my interest (and advantage) to do so. Current base status of Noumea – 2.31 million supply and 1.73 million fuel on hand.

Main body of transport convoy WP-206 (10 ships) arrives in Auckland from mainland US, convoy detachment WP-206B (7 ships) arrives in Suva. Allied night bombing activity over New Guinea or Rabaul remains suspended. Plane upgrades in USAAF 2E and 4E squadrons underway but completing very slowly due to long estimated repair times to bring new planes from damaged condition to operational status. 2E bomber conversions are from B-25C to B-25H Mitchells, 4E bomber conversions from B-24D1 to B-24J Liberators.

I have not been using reserve planes in front-line squadrons up to this point in the campaign. I did some research in the AE forums on reserve planes, assigning reserve planes from the replacement pool into front-line squadrons appears a possible solution to the plane repair/maintenance problem I’ve encountered. Until now I’ve ignored the use of assigning reserve planes in air units, though as an experiment with this I'm assigning 2 reserve planes (per squadron) to a number of USAAF 4E bomber units already using B-24J Liberators to determine if the use of reserve planes in air units helps the availability of planes for combat operations. If successful, plans are to expand the use of reserve planes to other Allied 2E and 4E squadrons where adequate numbers of replacement pool planes are available to do this.

Indian Ocean: British patrol subs in transit from Colombo to assigned areas in the Andaman Sea intercept Japanese PB at mid-sea. A number of small Japanese TF (usually 1 ship) have been detected periodically at or near this hex location, Pillager probably employing the TF as picket ships. This is the first known combat action between Allied planes or ships with Japanese ships operating as pickets in this sea area. South Pacific: Current base status of Ndeni – 253K supply on hand. Local (in-theatre) transport shipping to Ndeni from Auckland has been started, transferring supply and fuel northward from stockpiles in Auckland. Extensive use of local sea transport within South Pacific theatre area has been in operation for some time moving cargoes northward from stocks in Auckland to Luganville, Noumea and other bases on New Caledonia.

Central Pacific: Seven contacts reported between US patrol subs and Japanese carrier planes in sea areas due S of Truk, Jap planes in all but one contact identified as B6N2 Jill. Four of the seven reported contacts were at hex location 113, 118 (due S of Truk) with one US sub (SS Sealion), this sub also involved in AAR shown below. The AAR is a definite synch-bug attack as SS Sealion fired no torpedoes though all other reports are indicating one or multiple Japanese carrier(s) are actually at sea somewhere within this area – pending further information, my estimate is that Pillager may have sortied a Japanese carrier force (size and composition unknown) southward from Truk. Current movement direction of the Jap carrier(s) can be estimated at due south – based on position of the contacts Pillager could turn the carrier force toward either Rabaul (SW Pacific theatre area) or Lunga (South Pacific theatre area), the two possibilities equally likely at this time. AAR and situation map follow.

No visible Japanese forces or activity shown in detected base statuses at Eniwetok, Gardner Is and Truk. Radio signals intercepted from Truk may be related to departure of Japanese carrier(s) reported above to the south from Truk.


Australia: Some precautionary measures underway at locations in NE Australia in response to Japanese carrier plane sightings NNE of Rabaul. Evacuation of most reserve ships in port at Townsville plus in-theatre transport shipping operating between NE Australia and Port Moresby has been ordered, these ships moving southward. Allied transport shipping between NE Australia bases and Port Moresby has been suspended pending developments to the north. Allied transport shipping operations from Brisbane southward not affected at this time.

US Main Carrier force now re-formed after being stood down since the end of 5/44 for ship upgrades and minor repair involving nearly all its major ships. A number of additional US surface ships arriving as reinforcements also joined the Main Carrier force. The Main Carrier force has increased in size from 10 to 11 TF – each TF including 2 CV or 1 CV/1 CVL plus escorts up to 15 ships/TF. Total carrier strength of the Main Carrier force now at 14 CV, 8 CVL with one CV in reserve. Average flak strength per air combat TF in the 7500-8000+ range. US Main Carrier force departing Sydney (shipyard location used for repair/upgrades) this game turn. South Pacific: Some actions in response to Japanese carrier contacts south of Truk are already in effect for selected locations in South Pacific theatre area, additional actions are under consideration but not yet executed pending further developments of the situation further north. Current air strength at Ndeni includes 50 F4U Corsair and 9 PBY Catalina, all planes operational and activated.


Current base status of Ndeni – 258K supply on hand. One Allied in-theatre transport TF (7 xAK) is currently docked and unloading supply cargo in Ndeni, unloading operations of this TF stopped and the TF departing Ndeni immediately. Two additional in-theatre transport convoys currently bound for Ndeni have now turned back or diverted to other destinations. Ndeni is boarding up to ride out a hurricane.

Current base status of Luganville – 803K supply and 110K fuel on hand. Transport ship cargo unloading operations at Luganville continue for the moment. A convoy of empty transports (PW-200C, 8 ships) is departing Luganville this game turn for return to mainland US, additional empty in-theatre transports leaving to return to Auckland. A decision to continue or abort ship unloading at Luganville is planned for next game turn pending further developments to the north. LCT amphibious supply transport between Luganville and Ndeni is continuing, the KB can waste a few shots on them. Transport TF currently bound for Luganville (one in-theatre convoy plus convoy detachments WP-209C and 210C from the mainland US) are being diverted to other locations.

Current base status of Noumea – 2.39 million supply and 1.78 million fuel on hand. No transport ships are currently unloading cargo at Noumea. Convoy detachment WP-209A from mainland US bound for Noumea is proceeding as scheduled (expected arrival in Noumea on 7/06), a second small convoy bound for Noumea (BP-9) with a floating drydock has been diverted until “all clear”.

A group of multiple unidentified Japanese TF visible on game map at hex location 119, 128 (due W of Nauru Is). If Pillager has sortied the KB, this Japanese TF group is most likely the carriers. No information available on number of Japanese TF, number of ships, TF composition or movement heading. Based on known information in this report plus data from last game turn, probable estimated objective of Pillager’s KB sortie is the South Pacific theatre area with expected arrival at Ndeni in 2 days. Current situation map follows.
