Summary of Operations 7/05/44 (continued)

South Pacific: Actions in response to likely KB sortie continue.

Current base status of Ndeni – 260K supply on hand. All Allied transport shipping has departed Ndeni, arrival of KB at attack position to hit Ndeni base estimated in 2 days. I’m projecting Pillager will hit this base heavily, probably knocking out Ndeni airfield although supply and construction engineer elements on Ndeni are present in more than adequate quantities for reasonably quick repair. The 2 US Marine and one NZ F4U-1 Corsair squadrons (50 planes total) are expected to take heavy losses though they will claim Jap carrier planes as well. Plans are to extract the one USN patrol squadron (9 PBY-5 Catalina) from Ndeni at the last possible moment.

Current base status of Luganville – 816K supply and 110K fuel on hand. All cargo unloading operations at Luganville are being terminated. Transport shipping now at Luganville is departing immediately. LCT amphibious supply transport from Luganville to Ndeni is planned to continue. All operational USAAF B-24 Liberators at Luganville have evacuated southward except for 5 planes damaged/in maintenance. Six US Navy and Marine dive bombing squadrons (122 SBD Dauntless total) have transferred into Luganville airfield from New Caledonia (Koumac & Noumea).

Current base status of Noumea – 2.38 million supply and 1.78 million fuel on hand. Convoy detachment WP-209A (11 ships) arrives from mainland US and begins unloading. Cargo aboard WP-209A includes 44 Tank Bn, 27K supply and 57K fuel. Several transport TF’s diverted from Luganville and Ndeni are bound for Noumea, plans are to unload these TF and remove them from the area as quickly as possible.

Transport shipping arrivals and unloading at bases on Fiji (Suva & Nadi) continue on a normal basis for the moment. Convoy detachment WP-210B (5 ships) arrives in Suva from mainland US with 31K supply and 2500 fuel. Cargo unloading from WP-210B and detachment WP-209B (already in Suva) is planned to continue as long as possible.

Detected status of Jap base at Lunga – 55 aircraft (45 fighters), airfield damage 1, no ships in port, no Jap TF, 12 Jap LCU.

Summary of Operations 7/06/44

Central Pacific: One reported between US patrol sub and a Japanese air combat TF, this in an unexpected location SW of Eniwetok. Multiple Japanese TF are visible on the game map at this hex location – one TF identified as 8 ships including 2 CV, 2 CA with 130 planes (72 fighters, 57 bombers) moving on NE heading toward Eniwetok. Detected port size at Eniwetok is 3(2) with only one Jap LCU (101 JAAF AF Bn) known to be at Eniwetok per available intelligence data – none of this suggesting Eniwetok a significant Japanese naval base. Movement of Japanese carrier TF in this contact toward Eniwetok may be to evade further US sub contacts, no other definite explanation. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Eniwetok at 125,112 (SW of Eniwetok)

Japanese Ships
CV Kaga
CA Maya
CL Agano
CLAA Tenryu
DD Hatsuzuki
DD Akishimo
DD Hamanami
DD Kiyonami

Allied Ships
SS Sand Lance, hits 6 (system damage 14, float 21, returning to base at 16 kts)

SS Sand Lance launches 6 torpedoes at CV Kaga
DD Akishimo attacking submerged sub ....
DD Hamanami attacking submerged sub ....
DD Kiyonami fails to find sub and abandons search
DD Hamanami attacking submerged sub ....
DD Hamanami is out of ASW ammo
Escort abandons search for sub

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PBY Catalina naval search reports spotting unidentified Japanese TF (4 ships) at Nauru Island base hex – Jap TF at Nauru are not visible on game map.

A group of multiple unidentified Japanese TF remain visible near Nauru Is at hex location 124, 126 (WNW of Nauru Is), this group of Japanese TF moving closer to Nauru Is and pulled back slightly in an ENE direction. Still no confirmation on whether this Japanese TF group includes carriers or it is simply decoy. My overall estimate of this situation continues to be a probable KB sortie though Pillager may either be pulling his punches for the moment and/or considering whether to continue. In any case, my “carpet of submarines” is proving an effective early warning system. Presence of US patrol subs in large numbers also allows detection and approximate location/movement of KB by tracking contacts between Japanese naval search planes from KB carriers and US patrol subs – making it difficult if not nearly impossible in this situation for KB to launch carrier naval search planes without a high probability of giving away its movement and position.

Sigint entry for 7/06 reports heavy volume of intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Ponape, detected status of the base shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

US patrol sub intercepts lone Japanese PB near Ontong Java (ENE of Shortlands). AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Ontong Java at 116,128 (N of Ontong Java)

Japanese Ships
PB Kogyoku Maru

Allied Ships
SS Gurnard

SS Gurnard launches 2 torpedoes at PB Kogyoku Maru

PB Kogyoku Maru attacking submerged sub ....
Escort abandons search for sub

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 89 aircraft (all fighters), 15 Jap LCU, manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 72(129), light industry 9(32).

Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – 149 aircraft (all fighters), oil production 187(114), refinery 96(5), 24 Jap LCU.

Summary of Operations 7/06/44 (continued)

South Pacific: Actions already in effect for response to KB sortie continue, no new actions put into effect this game turn.

Current base status of Ndeni – 259K supply on hand, overall situation unchanged. Reported position of possible KB task forces near Nauru Is (above) place them 17 hexes from Ndeni and estimated 2 day movement from an attack position to hit Ndeni, these TF

Current base status of Luganville – 815K supply and 110K fuel on hand. No transport shipping remains in Luganville base at this time. Convoy detachment WP-206C (6 ships, 18K supply and 3K fuel still on board) is returning to Luganville to continue and complete unloading if possible.

Current base status of Noumea – 2.39 million supply and 1.81 million fuel on hand. Convoy detachment WP-209C (5 ships) from mainland US arrives in Noumea after diverted from Luganville with 31K supply and 2500 fuel cargo. An in-theatre transport convoy diverted from Ndeni with 159 US Base Force LCU aboard arrives in Noumea and unloads. Convoy BP-9 bound for Noumea from Pearl Harbor with a floating drydock (ARD) was diverted to Norfolk Is for holding. US Escort Carrier force departed Noumea for Australia in preparation for planned future operation.

Normal transport ship arrivals and unloading at bases on Fiji (Suva & Nadi) continues. Convoy detachment WP-209B completes unloading and departs, detachment WP-210B continues unloading cargo. An in-theatre transport TF diverted from Luganville is now unloading cargo at Nadi before returning to Auckland.

Main body of transport convoy WP-210 (6 ships) from mainland US arrives in Auckland after diverted from Noumea. Cargo includes 25K supply and 30K fuel, no LCU or air units.

Summary of Operations 7/07/44

Central Pacific: No reported contacts between US patrol subs and Japanese carrier planes, also no detected or visible signs of KB. A group of multiple unidentified Japanese TF remain visible at Nauru Is base hex, one TF in this group shown as 4 ships including an AP. A 7/07 Sigint entry indicates elements of Jap 22nd Infantry Division are moving to Nauru Is. Some possibility can be considered that a KB sortie is being used to cover transport of part of all of Jap 22 Division to Nauru – however, I do not anticipate covering movement of 22 Division to Nauru the sole mission of this KB sortie. Current available intelligence data reports Jap 22 Division is located at Abemama (Gilbert Islands) as of 5/10/44.

Summary of Operations 7/07/44 (continued)

South Pacific: Actions already in effect for response to KB sortie remain in effect, no new actions have been started. Breakup of WP transport convoys entering the South Pacific theatre area into detachments for arrival at Auckland, Suva, Noumea and Luganville has resumed – regular arrivals of detachments at these destinations estimated to begin again in approximately 7-10 days depending on location. The KB sortie imposed some disruption of WP convoy detachment arrivals but effects were minimal in terms of cargo that was diverted.

Current base status of Ndeni – 260K supply on hand, overall situation unchanged.

Current base status of Luganville – 815K supply and 110K fuel on hand. Convoy detachment WP-206C (6 ships, 18K supply and 3K fuel still on board) has returned to Luganville and now resumes unloading.

Current base status of Noumea – 2.41 million supply and 1.83 million fuel on hand. Cargo unloading from transport shipping diverted to Noumea from other destinations (Luganville, Ndeni) continues.

One or multiple Japanese TF(s) detected by a second US patrol sub nearby at hex location 115, 107 (ENE of Truk). Japanese TF are visible on the game map – one TF identified as having 8 ships including one CLAA, this possibly the TF with CV Kaga intercepted by another US patrol sub near Eniwetok on 7/06. Sigint entry for 7/08 reports 1 Yokosuka SNLF is now located at Nauru Is, this unit probably freshly landed on Nauru during the detected Jap transport operation still underway. Previous reported location of 1 Yokosuka SNLF was Canton Is as of 11/12/43.

My present situation estimate in this area is that Pillager has reinforced Japanese defensive positions on Nauru Island with LCU withdrawn from bases further south. Jap 22nd Infantry Division (previously reported at Abemama – Gilbert Islands) and 1 Yokosuka SNLF (above) are the newest reinforcements at Nauru. Japanese LCU already known to be on Nauru Is from previous intelligence reports include 2 Amphibious Brigade (as of 3/03/44) and 7 JNAF Coy (since 10/42). Detected port size at Nauru Island is 2(0), airfield size 2(2). The situation suggests Pillager is likely evacuating Japanese forces from some positions along the SE corner of the Japanese outer perimeter – notably the Ellice and Phoenix island groups and Baker Is. While these bases are expected to remain in Japanese control (I have no current plans to invade this area with Allied forces unless absolutely necessary), strategic value of these base locations to either side is considerably reduced at this point in the campaign.

At this point, it appears likely the KB sortie was intended to cover arrival of Japanese reinforcements at Nauru Is rather than an attack southward into Allied positions in the South Pacific theatre area. Current situation map follows.

Summary of Operations 7/10/44 (continued)

South Pacific: Local in-theatre transport shipping from Auckland to forward bases (Noumea, Luganville, Ndeni) has already resumed though it will take a period of time before transport TF departing Auckland reach assigned destinations. This delay not expected to be a problem as forward Allied bases in South Pacific theatre area have ample supply, fuel and other resources to conduct activities underway at each location. Cargo aboard in-theatre shipping primarily consists of supply and fuel points being pushed forward from existing stockpiles in Auckland. In-theatre transport ship traffic is expected to reach full volume in about 7-10 days.

Current base status of Ndeni – 259K supply on hand (unchanged).

Current base status of Luganville – 827K supply and 111K fuel on hand.

Current base status of Noumea – 2.46 million supply and 1.82 million fuel on hand (unchanged).

RANGOON FALLS, UNION JACK FLIES OVER BURMESE CAPITAL johnjohn

After a two month campaign, British, Indian, and Burmese forces retook the Capital of Burma, Rangoon this morning. Pegu also fell to Wingate's 3rd Special Forces Division (augmented). Japs on the run. A year of fighting in Burma has resulted in the recapture of most of the country and its important cities. When interviewed, General Slim hailed his forces and called this a special day. It is expected that reinforcements will soon arrive to bolster the British position.

I thought I may get this done by the end of April. It was close. I have 70K supply arriving in a couple of days that was stored aboard ship waiting in Chittagong for the green light to proceed. Another 100K is being sent from other bases. The strategic road is open between Magwe and Rangoon, so troops are hustling down the road. Eventually the 1st Aussie Corps will be transferred to SWPAC.

This basically shuts down the CBI front. Now the job is supply the Nationalists to hold the GO offensive in China. So far so good.

Richeliu was torpedoed on the way to Columbo, so she is now limping to Capetown for repairs. No CBI shipyard is large enough to repair her, and the big drydocks are too far away. (Darwin's is closest.) Another is a Perth, Port Morseby and one is on the way to Kwajalene after being damaged in a collision 80 miles out, forcing it back to PH for repairs. It is now repaired and on the way back. Another is three days out of the West Coast earmarked for Guam, but will wait in PH for Guam to be secured.

I have 5 carrier divisions, either 3 CVs or combos of CVs and CVLs at Marshall islands to support invasion of Marianas, planned for June. A sixth is assembling at PH.

Mac has moved to Sarmi and is building up the base. Hollandia and Aitep are being bypassed. So is Rabaul, Manus, Umboi Island and the rest of the Bismarks. SOPAC is in occupation mode, no further offensives planned.

Dacca has become the main training base for the B-29s. Ten sqdrns are in place with several more enroute. They are months away from being ready for raids.

A sub report has Junyo being torpedoed, but not sunk, Junyo operating around Amboy in the DEI. She has either made port, is enroute to a repair facility, or the report is in error. If she is limping home, she has avoided my subs in the area which are looking for her. I have no search planes that can cover that area, Darwin being closest operating airfield.

Summary of Operations 7/11/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 969K, fuel 83K.

Current status of Terapo base – 62K supply on hand. No reported air or ground combat activity this game turn in the Terapo bridgehead area.

No reported Allied or Japanese plane losses over New Guinea and the Rabaul area.

A mass Allied daylight ground attack bombing raid against Japanese LCU defending Buna using all available 2E & 4E bombers had been organized in the orders phase for the just completed game turn, this raid failed to launch for unknown reason(s). Allied daylight fighter sweeps over Buna were continued to accompany the bombing strike and failed to launch as well. Plans for this game turn are to continue the ground bombing strike on Buna using 4E bombers only, most 2E bombers re-assigned to daylight bombing of Buna port facilities. Allied fighter sweeps over Buna also set to continue. Primary objective of the 4E ground attack strike is disabling of elements in Japanese LCU defending Buna – it is unlikely at this point that Pillager has capability inside Buna to recover disabled Japanese LCU elements in significant numbers, additional Jap LCU elements disabled by any means would probably further erode remaining combat strength of Jap ground units inside Buna.

Detected status of Jap base at Buna – no reported port damage, 1 Jap TF (1 ship, visible on map as submarine TF), 19 Jap LCU. Unchanged from last game turn.

Detected status at Wau shows unidentified Japanese aircraft, 9 Jap LCU.

Detected base status at Rabaul – 236 aircraft (120 fighters), 9 Jap TF (41 ships, all small ship types), 2 ships in port, 35 Jap LCU. .

Update April 30, 1944 Johnjohn

CBI--As previously reported, the Burmese campaign is drawing to a close. On April 28 the Prome force, which had taken Prome in early April, took Rangoon. The 3rd Special Forces Division (6 bde of Chindits) had already done an end run on Taungoo and sieged Pegu. On April 28, after several weeks of intense fighting, took Pegu, thereby isolating the 100,000 men and 5 divisions concentrated at Taungoo. The 7 divisions and 4 armored brigades opposing this force have disengaged and are currently strat moving to Rangoon. The enemy is attempting to move on Pegu and open an escape route. They will not be able to do so. 175,000 supply are enroute to Rangoon with 2 million more stored at Diamond Hbr. A second wave of reinforcements from Mubasa are three days out from Rangoon. Ultimately the 1st Aussie Corps, three divisions and support troops, will be transferred to SWPAC. For all intents and purposes, the Burmese portion of the CBI theater is over.

IJA forces are attempting to force their way into central China, but have met with fierce opposition and have made no progress. Supply routes, cut when the war started, remain interrupted. Attempts to open the supply routes have failed as China forces make new forays into the undefended rear areas and cut roads. This has been successful much to the stout defense of the forces assembled at Wenchow, which has held off three enemy divisions for three years, enabling the small force of cut-off Chinese forces to sit on the roads cutting the IJA supply lines. The initial line of defense quickly thrown up at the start of the war is holding. The supply situation is rapidly improving as more lift arrives.

The B-29 squadrons, none ready for combat, are training at Dacca in India. They will be deployed when training improves capability. The XX USAAF Hq is enroute to join them, still in Aussie waters, but on the way.

DEI--Not much in the way of changes here. Additional subs are being deployed, but sinkings remain about the same. Having more success off Japan, sinking far more there than before. Losses are minimal and with Darwin operating as a forward base with a Drydock, damaged subs are returning to station faster than from Perth. Only the subs that cannot be repaired at Darwin are going to Perth to the shipyard there.

SWPAC--Mac has made it to Sarmi, bypassing Hollandia and Atipe, Manus, and the Bismarcks. Rabaul is constantly under air attack as is Umboi Island, the two main enemy bases in the area. Air attacks on Hollandia and Atipe have damaged the airfields to the point no aircraft is operating from either base. Three Taffy Groups of 4 CVE each are arriving to provide air cover and support further advances. (Note: this is as far as I got in the first attempt before the computer crash).

SOPAC--Lunga is the assembly point for the assault on Guam and Rota. This force is ready to board the assault ships and move out. Otherwise SOPAC is done. No further offensive operations are planned.

CENPAC--All efforts are going into the preparations for the assault on the Marianas. PH is the assembly point for the invasions of Tinian and Saipan. Both assault forces are in place and shipping is being sorted out. The planned assault for late May is on time. 5 CARDIVs are in the Marshalls waiting to support the invasion, which will have both assault groups combine there before proceeding on to the targets. The old grey ladies and older cruisers are at PH and will be assigned to bombardment duties. These ships will move forward soon. 4 million supply, 17 oilers, and 2.5 million fuel are at PH with goodly sums in other bases closer to the action. Plenty of sealift for the supplies and fuel are also in place. The oilers will combine with AEs and Taffy replenishment groups to follow the fleet as replenishment TFs. 9 F4U fighter groups are also at PH ready to move forward once the airbases are operational.

Plans: When the computer crash ended the first campaign, I was already in the Marianas, and the B-29s were bombing Rangoon. I am close to where that campaign ended and soon will be entering into new territory, never having played beyond July 44. The plan is to continue the historical dual thrust. Instead of Leyte, I will hit the Philippines from the south and go north, using landbased air power to support the offensive. Cenpac will go through the Bonins and then Okinawa in order to build up for the final invasion of Japan. Depending on how depleted the fleet is from supporting the Marianas campaign will do much to determine the future time table. Virtually all CVs and CVLs are due upgrades in June. I have no plans to transfer all but airforces to China from Burma/India. Eventually the Burmese forces will move on toward Bangkok, but not until they refit from this campaign, which will take some time.

As in real life, the outcome of this is not in doubt. Intel suggests that the enemy has a significant carrier force still available, though 4 of the fleet carriers have been sunk. This force has not made an appearance in two years, so it should be ready to oppose my efforts. The enemy air forces seem to be depleted. I am not encountering enemy aircraft in any numbers anywhere. Except for the DEI, there are not many places left to them.

I will begin work on the final two phases of the war involving Mac and Nimitz once the Marianas are secure.

johnjohn

Virtually all CVs and CVLs are due upgrades in June.

That will be some downtime for your Main Carrier force, estimate about 3-4 weeks depending on where you’re getting upgrades done, how far your ships need to travel to reach the upgrade site, and repair of minor damage to ships. I recently finished the 6/44 upgrade process which included some earlier ship upgrades that had not yet been done. I did the whole thing at Sydney – minor damage repair of 125-150 ships and all the upgrades, practically all of it using Pierside repair mode. What I really needed was the shipyard size in Sydney, very little repair activity actually requiring use of the shipyard itself.

quote:

Intel suggests that the enemy has a significant carrier force still available, though 4 of the fleet carriers have been sunk. This force has not made an appearance in two years, so it should be ready to oppose my efforts.

At this stage of the campaign (mid-1944) and later, the KB (or what there is of it) is as much if not more a “Fleet in Being” as it is a naval force that can actually be employed against the Allies. Against a human Japanese opponent, it’s likely this is a considerably more complex issue than playing vs the AI. Pillager in this campaign has a large and intact KB, the KB’s existence is the most relevant part of the equation. Simply knowing numbers of Japanese CV, CVL and CVE is not enough – the key item is your Japanese opponent’s (human or AI) ability to effectively send the KB into action. Intel information available to the Allies in AE is not sufficient to make a determination.

Japanese ability to operate the KB is dependent on a number of factors. First, quantity of fuel points available for Japanese naval and transport operations and where the fuel for this purpose is located, also recognizing the Jap player has to “budget” fuel point consumption and stockpiles between war production (economy) vs ship operation. The KB’s ability and range of operation is also dependent on availability and distribution of friendly base facilities (ports) and naval support LCU elements. A large KB in 1944 is not necessarily an asset to the JFB – a larger KB requires more fuel to operate it, more and larger naval base facilities to house and maintain it. Add to this the numbers of planes and (sufficiently trained) pilots needed for a larger KB. In this campaign, it’s known Pillager has a large intact KB, what is not known is Pillager’s capability to employ his KB in large-scale or prolonged operations (no amount of available Allied intel in AE adequately answers that question).

My “base” estimate on this question is that Pillager is capable of using his KB at full strength on at least one sortie. Beyond that one operation; it’s likely the availability of fuel point stocks on hand, Japanese replacement planes and pilots, and other support will likely begin eroding Pillager’s ability to operate his KB at full strength. No matter exactly how this estimate plays out, I’m expecting Pillager will be able to use his KB at full strength at least once (though how many times after that is an open question).

Once again a very accurate and precise analysis wneumann. I concur with your sense of what the KB can do in 1944 and how much of a liability the fleet is to the enemy at this point.

I think you are right re: pillager. My sense, which is far more macro than micro regarding your contest, is that Pillager cannot sustain his ops against a concentrated allied assault. You can sacrifice carrier for carrier, he cannot. You can sustain carrier ops nearly indefinitely with replenishment groups using the AEs, AOs, and CVEs; he cannot. He may have considerable force on some of the islands, but you can leapfrog them. It is the old cut off the head the arms go limp idea. By now your ability to concentrate force greatly exceeds his.

The question remains, where to do it? The probable answer is the Gilberts and Marshalls in that none of the islands can hold a large garrison for long and there is no support available outside the islands. It also exposes the KB which would have to operate at long range (once Makin and Tarawa are secure and air fields built up. Your fighters and bombers will make air support difficult if not impossible for the enemy in a matter of days or weeks.) It is sorta the 800 lb gorilla rule. He cant stop that Gorilla once it is in the room. And he would have no help except for what is already there. The KB would be a sitting duck and I suspect pillager knows that. My guess is he would hold it back and not oppose landings in the Gilberts and later the Marshalls too vigorously.

A thrust into the Solomons runs into the problem that the enemy has a supply line back to Rabaul. The Canal is far enough down the chain to be isolated, but moving up would take time and the KB could operate there guaranteed Land Based air support.

Going up Mac's path is the most difficult. Pillager has significant force that can be concentrated there, making forward progress nigh impossible.

I offer that for what it is worth. I know that you have considered your options carefully and the intentions of how your opponent plays. I believe that your eventual thrust into the Central Pacific will go well, whether it comes first or last. My guess too, since this is chess match, is that once you move forward aggressively you will force the game to its conclusion. You may never stand in Tokyo, but you will be victorious.
