Summary of Operations 7/28/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – 1.01 million supply and 93K fuel on hand (no change).

Current status of Terapo base – 136K supply and 7500 fuel on hand, airfield at Terapo now expanded to size 5(5). A group of 4 USAAF fighter squadrons (all P-47 Thunderbolt) plus one US Marine squadron (F4U-1 Corsair) are being prepped for transfer into Terapo airfield as the initial air contingent for this base. Air base force LCU and aviation support already in place at Terapo, mostly delivered in the recent amphibious transport operation. Three of the USAAF squadrons designated for Terapo now in process of conversion from training units to front-line combat service, this requiring a full swap of pilots and aircraft in the three air units. Completion of the conversion process plus transfer of the air units north from Melbourne (current location) estimated at 6-7 days.

No reported air or ground combat activity this game turn in the Terapo bridgehead area.

No reported Allied or Japanese aircraft losses over locations in New Guinea or Rabaul.

USAAF fighter sweeps have been attempted over Japanese airfields at Lae and Wau in the last several game turns. These missions either failed to launch or did not find any Japanese CAP fighters over target, difficult to determine exactly which as there has been no reported activity by Jap fighter planes over eastern New Guinea area.

Johnjohn comment:

Excellent use of the main US carrier fleet in Truk raid. Unfortunate that targets of opportunity were low, but confirms that enemy is not keeping resources in places where raids could occur. I agree with your analysis of possible fleet base for KB and use of KB. Looks to me that a lot of resources are committed by enemy in places that could be bypassed eventually. I shudder at the thought of the major buildup in the Marianas, thinking of whether you could bypass it. If you were to do so, then Truk would become important as a main naval base for US operations. That would allow a direct move to Yap and then the Bonins and Marcus, thus isolating all that men and material stacked in the Marianas. Yap would give you the option to go north (Bonin Islands) or west to the Philippines.

The map view shows that the PNG situation is a slow slog. In the next year you will have the fleet units available to start leaping around fairly easily. The pressure you continue to exert is going to cause severe supply problems for the enemy. Things to think about, especially given the skill with which pillager is handling the enemy forces.

I have continued to put pressure on the enemy in Burma in my game. The enemy is withdrawing through Thailand and is going to escape with considerable force. I have explored how to cut of the retreat, but the fact is I do not have the force to effectively do so. I can drop parachute Chindits to cut the railroad from the hinterland to Bangkok, but the fact is that force cannot stop 5 divisions running for their lives. Intel has Bangkok pretty much undefended at this point, but I cannot reach that far. Plan to pull up at Moulemain and hold there to refit. Be at least a year before any further significant operational advance takes place.

I have the Marianas invasion at sea, which should land in late May. Just waiting on stragglers to get into position off Ewintok for the run in. 1st class invasion task forces hold two divisions each for Guam, Tinian and Saipan, with three more headed to Saipan, while 2nd class invasion forces will hit Rota and 3rd class bring up the reserve (APA/AKA types = 1st class, AP/AK types 2nd class, and xAP/xAK 3rd class. Landing craft task forces are operating separately as landing craft and supplementing the 1st class forces. All armor is aboard the LSTs as are the vehicle components of the 1st class divisions, components which did not load on the APAs. Additional early supply is also on LC task forces. The LCI types are headed to Guam and will be used to ferry in the reserves. Intel has 5 enemy divisions on Saipan. Guam Rota loaded at Lunga while Tinian Saipan loaded at PH with some units left in the Marshalls added to the mix. It should be fun to see how this goes. It is the biggest invasion I have mounted, and I am unsure if I should have held back the Saipan force until the island could be softened up.

All B29 squadrons are training in India. They are no where near ready for operational status. The Free French Battleship Richeleu was torpedoed enroute to Columbo and is now at South Africa for four months of needed repairs. I originally sent three US CLs to augment the UK Carrier Force but reconsidered and attached them to Franklin at Balboa. That force is now enroute to PH eta end of May to join two other carriers at PH to become CARDIV6.

The turns are very long and complicated. But you know this. It is May 15, 1944 for me.

respectfully,

John (johnjohn)

Some general thoughts on strategic views and a breakdown by geographic area.

To begin with, there are more than a few places I would be better off bypassing in the Pacific theatres. But… you can’t island hop around everything. Also, there’s a need for the Allies to take some medium to large size forward bases as major naval and airfield facilities for directly supporting front line action.

The collapse of China in this campaign has huge consequences in the Pacific theatres. Medium size to larger Pacific bases that would otherwise be lightly or moderately defended have large Japanese LCU garrisons that in many cases include multiple divisions. Not all Jap reinforcements came from China. Pillager has shipped in many LCU arriving as reinforcements in the Home Islands plus a smaller number from the Kwantung Army (Manchuria). My intel on identity and known locations of Japanese LCU in Pillager’s OOB is extensive (estimated 80-90% accuracy). I have a very good idea of what’s in front of me and where it is.

At this point in the campaign, the KB is becoming less of a concern. Both Pillager and I are likely experiencing the difficulties of having and operating large carrier fleets given not a single CV on either side has been sunk (or at least confirmed sunk) to date. Large carrier fleets require more fuel, more escort ships in Air Combat TF’s, more planes and trained pilots to occupy all those flight decks.

The Allied side (US) has a considerable advantage with the large carrier fleet issue as it has access to more fuel, more suitable escort ships for use in Air Combat TF’s. Allied carrier plane losses for me have been very light, making supply of replacement planes for both the Escort and Main Carrier forces relatively simple. However, higher levels of plane losses could produce some bottlenecks. Trained pilots for US carriers has not been an issue so far – trained bombing and torpedo pilots are in ample supply, though quantities of trained CV fighter pilots is a bit tighter.

For Pillager, operating the KB is probably a more difficult proposition. Having and supporting all those flight decks is easily more a liability than an asset. More ships need more fuel (and we know how significant fuel is to JFB’s). The IJN likely doesn’t have the numbers of suitable escort ships (BB, cruisers and DD) to properly cover all those flight decks. Then the matter of planes and pilots… more flight decks means more of these needed. Pillager has employed KB on several sorties against Allied forces in New Guinea (the most recent a few turns ago), the KB sorties resulting in large Japanese plane and pilot losses to Allied CAP fighters (especially as most of these air actions occurred over Allied-controlled territory). Pillager can probably replace the planes easily (his Jap industry likely has the capacity), replacing trained Jap “first string” carrier pilots in those downed planes might be another story. How good is Pillager’s training system for Japanese pilots and is it large/extensive enough to cover the losses in a timely fashion? I’m easily covering Allied pilot losses so far, can the same be said for Pillager?

Quality and quantity of replacement carrier pilots (all types) could easily decide the carrier war. I’m taking the view that Japanese plane and pilot attrition is evolving into a more lucrative target than sinking KB carrier decks. Pillager has one good shot with the KB (and he’s saving it). Once that shot is taken, KB’s value in the rest of the campaign decreases significantly regardless of the number of surviving Japanese flight decks post-action. The increasing scarcity of replacement Jap carrier planes and/or fully trained pilots (more likely pilots) will likely result in that.

Closing out this subject… Pillager is almost definitely operating the KB as a fleet–in-being. Much of his tactical movement of KB (especially off New Guinea) appears intended to keeping it beyond the reach of effective Allied attack.

On to the geography… Some of the strategic issues I’m seeing by geographic area.

New Guinea – Buna was too big a thorn to ignore. Most bases along the northern coast of New Guinea from Madang west may be worth ignoring. Pillager has garrisoned nearly all these bases with reinforcements (many from China). An Allied land advance along the northern coast would likely push a pile of Japanese LCU westward that would slowly grow as the Allies capture each base. Plans at this point are likely stopping the Allied advance in the Lae area.

Rabaul – Detected status of Rabaul shows 38 Japanese LCU, 15 of them identified in my intel data. While many of them are flak and engineer units, an Allied ground attack on Rabaul could easily match if not exceed the quagmire at Buna.

A more likely path of advance bypassing Rabaul could be more useful. Bases with airfields expandable to size 8-9 exist at Kavieng, New Hanover Is, Mussau Is and Manus. These bases isolate Rabaul and also provide airfields where B-29’s can reach Babeldaob across to the southern Marianas plus Truk. This advance would also cut in two Pillager’s Rabaul-Solomon Islands position. Preparation for Allied attacks on Milne Bay, Woodlark and nearby islands for this advance is already underway.

Solomon Islands – Probably bypass everything from Shortlands eastward. Pillager has a sizable base complex created at Lunga-Tulagi already of limited value to either side.

Truk – This is tempting and useful as an Allied air base and jumping off point until you look at Truk Naval Fortress (lots of CD guns and big ones). Truk Naval Fort is daunting enough to a shore bombardment TF not to mention an amphibious assault. Truk might be a worthwhile objective if it can be taken quickly before the Jap CD guns get too many shots (not likely).

Marianas – Pillager has well-established positions with developed airfields at all major bases in the southern area (Guam, Tinian, Saipan) with known multi-division garrisons. Bases in the northern area (Pagan) are smaller and appear less or undeveloped, this possibly an entry point for Allied attack.

Yap, Ulithi, Babeldaob – All probably well-developed Jap defensive positions. This area still an option for Allied advance to flank Japanese positions in the southern Marianas.

Nauru Island – Pillager has recently dispatched LCU reinforcement here, for some reason on his priority list. Allied LCU in the South Pacific theatre have been prepping to assault Nauru. Plans have been underway for Nauru & Ocean Islands plus an assault on Mili and occupation of Makin (this dot hex base remained Allied-controlled). This series of actions also brings Central Pacific theatre into action as the “third pincer” of the US Pacific offensives.

Marshalls – This area is likely of less significance in Pillager’s current Japanese defensive scheme given its forward location relative to the second main Jap perimeter line (Marianas-Yap-Ulithi-Babeldaob-western New Guinea). Not to say that Pillager has left the Marshalls undefended. Current plans are to pick and choose those objectives with relatively light Japanese defenses also having some value once in Allied control.

Moving on to the Far East….

Burma & Southeast Asia – This area has drawn its share of Japanese LCU reinforcements from China. My estimate is that Allied air forces from India could easily gain superiority in this region once forward airfields are established, the balance of Allied vs Japanese ground forces a bit different. My intel data indicates Pillager has garrisoned coastal bases from Rangoon eastward through Thailand and into Malaya making an Allied amphibious operation a bit dicey. Given a large quantity of British amphibious shipping was transferred to Australia for the Pacific theatres, some time and effort would be needed to re-establish amphibious sea forces for Southeast Asia. Plans are underway to eventually launch an Allied ground offensive into Burma. Current PP priority is to save up as much as possible to transfer Indian LCU (particularly divisions) from restricted to unrestricted command. Plus there’s a modest “Free Chinese” army and air force established in India – Chinese ground forces planned to be employed on the northern flank of any Allied ground offensive into Burma (though the Chinese army not large enough for any significant advance into southern China proper).

DEI – Pillager has also reinforced Japanese ground forces occupying key points in the DEI, particularly Java and Sumatra. My intel data indicating Japanese LCU garrisons in bases along southern coasts of both Java and Sumatra, again difficult for the current state of Allied amphibious forces available in Southeast Asia theatre. I have considered Darwin as an “opening” but (at least for the moment) the effort of developing this base as a possible jumping off point for Allied attacks into the DEI represents a diversion of resources that might be detrimental to other activity though doing this is not impossible.

The siege at Buna in this campaign has been quite instructive from my perspective and likely to be repeated elsewhere in some form. From a defender’s standpoint, the situation inside Buna is probably not much different from the Chinese experience in the ground action at Chungking in 1943. Pillager has had considerable opportunity to build maximum fortification levels at all the above locations. I’m basically assuming that any significant objective Allied forces attack in a ground action will have maximum forts.

Another point to keep in mind… With all the LCU reinforcements Pillager has drawn from China and elsewhere to defend forward bases, I’m attacking these with the same fixed number of Allied LCU which must be employed over and over again. Allied LCU element losses, disruption, fatigue, etc takes on more significance than a straight historical campaign. High LCU element losses, disruption, fatigue involve a longer and more expensive recovery time in Allied units – this especially apparent at Buna.

Summary of Operations 7/29/44 (continued)

South Pacific: Current base status of Ndeni – 321K supply and 6900 fuel on hand. Small transport convoy arrives at Ndeni from Auckland with C Detachment USN Port Svc (reinforce aviation and naval support elements) plus supply cargo. Several LCU from the Ndeni invasion force continue drawing new elements from replacement pools.

Current base status of Luganville – 1.00 million supply and 136K fuel on hand.

Current base status of Noumea – 2.79 million supply and 2.02 million fuel on hand. Replenishment TF’s supporting US Main Carrier force during Truk operation have arrived at Noumea and Luganville. AO from replenishment TF’s are unloading remaining fuel cargoes into base stockpiles at Noumea and Luganville. Replenishment TF’s will return to Auckland after fuel unloading is completed to repair minor ship damage and full re-loading of fuel cargo from stockpiles in Auckland.

Convoy detachment WP-229B (5 ships) arrives at Suva from mainland US, cargo includes 31K supply and 2000 fuel. Other detachments of convoy WP-225 still enroute to Noumea and Luganville.

Remaining stockpiles on hand in Auckland include 7.21 million supply and 1.66 million fuel, the bulk of these stocks gradually being drawn for loading aboard in-theatre transport from Auckland to forward base locations (Noumea, Luganville, Suva, Ndeni). Most of an additional stockpile located in Wellington (currently 732K supply & 577K fuel) is also planned to be drawn and transferred forward as in-theatre transport capacity permits. Nearly all transport ships from WP convoys arriving in South Pacific theatre from mainland US have been diverted (as convoy detachments) to Noumea, Luganville and Suva rather than dispatched into New Zealand ports.

Johnjohn again commenting:

I concur with your analysis of the KB and its impact. Your ability to maintain carrier ops nearly indefinitely really is an allied advantage.

As for strategy, it looks like you have it well identified with all its attendant problems. I am applying the Union (Abe Lincoln) approach, which is to contain the enemy and push the edges to see what gives and to push harder where it gives.

You are absolutely correct in that you cannot transfer the ETO to the Pacific like Pillager can the CBI forces to the Pacific. That is why I suggested the possibility of staying on the edges. Getting between the home islands and the outposts will really crimp supply and movement. I like the option of Yap/Palaus because it divides the enemy into two halves, even if it is a tough nut to crack. By now you should have enough APA types to lift 6 divisions. That too is a great advantage. And it will only get better. When the situation presents itself, you will be able to bring considerable force to the beach, enough to take one target. Unfortunately, as you stated, those same guys need 4-6 months to prepare for another invasion, so it remains running the ball behind your great big line for a few yards at a time.

I don't envy you. Pillager is well entrenched and anything you do will be with considerable risk attached. The good news is that he cannot move around much once you arrive. So you know you can isolate and encircle and ignore relatively safely. I have used the tactic to secure a base, build it up, and bomb the snot out of the large enemy garrison. My pilots get needed combat experience and the enemy gets pounded. A win win all around. I then move on to the next objective. Of course, where you can go is limited in that most everything is well defended. Pick one, take it, and air superiority will do the rest. (I have inflected 5,000 casualties amongst the fleeing IJA divisions and support LCUs in Burma, soon to be Thailand.) Those are guys they have to replace. I have not expended a single grunt inflicting that harm. But the fact is, there is only so much allied force and once expended, everything stops for a while. You are wise to be deliberate.

You lengthy analysis and explanation is very helpful.

Thx John

I appear to be approaching my own limit as to how many CV can be properly maintained for front-line combat operation. Planes, fuel and escort ships not the issues. Trained pilots are the bottleneck, particularly fully-trained fighter pilots for VF squadrons. My definition of fully trained (for fighters) being 60+ experience (preferably 65+) with air-to-air and strafing skill levels both at 70+. Fully trained as defined here requires three tiers of training; air-to-air and strafing skills plus time flying CAP to bring up experience levels. Completing the 3 tiers of training requires moving individual pilots through 3 separate training air units. Much of the CAP training involving flying CAP missions off CVE flight decks from an Air Combat TF sailing up and down San Francisco bay. Fully trained pilots for dive & torpedo bombing carrier squadrons in more than adequate supply. This situation largely the result of few or no USN fighter units (other than those aboard CV) through most of 1942-43 that could be used for fighter pilot training, this causing a late start of large-scale fighter pilot training for USN. At this point, plans are under consideration for at least two CV/CVL being employed or re-employed (at least short-term) as pilot training ships, probably operating not too far behind the front lines in the event these CV/CVL become needed to replace ship losses. Given I currently have 23 carriers (15 CV, 8 CVL) fully stocked (and maintainable) for front-line combat service, I see little point in reinforcing this with additional flight decks operating planes with less than fully trained pilots.

Pillager probably does not have this degree of luxury without significantly weakening KB, though he too could divert some Japanese flight decks for training replacement pilots if he has not already done so (this not entirely impossible).

Footnotes: I'm anticipating Pillager will rely heavily on the kamikaze when availability of this option is triggered. I've already started looking at some research and planning of Allied countermeasures.

Australia: Some amphibious transport ships and parts of US Escort Carrier force now arriving at Australian ports. Damaged ships are being distributed between shipyards for various modes of repair. Returning CVE’s in Escort Carrier force also drawing replacements for plane and pilot losses. Fighter squadrons aboard returning CVE in the Escort Carrier force had some aircraft destroyed in action but few pilot losses, these units holding up quite well vs the KB. Plane and pilot losses for returning CVE fighter units similar to those in fighter squadrons aboard CVE sunk at Terapo (planes & pilots in these air units recovered on shore at Terapo airfield when their ships were lost). Fighter squadrons from sunk CVE in the Terapo action rebuilding in Australia for (probable) eventual use as LBA training units for carrier fighter pilots.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon – 96 aircraft (all fighters), 1 Jap TF (probable oil/fuel transport), 15 Jap LCU, manpower 4(0), resources 21(0), refinery 72(129), light industry 9(32).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-85 (27 ships) departing for Australia via Capetown with 124K supply cargo.

Australia: Additional elements of US Escort Carrier force plus US Main Carrier force arrives at Australian ports. Three CVE of the Escort Carrier force receiving heavier damage in Terapo operation reach port and enter repair, estimated time of repair of these CVE between 17-28 days.

Nearly all returning ships in US Main Carrier force requiring repair of “wear and tear” system and engine damage levels, estimated time of repair completion maximum 10 days (many ships considerably less). Current plans are to apply 7/44 ship upgrades to 3 South Dakota BB plus 8/44 updates in other ships as time and the overall situation allow. Actual plane and pilot losses from all carrier squadrons and float plane air units (BB and cruisers) in the Main Carrier force were assessed as individual ships were disbanded for repair. Pilot losses overall were lighter than plane losses reported in AAR, most combat losses (mainly at Rabaul) involving only planes not pilots. Fighter plane losses in VF squadrons slightly below reported in AAR, most of these actually ops losses than reported in AAR as destroyed air-to-air. Actual numbers of destroyed float planes (spotters) from BB and cruisers escorting the Main Carrier force much lower than plane losses indicated in game turn reports.

DEI: US patrol sub operating in western Java Sea between Palembang and Singapore intercepts small Jap transport. SS Capelin also in reported contact with Jap Ki-49 Helen air patrol. AAR follows.

US patrol sub in southern entrance to Makassar Strait intercepts what appears as two separate Japanese surface combat TF’s. No definite information available on movement direction of the two Jap TF but a 8/01 Sigint report entry indicating heavy volume of Jap radio transmissions from Soerabaja (8 hexes from hex location of the actions below) suggest the TF may have departed Soerabaja this game turn. The Sigint report entry also indicates the Jap surface combat TF’s possibly moving northward through Makassar Strait. If true, Pillager is moving these ships out of the rear area to a forward naval base. AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 8/02/44 (continued)

Central Pacific: Allied light surface naval TF raids Nauru Is base hex. A spotting report on 7/31 from a US patrol sub operating north of the western Solomons revealed a Japanese transport TF (4-5 ships, visible on map, possible troop cargo) moving on an E heading with a projected destination of Nauru Is. A small Allied surface naval TF was assembled and dispatched to Nauru on the chance of intercepting the Jap transports. Luganville and Ndeni ports proving quite useful as ship refueling sites for this type of operation. Allied TF encountered the expected Jap midget sub on arrival at Nauru and identified presence of Jap LBA bombers based in the Nauru/Ocean Island area as well as G4M2a Betty strikes at longer range from unknown airfield(s). Two Jap D3A1 Val reported destroyed in naval strike actions (both flak). Three other Jap TF (12 ships total, one TF identified with MGB’s) detected and visible in Nauru base hex. AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 8/03/44 (continued)

Central Pacific: Allied surface naval TF remained in Nauru Island base hex, engaged and sank another Jap midget sub. Four Japanese TF (16 ships) total remain detected and visible on the game map in Nauru base hex – these spotted by floatplanes from Allied CL but none of them taken on by the Allied TF. One of the Japanese TF contains 4 ships (including 2 MTB), a second Jap TF with 8 ships including 3 PG. The two other Japanese TF in Nauru are unidentified. Naval air strikes against the Allied TF by Japanese LBA bombers continued, no significant damage to Allied ships.

Orders issued for the Allied surface TF to break off action at Nauru Is and return to base. After two game turns in Nauru with no significant results, the risk of continued presence of Allied surface naval units stationary in Nauru base hex exceeds any likely benefit. Combat Events report entries (floatplane sightings) and AAR’s follow.
