Summary of Operations 3/15/42

South Pacific: Contact has been lost with the KB in the sea area S of Noumea. US sub S-35 has reached a position near (SE of) the KB’s spotted location on 3/14. Allied naval search patrols have set up full coverage of the sea area between Auckland and Suva – no reported contacts.

Convoy WP-1 (two AK, one TK) from the US West Coast originally bound for Auckland has been split up and now been diverted to deliver its cargo to NZ bases at Wellington and Christchurch. A lone AK with fuel cargo also bound for Auckland was diverted to Tahiti to deliver its cargo there. No other significant Allied transport ships are operating within a 12-15 hex radius of the KB’s last position.

A contact was reported between a US sub and Japanese transport TF northeast of Truk. AAR follows.

Summary of Operations 3/20/42

Pearl Harbor: Two AK’s with moderate damage arrived in Pearl Harbor this game turn after being detached from transport convoy WP-2 currently enroute from the US West Coast to New Zealand. Damage to the two ships were from unknown causes – convoy WP-2 had no reported combat AAR’s or contact with Japanese forces (of any kind). The level of damage to the two AK’s is greater than what would be expected from the usual wear and tear during sea movement at a normal movement rate. I had detached the two AK from the convoy due to reduced movement speed resulting from their damage.

The two ships will undergo shipyard repair at Pearl once their supply point cargoes are unloaded. Damage levels of the two AK are as follows

AK Wind Rush - system damage 1, float 14, engine 17
AK Alcoa Polaris - system damage 2, float 5, engine 10

My only theory behind this damage is the two ships received an “unlucky die roll” in a determination for operational damage at sea during a naval movement phase. While something like this is very unusual, it no doubt can happen. The 16 transport ships remaining in convoy WP-2 are continuing their transit with very minor or no system damage.

North Pacific: A small transport convoy (3 ships) arrived at Dutch Harbor, now unloading 210 Coast AA Rgt and 6800 supply. This is the initial phase of a planned build-up of Dutch Harbor over the long term.

South Pacific: Coastwatcher report for 3/19 indicates a Jap AKE is now located in Rabaul. Pillager appears to be at some stage of preparing and/or using Rabaul as a naval replenishment base.

Summary of Operations 3/21/42

South Pacific: Sigint report entries for 3/20 indicate Japanese radio transmissions intercepted from Guam, Rabaul and Truk. None of the three locations show any detected on-map Jap forces or activity, though (not surprisingly), undetermined Japanese ships and aircraft are shown to be based in all three locations.

SW Pacific: A small force of G3M Nell bombers (5 planes) launch an airfield strike against Horn Is. Very minor damage to airfield facilities on Horn Is reported. It appears the Jap bombers in this raid are operating from Port Moresby.

Current supply situation on Horn Is is critical, no supply points remain on hand. A small squadron of USAAF transport planes (6 C-47’s) has been located in Brisbane. The squadron is currently on training and the C-47’s may be able to airlift supply into Horn Is from Cairns at their maximum range (12 hexes). With three Australian LCU’s now based on Horn Is (all starting the game there), the possibility of simultaneously removing one or more LCU(s) from Horn Is via airlift is under consideration – both to simplify the supply situation and possibly salvage at least one of these LCU in the event Pillager launches a successful invasion of Horn Is. At this time a Japanese move against Horn Is should be considered a possibility, though I’m sure it’s not the first item on Pillager’s list of priorities.

DEI: Japanese capture Makassar. AAR’s follow.

Dutch PT boat TM-11 is now at Mataram (out of fuel & ammunition) and heading for Denpassar. Denpassar and Pamekasan are the only remaining Allied-controlled bases in the area with fuel points on hand. TM-11 has movement orders to "drift with the tides" into Denpassar, refuel, and continue its voyage to oblivion. Odds of TM-11 reaching Australia are nil, due at the very least to no remaining bases under Allied control with fuel stocks between its current location and Darwin.

Palembang remains in Dutch control. A light volume of Japanese air strikes continue to be reported against Dutch LCU’s holding Palembang. One Japanese LCU is detected in Praboemoelih base hex (adjacent to and SE of Palembang) - this LCU believed to be 113 Infantry Rgt which captured Praboemoelih on 3/17. Dutch LCU assault strength in Palembang is 223 plus 90 engineer squads. While far from enough to hold Palembang against a determined Japanese ground assault, it may be enough where Pillager will need to take or consider taking my defense of Palembang seriously. If I can make him (Pillager) waste time and supply on objectives the Japanese will take anyway, inflict some casualties on Jap forces (however modest), and perform “scorched earth” on oil and/or resource facilities he needs, all the better.

Philippines: A total of eight Japanese LCU’s detected on Luzon (three at Clark Field , five in Manila), plus one (now undetected) Jap LCU advancing southward towards Legaspi. At least three of the Jap LCU’s on Luzon are known to be combat divisions.

Singapore: A Japanese TF including two carriers (Baby KB?) is detected in Singapore, along with 98 ships at anchor. 17 Japanese LCU’s are indicated in the detected status of Singapore base. It also appears that repair activity by Jap engineer LCU’s on damaged facilities in Singapore may now be underway.

Burma: Remains quiet. Sigint report entry for 3/21 plus entries in previous Sigint reports indicate Pillager is attempting to transport several Jap LCU’s by sea into Rangoon. Two Allied subs remain on patrol off Rangoon.

Known combat strength of the Japanese army currently on the ground in Burma includes 33 Division and 1 Raiding Rgt - plus other possible Jap LCU(s) not detected or identified at this time. Identities of Jap LCU’s currently known to be in transit by sea and headed to Burma (via Rangoon) include 2 Raiding and 56 Recon Rgts.

China: A substantial amount of Japanese ground activity in southern China. Pakhoi captured this game turn (abandoned by Chinese forces in late February after the fall of Liuchow). Also Japanese ground attacks at Nanning and along the Liuchow-Tuyun rail line. AAR’s follow.

The next flashpoint on the Chinese central front is the Japanese bridgehead across the river line near Chihkiang.

Chinese LCU’s withdrawing from Changteh towards this river crossing were deflected into Chihkiang base in a retreat that resulted from ground combat outside Chihkiang. This retreat after combat left the path open for Pillager to send a Jap LCU (only one Jap unit is detected in the bridgehead as of now) across the river line to seize this bridgehead before other Chinese LCU’s could move from Chihkiang to cover the river crossing.

In the long-term, this bridgehead is expected to have serious consequences for Chinese defence on the central front. Current situation map of central China follows.

SW Pacific: G3M Nell bombers from Port Moresby (2 planes) continue airfield strikes against Horn Is. No damage or casualties reported.

DEI: Light Jap bombing raid activity over Palembang. Otherwise quiet.

Philippines: On-hand supply point stocks at Bataan down to 27K, it's dropped off somewhat. It's likely the cause is lots of Allied LCU's sitting there eating up rations. I'd rather have Pillager attack Bataan and give him a few casualties instead of the Japanese just sitting back and waiting until the place is starved out. At this time, still only three Jap LCU's at Clark Field. Though I also sucked every possible supply point on Luzon into Bataan, so Pillager does have to ship his own supply in before launching a serious attack.

Australia, Burma, India, China: All reporting quiet this game turn.

Summary of Operations 3/23/42

For the most part it's been pretty quiet the last few game turns. Several questions can be raised on the present state of Japanese progress, though it is still early and Pillager has considerable time remaining to prepare and execute Japanese offensive moves. At face value, the rate of Pillager's Japanese advance in our current AE match is slower compared to our previous PBEM match in CHS. It's tempting to analyze and reach conclusions. At the same time it would be a considerable risk for an Allied player to make assumptions (let alone act upon them) based on any conclusion reached from an analysis of Japanese progress at this stage of the game. Especially true for Allied players without extensive knowledge and experience of playing the Japanese side.

Pillager did start out rather agressively in 12/41. This was true with regards to - (1) naval actions against Allied ships in the Philippines and northern DEI attempting to escape the Japanese advance, (2) a relatively quick conquest of Malaya and Singapore, (3) early moves into the Gilberts and the capture of Baker & Canton Islands, (4) advances into northern areas of the DEI including Tarakan and Balikpapan.

Then it all began to slow down...

(a) Wake Is held out for awhile before it fell on the second try.

(b) A later invasion of the Philippines. Was this a planned delay on Pillager's part, or there other factors?

(c) The DEI is not yet a done deal. Palembang still in Dutch control (at least for a short time longer). Also a lot of mop-up operations remain against smaller bases.

(d) While Port Moresby, Rabaul and much of the Solomons is Japanese-controlled or can be easily brought under Japanese control, the Japanese advance has not been a rapid one.

Could there be some factors behind this? Some possibilities...

(1) Shortage of available Japanese LCU's for offensive operations? Doubt it.

(2) Shortage of available transport ship capacity for a continuous sequence of amphibious operations? Maybe, but unlikely.

(3) Logistical bottlenecks (i.e. supply and fuel)? This is possible. While I'm experiencing few if any supply or fuel shortages, Allied supply and fuel logistics in AE is on a much less abundant scale compared to past experience in WitP. This being true, it's likely that Pillager may be experiencing logistical bottlenecks of his own on the Japanese side. Are these bottlenecks severe enough to slow down and/or restrict the scale of Japanese offensive operations? I would view this as the factor most likely to be true. In any event, Pillager's bottleneck(s) have not been imposed by any Allied action on my part.

(4) Allied opposition? Pretty unlikely. I do not have the Allied forces, nor have Allied forces so far imposed any significant delay or casualties to a determined Japanese advance.

(5) Allied strategy? The only action I've done differently on a large scale is drawing all available supply from bases in the direct path of a Japanese advance into a central location where an Allied defense is being concentrated. I've been able to effectively employ this tactic so far in Malaya, both Java and Sumatra in the DEI, and most recently in the Philippines (Luzon). The most noticeable effect of this tactic is it acts as a "scorched earth" action to remove all available supply points from bases prior to their capture by the Japanese - nearly all bases Pillager captured are left with zero supply points on hand at the time he reaches them. Where I could be holding up Pillager here is that Japanese forces he sends into an area cannot "live off the land" - requiring Pillager to bring in most if not all the supply points needed to feed Japanese forces participating in an offensive action. The "scorched earth" strategy in combination with #3 above could be creating some problems for the Japanese.

On the other hand, the present slow time could be the calm before the storm.

Enough wild theories... moving on to today's events.

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-8 (12 ships) departing this game turn for Australia. Cargo loaded aboard ships in Convoy EX-8 includes two LCU (7 Marine Rgt, 102 Combat Engineer Bn) plus 36500 supply.

South Pacific: Coastwatcher reports for 3/22 indicate as many as 39 Japanese ships now in port at Rabaul.

DEI: Sigint entry for 3/22 indicates heavy volume of intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Tarakan. No detected Jap activity or forces shown on-map, though an undetermined number of Japanese ships are in port at Tarakan along with aircraft.

Light Japanese air activity continues over Palembang – ground attack strikes.

Singapore: Elements of Baby KB detected in Singapore – a Jap task force (9 ships) including two CVE. 68 Japanese ships (mostly transports) detected at anchor in Singapore port. Japanese air strength detected in Singapore include 238 aircraft (47 fighters, 73 bombers).

Philippines: Japanese capture Atimonan (southern Luzon). AAR follows. Pillager has apparently dispatched Jap 12 Division to secure Legaspi and bases in south Luzon.

Five US submarines (all S-class) are operating in the sea area near Suva & Pago Pago – three NE of Suva (two now heading for Wallis Is), two other subs at the KB’s current location. All available operational US S-class subs have been deployed in the South Pacific theatre at this time. Base facilities at Auckland and Sydney are capable of full replenishment of subs to support sub patrol operations. Other nearby bases including Suva and Tahiti are also available for sub refuelling. Plans are to add several long-range Dutch submarines that are now in Australia to this force.

With adequate facilities to support their operation, S-class subs with their relatively short operating range and “good” torpedoes are well placed to perform short-range patrol operations in many sea areas within the South Pacific theatre. Sea areas near Suva, Pago Pago, Noumea, the Solomons and Rabaul offer a good opportunity of getting the S-Class subs into patrol areas where they can effectively employ their torpedo armament against Japanese naval and transport targets.

Australia: Supply airlift flights are now underway from Cairns to Horn Is.

Convoy MX-5A arrived at Perth this game turn carrying Australian 18 Brigade (sub-unit of 7 Division). Two other convoys are now enroute to Australia with the remainder of Australian 7 Division.

DEI: One or more unidentified Jap TF(s) detected off eastern Java, believed to be departing Soerabaja. A Sigint report entry for 3/24 also indicated intercepted Jap radio transmissions from the detected location of the Jap TF(s).

Philippines, India, Burma, China: All quiet this game turn.

Summary of Operations 3/28/42

South Pacific: Construction activity to expand base facilities at Tahiti is now underway. A small US garrison including 2 & 3/102 Infantry Bn, 2/198 Coast AA Bn and engineers (804 EAB) is now stationed on Tahiti. Supply and fuel point stocks at Tahiti will shortly be near the base’s full storage capacity.

Short term plans in this area also include establishment of facilities for an air base at Rarotonga or Aitutaki to support naval search air patrol operations.

Japanese mine sweeping and amphibious landing operations reported underway at Tulagi. AAR follows. Seven US and Dutch submarines operating from Australia have been moving northwards through the Coral Sea enroute to patrol zones. These subs were dispatched to patrol zones near Tulagi as well as covering approaches leading south from Rabaul and the gap between Ndeni and the Solomons.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 327 encounters mine field at Tulagi (114,137)

Japanese Ships
DMS W-20
DMS W-8
DMS W-7

12 mines cleared

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Australia: Port and airfield facilities in Sydney are now expanded to maximum capacity (9 airfield, 9 port). With US engineer and base force LCU’s now arriving in Australia, a long-range plan to gradually expand port and/or airfield capacities at other major Australian bases to their maximum values will be started.

One bottleneck to the expansion of Allied forces and base facilities in Australia is appearing to be fuel point stocks. While stockpiles of fuel now in Australia are currently adequate, transporting large quantities of fuel into Australia from elsewhere (Aden, Capetown, the mainland US) presents a minor problem largely due to a shortage of available long-range, large-capacity TK ships available for movement of fuel to Australia.

Fuel stocks in Australia are required mainly to support three functions (1) domestic industrial production in Australia, (2) refueling transport convoys arriving in Australia from Capetown, Aden and the Eastern US, (3) replenishment for Allied naval operations being carried out from bases in Australia plus “in-theatre” Allied transport shipping moving to and from Australia.

The short-term solution to the problem may be the employment of some AK transport ships for transport of fuel points along with tankers in convoys going to Australia. While transporting fuel aboard AK’s is not the most efficient use of these ships as they carry only half the amount of fuel points for their rated cargo capacity, while at the same time requiring (about) the same amount of fuel as a TK to move (about) half the quantity of said fuel cargo. Not my preference but it’s a necessary evil and I do have the available AK’s. Larger, long-range AO's could be used as well, but only to the extent where this does not interfere with naval at-sea replenishment operations.

Hi, have been reading your AAR since the beginning, even have the big picture summaries printed and in a notebook, with the newbie tutorial. Great AAR and great advice given to johnjohn, and his insights are great too, have start the dec 8 scenario against ai and am in Feb 42. I do have a question though, u say to send ur engineers to demolish or destroy the oil wells, refiniries, and production facilities, not sure how to do this or how do the engineers do it, is their a "blow them up" or do they do this automatically when the japenese arrive. or does turning off the repair function in resources/industry do this. Have not heard of doing this in any other AAR, sounds like a good thing to do though.

There is a die roll. The more Allied engineers present at the point of capture, the greater the chances that some level of demolition of "industrial" facilities will occur.

The current beta patch allows for Allied Heavy Industry to be turned off, thereby conserving fuel.

It is Aug 4, hot and humid in the South Pacific. Just a quick update. Base Building has gone well. Luganville, Efate, Noumea, Koumac, Brisbane, Townsville, Cairns, Coen, Conclurry, Sydney, Suva, and Pago Pago are well developed. A sizeable number of fighters and dive bombers are stationed on the front lines. P40s and P-39s are in abundance in Aussie and rear areas. P40s are established at Darwin, Katherine (a 7 base now), Broome, and doing a credible job against the Bettys. Air Transport has kept the displaced Morseby force supplied and at full strength. Horn island remains in Aussie hands. Marines are cleaning up the garrisons around Luganville. Wasp, Sara, and Enterprise are patrolling off Ndeni. Yorktown and the biplane equipped Hornet are returning to Pearl for a long needed rest and upgrades.

Essentially I am building up forces for the eventual retaking of the canal and the Marshalls and Gilberts. 13,000 troops were killed in an enemy attempt to invade Efate. They never made it there. Presently repairing numerous ships and moving supplies. Also bringing the SOPAC and CENPAC air HQ to SOPAC to increase the number of operational a/c. Invasion of Dutch Harbor repulsed, Long Island doing considerable damage sinking the transports and pounding the invaders (along with B-17s from Anchorage). Took one torpedo and is underway to Seattle for repairs. The 152nd Regiment was lifted to DH. Once in place it quickly dispatched the remnant of the enemy on the Island. Still not planning any offensive actions in Alaska.

Got the invaders stopped, am wacking the Bettys badly, and am sinking everything that travels beyond enemy air cover. Life is good. The coconut supply is plentiful. Johnjohn.

PS--mopping up the DEI is nearly complete. Burma/India is unchanged but for additional reinforcements and supplies being brought in. The enemy keeps trying to probe the coast and keeps getting all her ships sunk by the UK fleet. I don't know when they will run out of men, but they are incurring 25,000 in losses each month. That has got to hurt.

xnavytc,

I appreciate your interest and happy that you've found my AAR forum informational in your own AE gaming.

Alfred was spot-on in what he stated in his response, moving engineer units (specifically LCU's that contain engineer elements - i.e. squads) into a location can be effective and is often the only available method of depriving your Japanese opponent (temporarily, at least) of oil, refinery, resource and industrial facilities important to his efforts. It should be noted that the key thing is moving the engineer elements or squads from an LCU into the location where you want to perform demolitions - moving in the complete LCU is not required.

Alfred was also correct in stating the demolition of production facilities is not a sure thing, there's a die roll involved. It's also true the presence of engineer elements in a location where you want to demolish production facilities increases the possibility that production facilities are actually damaged or destroyed when the base they're located in is captured by your Japanese opponent. AE does perform some automatic reduction of heavy industry and manpower production facilities located in a base each time it is captured by either side - it occurs when the Japanese capture the base from you and again when you come back to liberate it later.

In my current match vs Pillager, I've used engineers for demolition mainly in the DEI, particularly at Batavia, Soerabaja and (soon) Palembang where I've had sufficient time to prepare this. Part of my opening strategy in the DEI was collecting most of the available Dutch LCU's with engineering elements and concentrate them in central locations (Batavia, Soerabaja, Palembang). This move maximized the two attributes of Dutch engineers most useful in defending the DEI in 1941 and early 42 - (1) constructing fortifications at locations that I actually intend to defend, and (2) maximizing the probability that oil, resource and other production facilities in these locations are heavily damaged or destroyed following the inevitable Japanese capture.

As it turned out, a very effective (and sure) means of transporting (transfer) engineering units around the DEI in the teeth of a Japanese invasion in 1941-42 is by air. Load them on a ship, and your opponent can sink the ship (and you lose the engineers along with the ship). While Dutch Do-24 and PBY patrol seaplanes don't exactly have the greatest air transport capacity, they're quite capable of transporting troops and you have them in sufficient numbers. And you can send these planes out to pick up troops (engineers) from any coastal base location, regardless of its airfield size or damage to said airfield at that location. Not only did I have time to bring in Dutch engineer units from outlying locations on other islands to Java and Palembang (often after the Japanese capture of bases these units initially occupied), I was also able to transport Dutch combat ground units into Batavia, Soerabaja and Palembang to reinforce the Allied ground defence of these bases. Not that I'm going to stop Pillager from capturing anything in the DEI by reinforcing its defense, my rationale is more to prolong the agony and maybe "blow up" an extra oil well or two.

While at first glance the most valuable use of Dutch Do-24's and PBY's is naval search to spot incoming Japanese ships, I saw little purpose in using these planes to spot Japanese ships that I had little or no possibility of stopping. A second point behind using these planes for transport purposes is that the Dutch Do-24's and PBY's likely rank very low (if they rank at all) on your Japanese opponent's target list - often performing tranport missions with relative impunity if their mission is even noticed at all.

Turning off repair of industry, oil and resource production, manpower and other facilities at base locations directly in the path of the Japanese advance (especially Malaya, Singapore, Philippines, Burma and the DEI) should be done. If any of these facilities are damaged in a Japanese attack, you don't want to repair them anyway. Especially if they are earmarked for capture by your Japanese opponent.

And even once the Japanese capture a base with oil or resource production facilities, you can still inflict damage - bomb them as much and for as long as you can. Many Allied early-war bombers won't hit a Japanese ship if was standing still, but they will hit an oil well. This proved effective in carrying out "demolitions" at Tarakan as I couldn't get engineers in there.

Summary of Operations 3/30/42

Central Pacific: Sigint entries for 3/29 report intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Wotje, Tabitueua and Saipan. Detected status of Saipan indicates undetermined Japanese aircraft based on Saipan plus ship(s) at anchor, otherwise no other detected Japanese activity at any of the three bases.

South Pacific: KB again in the cross-hairs off Suva… AAR and current situation map follow.

If one of these S-class sub torpedoes score a hit, good chance it won’t be a dud. It would be a nice way to bag one of Pillager’s carriers.

Coastwatcher report for 3/29 indicates 13 Japanese ships still in Rabaul.

Sigint report entry for 3/29 indicating elements of Japanese 10 Infantry Division are loaded aboard an AK and bound for Truk. From this report it can be concluded that Pillager has transferred 10 Division out of the Kwantung Army and now in the process of re-deploying it from Manchuria for use somewhere in the Pacific theatres.

Summary of Operations 3/31/42

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 3/30 reports Japanese 6th Fleet HQ is now located on Tabitueua. Detected status of Tabiteuea shows one Jap LCU, port size 2(1), airfield size 4(3). No other detected Jap forces or activity was shown.

South Pacific: No reported contact with the KB this game turn. Naval air search flights continue to the N of Suva, also a number of US S-Class subs roaming the area.

New Guinea: Japanese capture Madang (northern coast). AAR follows.

C Coy/NG Rifles still holding Terapo on the southern coast near Port Moresby has been under Japanese air attack for several days. Plans are to eventually evacuate this LCU by air from Terapo.

Philippines: Japanese transport or amphibious TF encountered shore batteries on Bataan. It’s hard to say exactly what Pillager was doing – I don’t believe he was attempting an amphibious landing on Bataan, more likely these transports were caught passing through Bataan base hex while carrying LCU reinforcements enroute to Manila. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Naval Gun Fire at Bataan - Coastal Guns Fire Back!

30 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.

Japanese Ships (these xAP are medium-size transports)
xAP Atsuta Maru, Shell hits 3, Mine hits 1, on fire
xAP Mizuho Maru, Shell hits 5, Mine hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Japanese ground losses: 43 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 5 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

(Given the reported ship hits & damage and also the size of the two xAP’s, the LCU casualty figures in this AAR may be understated. The troop capacity of the two Jap ships also raise the possibility this action could have resulted in serious damage to either one large Jap LCU or two medium to smaller LCU’s.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary of Operations 4/01/42

Japanese Home Islands: Japanese transport TF moving on SE heading intercepted by US fleet sub near Aogashima. AAR follows.

SS Plunger launches 2 torpedoes at xAKL Hokuan Maru

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most US fleet subs operating near the Japanese home islands and various locations in the Central Pacific are being kept in Pearl Harbor as they return for replenishment. Subs are being retained to undergo 4/42 ship upgrades that are now occurring for most US fleet subs. 4/42 upgrades for these subs will equip them with radar giving them improved spotting capability at sea. Some fleet subs are being upgraded at Pearl, others have been dispatched to bases on the US West Coast.

Central Pacific: Sigint entries for 3/31 report heavy volume of intercepted radio signals from Kwajalein and Maleolap. One or more Jap submarine(s) are detected in Kwajalein base – either docked or underway. Detected base statuses show an undetermined number of ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein, Jap aircraft based at both Kwajalein and Maleolap. Maleolap airfield appears to be built up to its maximum size of 4(1). No other detected Jap forces or activity in the Marshall Is area.

Several US subs are operating in patrol areas near Kwajalein – the subs have not intercepted or detected any Japanese ship movements.

South Pacific: No reported contact with the KB this game turn. Naval air search flights continue to the N of Suva, also a number of US S-Class subs roaming the area.

At this time, all US S-class subs are now operating in the South Pacific theatre, either from Australia or New Zealand. Like the fleet subs, the S-class subs also receive radar equipment in a 4/42 ship upgrade. Plans are to give priority 4/42 upgrades to S-class subs as they return to either Auckland or Sydney for replenishment - both Auckland and Sydney have complete facilities for support of submarine operations.

New Guinea: AAR entry for 3/31 reports a Japanese amphibious landing is underway at Milne Bay. No information available on Japanese ship(s) or LCU(s) involved in landing ops at Milne Bay. One US S-class sub is operating on patrol nearby, this sub has been dispatched to Milne Bay.

Summary of Operations 4/03/42

The Sigint report for 4/02 included a larger than usual number of entries for intercepted Jap radio transmission activity – almost entirely from bases scattered across the Japanese home islands and the Southeast Asia area. A glance across the game map shows no Japanese activity beyond normally expected levels. This could indicate nothing more than Pillager issuing a higher than usual number of orders during the Japanese orders phase and that a larger number of these orders found their way into the Sigint report. Not really any conclusions to be made on my part given what I can observe, I have no hard evidence of anything going on let alone what it is (if there really is anything).

4/42 Ship Upgrades: Nine US cruisers (6CA, 3 CL) plus several DD’s entered upgrade mode this game turn. Additional ships are currently being distributed among various shipyards and will shortly enter upgrading. The 4/42 upgrade affects a large number of ships (mainly US warships) – upgrades in 4/42 for many of these classes include enhanced flak and radar capability, many ships previously not having radar. While these upgrades will not immediately turn the tide (and are not meant to), the across-the-board improvements in flak and detection capability for US ships is quite useful in many respects (on a large scale) and should not be disregarded.

Central Pacific: Sigint report entry for 4/02 indicates Japanese radio transmissions intercepted from Baker Is. Detected status of the base shows undetermined Japanese aircraft operating from Baker, no evidence of airfield or port facilities expanded, no other Jap forces or activity detected.

Australia: Japanese bombers repeat their attack on Darwin airfield, again no damage reported.

Multiple Jap air attacks on Horn Island in the Torres Strait. The 4/02 combat phase replay appears to indicate the Japanese bombers participating in these raids are operating from both Rabaul and Port Moresby. AAR’s follow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Afternoon Air attack on Horn Island , at 91,128

19 troops of a IJA Infantry Squad accidentally lost during unload of 33rd Infantry Rgt /3
75mm T94 Mtn Gun damaged beyond repair during unload of 33rd Infantry Rgt /3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many locations in the DEI remain owned (as opposed to effectively controlled) by the Dutch – including Palembang, parts of the southern coast of Borneo, central and northern areas of Celebes (except Manado), western New Guinea, plus most of the smaller island bases in the eastern DEI.

Japanese control in the DEI at this time is centered around Java (now completely occupied), most of Borneo (except parts of the southern coast), most of Sumatra (except Palembang), southern Celebes (Makassar & Kendari) plus Manado, Koepang (on Timor), and a small number of island bases in the eastern DEI.

Virtually no effective Allied forces remain in the DEI theatre, therefore, what remains in Dutch hands is awaiting Pillager’s mop-up operations which are likely to occur following the Japanese capture of Palembang.

Philippines: Japanese launch their initial ground attack on Bataan. 19K supply remains on-hand in Bataan, not expecting supply there to last for very long. AAR follows.

India/Burma: Japanese launch air attacks in this theatre against Akyab and Ledo. These actions represent the first appearance of Japanese air forces anywhere in the Burma theatre. AAR’s follow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Afternoon Air attack on Akyab , at 54,45

Weather in hex: Light rain

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-Ic Sally x 16

No Japanese losses

Airbase supply hits 5
Runway hits 23
(Airfield service damage 13, runway damage 23)

Aircraft Attacking:
16 x Ki-21-Ic Sally bombing from 1000 feet
Airfield Attack: 2 x 250 kg GP Bomb

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No Allied air forces are currently based at Akyab – I have no immediate plans for developing and using Akyab as an airbase at least until such time where it’s certain Akyab can remain in Allied control for the long term. Akyab is being occupied as a forward position by a small British garrison (two Bn’s). Pillager did not move on Akyab in our previous CHS match, this base remained in Allied control last time although the area around Akyab and Cox’s Bazar was a “no man’s land” between the Japanese and Allied front lines until late 1943.

China: Japanese ground attack at Nanning continues. Latest AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese continue assault on Sian. AAR and current situation map follow. It appears Pillager could be making a move with two Japanese LCU to outflank Sian from the NW. Given the relatively favorable terrain for defense of this hex (hex 84,39), I issued orders for several Chinese infantry corps from the adjacent hex to enter hex 84,39 in order to obstruct (if not effectively counter) Pillager’s possible move. Japanese LCU strength to the NW of Sian is relatively weak (3 LCU in two hexes) giving a decent possibility of stopping or seriously delaying Pillager’s outflanking move.

Summary of Operations 4/04/42

4/42 Ship Upgrades: Additional US ships (CV Enterprise plus DD’s and fleet subs) entered upgrade mode this game turn.
