Yeah, have you ever played a 4x with that feature? It's pretty convenient, (I think Galactic Civilizations 2 had map-drag options). It beats the heck out of using the arrow button or clicking on the minimap when you have very large scale maps and want to look at nearby objects. I think the term is "click and drag". Google Maps uses it:

at least it is what i am talking about, yes - this is generally called "panning" in other RTS titles.

I think scrolling via mouse border position works well enough.  I m not that big a fan of dragging, because there is always the possibility of clicking somewhere interactive and causing an action that I didn't want.  Consider dragging along the screen in multiple successions and then accidentally hitting one of your planets and then selecting a build order for something unwanted.

I know, that's why a correct implementation of dragging is usually mapped to the middle mouse-button, as it often has no other function..that way you won't accidentally select stuff or create orders...

So, umm, what happened to 1.05?

I get the impression that this game has really slipped to the backburner.

The last estimate I posted was 1.0.5 public beta by mid-June and I think we are still on track for that (so far).
Yep. I'd give a few more days before panicking.

Just yesterday Erik posted that it was finished, they were making tweaks, and it will be out soon. RELAX

For three weeks now, I've been saying mid-June for the 1.0.5 public beta. I've posted information in the interim to let people know what we are working on. We're still on target for a mid-June public beta. This qualifies as "slipped to the backburner"?

Regards,

- Erik

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is a public Beta?  Will the Beta be available for anyone who wants to download it?  Or do you have to sign up for Public Beta's somewhere?

Alpha: Most features incomplete or unimplemented.
Beta: Complete game, needs to be tested for bugs (there are always bugs!) so they can be found an squashed.
Private Beta: Early beta stage where only a select group gets access to the file.
Public Beta: Beta is available for everyone and anyone. There might be bugs, but if you can live with them you can get the software earlier by downloading the public beta version.

True... there were constant updates about the progress... a simply humongous list of improvements and changes, and near daily reports of progress (along with a "it will go beta mid june" with each one of those)

I hope, whether it's in this update or another one soon that ship sets may actually be assigned to certain races and other modding capabilities be opened up. Being able to add more planets etc.
Only, if this doesn't happen soon I fear interest may start to wane abit?

One heads up on 1.0.5 - unlike previous updates it does not work with older saved games. So please do not update if you have games you want to finish up first.

Wow already tomorrow, I´m losing track of time, perhaps it is due to the world cup soccer. I really need to play this game again, otherwise I won´t be able to recognise it anymore with so many changes.

hey,
the point is not that i can't use edge scrolling efficiently - i wouldn't use it if keyboard scrolling would be fixed ;)
however, a map-drag option would work as well and actually be pretty great.

+1 for map drag on the main screen and the mini map, or at least fix the cursor key scrolling :)

Heh, I don't care what you call it, or which version of it is, I still call it 'not worth watching'.

With me, that goes for all sports. Fun to play, can't stand to sit and watch. About the only sport I will watch on TV is Ice Hockey...the rest, nah, I'll pass.

Hi guys,

We believe 1.0.5 is ready to go to public beta, but because of the Storm over the Pacific release we ran out of time to do the public beta release. I will post it up for everyone first thing tomorrow morning, sorry for the extra delay!

Regards,

- Erik
