I have been thinking about the conversion of CL Tenryu and Tatsuta to CLAA but I have not reached a definite answer. On one side it would be really nice to have them with KB to add air protection but the 180 day repair time is a very long one. What is the opinion of the more experienced JFB? Do they really make a difference as CLAA?

I'm not experienced player, but I'd say convert them. Japan need all AA boost they can get. Also I think japanese CLs are not good surface ships anyway.

180 days is not that bad, you get them back in second part of 1942. That's not too late.

It's a no-brainer. You don't really need 2 old crappy CLs from 2/42 to 8/42....but you definitely need AA capability. They have about the same AA capability as a CA, freeing up those valuable ships for something else.

Absolutely do it.

They aren't very good surface combattants

Yup, definitely do it as the IJN AA is fairly cr@p when compared to the US.
ON the other hand, you do loose the Tenyru's torpedo capability which, if my memory is correct, was about the only thing in its favour as a genuine (night) surface fighter! Other than that it's fine for leading round DD flotillas at reviews but not much else...

Go ahead and knock yourself out. We AFBs will just hunt it down and use it for scrap anyways. Six months in the yard for a refit is six months longer you will get to keep your ship....
