AV Float planes not flying missions? - 7/28/2002 8:41:17 PM

I have a question about AV float planes. I am in a pbem as the Japs and have about 3 or 4 AVs with full complements of float planes. They don't seem to be flying any missions however, as all the pilot's fatigue always stays at 0. They have flown missions in the past according to the pilot histories, however. I am not sure if this is new behavior due to the 1.20 patch, or whether I just had not noticed since I only recently the AVs as reinforcements. I have tried both docking and putting the AVs to sea. This has gone on for several turns now, in different hexes, so if it is due to weather it is quite a coincidence. I have float planes set to both naval search and ASW patrol, and all at 100% search level, but none are flying.

Anyone seen anything similar with 1.20 or earllier? Any ideas?

thanks.

hmmm... are there supplies in the locations to which you have sent the AVs? I haven't closely watched my PBYs since v1.20 came out, but I believe that they are still performing their tasks as ordered. I have, however, been very sure to keep their outpost locations supplied (there is just an AV and PBY squadron at each).

Yeah, they have supplies. One AV is even at a base with a squadron of Rufes, and they flew last turn, so I guess it is not the weather.

its not due to the latest patch. This phenomenon has been going on since at least 1.10.

From my own AAR it seems that only surface combat and air combat TF's are running floatplane missions, but no Transport or fast transport missions, whether naval search or ASW.

Quite frustrating as I too, have some pilots who have mission "histories" for a couple of the AV's so they 'were' flying at the beginning of the campaign (1.0 perhaps?) but do not any longer. (zero fatique among all pilots....and on ASW, not a single reporting or attack, even when sailing into a known sub fested area)

Have you tried transferring the planes from the AVs to the base that you are docked at? (AVs need to be docked at a friendly beach/port or anchored in port to be effective) I know that the CSs could operate the planes directly, but I don't know whether the AVs could.

Just a thought...

I think Rwlf poster is right about this issue

I have my float planes based on a beach with no runway aviable there but I thave a transport TF in the same hex located - this will bring the so much needed AC-support to the Aircraft-Squad.

It will take one or two days to get them at operational level, but it works. :)

AV give support for sea-plane, but aren't a base for them....
Only CS can launch sea-plane at sea

Not so sure of that. Some AV's had catapults and were capable of launching them while in motion. A CS to me was just a dedicated vessel built from the keel up to be seaplane tender/carrier whilst an AV was usually a merchant conversion. I do specifically recall seeing a couple pictures of Japanese AV's that had catapults

Besides, even in a port, the AV's are not launching missions, docked or undocked. They should not have to transfer their planes to a ground facility to operate them.

And what of the previous flown missions? I do not recall this being a patch issue where it was stated that AV's would no longer operate their aircraft unless sitting in a port with planes transfrered to the beach/facility

I guess that's why I never noticed the problem. I always attached the aircraft to the location (for me some are not even full bases, just beach hexes with supplies) and docked the AV in the location. I never tried transferring the squadrons to the AV. I'll probably run into this when I finally play as the Japanese...

What I have observed is that seaplane on AVs which are IN port fly missions. At least I know they fly recon missions.

However, AVs that are docked AT a port do not fly missions.

odd....mine arn't. Tried it every which way but loose. undocked...new destination (a handy trick to get MSW's to do their jobs i found out the hard way!), as well as sending them out to sea in several diff TF types, all in a vain effort to get the pilots back to go back out and fly. no go.

Maybe Matrix can clarify as i know for a fact at the start of my AAR the AV's conducted missions during their escort of the PM invasion TF. Otherwise they wouldn't show acumilated missions for the surviving pilots

Well what is really strange is that only one of the 2 AVs in port (Gili) is flying missions. I have one AV so that Jakes are flying Recon over PM and Pete are doing ASW. I know the recon flights are working since I see them twice a day and the Pete pilots have some small fatigue.

The 2nd AV set to search and ASW is not fly mission so I transfered them to the base.
