I'm guessing that the answer to this will be a resounding "No!", as it seems to be GG/Matrix's policy to avoid this like the plague, for reasons I've never understood.

But since you're designing this from the bottom up and we're only in alpha - could you include an save-game editor please? I mean one that would allow me to play against the ai, save a position and explore what-if's from there?

There is no save game editor for WitE nor there will be one (I am 99.9999%sure of it)...

But you can play against AI and switch sides whenever you want (or even watch AI vs AI and then take one side)!

Thanks Leo. Not the answer I was hoping for, but the one I was expecting, darn it.

Playing against the AI and switching, as you suggest, isn't what I was looking for. I guess I'll keep replaying the first weeks of the war, like I do in WitP...

Steve.

You can save the game at any point and go on from there and save again at any point.

Still missing the point. But this dead horse should now be allowed to rest in peace.

You can take a save game, change the extension to .scn, move it over to the /scen folder and then open it up in the editor. You can then make your edits and save it as its own scenario. I just tried it.

You can? Exactly what I was after!

Now, what's the betting this gets nerfed by the time it gets to release?

Good news indeed. Then I am sure some modders will come up with nice little external programs that can be run on the saves between the turns to modify production, R&D and withdrawals. That will add some dynamics and a huge "what-if" potential to the game. I am sure lots of people will be looking for that.

Could you guys add the save game extension to the editor so you can open saves in one step? Probably trivial.

Trey, are you sure that this functionality would remain after our ALPHA / BETA (I seriously doubt because it opens "a can of worms" )?

Well, it's not so nice and shiny as Trey described. Scenario data handling is very much different from the save files data. So in fact there is no clean way to export save data to scenario - it is probably caused more troubles than help in troubleshooting. There could be various way to provide such functionality in final product, but it's a priority question. Don't think it's going to happen on first release.
