I have a question. In the manual (19.5) we´re told that there
is a pilot replacement pool (seems to be pilots not attached
to a particular squadron and with fixed experience) that are
used to reinforce squadrons with less pilots than planes.
Are those pilots randomly created in the computer or I have
to create them in the editor? How does it work???

afenelon,

:) For what its worth (I'm sure simeone from Matrix or 2by3 will correct me if my WAG is wrong) my observations seem to show that UV uses the available unasigned pilots then creates them as needed. I say this because most squadrons have few if any pilots assigned from the editors pilot list. It appears that there is some kind of pilot generator that uses the nationality/service of the squadron (that needs pilots) to determine the name and rank used. I'm very glad of this since there are 19,999 slots for pilots and only 1,572 sloats are used. I would hate to have to try and fill the remaing slots. Besides I don't think there would be enough pilots to last through a long campaign if it only used those that already exist.

Related to the random pilot generator...

There are no Japanese names that begin with "L". I've seen some of my pilots with first initials of "L" and that is wrong. Since I've never seen any of the other letters that the Japanese don't use in their language, such as "V", I assume the "L" thing is just an oversite. I know it's minor, but maybe it could be fixed in a future patch. It shouldn't be too hard.

Unless the rules of transliteration have been changed over the last few years, that is not entirely true. The actual Japanese consonant sound involved is actually between an "L" and and "R" -- which is why Japanese speakers have trouble distinguishing the two. Generally, it is (was) acceptable to use either an "L" or an "R" when converting a word to romanized spellings. In cases involving names, it is usually polite to ask the person if they have a preference.

Then again, its been 10 years since I took Japanese, and I could be wrong.
