Seriously, I have not had this much fun with a pacific war game since the old PTO on SNES! I still have a full war going on (the one in my AAR) as the US and Japan is putting up a fight! I realized I am not able to walk all over them and take over what I want when I want as in other games, in SotP I really have to fight for a change. Then the Japs actually went out and took over several islands. So the challenge and fun is here, no doubt.

For me, it's 'I haven't had this much fun (with a Pacific War game) since the old SPI boardgame giant War in the Pacific.'

Good to hear you think the game's a blast too.

Yup, have a copy of the SPI game. It befell the cat attack (the only game to do so) years ago after starting the campaign - 2 days in and the war abruptly ended with both sides losing to a feline. Matrix WitP is that board game, realized - IMO.

I'm getting used to the sea zones in SotP (HoI2 vet). Since watching the naval battle tutorial, that has helped my enjoyment 100%. And I do really like this game.

Actually SOP naval warfare mechanics doesn't give enough immersion as I would expect to have in a PTO game.  In my opinion, it does not have the feel of WitP where you develop a personal attachment to your ships and task forces.  Which is an important feature in the PTO.  SOP still feels like a land-based wargame with naval and air added in as an afterthought.  To me the naval aspect of the game is too abstracted and more "boardgame-like".  The ground units have supply... why not the navies? But I guess this is a design decision we all have to accept.

Desptie the criticism, I like the game in general.  The design actually works and I still feel that I'm playing the Pacific War.  Only the focus is more about taking ground objectives than sinking ships (the navy is just there to support the advance in the ground).  Realism aside, the game is definitely fun to play.

What would happen if the game awarded points for the ships sunk instead of just the objective hexes?

Sounds a LOT like my copy of SPI's "War in Europe". I no longer live in the house where I actually had room to lay out all the maps simultaneously. The feline destruction squadron was enough of a problem with a game of Decline of the Third Reich and that fitted all on a single table!

I am amazed at all you guys with CATS!!! Real men have DOGS you know! I had 7 dogs myself, but, unfortunately we had 3 house dogs (poodles arghhhh my moms). Trudy the little teacup one would run across my maps when I was ignoring her. She was sooooo funny too. I could pick her up and start to shake her and she'd start growling and when I put her down she would run and bite the nearest other dog (poodle) lol it was almost like a windup toy as she did it every time.

AHAHAHAHAA. MajFrankBurns, I have spent my 10 years as a member of this forum having little to say. And even when I do it's of no importance. You just posted what I consider to be the funniest post ever on Matrix. I am still laughing at the image.

You think that image is funny you should have seen her when the floor was slick trying to get traction to go bite that other dog.

Not my cat (assumption it was my cat -20VP).

I still have the 3rd edition of Rise and Decline of the Third Reich on second shelf of my living room coffee table (along with the kids Balderdash, etc - ha!). I never tried war in Europe as my brother and I had too much fun with TR. We could play that quickly (as in 2 sittings), followed by Squad Leader (not ASL) for a break then back to strategy, etc.

The game that started us down the path of wargaming: 1776.

Well you forced me to break a record-I made two posts in one day-my average is no where near that. I love the image. In the late nineties when my sons were 12 and 13 they were really getting into board gaming with me. My wife bought a pomeranian and that bratty little dog(God rest her soul) loved to chase my daughters cat-ALWAYS into our game room. The cat and dog knew what they were doing, I just know it. Just like your evil little pet

Real men (with dogs) also tend to have hydatid cysts and/or trichinosis from allowing the excrement-eaters to lick them in the mouth afterwards.
There IS a place for dogs in the real world. They're good at working sheep or cattle and they're fine if treated like any other farm equipment and kept in sheds. For myself, I've never liked that slavish devotion that dogs demonstrate. I'm not part of ANYBODY'S pack, let alone the leader of some sad little group.

There is another place for dog. The Koreans have excellent recipes for them and the meat is said to be "warming". I can take that claim with a grain of salt, but Korean dog stew is very tasty.

Thats hilarious! Although I agree with you about the mouth licking thing I feel just the opposite about dogs. I am very pro-dog. Hell, I am a dog. Some women say men are pigs. But some of us are dogs....and we're proud of it! woof woof

BITE ME. Although after our pom died I did look up those recipes, but my wife caught me. I don't need to go into that discussion.

OH YEAH. LOVE THE GAME>

I`m a tiger and a scorpio depending on a zodiac one prefers ;) Chinese culture is a bit less familiar to me, so as a scorpio I’m not sure whether cats or dogs appeal to me more, especially because unlike to arachnids both have furs.

Cats are Cool - Dogs Drool

Fish in aquariums are not pets, they are just something for cats to stare at when they can find the time.

Ok, when I was a kid I had SPI's The Campaign for North Africa. The map filled the floor of my bed room. I would spend hours playing and keeping written notes. I had not been paying enough attention to my weiner dog. I came home one day and he had made entry into my "Command Center" (bed room) and left a good healthy one in the middle of my notes, well placed I might add. No dogs now but I have two cats. I have often wanted to get one of my many board games out and play I know the cats would find great interest and want to help...
