No. England was last successfully invaded in 1066 and there was no subsequent "overthrow" of our Norman conquerors (we sort of went with the flow) and so no requirement for an independence day.

As outlined in the "Question About Britain" thread, the Scots and Irish signed up to the Union and the Welsh were "annexed" in the 13th century and this situation remains to this day. There are moves afoot by some to break free from the Union. No doubt if formal separation from the United Kingdom ever happens, Plaid Cymru, the Scottish Nationalists and whoever in Northern Ireland will no doubt have their "independence" day to celebrate the event.

Having said that, I must confess I do not know if the people of the Republic of Ireland have such a day to celebrate their split from the UK.

Happy 4th July by the way.

yea I was watching Rebels and Redcoats on the Tube Saturday..and thought it was strange to keep hearing the Brit Narrator regard the early Americans as "Rebels" over and over again...but then from their(British) POV It's understandable.

It is accepted.... I am afraid it is my warped sense of humour. The USA has every right to self determination, and is a light for freedom throughout the world..... but never make the mistake of believing your own country's propaganda or forgetting your own country's history. The democracies of the world are certainly not perfect in their foreign policies but they are still the good guys.

Reminds me of the old Star Trek episode where they land on a planet where Asian people called "Comms" rule over primitive people called "Yangs".At the end the "Yangs" prevail and reveal their flag to be a USA flag."Comms" meaning Communists and "Yangs" meaning Yanks.

We always refered to that episode as the "E Plaug Neesta" episode. How Kirk figured out that "E Plaug Neesta" meant "E Pluibus Unum" is amazing. (Yeah, I'm a recovering Star Trek geek.)

Anyway, Happy 4th of July! And a special tip of the hat to you Brits for being so understanding about it. Its kind of worked out to your advantage in the long run.

Not sure why anyone would want to celebrate having their butts saved by the French, but each to his own, I suppose.....

One and a half, turning up long after the two minute warning in WW1 hardly counts.

What always strikes me is I rarely hear a Frenchman thank the Americans for WWII (even less us) but then Americans never mention the French at all in relation to 1776.

I think you're both a bit embarrassed about it....

Still, if we had to lose a war, this wasn't a bad one to lose. America would never have become what she did without the revolution, not least because things like the British class system etc (had we still been in charge) would have smothered the ideals, dreams and hard work that saw her prosper.

For myself, I've never doubted that generations of young americans sitting in barracks in Germany saved me from having to learn Russian, so you will always have my thanks, friendship, regards and respect.

IronDuke

I think the French joined us just to spite you! Just got done with a book on the French Revolution, what a sad sadistic time that was for the French. But still without them we would not have been able to throw off the yoke of the tyrant King George of course Don't forget about the Spanish either, who jumped in at the last moment to spite you as well.
