Moral of this story is not to send a regiment to do a division's job. Got a little overconfident after successes in the Marshal Islands, and thought with his attention diverted there and in China I could sneak in and steal Wake from him. Oops. With no reserves I had little choice but to withdraw what little of the 35th Regiment that was left before I lost it entirely.

It is now confirmed that BB Kaga was sunk from 13.5” guns over 100 miles off Camranh Bay after the 3/17/1923 Battle of the South China Sea. This is the same battle in which BB Barham was also lost. Sonar hits from passing DDs had led to speculation that a large ship had sunk in the area, but it wasn't until today that British intellegence confirmed it was the Kaga.

From the London Times:

About 300 anti-war protesters demonstrated on Trafalgar Square last night. The resulting melee between some of the more boisterous protestors and a group of soldiers and Great War veterans had to be broken up by police. 10 demonstrators were arrested. This disturbance comes two days after a Times poll showing that almost 50% of the British public is opposed to our involvement in the Pacific War. Reasons appear to include a reluctance to involve ourselves in another Great War so soon after the previous, and a general feeling that this conflict is really between the USA and China against Japan. Speaking candidly, some high-ranking military officers have expressed concern that such signficant forces are being deployed to the Far East, while we face trouble much closer to home, including Germany and Turkey, as well as what may be an emerging threat from Italy.

Violent anti-war protests have also been reported in Paris.

Meeting in the same Japanese businessman's villa outside of Geneva that Japanese and Chinese diplomats met in early December, an unlikely conversation takes place between mid-level Dutch and Japanese diplomats. After spending half the evening exchanging pleasentries and posturing, the diplomats get to the business at hand. Japan states that the Dutch East Indies' supplying the Allies with fuel and supplies is prolonging the war, to the detriment of all parties involved. Despite some notable losses, the Japanese Navy has the most powerful fleet in the Pacific right now, and intends to use it against the Dutch East Indies if Holland does not withdraw from the Alliance, and either cease trade with all warring powers in the Pacific, or trade with all warring powers in the Pacific, including Japan. A large amount of Imperial forces are still in the Phillipines, and even now they are preparing for a full scale invasion of the weakly-defended East Indies.

The meeting concludes with the Japanese stating that in his exhalted generosity, the Emperor has offered Holland has one last chance to avoid being completely expelled from its rich colonies. With England and France weak and wavering, and most of the US Pacific Fleet destroyed, what good can possibly come from Holland's participation in this war? Holland has 48 hours to decide.

At 12 noon, GMT, Holland announces has accepted a cease fire from the Japanese Empire. The Netherlands state that they do not wish to contribute to further suffering to this war-torn world. This includes a cessation of fuel and resource shipments to all warring powers. The Dutch conclude by urging all warring powers to extend the cease-fire and end this terrible war.

Riots break out in China. The USA, Australia, and New Zealand are outraged. Military leaders in London are now confronted with the logistical nightmare of how to keep Australia and New Zealand supplied while still prosecuting the war.

Hours later, Japan states that it is willing to observe "an honorable cease fire" with the USA, British Empire, and France to attempt to arrive at a diplomatic solution.

Allied leaders meet as word of the Dutch cease-fire and Japan's offer to extend it sweeps around the world. Meanwhile, police and soldiers nervously arrive in public squares across Britain and France at dawn, expecting a repeat of the violent anti-war protests of two days before. Instead, the squares are packed with the largest crowds since the end of the Great War. Instead of the expected students and anarchists demonstrating, a mixture of old, young, mothers pushing strollers with little children in tow, cleregy, even some Great War veterans from the trenches, all spontaneously come together. Many hold signs, simply stating "Enough!". The media reports that general war fatigue is what motivated most of them. Since the crowds are orderly and peaceful, there is very little for the police and soldiers to do. Smaller demonstrations break out in Canada, Austalia, and New Zealand, and none in the USA.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/23/23

For over two weeks, Allied forces have been positioning themselves to invade Ponape and Kasuie Islands. For several days US blimps have been monitoring an IJN TF 2 hexes NW of Ponape, as well as activity around Eniwetok. In the early morning hours of 5/23, the Allied TF blockading Ponape is given permission to engage the stationary IJN TF, while other ships including the UK CVs Argus and Vindictive prowl the area looking for other TFs and stragglers.

Even some police and active duty soldiers are noted among the demonstrators.

Japan states that the Allies have 48 hours to accept the ceasefire, or it will prosecute the war until it has achieved ultimate victory, promising "years of war, sacrifice, and hardship".

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/24/23

For the third day in a row, public squares across England and France are full of demonstrators. The crowds grow every day. Sensing the change in the political wind, many politicians and newspapers join the chorus calling for the war's end. The United States and China are notable for their lack of desire to end the war.

Meeting furiously throughout the day in Geneva, Allied and Japanese diplomats agree to a "temporary cease fire" for 11:59 PM, Tokyo time, on May 25. All ground forces are to remain in place. All warships are to return to port. No combat aircraft are to fly with the acception of reconnaisance and transport aircraft. The United States is very vocal in its opposition, but is eventually convinced to comply in return for certain trade concessions. The British in particular are adamant that the USA adhere to the cease fire, as Royal Navy and Commonwealth forces are operating alongside Americans in the South Pacific, and further agressive moves by the USA will likely result in a resumption of the war. Conspicously absent from the talks is China.

Combat continues until 11:59 PM. At that moment, peace suddenly descends upon the Pacific. In one dramatic instance, an Allied TF carrying the 3rd Australian Infantry Brigade to invade Kusuaie Island turns around half way to its target.

Joy and elation spread in England and France.

Cautious optimism is expressed in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

Riots break out again in China.

Japanese newspapers scream various versions of the word "Victory!" in their banner headlines.

American newspapers scream various versions of the word "Treachery" in their banner headlines. President Harding warns the USA that the cease fire may only be temporary.

Several Allied and Japanese ships and submarines sink from battle damage in the days that follow.

In the weeks which follow, Allied and Japanese diplomats meet in Geneva in an attempt to make the ceasefire a lasting, permenant peace.

Both the Japanese and Americans are obstinate. America demands that the Japanese withdraw from all conquored territories, including the Phillipines, Guam, Wake, and China. Until that happens, the USA will continue to occupy the Marshall Islands. The Japanese did not seem to think that was such a bad deal.

The death of President Warren Harding on August 2, 1923, and the Great Kanto Earthquake on September 1, 1923, only slowed down negotiations, though a deal was reached by the end of the year to exchange Allied prisoners for the relatively few Japanese captured alive. Slowly, UK and Commonwealth forces withdrew from China and the Marshall Islands. Once the withdrawl was complete, both England and France tried putting the peace talks in context with a renewal of Naval Limitation treaty negotiations. The effort only served to alienate Japan, which had no desire to surrender its supremacy in the Pacific, and the United States, which was determined to rebuild its shattered navy. The British position did put a strain upon its relations with Australia and New Zealand, both of which were more inclinded to share the American point of view regarding the situation in the Pacific.

By July 4, 1924, the USA had given up all hope of a renewed Allied effort to liberate the Phillipines and other occupied territories. Retreating into isolationism, the American President Calvin Coolidge declared every May 25 to be a "Day of Remembrance", and solemn parades and processions featuring the American flag flying upside down marked the new holiday in the decade and a half which followed.

Having fallen woefully behind the Japanese Navy's strength due to the debacle at the Battle off Midway, the USA placed greater emphasis on naval construction. While this resulted in the Colorado and South Dakota class BBs, and the Lexington class BCs completed by 1930, it also resulted in increased deficit spending. This was later identified as one of the key factors which plunged the world into a Great Depression in 1929. It should also be noted that Japan continued its BB and BC buiding program as well. Both nations also were very impressed by the performance of the British aircraft carriers, and continued perfecting the vessels, culminating in Japan's 6-ship Shokaku class and the USA's 4-ship Yorktown class in service by the end of 1941.

In 1928, with frustration mounting and a presidential election looming, shortly after announcing he would not seek reelection, President Coolidge unexpectedly threatened to renew hostilities if Japan did not withdraw from the occupied territories. Japan was able to stall for time, and help President Coolidge save enough face to get fellow Republican Herbert Hoover elected, by announcing a plebicide will be held offering the Filipinos the choice of remaining in the Empire or returning to being a US protectorate. Coolidge was able to convince Americans that the return of the Phillipines was "a done deal", and his popularity rating soared.

However, after widescale reports of fraud and intimidation, Japan announced on January 12, 1929 that 96% of Filipinos had voted to remain within the Japanese Empire. When confronted with proof that the election had been sabotaged, Japan promised a full investigation, and allowed some low-level American officials and civil servants to return to the Phillipines as part of a "reintegration", but all key posts, to say nothing of the military, remained firmly under Japanese control.

After years of battling "bandits" in occupied China, Japan launched a full scale invasion of Manchuria after the Mukden Incident in September 1931. By this point, all Allied forces had withdrawn from China. This was followed by a full scale invasion of China in 1937.

Relations between Japan and Holland continued on its odd course. While Japan didn't invade the Dutch East Indies outright, it was obvious that the Dutch remained in power there exclusively at the pleasure of Japan. Increased Japanese investment and one-sided treaties led to what was called the "economic colonization" of the Dutch East Indies by Japan, with Holland retaining control of certain areas in name only. While this reduced Japan's dependence upon foreign oil, it did not eliminate it altogether.

In July 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced an oil embargo upon Japan, due to Japanese aggression in China, as well as French Indo-China following that country's surrender to Nazi Germany, and its continued occupation of the Phillipines. Until one sunny Sunday morning in December...

On a sunny Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, aircraft from the 6 Shokaku-class fleet aircraft carriers launched a series of airstrikes on targets on Oahu.

The first wave damaged BB Pennsylvania, which was in drydock, and caused her sister BB Arizona to explode, killing many sailors. Both of these ships were veterans of the Pacific War. The BC Constellation, moored outboard of BB Maryland, capsized after receiving numerous torpedo hits, and was a total loss. BC Constitution, moored outboard of BB Colorado, was blown in half after a magazine exploded and was also a total loss. (The surviving Lexington-class BCs were used primarily as heavy carrier escorts after this date). BB West Virginia sank in shallow water, while BB Washington attempted to escape the harbor. She was beached at Hospital Point after receiving multiple hits during her escape. Numerous aircraft were destroyed on the ground.

The second wave targetted hangers and airfields.

The third wave targetted the shipyard, turning the oil storage facilities into an inferno. The CL Pheonix and 2 DDs were sunk in the channel, blocking the remaining ships in the harbor from escaping into open water.

As President Roosevelt was giving his "Day of Infamy" speech before the US Congress, the Japanese Fifth Infantry Division, so chosen because its members were from the Hiroshima area, just like many of Oahu's residents, hit the beach in northern Oahu.

The Second Pacific War had begun...

I have to say I really enjoyed both playing this game and writing this AAR. It was because of the AARs I read on this forum that I decided to get into this game. And it was because of all the time I put into the AAR that I didn't want it to just abruptly stop in the middle of the war.

My postings were on a 2-turn delay, so I had 6 days of warfare left before the PBEM with Rysyonok came to a halt. I tried to pack as much as I could into a semi-believable scenario of a hasty end to the war. And I'm sure readers of Harry Turtledove will note that I shamelessly used elements of the Timeline-191 and Days of Infamy series for inspiration, particularly regarding "Remembrance Day" and the invasion of Oahu.

Sadly, it appears that Rysyonok is not active for now, so this AAR will have to finish. Life happens. Whether he returns or not, I wish him all the best, and thank him for his many years of contributions to the WPO and Matrix community. I can't even begin to tell you how much I learned both playing against such a skilled, experienced player and reading his insightful postings in other threads. I'd also like to thank those who took the time to read this AAR, and sent kind comments. I don't play too many games, but those I do get into I tend to stick to for awhile, and I've only owned WPO for a little over a year now. So I'm not quite ready to move on yet, even though I realize its a 6-year old game. Since I've started my own business late last year my availability has fluctuated, too. So for now I'm back to plugging along against the computer again, hard as that may be after playing against Rysanok. For the first time, I'm playing Japanese, and really enjoying it. Perhaps down the road I'll get into another AAR again - WPO is a great game, and I don't think too many games were ever made featuring WWI-style warfare in a WW2 battle zone. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention Aces8, the late great modder and ship artist Hellfirejet and his nephew Kirk23, and others who made this a lively message board in the past couple years.

If you've read this far, again, thank you! And if you share my views about WPO, give a shout-out in the forums every now and then. Let Matrix and the rest of the community know this game still has a pulse!

One more thanks from a silent 'player' -- I wish I had more time to dig into this game, but I don't. I very much appreciated your AAR, and echo your praises and thank yous to all who have brought so much to this game.

Good luck with your business endeavor. Only advice I have is to keep this game (and any games) off the work machine(s). If possible, keep that game PC as far away from work as you can -- you need to focus on work at work, and when you are off, you do not need any *&^%$ reminders of work - just have fun with the AI.
