After playing the game some, noticed a difference in the effectiveness of mortar barrages compared to the past releases (TLD and WaR).

First noticed on one of the Heath maps, went back and did a test battle at Arnhem Bridge. Allies def/germ attacking. Called in a mortar barrage, it was killing guys in the prone position 13-18 meters away from where the mortar was landing (see pic).

In looking at the data from WaR /TLD, and LSA, maybe Im looking at something wrong, though it appears that the kill rating for the mortar barrages has gone from a value of 8 to 15 for close/pb/med etc. I am assuming there was a reason for this change, though they seem a little too effective now with the apparent increased rating combined with the lowered protection values for the various terrain.

i will admit they are pretty amazing. i lost basically my british para whole force in a forest on one map because of a mortar barrage. was my fault for bunching up of course, but i wasnt THAT bunched.

Air burst mortar rounds would kill prone soldiers...by this time in the war they were using them.

I have read about the US first using a proximity fuse against german ground targets during the 1944 Ardenne Offensive/Battle of the Bulge, I believe this was for larger caliber field artillery. Though, I have not read any accounts of proximity fuses being used for artillery against ground targets prior to this point in the war.

I agree, proximity fuses were first used by US forces in the Bulge. I also don't think they were being used by mortars, but I admit I know little about British ammunition.

IIRC Germans were using them in Hurtgenwald '44
