It is a refreshing change from all the WW2 games.I think it is a more interesting time period.More economics and diplomacy than military.Im thinking it might be on Gamergate summer sale when strategy week comes up.

 Agree. Victoria 1 was too hardcore. But this keeps calling me. .. I know I'm going to hate it. I know Civ 5 is going to suck months of time out of the universe very soon. I know I already have rise of flight; iron cross to consider.

I'm geting tired of paying twice for Paradox titles; it's like paying the developer to beta-test their games.

However, I will admit the video intro for Victoria (I) was one of the best videos for a computer game I've seen in a long time.

Played the demo....It's a lot easier on the brain cells than the 1st one..Its also a lot more fun....But I managed to get the south to secede and start the American Civil War in 1848.. Was pretty interesting. Demo expired with the south controlling 5 "provinces". Of course as a prelude to the war I went through three years of Jacobin rebellions in the north, with the biggest one occurring in NYC(21K troops).I let all the anti-slavery options going and didnt pass any of the historic legislation which prolonged the inevatable....

Played another one and started a war with mexico in 1842. Lost a lot of troops but was getting my 2nd phase troops down into Mexico and Texas when my Allies attacked Mexico from the south(Central American States)One worrisome thing is Mexico has a boatload of troops and they arent that bad.Or maybe my Yankees are just plain horrible..

All pretty plausible scenarios..Nothing like MHII where Mexico declare war on SIam and such things.

This does look like a 1st day purchase.Cant say the same for any other Paradox title that I have ever seen. But it seems amazon is the only NA distributor and they are getting it the 22nd and not the 13th like the rest of humanity.Not doing the DL thing....

Got a similiar feeling and I'm disapointed.

The predecessor took me two days before I understood how pop's, fabrics, production lines, trade goods, etc. are associated and affect the outcome. Here everything works from the get go - no special setup needed. Of course, one can adjust budget sliders and turn off trade AI, but it's not required. You can as well lean back and simply let the game run. There are tons of population statistics - to watch - as it's not possible to directly affect pop's. Vicky 2 seems to be more about macro-management than micro-management by design.

Allowedly, I skiped tutorials, just played through a few months, and there is still plenty of stuff to discover. But at first glance my impression is akin to James (out of eight) rants: too much automation, too less required player interaction. Actually it feels more like Europa Universalis than Victoria and the music simply doesn't fit to this era.

This is no final verdict though and I will look at other people's opinions after release.

Alright, played until 1839 now (3 years) and my first impression confirmed. All I got to do was adjusting tax sliders, setting national focus and research, and clicking events now and then. Aside of this the game ran on his own.

Maybe the US are not a lucky choice for such a demo, as one can't build fabrics due to laissez faire and that cuts player interaction even more. But whatever, I'm bored already. HoI 3, despite all it's flaws, demanded more thinking and micro-management for the first 3 years.

Thats the thing I liked about it though.....Less automatation.....feels more like you are running an actual country than doing everything yourself. At least the AI seems to be a bit more intelligent than many.....

I'm liking this one. Never played the original because of the micromanagement.

The micromanagement of Vicky I is a "love it or hate it" thing.
The people who loved it don't like the automation of Vicky II.
Those who hated it thinks Vicky II's automation is a gift from god.
People who never played Vicky will probably love the automation.
Personally, I find it more realistic as (democratic) governments are there to influence behaviour of the population instead of dictating everything.

Well, the lipstick thingy can said of many games and sequels, and at one point the patch is a new game, and I think most people are OK paying for it. Of course there are many games that, IMHO, exploit this and effectively charge for (sometimes mega, but still) patches, but there are also many examples of where it is reasonable. I guess we all have to make up our own minds of what we are willing to pay for..... Personally I love the Football Manager series, but I am not willing to buy the same (more or less "patched") game every year, so I end up buying last years version, but every second year or, at a huge discount :-)

Those that feel this way about Vicky I versus Vicky II can probably wait a year, and get their piglet for almost nothing. Others have the option to get it now and pay more I guess...

Without going into the discussion about who's who on the forum, it seems as if PI has developed a beast of a game engine. The so called "complaint thread" (and not all posters in that thread seems to agree on anything!) talks about "unhistorical" and other strange behaviors. Also that it's too easy to "win" (whatever that means in these kind of games!) etc.

Now, keep in mind, I'm a HOI player and not a EU or Vicky player, but still..... To me it feels like PI got lost after HOI I and II. The engine is way to flexible and has so many moddable parameters it seems almost impossible to create grand scenarios which does not seem to deviate in very, very unhistorical ways. Now, I'm a friend of games that allow the player, aka me, to influence the game in a way that create a new, alternate history, specially with this type of epic, grand scale games, but when the whole engine/scenario design is so unpredictable, it feels like the possibilities in the software has taken over from the player and history is shaped by the randomness in the parameters rather than by the actions of the player.

This type of game would probably be better in a CIV-setting with random maps, as there is no need for historic settings in that context with the exception of technology and research, and I assume Vicky is as good as HOI in that respect.

My 2 cents. PI should maybe benefit from creating more historic games like the previous versions of HOI and maybe Vicky, and possibly develop a "random map/nations" game based on their current philosophy.

I played around with the demo a bit last night, and it looks like an interesting game. Something new for me, so I'm going to buy it and give it a try.

I noticed that the sliders no longer lock when you double click them. That's a shame.

There also is no option for game difficulty. Here is the Paradox thread addressing this issue:

Right clicking and double clicking does not affect them like in other Paradox titles.
