Seydelitz and offenceman welcome to post for a day or 2 untill we close this thread and talk tactics and ideas.

"Rather good Gin and tonic wouldn't you say Honey?" , this rather obscure quote was from General Melchett to Lieutenant Honey, his long suffering aide de camp. Closely followed by "Whats that bang?" as japanese bombs rained down near Raffles hotel in singapore.

This was to be the start of Britains nightmare sceanrio, a major second front on the other side of the globe. She had been embroiled in a war with Germany for almost 2 and 1/2 years and had reassigned the best personel and equipment from the far east to North africa and back home in blighty. Sadly this was why Brigadier Melchett, a WW1 veteran was left in command of commonwealth forces in the far east.

Melchetts background was much the same as most high ranking officers in the British armed forces. Educated at Harrow and Cambridge he was cleared of gross incompetance after WW1 when his entire regiment was almost wiped out in 1917. One of the few survivors testifying at his court marshall , Captain Blackadder, stated that General Melchett had " the brains of a retarded gibbon coupled with the imagnation of a blind ostritch". fortunately for (then) General Melchett the only other testimony was from a private Baldrick whose nonsense has since been struck from the records and considered an extremely unreliable witness.

Even thought he was cleared of all charges, Melchett's reputation had been tarnished and in the inter war years he had been pensioned out to the more obsure postings available within the empire. Considered even more hidebound than the original commander of far east forces General Percival he was never envisaged to be the actual commander of far east forces. The unfortunate accident that ended Percivals life and blocked the officers latrines for several weeks resulted in Melchett being the hightest ranking officer in singapore when the war started.

We will be hearing more from the Genreral and Honey later on in this account.

Righty-ho , Back to the game. I am proud to be the parter of LoBaron in this, out first, grand campaingn. We had originally planned to fight each other but when contacted by Offenceman for a team game we couldn't refuse. To both our dismay and delight his partner is the esteemed Seydelitz. anyone who has read his AAR's here will know he is a very formidable opponent and Offenceman is no lightweight either. So here we plunge into the deep end as the allies.

So how did the war in the east actually start ? many scholars have cited Japans agression in a suprise attack on Pearl Harbour as the end result of an oil embargo by the USA in 1941. Here-in we have the truth of the matter, set in a chronlogical order we can see the agressors are rather suprising and could re write the history books for future generations.

Commander Mondriaan of the Dutch navy and Captain Glass of the US Navy share the dubious honours of firing the first shots of WW2 in the pacific.

The massacre at Tawi Tawi has been cited by the japanese high command as the main reason its training fleet near Pearl harbour decided to seek revenge when news broke of the trigger happy Glass ( a rather uninspiring captain who would otherwise never have left a footnote in history). Given the rushed nature of japans retaliation only Pearl harbours port and naval facilities were attacked on Dec 7th. the airfields were left alone.

All in all, The USN got off pretty lightly and no airfield attacks means that americans search capacity is much better than expected. Battleship row is a burning mess and Pearls repair facilities will be busy for quite some time.

Time moves on :- DEc 9th and 10th

Melchett " Gad Honey the slant eyed nips have invaded malaysia !, get the men roused and start digging trenches!", "Yes sir " replied Honey, We have had a report from the naval attache of our boys giving the enemy near Hong Kong" . Melchett studies the map for 10 minutes and finally finds the place. " We have a navy there ? , Its in the wrong place bring it all back to singapore we cannot let this fortress be besieged by the japs , it would be a humiliation !" , " why did that old bugger Percival have to fall into the latrine , it's all hid fault we don't have enough of anything" " Pass me more Gin !".

The americans report heavy air losses over the Philipines. But otherwise its much as expected , Khota baru fell to the japanese at dawn on the 10th. this will prove a real thorn in the side to the commonwealth. Malaysia will not fall!

Thanks for the heads up aztez.

As the title suggests I will chime in here from time to time. Rob will be responsible for the main part though, I will reduce my comments to post on rare
occasions when I score a victory, whilst vehemently downplaying the impact of any horrible defeat on the mighty US fleet.

So in case you want a truthful asessment of the overall strategic situation, please contact Capt. Blackadder, except, naturally, if you think you can see
through my artificial propaganda FOW you can also divert random questions in my direction.

For example if you read lines like:

"based on believable naval intelligence reports that, in order to cut off Manila from from the southern DEI, the IJN would send an invasion
fleet into the remote area of Tawi Tawi, Asiatic Fleet Command dispatched a TF centered around CL Marblehead on an intercept course
and dutifully destroyed the enemy fleet in a brilliant demonstration of both, interpretation of enemy intentions as well as exceptional execution
of the defensive plan..."

Should be translated into:

"On running away to a random meeting point, coincidently Tawi Tawi because of lack of other ideas, a USN CL TF stumbled over an IJN invasion force at Tawi Tawi
and completely wiped out the attackers while both fleet commanders still tried to get rid of their surprized expression..."

I am awaiting any suggestions to keep up the propaganda machine after the USN has been destroyed, renaming British and Australian major warships to
corresponding US types is already in the works should the neccessity occur.

LoBaron,

Cmdr US Pac forces, representative of the NZ pacifist comittee and leader of the SU eastern area command. Scizophrenic so to say...

Thanks aztez!

Rob said I could add a comment to this AAR.

It is an honor to be part of this game and even early I can see it will be a challenge filled with things that are out of the ordinary. Its too bad, I can't follow both sides of this one because it is going to be fun.

Thanks to Rob, LoBaron, and Seydlitz for taking interest in my idea.

Even though I knew that's probably what happened, it did not cushion the blow any. :( It wasn't even going to Tawi Tawi. grrr

Ok, that is my last post and look at this AAR.

I would like to commend the American commander of submarines. Very good early positioning. You got off lots of shots at tankers, freighters, and even a couple of cruisers.

The Captain of the Tanker Goyo Maru would like to let you know that he will be sending you the repair bill for all the dents you put in the side of his ship. It was amazing to watch the American submarine hit the ship 5 times with torps that failed to detonate.

Good luck guys. I may post a bit morebut after the 14th I am out of this thread.

offenseman, seydlitz, thank you for making that game happen. We chose some serious opposition, better, the serious opposition chose us.
Anyway, good hunting guys, this will be fun.

Yes, very strange, seydlitz. I wonder if there is something wrong with our bloody torps tonight...

Wow - great start, guys!

Remind me never to make drunken bets with you two.

After playing AE for a good bit now, I see it as an incredible stroke of luck that they bypassed airfield attacks on PH. That saves you 3 or 4 dozen front line search planes plus scores of other aircraft. What a windfall for you.

Do you think they'll hit PH a second day?

Witpqs - It now upto dec 12th and no further attacks on PH, it is strange but really cut back on japanese losses too. personally i think its an odd choice for japan, but as allies i am not about to complain about it .

Jcar-thank you , sadly 11th and 12th wasnt a good day to be an american merchant sailor.

To our esteemed opponents - 14th seem like a good cut off date, no doubt we will continue to chat over e-mails and ofc if either of you decide on an AAR then we will not peek either.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 11/12, 41

Sorry no pics , I will incorporate more as i get a free photo shoppy thing sorted out.

Well these 2 days saw a lot of american escapees from Manilla bump into some very well positioned japanese surface combat forces. Overall about 10 AKl's and AK's of various flavours died today. one group that was escorted by the brave DD Pope fought off a japanese raiding CL group and withdrew with very minor damage.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Taytay at 74,80, Range 8,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
CL Kashii
CL Isuzu
TB Kari

Allied Ships
DD Pope
PG Isabel
AV Langley, Shell hits 1
AVD Childs
xAP President Madison
xAP Rochambeau
xAP Neptuna

British motor boats from hong kong tried a mid ocoen intercept of a japanese convoy previously spotted by the raiding DD's yesterday. It was utterly one sided and the commander retired afer losing 2 HDML's. Lesson learnt , these are NOT PT boats and even at night can't do much to even unescorted merchants.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Hong Kong at 78,63, Range 7,000 Yards

Japanese Ships

xAKL Hokuhi Maru
xAK Somedono Maru
xAKL Sunten Maru
xAKL Junpo Maru

Allied Ships
MTB 7
MTB 8
MTB 9
MTB 10
MTB 11
MTB 12
MTB 26
MTB 27

As seydlitz stated the american subs had a field day launching thier dud torps , but even so some did contact and maybe 2 AK's and a tanker are damaged/sunk as a result. Not to be outdone by the yankees, the dutch sub SSKXII sank 2 merchants near Thailand.

Submarine attack near Kompong Trach at 54,69

Japanese Ships
xAK Johore Maru, Torpedo hits 4, heavy fires, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS KXII

In the air over the PI japanese bombers continue to harass the locals and target the runways at Manilla. LoBaron had differant ideas and hit Camh ran bays port with the B17's doing some good damage.

Morning Air attack on Cam Ranh Bay , at 64,72

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 10 NM, estimated altitude 6,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 2 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-27b Nate x 2

Allied aircraft
B-17D Fortress x 10

No Japanese losses

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
xAK Iwaki Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire
PB Hakka Maru, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage
AO Notoro, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Japanese ground losses:
9 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

the american naval massacre continued over the pacific where KB launched at the CA Minneapolis and 5 DMS from one hex away ! that was unlucky on the american part but we now know where KB is as a 'bonus'.

Morning Air attack on TF, near Jarvis Island at 163,141

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid spotted at 19 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 27
B5N2 Kate x 45
D3A1 Val x 23

Allied aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
D3A1 Val: 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses

Allied Ships
CA Indianapolis, Bomb hits 1, and is sunk
DMS Long sunk later
DMS Hopkins, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage sunk
DMS Elliot, Bomb hits 3, heavy fires, heavy damage sunk
DMS Southard, Bomb hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage sunk
DMS Dorsey sunk later

Thats enough detail for today although there were some new tactics on the part of japan, night bombing over malaysia , mainly george town hit slightly but not much else happening apart from keeping general melchett awake most of the night. given his usually grumpy disposition i can't say i am suprised not to hear from Lt. Honey today.

Overall the japanese advance appears to be driving like a dagger towards timor/australia with scant regard for north borneo. this is a suprise and we will try and counter with what we have but frankly there ain't much in the DEI to do anything with.

Here is the overall map, japan is really going for south DEI, suprisingly Manado in north celebes is hodling out. 2 japanese attcks have been repulsed so far, just wish i had some transport a/c to help it out.

You can look those ships you slaughtered at Tawi Tawi up in a Japanese start and see what was on them, but at least a Nav Gd, maybe a base force too went up in smoke.

That hurts Japan more than those ships, which are replaceable; you never have enough LCUs, and losing 1 or 2 completely like that isn't good.

Well, if luck is on our side, us LYBs as we are called in another popular AAR should be pulling another minor trick next turn.

Watch and see where the midget subs turn up.....

Lenny, if you hadn't noticed, we are using time travel to change history. We went back and sunk the Indianapolis so that she will not be around to carry the atomic bombs that would have been dropped on Japan. In doing this, we have saved the populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I am certain that Mike (Offenseman) and I will be starting up an AAR on our side.

We are having an issue: When the game started "allow replacements" was set to "on".

This turns out to be able to be a major show stopper and we might have to restart.

Is there any known option to reset this value to "off" during a PBEM?
Any help would be really appreciated.

I don't beleive you can change this in a PBEM.  Sorry.  You could do a house rule to pull them off board....

Thanks PaxMondo. It seems you are right.
Taking this into account we decided to restart the game as replacement allowed is gamebreaking with 2 day turns.

Thats bad news for the Allies because obviousely the Japanese peobably won´t make the mistake of not attacking
the AF at PH and also wont run into my cruisers and Rob´s DDs that easily.
But, well, this gonna be a long war, I bet we will have more than one opportunity to provide swimming lessons to IJN troops...

This goes into history as "The Border Clash that nearly developed into WWII" I guess.

FYI , we are doing a re-start and I'll most likely start a new AAR properly this time with a list of our limited house rules. and sadly i suspect PH sirfields won't be left alone this time. although given LoBarons very effective use of the manilla subs , the IJN might decide that they are more of a target.

time will tell and hopefully we'll be up and runng by the weekend.

thanks to all who posted here and we look forward to seeing you in the new thread.

I think he won´t. Rob uses that avatar to distract opponents on a regular basis (I know what I am talking about), so this
is a secret weapon you will most probably only get a full broadside from if you play against him.
