Thank god they never do that on merchant ships....

Well - passengers on Hurtigruten ships who cross the Arctic Circle for the first time get a cup of Water on the Rocks down the back of their necks in a ceremony that is probably participation optional.

The equator christening ceremony used to be a tradition at least on German merchant ships. Except on cruise ships, it probably is by now another victim of globalization.

We were about 200 miles from the equator but the "Old Man" was concerned about having so many females on-board so we never crossed........

Pretty much the story of me not getting it also. We were in Trinidad for a port call around 1990 and that was the closest we ever made it to the line. Always thought that we got robbed on that trip.

I figured Don's ship was the USS Constitution

What's wrong with that? Mine was!

Bah! Your next ship will be your first.

My Shellback certificate is from 1968, or maybe 67. Relatively sure it wasn't 1969.

Mine is from 1989.

I don't have one . WE got within 6 miles then turned back when the nav computer, RADAR, Radios and NAVIGATOR all failed (long story)..

But I have several dozen "bluenoses!". (no not brown noses, blue nose!).

Got my blue nose in 1990.

Nope! Still got a copy of my orders. I was TAD to her for exactly one weekend to facilitate a number of retirement ceremonies. And if you get "technical" and say TAD doesn't count, then you'd also be saying that if your'e part of a deployed airgroup, then you don't actually serve on a carrier! There! Gotcha in advance!

Nah, I just am curious if they ever cast off the mooring lines while you were aboard.
